"The backrooms" type games are inspired by kids who used to be taken to work with their parents and then left to wander around the backrooms of the work areas alone.
I can actually confirm that. My dad worked in an office built in the 70's that looked _exactly_ like it was from the Stanley Parable. Being a little kid in those places really makes them feel endlessly huge. I mean, have you ever been in an old office building after everyone's left? And just gone up floor after floor? It's so intoxicatingly unnatural.
It should also avoid most "lore" and stuff since too many backrooms stuff just removes the mystery and adds it's own story and random peoples ideas from thr internet.
I guess the problem is is that you can only build tension for so long before it loses its luster You got to have some kinda payoff at some point, a slow burn horror with backroom themes would be pretty cool though The difficult part is how to establish a good payoff to the tension, so one can build up tension again But you definitely can use less in your face methods of establishing a monster, or an eventual scare Could be a monster that very rarely shows up, but when introduced has a certain sound warning their presence, and after a few encounters to establish that sound status quo.. You play that sound que without the monster spawning to build up paranoia, could even have it be random with after the establishing counter they only rarely spawn with the sound.. so if they figure out that the sound means nothing now, they can get smacked with a new surprise. You could also perhaps have some groans and creaks of some of the floors. Let the player thing it is part of the ambience until one time the creaks leads to the floor giving in, and having them fall to a new level of the backrooms. (As in literal level, one 'story' down. It could remain the same theme, or use it as a nifty transition to another backrooms theme like the pool tile areas and etc.) Make the player dread when they step on an area that causes a creak, not knowing if it might suddenly collapse.
@@bubbadoo10 One of the ideas I came up with was the environment itself being an enemy, like some 4D being is playing mind games with the player. There'd be moments where hallways get tighter or loop on themselves, like the area you're in is trying to *digest* you or something as you look for a way to escape/noclip out. Distant blurry figures, subtly changing rooms, sudden light loss, sound design.. stuff to trip people up until they figure out what means what. I kinda like the player having a map w/ limited phone battery, putting a timer on the ability to know where you are in a place that feeds off your fear. I guess there needs to be an objective... Idk, I love these ideas but it's too ambitious and just not as straightforward and clear as most horror games I've seen. It's not like jumpscare horror ISN'T scary (even Resident Evil uses js), it's just usually done cheap and I just want to better integrate the original Backrooms ideas into the horror.
@@huntermorgan6177 Oh yeah absolutely insanely ambitious ideas, but it's fun to express them none-the-less. Who knows, maybe someone with game dev experience sees this stuff and gets inspired, yennow?
Don't think I'll ever get tired of watching Vinny exploring random Half Life 1 maps and mods, i always love seeing a new vod of HL1 stuff pop up in my box
1:02:26 I think the guy working there might have thought Vinny was in a gay relationship, and refer to his partner as Dad/Daddy. If that was the case, oh boy that must been the worst misunderstanding EVER.
I don't usually manage to catch Vinny's streams live but I saw a bit of this one when it was live and that Jerma raid was insane. Viewer count went from like 6k to over 22k in just a few minutes!
15:04 they turn every shitty horror trend into a game vin, I pointed this out last time Joel was playing backrooms games. It's just what they do. They did it to SCPs, they did it to Slenderman, they did it for Mandela Catalogue, the creator of Gemini Home Entertainment did it himself. It's only logical that everyone else is gonna want to cash in one someone else's ideas.
Half-Life uses precalculated ray-traced lighting that is then converted into a lightmap to be applied to the geometry in real-time. The lighting itself is very realistic, which becomes more apparent when textures are disabled via cheats.
@@alfiehicks1 i know! but usually the lightmap scale is so high that the lighting is very low-res. i work with source often and experiment a lot with how it bakes its lighting!
This is the second time I've seen Vinny come across an Ashens reference in a Half-Life map. What did Ashens do to get so far stuck in the HL mapping community? Also does Vinny know about Pop Station Watch, with as much Plug-and-Plague he's done?
I find it fascinating how both Vinny and Joel have commented on the bland nature of backrooms games. It's almost as if it's an incredibly boring, dull, and entirely uninteresting concept with even less effort put into it than "tall skinny man".
Big Goldsource fan, chat. Played it for hours back in the day. Even made some levels. How do you do cheats again? Did I go left or right down this ladder again? Is it F5 or F6 to quicksave again? Why isn't this a meme yet? XD
Next time Vinny buys Beef Jerky for his dad (Or if anyone reading this buys beef jerky for their dads) they should try Biltong. It's a south african spiced dried meat and it's delicious.
I had a similar experience that Vin had at Spencer's myself. I always remembered it as the novelty, media shop. But no, it isn't anymore. Its lewd and just full of garbage. I'm with Vinny, I'll never go back to one.

I love the fact that quite a few people in this comment section clicked because of that CRX, I fucking love my CRX, which is a '91 EE8, though
1:12:31 i know its just an LSD Dream Emulator recreation map, and there is literally nothing to do, but to see Vinny play something i made is unreal.

It’s always such a treat to see Vinny play anything half life related. Maximum comfy every time.
That’s how I felt with the liminal space stuff he did. Just nap material.
14:50 IMO the only true Backrooms game would use procedural generation + a focus on atmosphere/tension rather than in-your-face scares and monsters.
Finally, somebody gets it.

How the hell did Vinny miss that picture of Jerma?

The 1985 Honda CRX is the sort of content Grey Leno can really get behind the wheel of.

Look in your sound settings for volume equalization. In some cases it turns itself off on reboot, but it should fix your volume problems
