Jake Smith Dude, it's come down to "Yogi Bear did 9/11" in some circles. Sad thing is he actually typed "Yogi Bera" (like Yogi Berra, the baseball player) so that shows the average level of intellect of these kinds of people.
Avery Carter So the joke is "Some people overreacted so let's overreact so much more that we become the very people we're taking the piss out of"? That's a very internet thing to do, cure cancer by becoming worse cancer.
+HIGHSCORE AAA That's actually what you'd call the "cover". What it is really about is people on the internet being as spiteful and nasty as possible under the guise of an excuse they can use to do so. Hence why you have a child being dragged around by the gorilla in the trailer. It's meant to be edgy, and the idea that people would be upset is the goal.
***** It's a cover. Yes people found the overreaction something they could look down upon, but that's not enough. It was the fact that something was serious and upsetting, and yet needed to mocked. That's how the internet works.
Oh, God, please. I'm just hoping that we're not the only ones sick of these fucking things. This alleged "game" is pretty much the last straw for me. I'm neutral to the meme, but...admittedly, this thing goes too far. At least we can take solace in its removal from GL. Sorry for lashing out a bit, but--yeah. Simulators are recipes for failure nowadays.
I'm begging to hate meme culture. Its just a bunch of edgy kids calling everything cancer and stealing other peoples pictures and throwing them on their meme pages. Literally saw one the other day with someone elses watermark overlaying the whole picture with the caption 'sorry for the watermark.' Its like they didn't know the water mark was there to stop them from stealing other peoples shit.
God damn it. Why was this ever a meme? Harambe was killed tragically due to a irresponsible kid and everyone decides to make a joke out of it? Worse meme ever.
"I don't know when the meme became funny." Simple, Jim, that's because it never was. Memes in general are like a stand up comedian trying to repeat one joke to fill up an entire 10 minute slot for a stand up routine; the repetition kills it faster than you can say "Stop." But people won't stop. They see people doing it so they jump on the bandwagon to be relevant and popular and it's honestly just sad. You may argue that this doesn't apply to all memes, but what makes a meme a meme? Is it a meme if it's only done once? Only twice? No. What makes a meme a meme is the repetition. And it's the repetition that kills it, which means that memes, by their very nature, ceased to be funny by the time they became a meme.
"That item does not exist. It may have been removed by the author." Well done Jim. My faith in humanity is restored. At least until Steam Memelight strikes again.
I mean, to be fair...The amount of time it would take to make a good game involving this would take years and by then the meme would be completely forgotten.
Jesus, I'm not sure what's worse in these comments: the meme brigade or the moral outrage league. A gorilla getting shot is neither particularly funny nor tragic; it's nothing much of anything. Congratulations on all being exceedingly tedious human beings, clinging to headlines in a desperate grab for relevance.
I dunno...blathering on about how above it all you are is WAY more annoying than either camp. Don't sniff your own farts too much dude, eventually you'll choke.
Paul Dennett It's not exactly difficult to be 'above it all' when referring to a youtube circlejerk. It's pretty much a given for... you know, *adults.* It's a bit difficult to sniff your own farts when knee-deep in others' excrement. planescaped The 'meme' is just the usual band of Internet idiots trying to convince each other that they're cool and part of Club Internet with this week's code word. You're deranged if you think these 'lel' comments are some incisive fucking social commentary.
Reading these comments, I understand how people think this is a dumb game or tired subject, but I didn't expect people to be sensitive to the fact Harambe was made into a meme. Like, you're going to say it's disrespectful and tragic when 9/11 is still a meme? Why aren't you desensitized to the fact memes know no bounds? Respect be damned, memes just exist, they're kind of dumb but they ultimately harm no one.
This is the same country who glorifies homicide by having anniversary specials of murder cases. Nothing surprises me anymore and I don't have an ounce of respect for most people.
When he said it it was kind of funny, because it was on the spot, unexpected and new...Then children everywhere started doing what children do, endlessly regurgitating something they heard that made people laugh hoping that every time they spew it out they'll get the same response and people may accidentally mistake them for being funny.
People quoting memes are the nerds in the 1980s running around shouting Monty Python quotes out of context thinking it makes them the funniest guy on the block when in reality it exposes them as the pathetic dorks they really are. Not saying that memes (or Monty Python quotes) doesn't have their place, but they should be used like inside jokes. For me, shouting "Heidenreich!" will make my friends cry hysterics while any other person would look at me weird for shouting a random German-sounding name (though some wrestling fans would also get a giggle). So be cool, don't be lame, don't go spouting memes outside of your 4chans and your 9gags and your Reddits and don't go quoting Monty Python outside of your D&D circle. ... Nii!
It has a good shot of making it through Greenlight and perhaps making an easy profit. I don't expect it to do particularly well though. Steam is a platform where games are judged harshly if they don't run well and makes it easy to refund in 2 hours if the game ends up stale. I'd say that the Shots out for Kickstarter is the lucky one. Kickstarter doesn't have a great record of refunds or chasing back bad projects.
***** There are plenty of games which got attention from PewDiePie and the like which didn't sell that well. I am Bread is one example. Meme games need to have more merit than being fun to watch if they want to sell. Dead Space 3 had videos from Game Grumps and many others which preceded the game's release and read out bullet points. It didn't save their sales.
thelastgogeta "didn't sell that well" they bump sales and that is not acceptable for this shit, an extra $20 in their pockets is not something to be happy about.
I'm so sick of the Harambe memes. I live in Cincinnati and our zoo is awesome but all these memes make it look like crap. I've been to that enclosure many times and seen Harambe in the flesh. It would have been really difficult to get through that fence which is why nothing happened for the 30 years it's been there. The zoo isn't to blame, the kid is.
Okay, I just don't get this meme and why it's funny, and not because I think it's offensive or anything like that. I personally believe anything can be made funny by a smart enough comedian, but I have yet to see any iteration of this meme give me so much as a chuckle. Am I missing something, here?
I believe it has to do with the "Dicks out for Harambe" 1: Dicks are naturally funny 2: Exposing yourself is quite a lark 3: Harambe is funny sounding You put all that together and 12 year olds will screech it in glee.
Howell mailed it. Most people are shallow, childlike and shameless about both so they laugh at whatever engages their intellect the least. Then they get defensive because deep down they know enjoying stupid entertainment makes them actually stupid, so they bitch about "haters" and "judgement."
While they nailed it in earlier replies, I have seen some rather amusing puns spun around the name. Because "Harambe" is a pretty fun word to say. But when you look at the context and are an animal lover, all these wannabe comedies become asshole children (I don't care how old they actually are, they're children).
I was also thinking about the gap between Harambe's death and the start of the meme. I think it might be related to Overwatch. They both occurred at roughly the same time but I think it took someone a while to get the whole Winston Harambe thing and put that together. I think that was one of the first "dank memes" that I saw on the subject and it was shared around quite a lot. In conclusion, I believe that Overwatch caused this mess.
I think the way to fix steam greenlight is to only let people vote once a day, this should hopefully force people to think about what they're actually voting for
Ho boy, Steam greenlight never cease to amaze me... Or is it despair ? Hmmmmm... *mimics profile's perplexed posing* Love your videos though... That's for sure.

Zoos play an integral role in a lot of species conservation / preservation, and lots are non-profit organisations, using their money for well-being of their animals, or other animals in the wild. The type of zoos you're thinking of existed in the far in past.

HARAMBE DIDN'T DIE FOR THIS #dicksoutforharambe #clitsoutforharambe
I didn't even knew that it was a meme until someone pointed it out in the comment section of the greenlight page.
The ending makes me hurt laughing. Please Jim, end my suffering
2:20 Thank you, Jim, I was also wondering how the meme got relevant months after the gorilla was killed.
Memelight makes Harambe realize he died in vain
Can't code a gun, make it a laser.
Also enjoyed the numerous t-poses in that vertical slice
I have mixed feelings about it, on one hand all memes are cancer and unfunny but on the other it's annoying a lot of the "holier than thou" people.

Tragedy + Time = Comedy, and apparently Harambe didn't need a whole lot of time to become comedy.
In an previous video by Jim (I think it was titled "The Housewife"), I saw some interesting comments discussing a problem/question that this game reminded me of (Re: "What if you want to make a game about a sensitive issue without offending the majority of players, and without making it exploitive?"). With The Housewife, it was the theme of domestic violence. In this game, it was animal abuse.
I think both games may have benefited from taking a page from Aesop and Orwell and used _metaphors_ to tell the same theme, as doing that would distance the players from such sensitive subjects (an example of this would be replacing the gorilla with a mythical animal, etc).
But then again, Jim may be right in thinking that the developers wanted to portray their game's themes blatantly for attention and shock value.
It probably only took that long to go up because everyone was sure that everybody else was already doing it.
Oh a simulator game we didnt have those in a while, and a meme game, best of both worlds
It's funny how fast people went from outraged about Harambe, to Lol Dank Memes.
You know a memes dead when someone starts making a game about it
In my day, internet memes were about poorly translated video game openings and Mr. T throwing people. Now we have this shit.

It started when Danny Trejo randomly said "Dicks out for Harambe." Still waiting for it to die out myself.
We need to take a second and think about Harambe.
Just pounding it.
Pounding it.
Pounding. It.

Im not gonna lie i couldn't help but laugh at how crude and blunt this was.
BUT: Postal-esque game set in zoo, where you play as a gorrilla with a shotgun... now that's a thing I'd play
Overwatch is the actual Harambe simulator
I hate the people that do these things.

is there an official name for this genre of comedy?
I haven't been able to quite get my finger on the name...
Someone is kickstarting Harambe shot glasses. WTF? Whats next... Harambe onesie? Harambe flavoured yogurt? Harambe skin mod for Fallout 4?

Hurry for harambe!
What is dank may never meme!
to be fair harambe did die, so you couldnt exactly joke about it the day after. thats why it took a while to get picked up.
I said yes to this on greenlight.
My heart weeps for Steam. Drowning in a sea of stupidity.

Harambe memes will make you money
"You needed three people" but then zooms in on there being 4 people? :/
...Well, at least it has gameplay. That's better than a lot of 'simulator' games.

It's a very disgusting thing that happened, to something that didn't have a choice in where it was kept, for the profit of people looking at it.
