I enjoy your videos. In my shop we took an old bulb socket with an 1157 bulb installed. Use the pigtails from the socket inserted in any airbag circuit. It is about the same resistance. Has worked on every one we've tested to date. Peace.
My first experience with a clock spring was when I was parting out our POS '00 GMC Jimmy. I got a little ham-fisted ripping the steering column apart, and TWAAAANG! Ribbon everywhere. Had no idea what it was until I went on the net, HAHAHA! Good thing it wasn't going back together ... Thank God that vehicle will not haunt another soul again -it's parts are all over the world now. :D
man this is really handy, chrysler's diagnostic flow chart for these codes involves using the factory scan tool plus a special tool that comes in a briefcase with a bunch of different connectors and an airbag simulator thing, this is a real time saver, half of the time you couldn't even find the right connector on the special tool, and it was always was a broken clock spring
Yep 99.99999% clock spring & am amazed at how long they last. I only put in OEM especially when it comes to air bags & components...will not install anything else for the customer's safety. Nice video as usual!
I agree, I push OEM but I have some customers that just won't send the money. The only aftermarket I can get usually are Dorman and they last abut 3-6 months if that long.
Great job as always Eric. You have a awesome little shop and most importantly a wonderful family. I'm enjoying your outdoor channel as well. If I ever venture to that part of our country I will like to visit and support your channel. You offer so much help to us viewers. Sometimes you make it look so easy. Keep up in what makes you Dr. O.
Great vid, Eric. If a person doesn't have a Verus, do you think connecting an LED instead of the resistor would work? I'd imagine that as you spin the wheel, you'd possibly see some changes in brightness. Just a thought.
My experience Squib circuits codes are normally 90 percent of the time The Clock Spring Even though most flow charts say it's the air bag Good Video Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
The term squib is also the name of the igniter for stage fireworks at a rock concert. Sometimes they just refer to the entire device that the pyrotechnics shoot out of as a squib.
Hi Eric Was the resistor you used just from an electronics supplier or is it an actual test item? If just from electronics supplier how did you determin the correct resistance? Thanks.
I'm taking the lessons scannerdanner offers on his premium channel and I'm tracking pretty good. But as a DIY'er I lack on hands practice so videos like yours help me to understand a little better. There is no better teacher than experience!
What do you know about 2007 ford focus airbag lights? I watched one of your videos awhile ago about a whited ford focus that had a problem with it. My ford focus has the light on and i just failed inspection for it:( help me?
Important question: *Why* can’t we hook up an ohm meter to the back of the clock spring and check the air bag resistance? Is this because the meter’s test voltage might trigger the inflator charge? 😬
Nice video, to bad my scannner doesn't support SRS live data. It does give me the B1B02 code with Air bag warning light on. Any tips on how to further diagnosis with out the live data ohms screen?
Good idea, but wasn't Eric checking the circuit with power on? Or did he disconnect before taking the airbag out, then reconnect to test the circuit? Or is it safety third at SMA - LOL!
Pretty nifty trick there! Is that normal for only one part of the clockspring to fail like that? I've been under the impression it was usually an all-in type failure. :]
Replace, they are wound wire bands in an internal sprung unit, as the name implies. The wire can break or partially break at any point in that long roll. No real way to clean or fix them unless it's just a dirty connector.
Emt Scythe I think Eric dissected one last time but I missed that video. If it were anything like the rotating horn button in an early Chevelle then you could clean them up and get them working again.
Yo Eric cool bypass test! So why can't you use an ohmmeter to check the resistance of an airbag circuit? Isn't that what the SRS module is doing anyways to get the scan data values?
It most certainly is but I am victim of listening to old automotive myths like never use an ohm meter on an air bag, never use a test light on a computer, always shut the engine off before changing oil and things like that. It is a classic case of speaking before thinking. Could you imagine what would have happened in the comments if I used an ohm meter to check the bag!?
I learned something new about time constraints working for a few days in NYC...basically if you stretch out a simple 5-minute diag into half an hour of complaining and not getting anywhere, then you are most definitely not on a time constraint (or are clueless) haha
A tip, a 3.3 ohm is a very common value in the electronics world and that would work too. Back when Radio Shack existed, you could pick up a pack there.
Perhaps a dumb question but...if it's a bad clock spring, wouldn't squib 1 AND squib 2 be affected as you turn the wheel? Why is only one circuit impacted?
Hello, I have B1B06 code in my JEEP WK. I change clockspring yesterday for original part from MOPAR. After montage part and switching on the starter, airbag light still shine. I check the codes and i have B1B03. Driver airbag squib 1 have constant resistance 1.5ohm and driver airbag squib 2 have constant resistance 3.1ohm. Squib 1 have too low resistance. Plis help me, what can I do?
Nah, I've got a hole box of them... Bought a cheap Chinese set off eBay just for stuff like this. I must confess I did learn that from Eric as many other things. ;)
My neighbor just had their clockspring go bad on a '09 Jeep Liberty. I own 10 different older model cars. None are Chryslers. Never had a clockspring go bad yet! Chryslers suck.
Can any one help? I have an 03 Dodge Dakota SXT truck and the Air bag light is on. I bought a code reader that reads air bag codes and ABS codes (ABS - SRS) I checked the SRS and got no error codes I checked the truck and no error codes I got " P done" when I cycled the ignition 3 times. I checked the ABS and I got some strange codes. There was no letter before the code just the numbers and letters. the codes I read were and I will enter them as they appear on the scanner -> 0001 DODGE, 0002 DODGE, 0003 DODGE, 0004 DODGE, 0005 DODGE, 0006 DODGE, 0007 DODGE, 0008 DODGE, 0009 DODGE, 000A DODGE, 000B DODGE, 000C DODGE, 000D DODGE, 000E DODGE, AND 000F DODGE.

After replacing the clockspring, I would leave Eric's test resistors permanently installed and not plug the airbag back in. That's how I have my own personal vehicle rigged up, no lie :)
Mine did that last night n about scared me too death! Out of no where. Just left drive up window gas station and boom right in my face. Chrysler 200 LX 2011. Only 115000 miles in it. Hurt so damn bad n I thot my wrist was broken. Hate this pos! I thot I got shot and whole car filled with smoke and I jumped out.

Just an abundance of knowledge. Subscribing to your channel was one of the best youtube decision ive ever made. Thanks Mr. Eric O.

I used this trick just this morning. Thanks Eric.
Pretty dam quick Eric congrats Darren

Eric O has an outdoor channel too? I did not know that.
+Gary's Garage Yes Gary it's new. He has 4 uploads so b far. It's called outdoors with Eric O
Thanks again for another interesting video. I like your Outdoor Channel as well, you are a busy man!
Thanks for showing the process to pinpoint the diagnosis once again!

Another great lesson from the Chrysler guru!
Good quick diagnosis Eric. Good work !
Awesome tip there Eric. Thanks for sharing! :)
That was a great lesson Eric..see you in the repair !
Thank you Eric. It’s really appreciated.
Great video Thanks for sharing. really helped me understand
good one eric, been using this method for some time. love the guys who buy the $400 simulator kit and i use a dollars worth of resistors.
Hi Eric
Was the resistor you used just from an electronics supplier or is it an actual test item?
If just from electronics supplier how did you determin the correct resistance?
Thanks.
Cool diagnostics Eric. 👍👍
Of course I have the maxisys elite and it does NOT show me resistance values for the 2 squibs... lmao. 5000$. Love it. Thanks for the video Eric.
Clock springs can also cause "intermittent" faults! BTDT!
What a crafty idea, swap in a resistor that won't twist in the connector.
Hah! The airbag light is on in my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Gotta go pull some codes and watch these two videos!
Thank you Eric!
you are a good guy. TMJ
cool video, a bad clockspring would not effect both circuits?
They don't share a common connection. The clock spring is basically a ribbon cable, constant flexing over time just breaks the wires.
I'm taking the lessons scannerdanner offers on his premium channel and I'm tracking pretty good. But as a DIY'er I lack on hands practice so videos like yours help me to understand a little better. There is no better teacher than experience!

Is that the autel your using I tried to find the squib test in mine with no luck
brilliant tip, cheers
Good one Eric. Are their any special precautions you take working on air bags so they don't accidentally go off in your face?
Unhook the Negative Battery Term and pull the SRS fuse ( Airbag )
Good idea, but wasn't Eric checking the circuit with power on? Or did he disconnect before taking the airbag out, then reconnect to test the circuit? Or is it safety third at SMA - LOL!
Pretty nifty trick there! Is that normal for only one part of the clockspring to fail like that? I've been under the impression it was usually an all-in type failure. :]
What type of scanner is that to read squib circuit ohms?
I have a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser code reading “Passenger Squib Circuit #1 Open”
No horn and airbag light is on.
hello, what type of scanner are you using? thanks
Real help full thanks
Thanks Eric!! Added you to my Channel Under Dana's Garage
rite on
Theres your problem lady!! Great video Eric.
i know on my voyager there was a recall on clockspring . so common prob on chrysler
Last time it was just some resistance in the air bag connectors. Can you just clean up the clock spring or do you have to replace them?
Replace, they are wound wire bands in an internal sprung unit, as the name implies. The wire can break or partially break at any point in that long roll. No real way to clean or fix them unless it's just a dirty connector.

easy way to tell with Chryslers if Clockspring is bad is now steering wheel controls will work. No cruise, no horn, no radio controls.
amazing how out of round that steering wheel is. huge deflection when turned 360. figures it is an American brand.
Yo Eric cool bypass test! So why can't you use an ohmmeter to check the resistance of an airbag circuit? Isn't that what the SRS module is doing anyways to get the scan data values?

Well you know more controversy = more comments and views. I mean look at our buddy Schrodinger...the recipe for success xD
motoYam82 So your saying I need more time constrains and more bitching about mindless hacks?
I learned something new about time constraints working for a few days in NYC...basically if you stretch out a simple 5-minute diag into half an hour of complaining and not getting anywhere, then you are most definitely not on a time constraint (or are clueless) haha
Just think, way to get a bunch of views is to blow a few airbags with an ohm meter.
how do you short out the system to get the abs codes to show for a 99 ram 1500?
What type of resistor is it, might buy one. Thanks
2 ohm

Perhaps a dumb question but...if it's a bad clock spring, wouldn't squib 1 AND squib 2 be affected as you turn the wheel? Why is only one circuit impacted?
Clock spring has wires for squib 1, squib 2, steering wheel buttons, etc. In this case only the wire for squib 1 got broken.
different circuits in the clock spring.
Only one was bad in this video.
great I have jeep 2000 with the problem
Great video...
great, as always ...
how often do you hear "that should be recall" when customers have to fix there car's?
Thanks!!!
when the clock spring breaks, its time to fix it ;)
LOl! I see what ya did there! ;)
You can't break spring break.
THANK YOU!!!
BIG DODGE will be back for ball joints
Smart guy!

Nah, I've got a hole box of them... Bought a cheap Chinese set off eBay just for stuff like this. I must confess I did learn that from Eric as many other things. ;)
Chryslers and their airbags...geez. Just replaced a clock spring yesterday on a Ram 1500 for the 2nd time in a year and a half, yep a Dorman.
You got a year and a half... I got just out of the driveway! Dorman... you get what you pay for.
+Alan Maier year and a half out of 2. But I'm having to wait for payment from later claims so ya know...
*Squib=slang for explosive*

im watching this while i shit. to get the full effect from the stink and mashy feel of what must be like to be a Chrysler product.
That was too funny
HAhaha yeah that pretty much puts it into perspective haha
my god these vehicles probably still smell new and things are breaking ,
Why not bi-directionally activate the airbags? LOL, obviously I am joking....
