Awesome. With the right knowledge, it is amazing how much can be accomplished with simple tools.
I do the same thing. I made a 2.2 & a 3.3 ohm resistor for testing airbag systems out of a piece of hookup wire, a resistor, 2 floral pins & heatshrink. Solder it all up, done. All up cost nearly nothing. The sharp pins make back probing easy & the flexibility of the hookup wire means the tool will last forever
You’re a good instructor!👏
Very valuable test. I'm glad you showed the stabliant 22 also. The most powerful diagnostic tests are when you can substitute a known value. Bypass testing is the greatest. Super effective and straightforward. The first time i ever used this test was a honda prelude. It came with a shorting bar dummy plug. It was attached to the air bag next to the connector. This is preobd, but they wanted you to short the connection and check for the code to change to shorted ckt.
Great video, also the shorting bar can be used to validate that you have high resistance in the circuit.
greetings from south africa i love how you explain straight to the point thank you for sharing your know how i have been in the automotive industry for over 50 years and still love learning we use the same resister for other sensor simulation keep up the great work regards
thank you Sherwood
Circuit integrity testing. Love it.
Thanks for posting
What a great video. Did this before with vw crafter. Was plug on module. Very rarely do airbags fail. Great informative video that I've learned from . I will be sure to do this. Guys like you is how I've learned and be where I am today so thanks again 👍
Love it.its fun to just bypass multiple steps and get to the facts so fast. Simple. I use a logic probe to inject signals and resistance
Thanks for this video, I'm in the middle of air bag problems in my car..keep up the good work..
Great video. The professor has a gift when it comes to teaching. These videos are incredible. 👍👍👍
Indeed ! Good point - gotta let him know… you are right ; he and his crew are doing a very very fantastic skilled job at teaching !
Thanks ! You have de-mystified a lot of things here ! So simple was your repair plan (clever) , clearly stated and enough detail to be able to make use of this strategy ourselves !!!
What are you going to teach us next ? Looking forward to it ! 🔧⚙️💻🔥
I appreciate you giving your years of experience tips to us technicians
Great video and I definitely learned some things today. I have some of that Stabilant 22 and it is some good stuff. Bernie Thompson from ATS is a big proponent of it.
This was a really great video. I have an airbag issue with my Outback, unfortunately it is with the passenger side so it's not as easy to get to as the steering wheel unit. But when I do get around to tearing into it I have saved this video so I can do some testing.
Very well presented and explained. Keep it up bro
This is how I was taught to test air bags. Instead of stabilant22 or similar we have been using heated windshield repair kit stuff which has a lot of silver. Obviously you have to be more careful with that not to short the circuit but it has been flawless with no comebacks.
That is a very good video footage also very good explanation of knowledge. 👍
Great video, and very informative saving a lot of time in comparison to the diagnostic tree..! Thanks again.
in fact i really love this steps of diagnosing airbag issue, thank you so much
Another great presentation, thankyou Sherwood.
This was a GREAT video. GREAT TIP!
Thanks for the tips Sherwood and Clayton.
Great tip! Thank you!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your testing methods for this!
Your videos are so well explained & informative. We appreciate your time making these videos. Throw in clear camera work to the guy behind the scenes filming these. If you give up the shop, you can easily teach automotive.
Great Job ! Thanks
Another great job my friend. I learned something new again. Thank you.
Awesome, thanks again for the great educational video.
Very helpful ,Thank you..
Legit content! Thx.
Absolutely brilliant thanks so much for this video makes testing so much easier.
Thanks you , this is great 👍
This is a great channel!
I like the strategy so that i gave you thumbs up 👍
AWESOME, approach and thought process thanks for sharing. cheeeeers
Exellent...!!! 👌
Awesome
That’s was a great video and all but the elephant in the room is the Lamborghini Countach. When is that video coming out? You can’t walk by our childhood poster car and not say something about it. Haha
Great vid, don't see how you can do it that way without a bomb squad suit on!! I held my breath the whole time!
Good way to speed up a hard process
I came here to find out how to check what each airbags resistance is for my BMW 330cic. I’m new to BMW and was not sure if they be the same ohm as my GM and Nissan stuff. I’m looking to remove them and add a resistor and keep the dash light off. I have the OTOFIX it’s a great scanner and a great way to check the airbag ohm size per bag!!

Thanks for creating another great video. What do you think of using DeoxIT on an airbag connector if you don’t have Stabilant?
A1 content
Could understand everything. Very logical troubleshooting. It could have been a contact problem but with the resistor in both positions you were able to rule that out. 👍
Can you tell us how your company name came about? Best regards from Germany
This is awesome content but could you guys make a video on how to replace that clock spring unit.
The classic circuit response test
Great tip, thank you! I have a question about an alternative method. Can you substitute a jumper wire for the resistor with the assumption that the resistance will drop to around 0 ohms?
S22…developed by the elevator industry. Correct, can be used on any electrical connection. However, we found if connections physically disconnected, you should “ refresh” connection with a drop or two .
For my Subaru, there’s a special tool, a test harness made for Subaru vehicles. There are very specific steps and cautions. I’m not sure if I would use a scan tool not designed for my vehicle airbag system. I’ll wait for your review of the OtoFix.
Fantastic Content. Thank You. No shame in wearing readers for close work 🤷♂️😂
Brilliant video tutorial outstanding

15:09 hold the phone. 😂 That tells you the problem is after the crimp on the clock spring connector. It will be the clock spring at least 99% of the time but it could be pin fitment or corrosion in the connector. Edit: I commented too soon; you covered it at 18:09.
An excellent example of how to prove your circuit integrity before firing the part’s cannon. Makes you wish the manufacturer would require the experts to take a fully assembled vehicle and follow their own instructions to see how ridiculous the procedure can become. At the stealership the customer will likely be charged for the book time to follow the tree and the mechanic will gladly take the time but reach the same conclusion as you performing the same work around using common sense.
On Generac liquid cooled generators they use a 4 to 20ma loop for sensors. We carry a 1 k ohm resistor to jump out failed sensors for troubleshooting. Its helps to see the Raw value vs processed value with a known good value. Sometimes if its an emergency and a low coolant level sensor has failed its nice to be able to jump out the sensor to keep the unit working until we can get a sensor.
Hi , What to do with srs module if there's crash data still exists even after replacing the deployed air bag the light indicates air bag and not turned off
i have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 air bag light comes on from time to time not real regular NO CODES when it comes on only stays on couple minutes and goes off any ideas
A faster diagnosis of the clock spring is to graph the resistance while turning the steering wheel. After your tests you could also do a pin drag test on the connector to the clock spring
The resistance is stored in a 16 bit register that can have a maximum value of 65535 milliohm, that gets rounded of to 65,54 ohm on open circuit.
Applied Science made a video about the "magic in a bottle" ruclips.net/video/VpRrP3sqQLw/видео.html
Nice 👍🏼 ! Thanks ! 👊🏼
That repair is free from the dealer. Did you tell the customer that or did you charge for the repair?
Can you add the link to the 2.5 resistor. I didn't see it. Just the stabliant
mou.sr/3GyqT99
Looks like the price went up but you can get 1000 for $41.
I went to amazon to search for the resistors. They sell logs of 2.2 ohm resistors, but not 2.5 ohm. Is it possible you're using 2.2 ohm resistors? Thanks for this very cool tip!
Yeah, I think they are 2.2 ohms.
@@theroyaltyautoservice Thank you! That was a really great tip on an intimidating part of the car to work on. Your videos are better every time.
Thanks for another great video guys. A question if i may? What would be your approach to this fault if the SRS ECU didnt provide the resistance PIDs? You would think that all modern ECUs do show this information however the brand i work on, those resistançe readings are not provided (even 2023 models), thanks
Very common problem, especially on older vehicles. First, document your code, then clear it. Cycle the key and see if it returns. If it does, then it is a hard fault. Find the ciciut and install the resistor. Clear the code and cycle the key. If the code is gone, then you've found your problem. Cycle the key multiple times just to be sure. Hth.
@@theroyaltyautoservice Thanks for the reply guys
Hello
That is exactly how I was tough to test air bag deployment loops. One question I have is how do you test other components is the system? Crash sensors or acceleration sensers?
Unfortunately you have to take those on a system by system basis. Some times they are simple switches but sometimes they are mini modules.
Many times other functions on the wheel also will not work. SRS light and cruise won’t work or radio functions not working then a clock spring is the most common fault. Simple logic wins out every time.
19:07 just a friendly reminder:
I think you forgot to add the link.
Added! Thanks!
@@theroyaltyautoservice My pleasure and thank you for making these videos! 👍
OTOFIX IS AUTEL, why should LAUNCH make extra money selling to other vendors and not giving them the full load of software, now AUTEL has opened their eyes also in a way to sell extra bits of SW based on other hardware makers' needs.
It does not look resistance, that is wrong information. It feed reference voltage and expect certain voltages back. It calculates the resistance by voltages values. Even your multimeter does not see resistance, it is all voltages. You should be professional and share the professional information. Learn OHM law!
Buy cheap IPA and it works too. No need something very expensive
