It's literally JUST costumes and set though, which does not a movie make. The storytelling was lazy at best, and just confusing at worst. Absolutely zero cohesion. @@hairiseverythingSome Marvel films have had nominations or won for sound editing, costumes, special effects, etc. There can be a film with Oscar worthy set design, but the rest is mediocre or bad. Whether you like it or not, their performances were incredible, and While I do agree than Ryan’s Ken was a show stealer in a lot of scenes he was in, Margot’s Barbie is truly the beating heart and soul of the movie… the line delivery and the comedic timing, the physicality of a doll turning human, the emotional breakdowns and development… I really could go on and on praising her as an actress cause in every movie she is in she is nothing less than incredible. I really hope The Academy will acknowledge her performance with a nomination this year, even though more comedy based performances tend to get easily overshadowed by the dramatic ones.
Well update I guess: Nominating Ryan for Ken and not Margot for Barbie…YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS UP LIKE WHAT???? Whatever it’s so dumb Margot has now been snubbed two years in a row for two AMAZING PERFORMANCES. Like come on this is just dumb.
One year ago, I never imagined myself being hyped for a Barbie movie! Barbie’s transformation wasn’t as predictable as I thought it would be and thank goodness it wasn’t. When the Kens take over, the plot thickens. As a young single 30 year old college grad, my inner cinephile just had to be part of this for the sake of creativity. And I can relate to Ken that being single can be sometimes depressing. But I’m trying to mainly focus on myself before facing the fear of commitment! As a semi romcom nerd, I was expecting more of a typical Barbie/Ken love story. But I ended up a graceful loser in the end. I was ready for I’m Just Ken but not the context! Barbie is one of the few surprises I’ve seen on the big screen in 2023! A surprisingly entertaining film. Congrats to everyone involved
Shame Gloria and Sasha never got to see Barbyland before the Kens changed everything. This movie has the best production design I've ever seen for a movie!
can't believe that a movie about barbie could make me cry. Despite everything that's been said, I'm astonished that I get the message perfectly clear. About the balance of men and women. it took barbie for me to realize how men rule this world and barbieland could be the only world where women are valued. but how it's also not a good thing because in barbieland, the kens are suffering.
You can really feel Ken's heart break when she tell's him to go away because it's not his house. And when he does the same to her, you can feel he is still hurt and have no pleasure at all on kicking her away.
If you thought the feminism was "oversimplified", don't forget some people don't have the same privilege to have the knowledge you have over the subject. This movie was simply, perfect.
I thought it was simplified so that the little bits of gems and social commentaries could shine through. I was surprised to see that so many people missed the point completely. People keep blaming it on a lack of media literacy, but it seems to me a lot of people have never read a book in their lives. It's stange. And this is coming from someone who is dyslexic and struggled to read as a child.
The premise of the movie is simple, intelligent and would almost only work for a Barbie movie, it's not some done-before movie plot. Completely brilliant. You have to be very blind or very thick not to see it.
Well deserved nominations. Idgaf at what people say because this movie works! Though I don’t think it would win best picture but costume design and supporting roles , YES!
As MUCH as I love Barbie, I don't think it's gonna win Best Picture. I do believe it might win Costume and Design, Best Song, and I'm crossing my fingers for Margot Robbie for Lead Actress.

This movie was a lot of fun! I grew up with Barbie and I loved it! It brings up both men and women while at the same time not taking itself too seriously!
This movie was written and produced for the females and grown women who felt sad that they didn't measure up to the beauty standards, specifically for the body. Before the pandemic, if you DIDN'T have the idealistic measurements of an iconic Playboy centerfold and the stereotypical bombshell shape, and a gorgeous face with doll-like facial features, you'd go complaining to the advertising industry and the media to change the standards, apparently. Tough empowered females learn to make the best of what mother nature gave them!!! They just make the best of what they have!!!

I don’t like the storytelling of this movie; it has poor comprehension and a lot of plot holes. That’s why I don’t enjoy the movie; for me, beyond the aesthetic, it’s not a good film. However, the sets, most of the actors, the music, the color, and Margot and Ryan (who was the best of the film) were great. In that way, it well deserves an Oscar nomination.
