- Trying to get a MIDI keyboard to control your Moog Mother-32 synthesizer, and having some trouble? It's not quite as easy as just plugging it in, but it's quick to learn and once it's set, it's set. Unless you change it.
NOTE! Be sure to have both your devices set to MIDI Channel 1 ! (or at least the same channel)
Helpful comments welcome, as are questions and suggestions for future videos! - Хобби
This helped me out so much! Using a Novation SL61 MKIII in Ableton Live and your instructions were crystal clear
Perfect. Picked up key step yesterday. Incredible fun.
I love this video. It's quick and witty. Thanks for making this.
This is right up my street. I have had a Moog in my life every day for over 40 years and I am still learning. Have two M32's and a Grandmother and now a DFAM on its way. Will be very interested in what you do on this channel. Nice one.
Thank you! The possibilities on these instruments seem limitless!
Brilliant-that is super helpful. Thank you
thank you so much for this!!! this is a super helpful video :)
thank you so much for this , I have a mother 32 arriving tomorrow and much prefer too work with midi controllers , THX!
Muchas gracias por el tutorial!!
Great!! So if I wanted to connect my mpc live to the mother32, could I do -----mpc >keystep>mother32? Using the mpc to trigger midi notes on the mother would be amazing, if not just having a sequence in the mpc where the mother’s sequence is started stopped at different points... do you think that’s possible? Thank you so much! This channel looks great!
MY HERO !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks
Great tutorial! A question , in this conficguration can i connect novation circuit tracks? and how? Thanks in advance. Regards!!
very helpful :)
One question. I wanna control the tempo buy the tap on the midi keyboard for live band purposes. Does thet work?
How do I use the Keystep and not trigger the 32 to run? Or how do I get rid of the ability for Mother to run when ARP enabled?
cheers mate!
Wondering about a creative way to hook up keystep w mother and DFAM?
Hello, thanks a lot for this video !
Another question: I am able to controll the keyboard of the mother32, but unfortunatley I am not able to work with the sequencer or the arpeggiatior of the keystep. is it necessary to do some setups with the keystep with the midi control center ?
(it appears to me that a sequence is running on the keystep, but the midi light of the mother doesn't even blink)
thanks in advance !
Leave the white switches both down ( to internal). The Arturia keys will still work via MIDI and you'll get the arpeggiator back.
Heyyy I need help . I’ve tried the process with my moot m32 and arturia 37 and no success . I did it more than 10 times , proved the midi cable with the crave and it works , so the midi cable is fine. Any help? Thanks
how do you connect three mother 32s up together with this arturia keystep and have them all on seperate midi channels?
Once I connected my keystep to my Mother 32, neither the sequencer or arpeggiator would work. I read that you have to switch it to Internal, which I did, and still nothing. I then read about using the control centre to turn off the 'transports' messages. That still did not solve the issue. Any thoughts on what could be the problem here? What am I a missing?
I am trying to follow your instructions..but still stuck with same results, but first let me describe my setup..I have a ROLI Lumini key MPE MIDI controller..and I discovered that I need a MIDI Host connection box, so I got a DOREMiDi USB midi host box..I can get the Lumi key controller to send midi data but the Mother 32 only plays on 1 note/key,,and it does send velocity data as well as pitch bend info data..do you recommend a different midi host controller? Any and all help IS GREATLY appreciated .
Thanks a lot , that was super fast and not painful at all, Now show us how to make nice ambiant sound ;) Please
Thank you! We'll get into some basic patches in the coming weeks.
I can't sync Tempo/Gate length and Lfo rate with the global midi clock.
I have an old Roland PC 200 Mk ll and I'm trying to use with my Mother 32, after followed all these steps I still can't get the Roland to play anything from the Mother. I have no idea what's going on. Someone?
If you use a larger MIDI-capable keyboard, will it control octaves above and below the current setting on Mother-32?
Yep! Very handy when you want to record sequences that go beyond the M32s one-octave buttons.
I did this and now the light above the midi in button has stopped flashing! Not sure what I've done. I've got a Moog mother 32 plugged into an arturia key step which is plugged into reaper
So if i have mother 32 and arturia keystep. Can i play sequence on mother and then improvise on keystep at the sametime?
The M32 is monophonic, so, no. It’s only one voice at a time.
no midi notes with the keystep here. But same settings on M32 I use an old M-audio keyboard and it works fine. So it's the keystep that is the issue. But I can't figure it out.

Does Mother receives velocity from keyboard?
It sure does. If you have a sequence playing on the keyboard, it will control the velocity on Mother.
unfortunately nothing happens. no signal. no flashing light above the midi in button. So no data entering the mother. what might be wrong? Anything to configurate on the keystep, like channel - selection?
Same for me. Did you solve this?
It’s tough to diagnose without knowing the whole setup, but I’ll bet that one of them is not on MIDI channel 1. On the Keystep, “hold the Shift button and press the key that corresponds to the desired MIDI channel.” On the M32, check page 58 of the manual for the steps on how (it’s not nearly that simple). And, of course, try the dumb things that we sometimes forget: make sure each of the cables/connectors actually work (I’ve had bad patch cables; I forget that’s a thing), make sure your Keystep can send a MIDI signal successfully to something else. Your M32’s midi port probably isn’t broken, but you never know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@moogschool With a bit of tinkering (my own attempt and yours), it now works. Thanks!
How do i turn off the moog32 transport so i can use the ksp as the player/sequncer?
Leave the white switches both down ( to internal). The Arturia keys will still work via MIDI and you'll get the arpeggiator back.
Does my midi keyboard then plug into my computer with the USB output? Or do I need to use the USB output at all? I followed this tutorial but it's not working. The MIDI light does not light up
if using Arturia Keystep make sure midi channel is at 1
hey dude, I have followed these steps and cannot get the keystep to play anything from the mother 32? I have no idea what's missing, if there a previous set up action I have to do with the keystep or something? Many thanks

same!
Same here did anyone sort this?
@@jamestin8601 it turned out I had the wrong midi cable I bought another on Amazon and worked fine 🙂
Can you control tempo and use patterns made on the keyboard like this?
Hi Clare - Great questions, with surprisingly complex answers! (or not surprisingly; one of the simultaneously best and most frustrating aspects of modular synths is that there are multiple ways of doing things. There's no right way or wrong way, only one that works or that doesn't.) It's tough to be concise and precise, and people use different words to mean the same thing! 😬
First, Arturia can definitely control the tempo of Mother (or anything else) either by playing the sequence through MIDI Out OR using the Sync Out (port on the back of Arturia) to a Tempo In. Then just control the rate with the Rate knob on Arturia.
(Or both! For example: your Arturia melodic sequence playing/triggering Mother via MIDI, and your Sync Out on Arturia to the Tempo In on DFAM).
If by "patterns made on the keyboard," you mean sequences, ie.: You've recorded a melodic/rhythmic sequence on Arturia, and you want to use that sequence (including the rests) to control a *different* melodic sequence that you've made on Mother, then no, you can't. It will just play Mother's sequence at the rate of Arturia. Mother's melody will override Arturia's in this case.
If you play back a sequence from Arturia into Mother at a certain rate, Mother will play at that rate. If you increase or decrease the rate on Arturia's Rate knob, Mother will follow. BUT! You can also override Arturia's rate by -- this is key: while Mother's sequence is playing -- changing the rate on Mother's Rate knob.
I'll make the next video about a couple of different simple rate sync scenarios, and then maybe another with more variations.
@@moogschool Can you kindly include a tutorial on syncing the arturia + mother 32 and logic x? Thanks so much for your posts + channel - this made my day!!
@@KimbleMcCann75 Sure! Was planning one for the Matriarch anyway, and the process will work on all the Moogs! Your comment made my day!
@@moogschool Speaking of Matriarch...guess what this dude just ordered?!?!?
@@KimbleMcCann75 YES! As soon as I got mine, I knew I should have just bought one to begin with. So much fun. Congrats!
I connected my keystep to my mother the same way but now I can 't use my arpeggiator anymore. Do you know how to fix this? Thanks in advance.
Don't switch dipswitches on back to the up position (MIDI) - leave them both down (internal). Keystep keys will still work via MIDI and you'll get arpeggiator back.
@@Fairweatherstudio SOLID
Okay but why won't the Arpeggiator work on my Keystep with the m32??
did you figure this out? all set up but arp doest work when back switches turned up for MIDI
@@78thandSynth Yes i did!! i followed this video and it immediately fixed my issue! ruclips.net/video/a84t5uuSchM/видео.html
also i have my kestep switches set to internal, so try that if it doesn't work with the midi setting. hope this was helpful
@@Jesslayc Absolutely yes. Thank you!!
Gosh, it works only if I stay and play through the setup mode, when I leave setup mode it disconnects again. How odd... this is not supposed to happen. Can anyone help me out solving this?
I have the same issue :(
I have the same Issue now, did any of you find a solution ? thanks a lot in advance !
I have followed all instructions and no midi signal is getting into my synth, what am I doing wrong?
I’m going to paste this from another reply I just posted, for ease: It’s tough to diagnose without knowing the whole setup, but I’ll bet that one of them is not on MIDI channel 1. it doesn't work for me, maybe because of the update
