LR2 is hugely underrated and by far a Land Rover. It never caught on here in the states, but it's a terrific vehicle and does everything you'd need a Land Rover to do. Highly recommend and my 2013 LR2 is absolutely fantastic .
Freelander 2’s seem to struggle in mud unless there is a more firm surface below.I find switching the DSC off helps and staying in second gear if possible.Steering is certainly an issue and tyre choice probably makes some difference.
Are you or the group of your friends happy with the reliability of the Freelander 2? I am also considering to buy one.. How is the experience with 2.2 diesel + auto gearbox?
I've owned 2 and never had a single issue with either of them. Like any other make/model of reasonably expensive car just make sure that you keep the servicing up to date.

I’m very luke warm over fl2 clearance poor no crawler gear far to limiting fit snitching over light off-road I sold mine very fast
