As soon as you showed us the guts! I knew it was going to be a horror show! Holy mother, Mary of god! Talk about a Frankenstein radio 😳 that thing is most definitely a Halloween special. 💀🎃💀
I have. GTL 2000. It’s been sitting for a decade or two. Brought it up on a Variac everything worked. Let it idle for fourth minutes, now, frequency displays 92.2000 and doesn’t tx or receive. I’m sure it needs a cap job but, I read somewhere it can be the PLL chip. Any ideas? Plus where can I find a copy of the #1232 Technical bulletin? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Somebody had em' the cadillac of 2000gtl's, I bet the owner bragged for countless hours bout what his cobra could do. Even probably had a special top secret mod that he wasn't at liberty to discuss.
Oh my dear god. I thought the worst hacked up messes of mods came across my bench for the cobra 2000 gtl but this takes the cake by far. Im currently working on one where they literally took a carpet knife or exacto and cut the traces on the switch board among many other abuses but this one? wow is all I have
Yikes, what a slaughter at the Texas yokels hands. You really got more than your work cut-out on this one. Can humptey dumpty 2000gtl be assembled back in one piece?! Gone to the scrapheap, LOL!
Eric 12374 FM is what's used in many other countries. I sometimes hear people using FM here in the US. Also it use to be common for Amateur operators to add FM, do a simple channel modification and bingo, you now had a 10 meter AM/FM rig.
Hey Mike when I said about doing a 2000 GTL you didn't have to go to the rubbish dump to get one!!!!! Throw it back mate even I wouldn't tackle that one. Pete in OZ.
Jesus Pete. I think the little board with the cap, trimmer, and resistor next to the PLL was probably for FM deviation. I guess the relay and transistor was there to switch that into the VCO. Definitely better ways to add FM to the radio...
Definitely better ways to add FM to say the least. You have to give them credit, they spent some time doing it. And they even went the extra step on the board that has the FM IC by adding a separate piece of copper clad board on the bottom as a RF shield.
I wouldn't waste my time on that one.......sometimes things have been modified to a point where they are no longer useful. If it were a very rare radio I might spend the time on rainy nights, but a common rig like this would be relegated to the junk pile in my Lab
Harb's Elecronics Lab Relegated to the parts shelf after video was done. Definitely one of those radios not worth the expense to restore. Like you said, a common radio that can easily be found in a lot better condition.
It never ceases to amaze me how people who obviously have no idea how to do quality work will still have a go at major mods, and make a huge mess inside a piece of electronics like that........I have a few even worse than that here......I will start to put video's up soon and show a few. I bet you would have no trouble doing a "Fail" video on some as well lol Anyway, I would never discourage anyone for having a go, but sheesh, please start on something easy to get your skill level up first ;)
Harb's Elecronics Lab What's sad is a lot of effort went into adding FM to this radio and to then basically just hack it in so sloppy is sad. Yeah I have shelves full of butchered radios. Gives me a stiff neck all the head shaking I do.
I started to get dizzy looking at the bottom side. I have had spaghetti that was more orderly. I do not think I have ever seen anything not even on youtube that looked that bad.
I want to send an late 1980's SSB CB to you for re-cap and alignment and evaluation. How should I get in touch with you to do that? Thanks I really enjoy your video's! The radio function fine but I have only owned it for a couple of years. I can tell you that the inside looks pristine. It is an late 1980's Palomar SSB500 CB.She is a talker!

OMG. thats the most jacked radio i've ever seen, like stick a fork in it, it's done!
Brought a tear to my eye
Am I wrong in suggesting when doing the FM convert put it in a project box and keep it totally external on these.

Why would you want an FM board in a standard CB radio? if you are gonna do that get an export and leave the CB radio stock...

Scrap it for the parts and toss the rest in the hopper...
Well, if he is willing to pay for it...more money...more money.

Yup typical screwdriver expert that likely knows ZIP about electronics. It amazes me what people do to thier stuff..
And... the power supply filter board is upside down. :(
Thought I seen it all. I was wrong.
I'm NOT Completely sure. BUT, I Might be able to name the Shop💩that worked on this poor CB. He worked once on my Cobra too😡😞🙁😭😒❕
Whoever did that should have their soldering iron taken away.
That's a shame someone destroyed a classic !!
What in the name of lord God is that.Looks like Chernobyl disaster.
my sentiments exactly.
I could use the frequency counter
board
Holy Crap!
I started to get dizzy looking at the bottom side. I have had spaghetti that was more orderly. I do not think I have ever seen anything not even on youtube that looked that bad.
If I could have gotten it to go through my paper shredder I think it would have come out the other side neater than this.
