A phrase in backpacking is that you pack your fears and gear is a personal choice but if you're packing 2 jumpers and a down jacket (think that's what you said) that does sound excessive. Wear your waterproof over your down jacket if you need extra layers in the cold. Also, take drinking water from the hills. I would recommend investing in a filter like the Sawyer Squeeze. Thanks for uploading. 🏴⛰
I love the Osprey packs, I think they may be the best out there for hiking, everything I needed and lightweight. I would highly recommend GPS to every single walker, too often I start a walk on a clear day then end up only 10m visibility not long after and being stuck in the clag, making using the map extremely difficul. During winter I would never take out a bladder because it freezes up too easily, as I found out on Ben Macdui on a very cold January day! The only thing I would add to this pack is a extra pair of socks, too often they get wet in the Scottish highlands so nice to have a clean pair. Soon we will be out this lockdown and back to enjoying the hills again, especially how it has been the best winter we've had for many years. Been stuck in Glasgow since November with no real notable hills nearby, won't be long!
Highly rate the Osprey packs, I have a larger one for wild camping so looking forward to trying it out. Yes agree with you on GPS, got me out of trouble a few times! I know what you mean with the bladder, I usually leave it at home during Winter too, plus I find I drink less when its cold! Extra socks is also a good shout 👍 thanks for watching, hopefully we can all get back out there soon 🏔
I'd also recommend taking cable ties. Sounds like a weird one, but if a strap on your pack fails or the sole of your shoes comes off, you've got a quick fix.
Good wee video James. Two additional things I have is a whistle and my personal locator beacon. I think if you can add them you should! Cheers and thanks for sharing! Paul.
@@ScottishMunroJourney Hi James, I didn't want to commit to a subscription so went for the mcmurdo product. I think it's a fast find 220. One of those pieces of kit you hope not to use! Cheers Paul.
Great choice of waterproofs, the Rupal jacket is bomb proof i"ve been using it the past 3 years same with Berghaus pack light bottoms, never had to to Nikwax either,,,,although days like Monday i swap the rupal for a soft shell,,,,,was good meeting you on Am Bodach on Monday,,looking forward to the video,,,all the best Davie
Was stuck between the Saltoro and the Rupal, great jackets! But have to say the paclites are brilliant, the full length zip is so handy to get them on/off quickly, nice to meet you too Davie 😁 that was a cracking day on Monday, hopefully get video done soon 😁👍 All the best, James
Hi James, we always like watching your Munro adventures and like your channel. I'm a keen photographer and am interested in what camera you take with you. I know you take a DSLR with you, I have seen it clipped to your harness. I'm just curious about the weight of it really. I have taken my own Canon 6D with me with a spare lens and tripod but this can be as much as 2 to 3 kg to lug around. When your in your 60's its getting harder and harder😉. I am going to change my outfit to make it lighter, make it easier to carry but still able to get good images. I would be interested in what photography gear you carry and what extra weight it adds to your pack. Maybe make this a video topic over the winter. Cheers James, good luck on your Munro Journey.
The only other thing I rarely walk without is a flask of hot tea /coffee/ cup a soup: It really does help keep you warmer when you stop for lunch, especially on wet, miserable days.
Hi 🙋🏻♂️ I’ve just come across your channel after looking for a new hiking day pack. Very impressed with your video review here that I’ve subscribed to you. My name is Andy & I’m from Sussex England. ATB Andy
I would recommend a device for emergency in case something happens and there is no signal on your mobile phone. I also have a waterfilter. Yes, most of the water on Scottish mountains you can drink without filtering, but why take the risk while a filter or tablets are quite light.
Great video! Gear lists are one of those things that can get out of hand very quickly...Just some thoughts for you, with that in mind lol... I would add some puritabs for disinfecting water, some Imodium tablets if you don't have them already, a whistle and an emergency strobe...the ACR Firefly is a little pricy but a brilliant bit of kit. Although you mentioned a head torch, I think they are such a critical bit of safety kit, I would recommend carrying a second, even if it a relatively compact/basic one....the bivvy bag you are using is very light but will only offer minimal protection. It is a lot better than nothing, but especially in winter, I would urge you to consider a 3 layer blizzard bag, something that will provide some meaningful insulation. Another form of emergency shelter people either seem to love or hate is a bothy or storm shelter. I used a two person Vango for years until the windows cracked in storage, so i have just ordered a Rab superlite as a replacement. I have never had to spend the night in a storm shelter and hope I never have to, but better safe than sorry. Finally, if you carry a mobile phone, I would suggest a small power bank and the appropriate charger cable...Told you these lists can get out of hand! 😀
Thanks Peter 😁 Great feedback, appreciate it! As this was filmed over a year ago, I have already made some changes, such as puritabs, extra headtorch & power bank 😁 You are right about the bivvy, I will be looking to upgrade in the future.. Cheers, James
@@ScottishMunroJourneyCheers mate! I used to do a lot of deer stalking up in Scotland, and the only time I got into a potentially bad situation was getting caught out on the open hill in a large clear fell area after dark without a working head torch...Ever since then I have always carried a spare even if just a small LED hand torch....
Just one more thing. Your down jacket, I can’t recommend highly enough the Trek 100 down jacket from decathlon. They are, in my opinion better than the top name brands & just for a fraction of the price. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed. Cheers!
Great vid, really helpful advice and tips. My girlfriend and I started doing the Munro’s last year and managed a respectable 18! We use a GoPro hero8 but haven’t managed to fully master the editing, what camera/editing software do you use or recommend?
Thanks for watching Joseph, 18 is a great achievement! Hopefully we can all get back out there soon, I use Filmora to edit now, find it really simple to use and edit footage - it also has a feature to remove the fisheye effect from GoPro so would be worth looking at! All the best, James

Best wild camping channel I've found!
Top advice. Good video. Other items are Whistle, insulating tape which has a multitude of repair uses and a couple of cable ties. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Graham, great tips 😁

I forgot Midge Nets - Especially in Scotland 😝
Let me know what you guys class as essential for your day hikes 😀🏔
Stay safe,

Thanks for the tips for a novice hill walker. Well presented and informative.
Thanks Steven 😁

Great advice, I have since bought a waterfilter.. I am also investing in an emergency device for when I do Knoydart/Fisherfield

Great video pal👍🏻 loved the clips showing u using the gear😎! Hip flask full of whisky missing from the list or is that just on my list🥃😂

JRE is essential!
Review osprey hikelite 32 for long day. Are you comfort without hipbelt?
Ive had it on for 12-13 hours and its still comfy after that!
What boots do you wear? Thanks
La Sportiva, Trango towers 👍 they are great boots, the tread wears pretty quick on them though..
@@ScottishMunroJourney thanks for that, I’m enjoying your channel and loving the beluga lagoon as well!!
100kgs of clothes then
Just whats required for the Scottish Weather 😄
