fun fact: Notch came back to programming recently and is currently updating us on the progress of his new game (in an alpha phase) so that's interesting
One game you forgot to mention that Notch created before minecraft was Legend of the Chambered, which he started working on in 2001. He made multiple different versions of the game with the most well known version releasing in May of 2008. In the 2008 version of LotC, there’s various textures from that game that notch would directly rip and place into minecraft, those textures being Leather, Chainmail, Iron and Studded armour, the iron sword, apples, quivers, the inventory icons and even the text font that minecraft uses.
game: **is pixelated and in Notch's art style** this fucking guy: if THIS game was NEVER made, Notch would have NEVER made Minecraft and MY CHANNEL would never exist!!
the mentions of "wow these textures look super reminiscent of early Minecraft" feel a bit silly imo. there's nothing exclusively Minecraft about the style there, that's just what amateur pixel art textures look like. Take the basic primary color of the thing you're trying to depict and add some subtle noisy detail. Minecraft didn't invent the concept of blue water
Ofcourse they are reminiscent of early minecraft, as early minecraft popularized the game with Notch's brand of amateur pixel art. It has a distinct look to it, with it's oversaturated colors and heavy use of noise in the textures. Minecraft didn't invent blue water , but you could easily tell if a game used minecraft's water textures
One of my favorite games Notch made is called "VVVV 4k". It's a 4k version of the indie game VVVVVV, which I was obsessed with as a kid. It was actually my first exposure to Notch's work before I even really knew about Minecraft.
The game Miners 4K looks a lot like a Lemmings clone, which might have been the inspiration behind it. Also since that dungeon crawler is playable maybe you could do a quick playthrough if no one else has yet. I've actually seen Wurm Online as a game before, had no idea he worked on it. Should check it out.
Very interesting, I always knew that he made games prior, but wasn't aware of the extensive history besides bits and pieces of RubyDung! Great video as always
I think it would also be nice to note Minecraft 4k (a 4k minecraft-like terrain generator with a few block types) and Minicraft, the latter if I remember correctly was actually released before Minecraft, and is a top-down survival game sort of similar to, well, Minecraft, made for another 48-hour game jam
It's crazy how everyone always talks about Infiniminer or RubyDung as the Minecraft precursors, but no one ever brings up Wurm. It's literally the closest thing to Minecraft before Minecraft, and everyone forgot.
Good video :) I actually made a similar video for this topic awhile back, but really wasn't happy with how it turned out, I'd say this is a better rundown of the really interesting history leading up to Minecraft that is so rarely talked about.

Would you be interested in doing a let’s play in an old version or with the Better Beta modpack? I have seen some cool 100 Days styles videos in old version but they aren’t as fun as watching a world slowly grow over time.
I absolutely loved the pacing of this video! Super interesting topic as well! (I also wanna know what shader are you using in this vid? The fluffy clouds look gorgeous)
wow amazing video i learnt so much about the history of minecraft thank you paladin ryan for teaching us all about how our favourite game came to be. keep slaying
good video and i learned a lot more from it than the surface level stuff most other youtubers mention but... it's painful to look at you mentioning minecraft every time green pixel grass is seen in a game. or the fact that you didn't even know what lemmings is
something crazy

Ye that looked so fun i remember there were even fonctional computers@@kobold7466
Fuck, this guy doesn't know what Lemmings is. I'm now officially old.
My thoughts exactly, I'm glad I wasn't the only one! 😂
It's rare to see a video discussing the pre-mine craft Notch days, this is extremely fascinating!

Miners 4k was specifically based on Lemmings, which is clear given the character sprites were ripped from it
We a rare breed
don't worry, i've been making sure to ridicule ryan for not knowing it on the server
It also has similarities to Clonk, I wonder if Notch has played (or seen) that :P
any pixel art: OMG MINECRAFT

Learning that Notch worked for King was easily the biggest surprise

The Rubyland inventory slots are exactly the same as the Minecraft ones, so even the latest Minecraft version has something from 30 years ago!

One thing i noticed! 4:24 On the right there is an item slot thing. It looks EXACTLY like minecraft, even though notch made this in the late 90s!
8:35 bro insulted the lemmings 🥲
It's crazy how everyone always talks about Infiniminer or RubyDung as the Minecraft precursors, but no one ever brings up Wurm. It's literally the closest thing to Minecraft before Minecraft, and everyone forgot.
Thought this was from a bigger channel because it popped up in my recommendations, but good video dude keep up the work
8:33 This is just lemmings.
5:40 That looks like Notch from an alternative universe. Has he made a game that transcends space and time or something?
MARKUS PERSON, BURGER PERSON. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Infinite Mario Bros was my favorite
Zachary with his Infiniminer influenced Notch's early Minecraft.

woah lemmings
notches continued obsessions with rpgs explains the light fantasy elements that were introduced from beta 1.8 onwards

legend of the chambered (apple, sword, all armor and quiver)

I'm torn between wishing Rubylands had come to fruition and being glad it didn't since Minecraft likely wouldn't exist if it had.

There's also a Minecraft 4k
wow amazing video i learnt so much about the history of minecraft thank you paladin ryan for teaching us all about how our favourite game came to be. keep slaying
I learnt that Ryan knows 3 very specific things from the 1990 demoscene and literally nothing else.
That music at the end sounds like a remix of Gymnopedie 1. Where might I be able to find it?
