1940s Chocolate Layer Cake

My recreation of a recipe devised by Cadbury's during the the Second World War. This and others formed a leaflet which sold for 1d. in aid of the Red Cross. The original recipe calls for Bournville cocoa but you can use any good quality cocoa of your choice. I pimped up the recipe with a splash of vanilla extract!

It is also very chocolaty. I was surprised by the intense chocolate richness and flavour of the icing despite the humble ingredients. The cake kept well in a tin for 2 or 3 days and the leftovers I used in a trifle.
