If ever there's a game that deserves a reboot, one that stays faithful to the feel of the original while updating the visuals and sounds, this is it.

I think it's just that the genre is not popular enough to make it inviting enough for publishers. Also I think the "TIE Fighter" license is with EA currently.
Some modders are doin it for the X-Wing game on moddb. Search for XWVM.

The 3D update is only 640*480, but it is pretty good on my 48" 4k TV. The only problem is that you can't use the mouse in-game. Aqcuiring a missile lock on a T/D, T/A or A-Wing with a gamepad is a pain in the *ss.
Watching this reminded me of the times when my hands danced on the keyboard like a spider on crack. Switching power from weapons, shields, throttle, tractor beam and issuing flight group commands. I'd also equip my fighter with rockets/bombs for the capital ships then Ion blast them down until disabled and then pick at them at my leisure. It felt really good to be an imperial.

Sure beats the primitive repetitiveness of X-Wing and the obsolete graphics and set-ups of Wing Commander I and II.

We should take a moment to appreciate how Zaarin came within a hair's breadth of killing Palpatine, Vader and Thrawn multiple times during his insurrection and none of them had the slightest suspicion he planned to seize power.
At least that's what they make you to believe. If you ask Palpatine, it's all part of the plan ;)
@@LPhoenix I'm sure he'd say that, but he was caught off guard by a few coups. Plus Zaarin's attempt actually did irreparable damage to the Empire. Part of the reason Thrawn wasn't at Endor was he was finishing Zaarin off and since the bulk of the TIE Defenders and Avengers were tied to Zaarin, they weren't at Endor either and indeed the Empire stayed largely away from Starfighter advancement for over a decade after his death as the two models were tarnished by his coup. He might have also inspired the rampant Warlordism post Endor as Zaarin revealed that anyone with a sizable fleet loyal to them could make a bid for the Throne. Two other Grand Admirals would follow his example and become Warlords-Grunger and Pitta, with most of the rest making power plays for themselves after Endor.

@@grandadmiralzaarin4962 So basically, Zaarin's selfish desire for power doomed the Empire. I'm not surprised as Palpatine created the very environment where power hungry individuals could flourish and where selfish ambition was encouraged over working together so Zaarin's actions along with what other warlords did after Endor was Palpatine's own fault.
Palpatine may have been super cunning at rising to power but he sucked at running his Empire as he was an evil arrogant man-child which led to his downfall.

Well, there's the kiddified Super Bombad Racing (although I think it's hard to get these days, I don't know) and Racer's Revenge, Ep. I: Racer's sequel (which is unfortunately an old PlayStation exclusive); so, any plans to make a personal almost perfectionist playthrough of Racer?
Never tried that yet myself. Is it available on Steam/GOG?
@@michaelandreipalon359 No, I have no plans for Racer at the moment. After TFTC, I'll probably do XvT Imperial (much faster than the Rebel side) and an XWA playthough.
You can get it's 100% free source port at rvgl.org/ . There are a LOT of additional content for it too. I'd start with the base game first. It even has crossplay multiplayer

Memories, memories. I played this game a lot when I was an undergraduate in the mid 90’s. This was the most memorable mission. Does it get any more thrilling than having Darth Vader as your wingman? I think not!

Man, did I play this game to death as a teen. I had everything for it, including the expansion where you got to fly the Missile Boat and take down TIE Defenders with a tractor beam and tons of missiles. Sadly, there was a break-in at my house many years ago, and I’m sure this was one of the CDs that was stolen. I kept most of my favorite games, even ones I hadn’t played in years, in a CD wallet in my laptop bag, and the thieves took the entire bag.
That sucks, but I usually say: it could've been worse!

One has to turn on the subtitles to really enjoy these videos. They add an extra spark of comedy to them.

Well yeah, this game came out before the prequels so there wasn't any actual correct pronunciation back then. Most audio books (Thrawn Trilogy) back then pronounced Coruscant 'Coru-skant' and wasn't given the silent accent until the The Phantom Menace. So it was prequels that got it wrong?
Coruscant is also depicted far differently in the pre-prequels content. It was often depicted as a forested planet.
I’m pretty sure the prequels got almost everything wrong.
Whatever, both pronunciations are accurate. Just look at how we pronounce Arkansas (although I prefer Ark-an-saw).

Battlefront 2 2017 is sanitized, while Squadrons feels too basic, that's for sure.
Then again, at least the latter can still have a chance of redemption via a bigger and better sequel. A TIE Fighter to the first game's X-Wing, to be exact.

@@LPhoenix Such is the flaws of the Motive Studios devs having to make the admittedly really good (yet still not definitive) Dead Space Remake whilst possibly being tasked with a Marvel's Iron Man game.
What they (as in every Imperial, including the traitors) do not realize is that the Emperor has foreseen this and is just looking vulnerable so as to appear as the victim (the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon attested to that).
Also, the one who "neutralized" him is actually Arden Lyn, an ancient Dark Jedi rendered comatose from the early years of the Old Republic and the Old Jedi Order, and also an original character from the otherwise contentious Star Wars brawling game Masters of Teras Kasi.
I wonder why Vader picked the Delta 6 designation and not Delta 2.

Lore: After being hustled to the chaotic and very busy (also, currently repaired) bridge of the Garrett by four Stormtroopers, Maarek first meets Darth Vader face to face, so to give a full reminder of what he felt of Grand Admiral Zaarin personally then and now; I don't want to fully state this moment, but know this, our pilot was shocked and awed by the former "Hero with No Fear" and his imposing features, powerful Force aptitude (sensed unwittingly), and awfully tall length. After that was done, Vader now assigned himself to fly with the ace General (Colonel in the Official Strategy Guide)... or it was Maarek Stele assigning himself to fly with the Dark Lord and arguably the best starfighter pilot in the galaxy.
Meanwhile, a TIE Defender design holo kept by Zaarin's traitor forces was successfully retrieved from the clutches of the now escaped Hamo Blastwell/"Commander Trace". The traitor Grand Admiral isn't at the very least displeased.
Gameplay: 1st TIE Defender mission out of 14. Bask in it, for it'll be your only craft for at least three Battles in a row, this one included.

Earth is either implied to be, yes, in a galaxy far, far away (as seen in a surprisingly sad Star Wars Tales crossover with Indiana Jones; no, really, I'm not kidding) or a world from an alternate universe (as seen in the Supernatural Encounters novella; the Earth there is even implied to be the same one shown in American Graffiti and THX 1138).
It's so funny hearing Coruscant pronounced incorrectly before the Prequels happened.
From another point of view, you could say that this is how you should pronunce it, as this is the first ever media which did it. ;)

Is this the Thrawn dlc? I remember Zaarin meeting with Mon Mothma and we were elite imperial agents with that force lightning tattoo the Emperor gave us. In charge of putting down the traitors and we had to fight TIEs for the first time. They were so hard to hit compared to those lumbering X and Y wings…
No, this is still the base game, up until the end of Battle 7.

I just cracked up that was a "Villains vs Villains" mission. This is what happens if you let villains fight against another villains.

They're charming, but they don't seem to have the bittersweet romance feel of "heroes vs. heroes"... small wonder why I'm into Kingdom Come, The Dark Knight Returns, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion, and Justice League Unlimited.

How do you have the old graphics and music while having the voiceovers?
There are 3 versions of the game: Floppy, Collector's CD-ROM and Collector's Series. I'm playing the 2nd one, which differs from the 1st in somewhat better graphics and voiceover.

I was wondering the same thing when I played. Came to check this video to see if it was the same. When you play the previous mission it'll say for Alpha 2 to rearm with the transport for you are playing as Alpha 1.

a very exciting mission I have to say, Unfortunately my game runs no longer on my modern PC :'(
Any version of the game can run on a modern PC. Depending on which version you have, you need to do different things, but running them should be achievable for all of them. Windows version should even run without any fiddling as far as I know
I assume you have the DOS version: You should be able to install it and run it inside DOSBox. There are plenty of tutorials on the net how to do it. It's not straight forward, but shouldn't be too hard

@@michaelandreipalon359 He was asking if you can shoot down Vader. He tried it and his hull only went down to 1%. This is because he is set to invulnerable
Did anyone else ever experience Vader flying to the frigate like he's scripted, but instead of docking he just smashes into it and causes the mission to fail?
I've had other missions where critical ships would smash into a captial ship and fail one of the goals.
At least he's with Padme then... I think.

Squadrons tried so hard to mimic these old games and came close. But it was too much arcade and woke politics not enough personal story and straight simulation.
The developers said that they were taking a lot of inspiration of the X-wing games, played it a lot. I assume they would've made something closer to them if they had full reign about the game and probably EA didn't let them.
I actually haven't played it personally
You almost lost me at "woke politics" (seriously, that's a terrible excuse and should always be deemed as unholy hypocrisy), but yeah, it being not that personal and high stakes ruined its campaign longevity. Even the console exclusive Ace Combat games have more heart in my experience.
I would love this game with 4k graphics update and new missions.
