Alan Clarke and Graham Nash's harmonies, Tony Hick's perfect guitar work and vocals, Bobby Elliot's amazing drumming and Bernie Calvert's solid bass playing and even better keyboards. There will never be another quite like The Hollies.
Frank Lee, sir, couldn't agree more with you!! They were unique in every fashion! I just loved them! Had the pleasure of doing/covering a number If their songs in classic rock bands I was in back in Tucson AZ..
It's so refreshing to see bands like this live. When they made these recordings, they somewhat toned them down, because that was what the market expected of them. They were good pop songs, but here in a live setting...they are driving it hard like a 60s R&B band. That drummer is an absolute BEAST.
Yeah, speaking of which, have seen footage of Hicks playing that Rickenbacker Mapleglo 360/12, with the other six strings removed. Same kind of Rick 12 McGuinn had and Tom Petty..Had one exactly like that, unfortunately had to sell it and,a Matchless Chieftain amp for a few mortgage payments!! Wish I had it back..I've still got my original 67 Fireglo 360/12..No matter what, thats a keeper!! Yes, can hear Hicks pretty well here! Note the Vox Tube Beatle amps!!
This is one of my favorite Hollies songs. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to get too much airplay on oldies radio stations. Brings back terrific memories of the 60's.
I actually had my first make-out with the daughter, Leslie, of my parent’s best friend couple, the McLeods. (We’d known each other since birth, maybe always a mutual crush.) It started with us both saying On A Carousel was our favorite song. Next thing you know, we were smooching. Thank you, the Hollies, for my first kiss!
@@garry9156 For starters, what probably was a 1964-65 Rickenbacker; VOX Amps; Ludwig drum kit help shape the tone of The Hollies sound. Of course, during their heyday, they were seen with a variety of what nowadays are vintage guitars.
@@frommetoyou4401, Rickenbacker and Vox were always out of my price range , the best guitar I ever owned was a Gibson Gospel acoustic and after the 1st year the bridge kept pulling up on it , Gibson didn't honor their lifetime warranty either which really disgusted me about their business , some years later they bought out or partnered with Epiphone , not really sure how that deal with them went .
To be eleven years old and owning this single...wow...in its day this rocked harder than most music. Even more, for it to be a signature song from my first chrush... My compliments to this band, their music has aged so well..

Just an all around kick ass band. Man they were great. What every garage band aspires to, but rarely ever approaches. Easy to see why they were so popular.

This is a case where the song in-person live was just as good, if not better, than the recorded version. They are enjoying themselves too, always a plus. The Hollies had already done the psychedelic thing by this time, and this song is, perhaps, as if early '60s British Invasion rock had just kept on evolving. The harmonies, the guitar riffs, Bernie Calvert's bass, and Bobby Elliot on drums, all flawless, in my opinion

Nash is amazing. I had no idea he had been in The Hollies (all these bands are before my time). My first memory of Graham is from the "Woodstock" film and song of the same name with Crosby, and Stills. An amazing talent-indeed all these guys are truly gifted. Love The Hollies.♥
You can hear and see Graham and Allan passing the lead back and forth for this... it's neat. I don't think I knew Allan ever sang harmony until this video. They all make it look so effortless...
Prof - on the record, Alan and Graham sing the lyrics in tandem, all the way through. On this, they split their vocals into a two-part harmony in places. I think this sounds much better than the recording. I saw the Hollies in '66. I could never have imagined that I would still love their music 50 years later.
Michael Powell Thank you! I don't know enough of music to really understand that... and I don't know all those terms.
