The most fun and enjoyable quilt was my son’s quilt. I allowed my children a “play hooky” day to spend with me. I was sewing on his quilt and he asked if he could do a block. He did very well and we had the most enjoyable day with a fire in fireplace, hot chocolate, and quilting. He told his wife that was his favorite memory. My son is now deceased and I have his quilt still on his bed. 💕❤️💕
My favorite tool is my rotary cutter. When I first started quilting, you traced a template on the back of your fabric and cut it out with scissors. So you cut out each piece separately and it took forever. The rotary cutter made it possible to cut out multiple shapes at one time. It was so much faster to cut out the pieces for a quilt. It was revolutionary!
My favorite tool is definitely the rotary cutter. What a time saver! Back when I took my first quilting class in 1977, there were no specialty templates, rulers, or cutters. In class we were shown how to make templates out of cereal boxes and back them with fine sandpaper so they wouldn’t slip against the fabric. We then traced around the template onto the fabric then used scissors to cut out the quilt pieces, adding seam allowances. We then stitched on the drawn lines either by hand or machine. So tedious and time-consuming but “back in the day, that was the way”!
Fav tools - #1 6 1/2" x 12 1/2" Creative Grid ruler, Wonder Clips are a new fav, and my Clover needle threader. My sister gifted me a handcrafted seam ripper/stiletto combo that I love.
I think my favorite tool is the rotary cutter and the cutting mat. The very first quilt i started was requested by my youngest daughter. She picked out fabric and i started to cut out the pieces for a Rail Fence quilt in purples with scissors. i used a template made from cardboard to cut the pieces. When i went to sew the pieces together nothing matched and the blocks were all different sizes. I threw it all in a box and put it in a corner of my closet. I went and bought my daughter a purple quilt! Years later.....maybe more than 10 i discovered the rotary cutter and the cutting mat. I was able to finish piecing the top. After probably another 10 years I rediscovered this quilt top after a number of moves when i was unpacking boxes. Maybe i will now finish it! I think the rotary cutter and the mat revolutionized quilt making. So much easier to cut multiple layers and much more accurately!
Catching up, I thought. Somehow my RUclips pushed me back 5 months, ironically to my wedding anniversary! I actually ordered that pattern twice in a year, and I don't know where either one of them are now. Maybe I need to organize??? And. I still haven't made it!!! You are loved by so many!!
My favorite quilt was the one I made my first niece. It was a fun & bright play quilt. I used primary colors for large blocks and a cow print for the center. Then on the back was a black fabric with colorful polka dots, very modern and playful. All of my nieces love it. That bird block is great! Def think a yellow border will add that Pop. The Sew Together Bag has been on my wish list for years! Love the idea & design of it. Your friend did a great job! You can tuck a little 6x8-ish mat & ruler under the pockets. Also, open the zip all the way & both ends will lay flat. One side for an ironing pad, one for cutting. Perfect! That book looks fabulous. Will def ask my library to stock it. Love epp & Geo shapes. Finally, that Sashiko fabric looks divine! Can’t wait to see your scarf & napkins. Have a great day. Stay safe. Blessed be.
I am making surgical masks a pattern from Craft passion. I added fusible fleece between the cotton layers and florist wire at the nose piece for a tighter fit . I work at a cancer center and we are short on masks. It is so wonderful to see the community so sewists come together. Thanks for all you do Pat!
Favorite tool is a pair of pink snips that are faster and easier than scissors for separating chain piecing or cutting my “thread catcher” from whatever I’m sewing on.
A fun quilt pattern is the Soduko 9 patch. It uses 9 different batiks cut in 9 5" squares. Then get a Soduko puzzle answer key, assign each of the different batiks a number and use the key to lay them out,, sash and border as desired. I make these as gifts because they are a great conversation piece as well as a great way to use Batik fabric.
My most favorite tool is my Martelli rotary cutter. It has saved my shoulder and wrist. I also love the wonder clips. I have started using them when teaching kids to sew. Some of them are afraid of getting poked by the straight pins and the clips give them more confidence to sew. I also love my hand made wooden seam ripper/stiletto.
My snips is my favorite tool, I keep it on my machine to clip the threads when I chain piece. It's so easy to use, it doesn't have holes like scissors so you can easily pick up and put down quickly.
My favorite tools are the internet , thank you MSQ , Jordon Quilts, Pat Sloan, Utube and my stiletto. I love to see a project on Utube and then put my twist on it. I have learned so much from all more from Utube than I ever did in classes. And then I can use my money to buy products. As I’ve gotten older my stiletto really helps me hold down those small pieces and seams.
I don’t see a way to attach a picture but I can tell you that it does have a wooden handle. I bought it 10 years ago from a local quilt shop and I think it was a clover product. I have a pin cushion on the corner of my sewing cabinet and I keep it there. I really like it.
My favourite tool is probably one of my rotary cutters. It's actually for woodworking - for cutting veneer. It looks like a Klingon weapon - all metsl. Nothing like the usual ones sold for quilters.
My favorite tool is small pair of sewing scissors, Gingher is my favorite. I am also loving the new stash and store from It's Sew Emma. I can store so many things I need right beside my sewing machine in easy reach.
Right now, my favorite tool would be a seam roller. I love using it on small blocks where I don't have to keep jumping up to iron. Thank you Pat. I enjoyed the video. 😊
This reminds me of the older Christmas commercial where the people are pressed up against the retail doors saying "Open, open, open". Haha. 62 more minutes. Time to make dinner and not be late.
A few of my favorite tools: Jack which I use as a seam ripper and as a stiletto, my sewing snips that I keep a pair at each sewing machine, and my Quick Quarters Ruler.
Good evening. Told my husband he could not get on the computer till I was finish with your Fireside Chat. Most of our restaurants are closed and what businesses are open are open from10-6 for outside drive up pickup. We are about to a complete shut down. My favorite tools are the wool mat and a stick to press the seams open. A lady from North C. had one in a retreat so that called for a road trip in to get one before coming back home to Kansas a year ago. Have been making face mask like others today, from my fat quarter, using binding not elastic, they are finding out when they clean them so many time the elastic is wearing out. My son is a Dr. and he called last night and asked if I could make some and ask if my sewing group could help out too. Stay safe and keep on smiling.
I have two favourite tools. I purchased a Large Stripology Ruler for Xmas - wow the most wonderful accurate ruler in my collection. I also love my magnetic pincushion, being arthritic, if I spill pins on the floor I can attach to the bottom of my foot with a rubber band to collect the little blighters. This morning I ordered the lovely patchwork book - pretty and practical. Thanks again for inspiring us Pat.
Thank you for sharing ways to refocus and center ourselves. My mind has been running in all directions. Ready to find my planner and get back to making lists and checking them off!
At this point, I would say a banner quilt that I made for a family reunion for myself and siblings. It was the first one we ever had, and turned out to be the last. My only sister and a brother passed 💔 before we had a second one! Treasure your siblings.
Merry and Bright was my most fun quilt. I had been doing a lot of projects for gifts and this was one I did for myself and loved choosing the Christmas fabrics from my stash.
My favorite tool is the electric seam ripper. Second favorite is metal appliqué templates.....but I cut those myself. Makes perfect appliqué...along with my metal clippers.
My favorite tool is a pop socket like the ones used on cell phones to help hold them but I use it on my most used ruler for cutting and measuring. It is an amazing tool. It helps to grasp the tool with ease and move it around, etc.
My favorite quilt is what I am working on now called Seaside by Tasha Noel with Riley Blake fabrics. It's a panel and then you use 2, 5" charm packs. Thank you for all you do, Pat!
My rotary cutter is my favorite tool. However, I recently made several project bags. I put my pattern, threads, material, and a pair of scissors along with finished blocks in it. I no longer have to search for anything. It"s all in the bag ready to go.
I'm actually making my first quilt. My only other quilting experience was with my old Pokeno group we got together and made quilted Christmas stockings. So much fun
Thank you for the link to Gudrun’s “Elvira” quilt along. It was fun to take part in and I love the finished top. My favorite tool is my 60mm ergonomic Martelli rotary cutter.
My favorite quilt tool , ugh, that is tough!! So many. I know how to piece by hand so it wouldn’t be the sewing machine. I do know how to cut fabric from templates so it wouldn’t be the cutting mat or rotary cutter. I think my Gingher scissors. Unless, needle and thread are considered tools. I am similar to you wherein I have a lot of scissors. lol But, my Gingher Scissors top all out there, for me. Piece, love and blessings to one of the most entertaining, real and helpful teachers out there, xoxo, Vicki
My favorite tool changes depending on what I am making. But overall my rotary cutter is tops. I have the one that closes automatically. I would never remember to keep closing it after each use. My recent favorite is a wool pressing mat. Awesome!!!
Pat you are amazing I love how you think out loud about how your going to do your projects. How your not quite sure how to finish off your quilts and ask for opinions.
I am so glad to hear I wasn't the only one that cut wrong. I am going to repurpose those oops blocks! Had a good time and always love to watch your videos!
My favorite tool is my brass stiletto. It helps me make sure to feed my strips thru to the end. So often I would let the strip finish on its own and guess what the seam allowance was "goofy".
I discovered the Wonder Clips a couple of years ago when I made a bag that had binding on it. They were recommended to use and I couldn't believe how much easier they were to use than pins. I have been using them ever since and love them.
My favorite tool is a small pair of embroidery scissors shaped like a stork. I use them as thread snips and they also work as a seam ripper because the are super sharp! I also occasionally use them like a stiletto - can’t imagine sewing without them.
My favorite tool, and one that I used a lot this past weekend, is my battery operated seam ripper, "the quick ripper." I had to remove a bunch of machine quilting and I'd still be working on it today if it weren't for this handy tool.
One of my favorites are my magnifying lenses that attach to my machine and my big lighted magnifying lamp, especially as I get older and during allergy season like now, which always messes with my sight. I can keep on quilting! LOL.
Aq my favorite tool varies. Jack is my favorite of all time. I have 3. My husbands, my sewing room and my pocket. Lol. Then I have a right side ruler. It helps marking on each side. And then the purple thang . I live your star block. I will be making that one.
Favorite tool is my Shape Cut ruler by June Taylor ..... it makes my cutting so much more efficient and lets me sew more ..... :) loving the month of daily challenges. Thank you
Masks: make ones with a pocket. Insert vacuum cleaner fabric - cut up the bags - and insert. A recent effectiveness graph shows the vacuum bag fabric at a 95% effective rate just under the 97% rate for N95 masks. Most of us have the bags to use.
My favorite tool is a “Tulip “ pin cushion. It has a suction cup on the bottom and sticks to the cover of my machine. I find that having pins right in front of me make them easy to get and stab back in. I used magnetic rounds and have a magnetic bowl as well but the Tulip is cutenesses and functional. 🥰
Most favorite tool has to be my rotary cutter....I used to HATE to cut out cardboard templates and fabric pieces with scissors! When the rotary cutter came out I thought I'd died and gone to quilting heaven! Sorry I can't be more original.... :)

Nancy C Thank you for sharing such a sweet memory ❤️

I have a respirator that I wear to spray baste my quilts. It makes it so much more enjoyable.
Fav tools - #1 6 1/2" x 12 1/2" Creative Grid ruler, Wonder Clips are a new fav, and my Clover needle threader. My sister gifted me a handcrafted seam ripper/stiletto combo that I love.
Thanks to the internet and quilters' tutorials, I am learning how to quilt.

Sorry saw part of Fireside chat as cooking dinner for family birthday dinner (no worries about too many people or close contact)
I did a round robin with my quilt group and we had such a great time.
My combo tool by Alex Anderson. Has a seam ripper at one end with a stiletto at the other. Has a pressing cap on one end too.
Most favorite tool has to be my rotary cutter....I used to HATE to cut out cardboard templates and fabric pieces with scissors! When the rotary cutter came out I thought I'd died and gone to quilting heaven! Sorry I can't be more original.... :)
My needle inserter tool because my automatic needle threader is very finicky.
