James- Thanks for the review. I just bought this bike last week and it was largely based on your review and your FB videos. I have been riding and racing MTBs for 25+ years, but this was my first Fat Bike purchase. Thanks again.
I got the Aluminum version 2 years ago. Leftover stock at one of my local shops. I couldn’t wait 1 year to get the Carbon version. The more recent builds have better part specs now. I had to replace the cheap Tektro brakes and got a PNW Pine dropper post. Thinking about a OneUp bar and stem combo upgrade too! Love riding leaf covered trails with it and my pup too! I fit a 4.8 tire up front but kept the rear at 4.0. Great for when you can’t see the rocks under the leaves!
Grip, Grip, and more Grip! Thanks for sharing your first of many rides!!
Thanks, enjoyed the video. Looks like you had a great ride. I love going out just before sundown. I have a Lynskey Fatskey fat bike and get out alot in the winter.
Soapy dishwashing detergent would have helped w. floor pump. Or seat w. tube then pull tube out. One side is already seated the other side should go w. no problem. I just bought a Van Helga and it worked like a charm.
Challenge is actually how loose the tires are on the rim. They didn't have enough seal to hold the bead on one side. That's where air volume was needed. But good tips and hope you have fun on your van helgas
I picked up my Beargrease last year, absolutely love it. Very nimble and sporty feeling, it’s a fast fat bike. Enjoy your new ride!!!!
Awesome, glad you love your bike. I think I will too!
Welcome to the Beargrease club! Try using a strap of some sort to hold the bead of the tire in place if you need to set up tubeless again
Yeah I tried that with a ratchet strap, but sometimes the frustration vs. 10min drive to the bike shop calculation comes in. :-)
Nice way to spend an evening. Would love to pick one of these up!
You should! It is a fun rig.
I leave the disk, on the rear wheel. Too many times the rear derailleur gets snagged by the spokes on rough trails.
Hi, how do you compare your Trek Farley to the Beargrease? That is what I am pondering right now.
James,
Which did you like better, this Beargrease or the Trek Farley 9.6? I think spec-wise vs. the 2022 Salsa Beargrease C SLX, the Farley 9.6 is a better value, having nicer hubs, a dropper post, and a lifetime warranty on the frame. Riding wise on the trail, which do you like better? I just trashed my beautiful 2017 Beargrease NX1(which I upgraded to XO1 and added a Lauf Carbonara fork) in a bad crash last Thursday, so I'm looking to replace the bike for the Fall.
So luckily I have owned several fatbikes over the years as well such as the Farley 9.6 (2016, but it is the same frame as the current one.) Having also owned a few aluminum Farleys I have a good sense to how they ride. The short of it is, I get roped into the Farley because it has a very good value proposition, but the fit doesn't work for me. On most brands I fit a medium, and on Trek I fit their M/L (18.5"). The Farley is only available in S,M,L, XL and that has never jived perfectly for me.
So on-trail performance I think the Beargrease is the winner. It has a better ride feel to me, fits really well for me (5'8/9 - 30" Inseam) in size medium and handles like a mountain bike on dry. It also is better setup IMO if you plan on adding packs.
The Trek however has the sliding rear dropout and better tire clearance. I think the Farley rides ever so more compliant and smooth. It's downfall is the super short and upright position is not as fun in the dry. Going slow in snow it might be better than the Beargrease. I also find bag and bottle clearance limited because of the super sloped top tube.
Idk if that helps you. Both are good bikes in their own right, but I intend on keeping the Beargrease longer term as personally I have really jived with that bike.
Just picked up a 2022 Farley 5. It’s only Alloy but it’s a great fat bike.
Very nice. Love the color combo and the fade on the frame and fork.
Thanks, and agreed. The color is a nice bonus.
Still have ? Thoughts of a fat bike v a regular HT ?
How would you compare against the Trek Farley?
Sweet bike! I’m looking to pick one up this week. I’m 5’10” 30 in seam and Salsa says I should be on a Medium. Based on your assessment, Large seems to be the better choice for me - would you say so?
Def agree about the dropper. I’m very hesitant about the Tektro brakes and have been shopping around for other fat bikes like Borealis etc. how have they held up over the past year for you? Thanks for you time. 🤘
Jim W- I am 5' 10" and just bought the large last week. The frame sticker on the L says for riders 6' - 6 3", but that is absolutely wrong. The Large fits me perfectly. Also, the Salsa site says the M has 170mm cranks. Not sure if that is accurate or not, but I don't want 170mm cranks. Go with the L, you won't be disappointed.
I am also a 30" inseam.
That's pretty cool 😎 your facial expressions show all the excitement ya need to know. Enjoy!!
Thanks, its a fun bike!
Glad you got the bike up and running. I'm not sure if I'll get another fat bike. I enjoyed my last one but sold it. Just not sure I'd really get that much use out of it. Maybe I'll just borrow yours 👍😃👍
Any time brother
Ha! Fat chance.
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thanks man!!!!
Got a new Farley 7 a month ago today and a new Giant Roam3 2 weeks ago been a good month or a good early Christmas
Congrats ma man, nice!
How much does it weigh ?
Awesome video!
Always impressed when I see guys riding fat bikes in gravel races. I have never ridden a fat bike do you notice an increased effort required when riding to maintain speed, or when climbing?
I have a mukluk and it has 26x4.6 tires its mostly climbs and getting it started for me but once its going seems to hold alot of momentum.
Very cool. Looked like fun. Kinda surprised you don't have a small compressor with all the bikes you play with. Maybe ask Santa 😉
Well... I do but yours truly lost the darn air chuck to be able to use it on a presta valve.
Did you try removing the inside piece of your valve stem and inflate with no fluid to set your beads first? Often works with a decent pump. I hope your views and subscribers allow you to grab a compressor pretty soon! Thanks for the video! Enjoyed.
Oh definitely, removing the valve core is crucial to getting the tire to seat. If that bike tires just are so loose on the rim that I needed a heck of a lot more air volume than I was able to pump out.
Looks great on its natural environment...
PNW loam dropper, with a review would be great! Considering getting one to replace the crappy e13 dropper on my Jeffsy.
Love that idea, I have been wanting to try their stuff.
Love the beargrease !
It's an absolutely fantastic bike. I really enjoy it
wait are these trail in Ma and if they are have u ever bean to pine hills
That is down in Plymouth right? If so I don't really get down that way very much. Google shows it's probably a nice place to ride though.
Pine hills is the best
I ordered the Farley 9.6 and it will be available just after Christmas! I am going to ride a Farley 5 that they rent from the shop. I too am right at size of either a medium or large.
Congratulations I hope you enjoy your Farley when it arrives
I think your going to love that 9.6 for it speed and climbing. Especially if your on the Farley 5
I love mine I got about month ago
Still need to play around with the air pressure in tires for going over roots and stuff
I think my tire pressure is at 11 lbs now. But that all depends on your weight
Good luck with your new bike.
So my buddy has the 2021 large 9.6 and we traded back and forth and he is in far better shape than me, but when I was on his 9.6 I left him in the (snow) dust. 😂 I am happy that I am going with the large 9.6. It just feels like a better ride than the medium. Thank you both for your comments and insights.
Enjoyed the video. Thinking about getting a fat tire bike to keep me riding through the snowy Ohio Winter. How does it climb?
Climbs pretty well, with those big fat tires you have no excuses
That’s sweet
Can you get a 4.5 tire on a Beargrease? I know the Farley has enough clearance.
Not on the 27.5" wheels. But it does allow with 26" Wheels. The Farley had the sliding drop outs to allow for additional options.
@@Jamesthebikeguy You can put 4.5" wide tires on the front. I just bought the exact same bike with a small frame and changed to studded 45NRTH Dillinger tires. Could only fit 4" wide on the rear.
I also had a dropper post installed. Definitely need it in the snow!
How is it, compared to the Farley? 😀
I like the fit better, the reach is more comfortable. I've had a few Farley's and each one I needed to adjust the fit. This out of the box is better. I do however feel like the carbon Farley's finish quality was better. Something about this feels just a touch cheaper. But then again its way less money so that makes sense.
It’s a nice looking bike. I do have one request though. It would be awesome if you could convert your measurements into metric for us international viewers. Maybe just some small text over the video.
What measurements in this one needs to be converted? The wheelsize/tires I believe are internationally listed in Inches. Other videos I do list metric if I use inches on something that is not internationally used.
Why did you sell your Farley?
Cause of the Pandemic. Sold it right as things were going south and my employment was unknown. Needed to get some additional reserves ya know.
Gonna put a dropper on it down the road?
Yes for sure
Hey now you’re calling it a dork disk!
Now? Pie Plate, Dork Disc, Fred Frisbee, lots of fun names for a spoke protector. They are required when selling a bike, but not to ride a bike.
On my Trek 2021 Roscoe 6 I have Bontrager LineComp 40 wheels and Bontrager XR4 27.5 x 2.8, which makes these tires look very similar to “Fat Tires”…. Love the look and traction.. Great Video (as always).. 🇺🇸
Thank you and happy riding!
I love my Fatboy
I always watch your video
Thank you, Thank you!
Nice
You need a bike light ;)
Got a few, just didn't expect the day to go as long as it did
