- Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia invited us to take another look at Tekken 8 just ahead of its January 26, 2024 release date.
In this video, we're giving you a look at the Player and Character Customization feature that the game has to offer, including the many options that can be used to personalize your experience.
This footage was our personal gameplay captured on a PS5 and was slightly color-corrected.
Tekken 8 is scheduled to release on January 26, 2024, for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.

People complaining about customisation as if it isn’t 1000x better than Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. I don’t see why the tekken team would spend too much resources on an element of the game where they are clearly the best in the genre (not including Soulcalibur which was basically its entire selling point and it’s kinda dead anyway), even if it’s not as good as it was in tekken tag 2.
I love Tekken 8 too, but how about we wait for it to actually drop before we call it 1000x better than all other fighting games, aiit?
MK is a braindead win for T8, true. So are multiple other fighters I can't remember right now.
BUT. Street Fighter 6, naaaah we hold up. I'll need to try it out for at least a month before I decide whether or not it's better than what is so far the greatest fighting game of our timeline.

Tekken 7 had disappointing customisation compared to only other tekken games, but name me ONE other popular and alive fighting game (other than Soul Calibur) at the time that had better customisation than Tekken 7 which we all dunked on for having bad customisation.
Guilty Gear and dragon ball fighterz just has palette swaps, iirc Mortal Kombat just had random full body skins that you couldn’t even change colour, SFV just had set costumes in alternate colours or something, etc.
So yeah I always think Tekken fans are spoilt when it comes to customisation, they don’t even have to offer it because it’s not even a genre standard, yet when they do add it in it just gets criticised for not being as good as it was on ps3 with way less detailed models, lighting and physics.

I was sold immediately after seeing she got full hoodie option. This is sick :D And Hakama is also amazing. Looks like they're nailing everything in this game!!!
They sold us a game mode and frame data in Tekken 7. They went worse than EA right there with that shit something other fighters have never done. Past Tekkens like Tekken 6 and Tekken Tag 2 had way more and better customization options than even this modern iteration. So they haven't nailed it until we see the final product out to the people and we see if they cheap shot us all again with having to pay for modes to play on our fullpriced game or lock the basic frame data all fighters do free in their games. Or if the game will lack content like T7 did on release thus why having to pay for a game mode made it even worse.

Everything is on board since day 1 and for free, frame data, tutorials, HUGE guide sections built in practice mode, massive single player mode, tekken ball etc. Bringing up T7 feels like a really desperate move mate. If you don't like the game keep playing your Street Fighter with paid DLC for costumes and shitty roster. @@bandarsalh1338 WB? Recently they just dropkicked everything that EA did in previous years. In terms of DLC no one got even close to Tecmo with their DLC strategy for Dead of Alive 5 and 6.

@@CrimRui Listen, I deadass took 1 look at all the ill-fitted clothing options they offered and was like “…I-I guess the default outfits ain’t so bad. 🥲” lmaoo.
They just copied and pasted the clothes onto multiple characters. It's also a reason that characters like Law and Hwoarang were so bulky, so they could have similar proportions to other male characters and they didn't have to alter the customization assets. Even though there are fewer options, this game's customization looks so much better.

So basically the default clothes of each character became an Entire Body. That means we can't use parts of those clothes separately the way we want. This customization system is trash.
Yea that's a huge shame. SC6 remains the peak customization
But bro look at the freakin quality.. its insane and everything looks like it fits the charater perfectly
which only makes all the more odd that it's restricted like that, If the customization are made to fit each character more, that should've meant that they'd be more compatible with swapping out bits of the characters' default outfits. The customization looks really good already, but I'm hoping that maybe you can unlock a few more items through the arcade quest or something, that would me awesome.
Also, there's definitely more on dlc later (characters, costumes, etc)
The fact that you could unlock so many new styles in past games was SUCH a great incentive to grind for it. I’m specifically thinking about the way Tekken 6 did everything with theirs.
We saw in some earlier footage that you can unlock customisation from arcade quest, via the treasure chest battles

Honestly, I think my favorite look from all of these is just her with the jacket off. She already has a very minimal design and I think she just looks really cool sans the jacket. If her chest covering was purple with the black underpart staying the same then it'd actually be perfect.

Hair customization is a disappointment again. They just copy and paste T7’s custom. We were waiting it like TTT2 and T6 hair styles.
Agree :( even t6 hair custom is way better! More options! Pigtails ponytails etc you can choose the bangs too

Tekken Dark Resurrection on PSP and PS3 had superb customization options. PS3 doesn't have an interface for it tho! I used to just copy my PSP custom designs to my PS3 version manually.

Can't mix and match upper/lower parts of default costumes anymore, but there's a separate footwear option and the clothes look closer to actually fitting the character. There's always one step back with bamco, but 2 forward one back is still progress I suppose.
It's mostly likely because a lot of the costumes are much more intricate and connected than the T7 ones.
Good that it’s a step up from 7 but still not as good or intricate as 6’s customization

To be fair the graphical fidelity is something head and shoulders above any tekken game before, and making all those clothing options actually FIT right and react to light and motion/wind fx for EACH character...is one hell of alot of work. That being said I still hope they release customization updates in the future. I'd be happy with that.
Tekken 6 and Tag 2 continue to have the best customization.
Don’t lie to yourself. Tekken 6 had potential but it fell short and Tekken tag is just a slightly better version of Tekken 7’s customization. The only thing those two games did better were the hair/head options and even those weren’t too good

@@SalsburyAsmr tekken 6 was the pinnacle of customization in tekken and it still hasn’t been as good as it since. T8 is maybe the closest but it’s still lacking compared to 6 where you can literally do almost anything. Want to customize a default top with fitted jeans and no shoes? You can, want to have the default outfit without shoes? You can. In t8 you can’t, it switches to the generic clothing items, so yes t6 is still superior.

Also, gotta love the smooth Jazz soundtrack while customising your character. I'm going to enjoy making my characters look good while sipping a cup of coffee.
This is just T7 customization with an update…and thats NOT a compliment. C+
I really thought the ugly T7 hairstyles were going to be left behind in T7 for new updated looks lol. I guess the days of creating our own hairstyles are really gone too.
Hopefully there's more when the game officially releases.

I think more customization options will come later as the game continue to live on, such as DLCs like it was in tekken 7, or new stuff from treasure battles

Man this honestly seems like barely an upgrade from Tekken 7. I was hoping they would go back to Tag 2 which had ridiculous amount of options (or even Soul Calibur with their crazy customization) like hair parts and way more body to customize and more combinations instead of conflicting parts.

I don't mind if the customization is like this tbh... its already better than T7, and customization stuff is something they can add more content through seasons and DLC's within the game lifespam. I know it's not the ideal scenario but I'm fine with it, the game already looks like a miliion bucks in terms of graphics, gameplay and everything, so yea, I really don't mind if the customization is not all that we we're expecting (don't know if you agree)

Have you seen the value of Tekken 8 compared to previous Tekkens? You can argue T6 and Tag 2 had superior customisation but look at everything else in the game. Tekken 8 is objectively the most value for money in the franchise yet at launch, not years into it's lifespan. Let's not mention the current main competitors SF6 and MK1. Tekken 8 value for money is insane compared to these games if you wish to customise your character. @@skimrizzle9598

Your sunset is unbeatable.
You might even be able to change the music with the Jukebox, we'll see. You can change it for character select and stages so maybe even for the customisation screen. That said it's still nice music.

Some more options but still extremely limited like T7. We cannot change T shirts and jackets and gloves separately. we cannot combine default outfit with custom clothing

Tekken 8 is really just “Super Tekken 7: Turbo”
Being able to change the background was the cherry on top for me. The hair options looks a bit trimmed down from T7 - pun intended - right now, but I'm sure things will get added later. The fact that there's already this much variety, and that it looks REALLY good, makes me very happy.

I was really hoping for a return to form. Tekken 6 customization is still by far the best in the franchise. Oh well, at least it's better than Tekken 7's.

i assume the reason behind this is that they didnt release it for arcade first like in previous titles they had time to port the game to consoles/pc and add the customization.. but this one getting released without an arcade version pretty much explains it, despite them having a better budget this time you can see where all that went.

I had hoped and prayed they'd get someone to redo their customization assets. Why is it so hard to get GTA or Cyberpunk style character customization assets in fighters? So far Street Fighters create a character customization is winning.
And also for the record Virtua Fighter still to date has the BEST customisation options for characters. Theirs was unique, detailed to each character, with numerous hair types, skins, accessories, etc all centered around the character and their own style, story, history, etc.

GTA just has a lot of options and the reason fighting games don't give you thousands of options like GTA is because the main focus is only fighting. GTA has all those customizations for it's large amount of things to do

Tekken 6 has the Best Character Customization in Tekken and Tag 2 has Decals.
Hoping they add socks option where you can wear when wearing shorts instead of the socks/shoes already. Tekken 6 and tag 2 had the best customization since every character clothing was unique. Tekken 7 was just bloated with all characters except guests could wear almost everything.
The real crowd are gonna play on PC for the mods anyway.

Another complete let down imo, copy paste from T7 TTT2 looking at it, no fleshed out options creative new flairs etc, just copy pasted into UE5.
Complete dissapointment.... they put more effort into panels and banners than actual customisation.
With the revenue they made from 7 and the 11 Million copies or more sold going into this - Pathetic.
This only follows the trend of making characters look like they're going to a mall. I don't want a bunch of casual outfits for these characters, I want costumes that actually fit a fighting game. Tekken 6 used to give us plenty of specific fits for each character, and even the casual fits were a lot more fleshed out and in context for the characters. I'm glad I wasn't expecting anything different, so I'm not that disappointed.
those...are still there? Have you seen the alt skins? They all look amazing. This is customization, so ofcourse its a lot more individuality based. Also, you're definitely looking at T6 through rose colored glasses. The customization was better for sure, but in terms of content it wasn't all that much greater than what T7 got save some more "inner" options.
Not to mention that its still pretty likely a lot of items are locked behind other modes like in every previous game (including T6)

Mr Harada did a wonderful job for Tekken game for this new generation.
I really hope that they will work further on options since so far there's way too little of unique suits per character and barely any hair and portraits for them

I hope they add more too but Tekken fans should be very grateful with what we get at launch and the fact we unlock customisation options through playing and not real money. The other huge fighting games aka SF6 and MK1 aren't even close when it comes to value for money in comparison to Tekken 8. Lets be grateful to Bandai Namco for not doing what every other company has done, charge insane prices for a single costume and make everything unlockable cost money.

I absolutely love it the eyes customization, with the new graphics looks incredible, I really don't care if there's just a few good options because I like to use the default look or from previous game, Reina is already my favorite.

So you can't change or edit the main costumes of the characters like for Reina here you just can't change the shoes only on her main costume?

No the main costumes work the same way that a full body outfits worked in tekken 7, you can't have a main outfit top and custom bottoms

And what's worse is that there are 4 sections of clothing for different body parts by name only but they all affect the entire body of the character, that is just misleading.

The "armored hakama" and face mask really look good on Reina with her fighting style, but she has many more options that don´t look like anything a Mishima would wear.
She might be Tekken´s Jack-O.
Pros
The new title, plate, and health bar options look pretty good(the addition of plates that have certain characters signature moves is a very nice touch)
Character creation is more detailed giving you the choice to change specific parts of a character you couldn't before in 7
The UI of the character creation is more streamlined and organized
Full face option has cool helmets to use
Wide variety of glasses' options
Plentiful hit effects
Neutral
Some of the player customization is a bit samey from the last game
The cheeks are only adding blush, can't think of what else you could add to the options that are already given
Tan option is the same as Tekken 7, I think they should have added a slider or something to change the degree of tan you want
The head options are decent but I think there could have been more offered. There's a weird mix of realistic and extremely outlandish(bread head and cone) that seems out of place.
The Kijin face guard as a unique option is cool but I kinda feel like each character should have more options if this is a section to customize(I'm sure some characters might have more in this section that others)
Only being able to select 2 accessories seems kinda limiting
The base aura options are more than what Tekken 7 offered from the beginning however, I still don't understand why the fiery and extreme auras are locked to the arms and legs with no body option
Giving the character a t-pose to shoot them in and their fighting pose is good but, I feel like there should be more generic pose options to vary it up

Still a glaring lack of varied hairstyles
You can change the eye types by you can't give them a custom
For the eye makeup, lip color, and face paint options there's only a few of them and you can't give them custom colors outside of what's offered
"Entire Body" section doesn't have anything in it outside of the alts. No generic full body outfits or dresses.
Its possible that they're gonna trinkle in DLC for customization options like in 7
Upper Body and Lower Body options seem to be relatively the same kind of options we had in 7. Its lacking some unique options as well as standard stuff such as hoodies or leggings while we have 14 different skirt options that aren't that varied
Of the accessories you can choose the options seem kinda the same as 7 and sort of generic
My Verdict: After breaking it down there's some good here for sure but I'm only truly seeing a half-hearted job here done to make people happy about the customization they're offering for this game. There's too much "let's add this" but not fleshing out the new additions with any details going on to make them that good or that much better than past games. Disappointed with the direction they've gone because it feels like they only marginally built on top of 7's customization.

well sf6 customization is better as you can make your own characters. They need to give us soul calibur customization levels as this looks the same as T7 customization tbh :/

Seriously, every fighting game has downgraded somehow in terms of customization. Tekken is resting on their laurels again and focusing way more on the competitive scene to "carry" them. I just hope the single player options are anywhere as good as the past Tekken games.
The Customizations in both of these games are perfectly fine. Also in T8 there are 4 clothing sections that say that they are for different body parts but all of them are set for the whole body, that's not exactly a good look for a customization mode.
I stopped playing tekken at 6, and quite honestly while Im glad they at least seem to be keeping a high standard when it comes to the gameplay I cant bring myself to buy a game from a company that has gutted content from previous entries and sold it later. In tekken 6 like half of the legacy roster was DLC, and they also did that with soul calibur as well.
Man, this customization blows. You even showed us (visually) the best character in the game and it was still garbage. Is it really so hard to just dump a f$&@ ton of assets into this game? There are only 2 body types (+ Jack / Bears). Seriously. It's 2024 and they still give us this level of half-@$$ options.
Get Soulcaliber-tier customization or get out. Also just because the other big fighter suck too doesn't mean Tekken has to as well. Be better. Like what Baldur's Gate did to the rest of gaming.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it's disappointing but imma still use it and we still got the default skins so if you don't care you customizing then just use those
There's still some generic, clearly universal customization options from T7 in T8 but i'm really glad they put in alot more effort into character specific customization like they did in T6. Can't waint to see the customization for more characters!
