IT crowd inspired The Big Bang Theory and it's so interesting to see the main difference: The US show needs humanity and redemption in the end, as well as a real world anchor in Penny to show you what a normal person looks like in compaison. The brits don't care, it's way funnier if the "normal person" turns out as weird as everbody else, and all of them stay weird until the end.
I absolutely loved her as the quirky, hippie-like receptionist on DOC MARTIN. It's funny because Chris O'Dowd was great as a guest star on a two-part Christmas episode too.
I love the sign off to the letter --- You affectionate father __ Mr Reynholm. I am waiting for my kids to grow up so I can use that. Probably have to change the name though or they won't know what is going on.
My favorite part of this reaction is definitely 07:36 : Reynholm's letter: "I did plan on using this gun to shoot myself if it ever came to that, but as you know I ended up jumping out of a window." Neil: nodding along, visibly thinking "Yeah, that's what did happen" Neil, 1 second later: Wait, what?!? 🤣
I considere myself a feminist and I like how Douglas is written, he is a bad person doing bad things, sometime sitcom from that time made good people doing the same.
You are not meant to like Douglas - he's an appalling character who does appalling things, much like his father. I mean he's destined to spend eternity in hell with the likes of Hitler. It's a mystery to me why somehow his appalling behavior is seen by some as the series saying this is a good thing and complaining about it. Maybe bad characters don't feature in US and other countries comedies much, prehaps actors from those countries don't want to do those roles, which is why British actors get all the bad roles in American films.
I just saw that the first episode, the celebrity special, dropped into my RUclips feed! I'd love to react to it right away, but I may have to wait until a couple of my live shows (Rings of Power, House of the Dragon) finish up. I'll keep an eye out for how much buzz it's getting too, but it was so much fun last year!
@Neil Talks Matt Berry just finished 3rd season of Toast of London, fabulous, absurd humor about an unlucky/bad actor getting shitty jobs. Similar to his boss character here but nicer.
Douglas will likely grow on you by the end of the series .. he’s as enjoyable to watch as the 3 main characters.. he is a horrible human being but he’s also completely dim witted and stupid with a few redeeming moments so you sort of forgive him a bit…
Douglas is perfect just as he is. Wonderfully irredeemable. Politically correct characters are also good - they bring the element of utopian delusion for us to laugh at.
I enjoy most of this series, but I do find some of it unfunny and sometimes offensive. And to you people who will call me 'woke' or whatever, or say that comedy shouldn't have limits, come off it. Everybody has things they find offensive, it is human nature. I don't think Douglas really adds anything to the show for me, and I do love Matt Berry in What We Do In The Shadows, for example.
You get so used to totally dysfunctional people in this when someone like the accountant turns up it makes them all seem that little bit madder . It's a great way to spend half an hour .
I don't get it when people don't think Douglas is funny. He is by far the most entertaining character of the show. I man, neither Roy nor Jen are all that likable. That's not really the point of the show. It's their antics that are funny, and Douglas is all antics.
To be fair Neil, you do keep an open mind, and it's only on this re-watch have I come to see the problems with Douglas' character. He does have some moments, and obviously it's a cartoon representation we aren't to take seriously, but seeing it from someone else's point of view seeing this for the first time has made me re-evaluate it
it would be actually a nice "special" of characters you really can't stand and why (my all time "favourites" are: the girlfrend of Dexter - Rita, and very similar type, the girlfriend of Nate from Six Feet Under - Lisa; and also the mother of Saga from Broen... I think I would be more willing to accept to my life a serial killer than any one of these :D )
I don't think Douglas is that funny either. It has nothing to do with him being vile or cringe. I enjoy a lot of awful characters, like on It's Always Sunny, but Douglas is just too loudly & flatly one note for me. My favorite episode this season is 'Are We Not Men?'... laughed so, so much. That there was zero Douglas in it... is not a coincidence. Not enjoying Douglas is as valid a view as enjoying him. It's all subjective.
There's a few good episodes coming up, especially the Countdown one, but also one with Douglas that's pretty transphobic, which unfortunately isn't much of a surprise coming rom Graham Linehan. Most of the show holds up really well, so its always a bit jarring when jokes/episodes have aged poorly, but luckily they're few and far between.

If you don't like Douglas then the writing team and the actor himself achieved their goal at portraying a right bastard lol
There’s a difference between thinking someone is a bastard and just not really finding them funny.
@@jspettifer yep. In this guy's case he's already stated his pc views which effects what he considers funny.
Katherine Parkinson is a very good actress. She's in the first ep of Inside No. 9, a very good BBC dark anthology series which combines genres.
She was excellent in Humans (TV series). Though cancelled too soon, it's worth a watch imho.
@@wickedymike She's also great in Spreadsheet.

That's Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. Awesome actors.
His father did write the letter. The contradiction that he must have written it before he spontaneously jumped out the window IS the joke.
The way Moss just runs at them all yelling "I've got a gun! I've got a ruddy GUN!" always kills me. 🤣
The middle of the Venn diagram says, "Music I Used To Like."

13:26 - In Peep Show, Mark does likewise - but instead uses a metal bar.

There are many UK documentaries with From Hell in the title. Builders from Hell, Bosses from Hell, Holidays from Hell etc.
Matt Berry is a comedy genius. I'd say he's at his best in Toast of London, but he's great in several shows.
Great in House of Fools too.
Matt Berry as Todd Rivers as Dr. Lucien Sanchez in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a televisual tour de force.
What we do in the shadows is probably my favourite (next to the IT crowd)
@@EmperorSmithit's all voodoo nonsense as far as this cat's concerned.
Hello Andrew, can you hear me ?
I considere myself a feminist and I like how Douglas is written, he is a bad person doing bad things, sometime sitcom from that time made good people doing the same.
"It's too real Roy, it's too real!" lmao
Notice when Douglas checked the gun to see if it was loaded, he pulled 5 times. If he did it one more, he would have died.
The new boss does grow on you
For comedic effect I think denholm was clairvoyant, given his predictions or he just wrote a lot of notes.
I'm powerfully envious of Maurice Moss's Frederick Douglass hair. It's not stupid, you bullies; it's glorious! :)
I’ve got a ruddy gun!! 😂
"Your affectionate father, Mr Renholm".....Yeh he definitely wrote that 👀🤷♂️😂😂
Good to see Chris Morris back.
And I'm fully with you on the Moss and Roy scenes....👌😂😂😂💜
"Music I used to like"
Great stuff, keep that mind open lol
Roy has te best tshirts

I don't think I've ever seen someone who has more of a messiah complex
I really can't get my head around your problem with Douglas, he's a brillianty written fictional character in a tv comedy series for gods sake!!
It really makes no sense to me why he's got such an issue with Douglas, it's like he's expecting him to be a regular person
Like many UK sitcoms, The IT Crowd includes farce, slapstick, cringe comedy & sex comedy.
NEIL, did you notice "I Literally Just Told You" just came back?

The Speech is one of the best eps. Both the Jen storyline & the Douglas-April one are very good.
