If the lock bar tool doesn't remove easily, take it back out and look on the bottom right of the unit. There is a pin that should be in the recessed position. I had take mine back out, push that pin back into place and the bar removed easily. That warning should be added to the instruction video.

Yeah, the instructions didn’t mention this pin, and I pulled it like in the video. Now the bottom of that piece is cracked.
Success! I skipped using The Lock Bar despite getting one quickly from GE. If you don’t know about it and want to reverse the door later, you won’t find it because the installer will haul it away upon delivery. Before indulging, I checked uniformity with all fasteners. They checked. The only problem I encountered was how fast tight the wire connectors were. Not easy to pull, I used pliers which nearly broke one.
Once everything was tight, I started a small load. Yep, the lock buzzer sounded, so I hit Pause then Start. Nope. I turned the washer Off and repeated. This time the door locked as usual. The best part? NO LEAKS.
Now I have BOTH units swinging open in the way we planned.
One Thing: I suspect reversing doors on washers is best done when the purchase is fresh; wait, and the gasket may not be forgiving.

Door Lock Bar Got Stuck! I had the same issue that alot of you had with the lock bar getting stuck. Ours ended up breaking off inside and after hours and hours of prying we were finally able to get the plastic piece out. However I think me mangled the mechanism inside and the door wouldnt close properly after. This was a brand new machine that we had just gotten 2 weeks prior, so I called GE customer service who put my service request through to a local service center. When I didn't receive a call from the local service center I called them myself only to be told that it would be atleast 2 months before someone could come service my machine. Not only that, but by the time they come to take a look at it they would still have to order in the part and then schedule another service call. I found the part online (door lock) and purchased it (cost almost $100), after 2 weeks it came in and we installed it on our machine (works great now). I am upset because we followed the instructions to a "T" and all it says is to pull out the lock bar. I am hoping GE will reach out and come good for the cost of this part; there is no way I could have been without my washer for months until service could arrive. GE please update your instructions to save others from this situation happening to them!
I posted about this issue 2 years ago. GE won't update the video with correct instructions.
A number of people in the comments have mentioned their Lockbar getting stuck. I just did mine tonight, used the Lockbar, and pulled it out no problem by pulling straight back, as in the video. I will note, I played the video at 25% speed at that part, to make sure I was inserting the Lockbar right-side up and not upside down. I probably played that part back three times @ 25% speed, and in full screen.
There were a couple other spots where I had to go 25% speed and repeat a few times. I often wanted to see the exact way they pushed or pulled something. Definitely made the job easier.
The only thing I found incorrect in the video, is where it mentions to not tighten the screws on the striker. The GE manual does not mention this, and I found that it's (nearly) impossible to tighten them to a point where the striker plate won't move. When you tighten them all the way down, the striker plate is still designed to slide around. I at first left them pretty loose, per the video, but I could just imagine them jiggling free one day and falling out, with washer chaos to follow. Tighten them down and just make sure the striker still has some play to move left/right.

For anyone getting the 'Door" error after reversing make sure you flip the wires on the side you are moving it to. I went through removing and re-attaching the door and all associated hardware probably 2 or 3 times and kept getting that door error before finally realizing that the sensor on the opposite side was wired brown on top red on bottom and my side was red on top brown on bottom. Flipping the wire on the side I was moving it to did the trick. Why on god's green earth they couldnt have just wired both sensors in the same direction is beyond me. Or at a minimum call this out in the directions at LEAST. Strike one GE!

I switched my door today, and was ready to heed your words due to your comment, but GE may have already heard what you and others have said and switched the design as when I got to that part there was only one way the wires would plug in. Finished assembling, ran the machine, and all is well. :)

I had no problem doing this without the lock bar. I just used my hands, and made sure i didnt let it fall inside the unit.

Welp I did not read the comments before trying to pull the stuck lock bar out. Now it is broken inside the lock and I can’t seem to get it to unlock no matter what I do. Would have been a very helpful to mention in the video about having issues with the lock bar being stuck.

My lock bar broke inside the door latch. I called your customer support number and they said it is not covered under warranty. I haven't even washed the first article of clothing and now this thing is broke. I followed this video and even paused the video after EACH STEP! Could someone message me about this? I don't think it's right to have to pay a $100 service call on something that broke while following YOUR instructions. Thanks.
Scam artists, all appliance brands are shit honestly, all of them are so cheaply made but sold at an insane rate.
You should really update the part about the lock bar. Having seen so many people with the issue, it almost seems you want it to break so that you can get more money from them.
Yeah I did mine and the part that latches the door with the spring mechanism in it broke had to spend nearly $50 to order another one

Unable to close door after switching sides, feels like there is something in the way (and visibly can see a white plastic piece that would block the metal part from completely going in the locking mechanism on the unit.

Dear GE, thank you for making a front-load washer with a reversible door, and for providing this video. I do have a question, however. The washer is easily reversed using only the lock bar and a phillips screw driver. Why make the dryer use 2 torx screws, 2 nut screws, and the rest phillips? Would be nice to keep everything consistent, especially when the dryer doors are reversed much more often than washers. Just a thought from someone working for a self-servicing GE dealer. Would help out my warehouse personnel.

The instructions were great. But I couldn't find my lock bar. So I proceeded and switched the locking mechanism to the other side anyhow without using the lock bar. Now the locking mechanism is locked - ie. I can't close the door...any suggestions?

Can someone advise on where this lock bar tool is located or can be found? The installer did not leave me a lock bar for the GFW850 washer that was installed, and was not in the bag which the manual and the registration card came with.
It should be in that bag. the installer probably put it un his pocket by mistake.

I couldn’t find the lock bar. Where is it?
Anyone know how to fix the ultrafresh vent function? Had techs out 4 times and they replaced the fan and the control board. Still not working. The fan and the damper seem to work during solo tests but not during the vent cycle.. it's been almost a year dealing with "techs"..

So the little white housing sensor that comes out of the left side, was I supposed to put that back in on the other side before putting the hing back on ? In the video if you pause at 2:51 the white housing peice is not in there, then when the video continues it just magically appears back in there but didn’t include that in the step, I tried to plug it in but the wiring did not want to fit. Machine is running without error code not in it curently

I did all the steps, the only one I am not sure about is if I tightened the striker too much. First time running it after reversing door swing I think I got a door lock error? After starting the cycle it went through the sensing step and before it started the actual washing part it stopped flashed "door lock" (where the word lock was just a picture of a lock) and just stayed that way until I paused and un-paused. After I un-paused it, I heard it click to lock. Now seems to be running fine but I am now paranoid. Is this normal or did I make a mistake? How loose is the striker supposed to be?

The washer door will automatically lock when the unit has been started.
If the washer is running, press the START/PAUSE button once it will pause the washer and unlock the door. It will take a few seconds for the door to unlock after pressing PAUSE. Press again to restart the wash cycle.
In some cycles the washer will drain first, and then unlock the door when it is paused. The washer performs automatic system checks after pressing the START button. Water will flow in 45 seconds or less. The door may lock and unlock before water flows; this is normal.
Do not try to force the door open when locked (LOCKED indicator ON). This could result in damage to the washer.

As others have noted DO NOT USE THE LOCKBAR. It will easily break off inside when you attempt to remove it. Just happened to me. When it breaks off, it damages the locking assembly and the door will not shut. Just had to buy a new assembly from GE, because they have so far refused to put a warning on the video above as several have asked here. On hold with GE Consumer Relations regarding this to ask them to refund the purchase cost.

should the holes on the opposite side (which held the latch) already be threaded ? Mine are not, and I don't want to ruin the screws/door.

@@jimostrosky6571 I just reversed the door using phillips screwdriver as I did not have a powerdrill. My bad. I could not get the screws in the new holes by hand so off came the door whilst I made sure the screws could go into the threaded holes all the way. After that, the door went back and with some effort, got the six screws in tight. Why it was off a bit, I don't know.

Just had my lock bar tool break off too. Spent an hour trying to get the piece of plastic out of the locking assembly. I got it, but the assembly must have broken from the lock bar tool as the door won’t close now. Very disappointed in GE for this video not addressing that fatal flow as others have pointed out. Same is true in the printed directions in the manual that came with the unit.

HELP! I switched to door just like the video instructed it was very simple but when i went to run it the machine beeped and the word "door" flashed across the screen. Now the machine will not work. Is there something i didn't do like reset the machine or something. I took it back apart and resecured everything, rewatched the video and at no point have I done anything different. Am i missing something?

We watch the video several times. When we turn the washer on it says door and now will not run the washer. We unscrewed everything checked the video we did the connections step-by-step about five times it’s still flashes door. What should we do now? I never received that lock bar with a new washer and a new dryer. I think the store stole them for their service techs. It cost me over $25 to buy one. When I got to the actual work, there were all sorts of problems. For one, the hinge mount would not fit flat on the washer body. I found 2 alignment pins on the back that did not line up with the holes in the washer body. Had to remove them. It was not a pleasant experience. Looking at my dryer, the hardware looks entirely different for the door. I'm not going to mess with it.

I got my washer and dryer from Home Depot we ask both door change but they didn’t do it and when we call they said they can’t do it for the washer. After having a really bad experience with the delivery guys and now this and still waiting for the plumber that they promise to send who knows when .

Also I put a complaint in our local Home Depot about the awful delivery guys and awful experience we had. Hopefully you guys can do something about it is not professional what they did in our house .

The new washer that matches this is one of the only washers available that is capable of reversing the door. The video looks great. Problem I have is that a lock bar was not provided with my machine. It is shown in the owvers manual. Should this be provided with the machine? I would think so, perhaps it was an over site . . . How do I go about having one sent?

@@geappliances - As so many in this thread have commented, removing the lock pin from the lock mechanism/assembly has resulted in a little white piece of plastic breaking off and getting stuck inside the lock mechanism. I cannot dislodge it, and thus the door will not close rendering the entire washer useless. Now, I need to find a replacement lock assembly. If you really want to help, send me a new lock assembly. This whole experience has left a very sour taste in my mouth towards GE. I’m extremely frustrated and fed up with not being able to do laundry in my home.
Everything was great until my lock bar broke inside the connector. Took me about 30 mins to remove the plastic from the inside but other than that everything was easy.

Just wanted to help everyone out that comes here with a lock bar getting stuck!!! We thought we had the same issue! It's NOT shown in the video, but all you have do is press in on grey "locking" mechanism button/bar immediately above it, & then it will "release" the lock bar! :-)

It’s confusing because at least one other comment here insists on “looking down the right side of the unit” but I think they meant the right side LATCH area specifically, as that’s where the button is, which would make a lot more sense. Yes, that button tells the machine the door is latched and MAY govern the part that locks the door and if messed with MAY grab and hold onto the Lock Bar, as the bar has on the insertion end a closed hook that could get unintentionally “locked” into place.

Hi GnarlyRC. You turn off the circuit breaker if you do not unplug the washer. The reason is to make sure their is no power to the washer while you are doing the door reversal. Thanks for asking. ~RF
DO NOT USE THE LOCK BAR! Mine got stuck and I had to open the whole assembly to release. AGAIN DO NOT USE THE LOCK BAR AS STATED IN THE VIDEO.

@@geappliances My washing machine is irrelevant in this matter. The video shows the screws being tightened before the hinge cover has been correctly placed, thus deforming the outer edge of the door.
Hello-Thank you for sharing your concern. Tightening the hinge assembly can only be done prior to the hinge cover being screwed into place. While the video shows a slight shift in the rim during this process, the outer rim will not deform. If we can answer any other questions feel free to reach out and let us know. -DM
Anyone doing this you DO NOT need the tool. Don’t buy one. I did for $12 and wish i didn’t. Easy to swap had 0 issues

Why would anyone want to reverse the door??
To be able to easily transfer clothes from the washer to the dryer without having to go around the open door.
Hello Garrett. You might need to reverse the door if your dryer needs to be on the opposite side in some homes. GA

bought a front load GE washer less than 3 years ago..paid almost $1400.00 for it....now it crapped out..been waiting for parts for almost 8 months now....after this long wait..they tell us that the unit is obsolete so they offered an exchange with one of these newer so -called ultra fresh washers for $450...and guess what? during the first usage..during the spin cycle..it start slamming against the membrane inside the unit and the noise is ridiculously loud.....called GE..they said call the service department...cant come out and service it for another 3 weeks....are they frigging kidding me?..folks stay away from GE...buy from another vendor like Samsung..LG..Electrolux ..just dont buy GE...they sell junk...and yes the unit is level.

@@geappliances The lock bar broke off in the lock (seems to be a common problem, thus my request for an updated video). I had to purchase an entirely new lock mechanism and lock bar for a 1 day old washer 😠

This step is dreadfully worded. “Remove the assembly by PULLING it towards the center,pushing it up and pulling it out”

pushing it up- huh? in the video they dont use anything to push it
pulling it out- so how do I push it and pull at the same time
I am finding this step incredibly difficult to remove. Pretty sure i am going to break it trying to get it out. Would make it much easier to show how the teeth of this part secure to the door.
I just got it and it and the directions are TOTALLY wrong. You should pull it AWAY from the center of the door. There is literally one small plastic tooth holding this in and if you pull towards the center of the door you will be applying tension on the tooth.

DO NOT USE THE LOCKBAR!! That tool broke the lock mechanism. I was lucky to find a replacement part ($50). What a royal pain. Terrible instructions.

WARNING lock bar gets easily stuck and then GE will refuse to replace the jammed door, overpriced shitty units avoid at all costs!!! Modern day appliances are all a scam so don't be a dip shit and overpay thinking more expensive is better when they'll just crap out in a year or two anyhow woops hope you bought a warranty
