This was one of your more POWERFUL videos. I had no Idea you had autism. When you hugged Mikko, she literally just melted- but in a GOOD way, into your arms. The tension, anxiety, slowly, just ebbed away. I have the utmost respect for you.
You are teaching things that cannot be learned from a text book, and I applaud you.

Mikko was so conscious of the camera. She also tried extremely hard to fight those meltdowns. I also noticed how great she did with numbers as opposed to the colour coordinating puzzle. She really tries hard in everything she does. It's just that she seems locked in inside herself (since she can't communicate like her mom said), on top of ALL THAT, she's still a toddler & have to navigate the world like any other typical toddler who's still learning how to express emotions.
    You're doing great Mikko baby

I cry every time I see you comfort Mikko. Such a gentle soul you are. I love Mikko, and when she says “Thank you” my heart bursts. You and your husband are so patient, loving and kind. I often think about how you’re both doing, mentally. This must be challenging but clearly God knows you’re up to the test. You are your family are in my heart. I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers too. Thank you for sharing and for teaching. 🙏🏽

Each human is unique and special. There is no one method that fits all. I know we all want Mikko to accomplish every task given, and she is, will or try...but in her time. It's painful to see her go thru her meltdowns and/or shutdowns. But that is a part of her communicating. I love the way you and your family live.I too can shutdown when I feel I'm not being understood, it's not weakness it's a method of communication. But after time is taken or given I try again. Communication is a Gift, sometimes the gift is received as given. But when we learn to listen, hear and understand what is being said thru words or actions..life gets better. We can all do better, just continue to do your best. Good job to you all

You are doing an excellent job with Mikko. You are patient, loving and kind. You have a lot on your plate because you not only have Mikko and helping her navigate through autism but you also have the twins whom I believe you mentioned one of the twins also has autism. And you are still mourning the loss of your most recent pregnancy which is very difficult. And you are also a wife which brings it's own responsibilities. That is a lot. Please make sure you are taking care of yourself because caregiver burnout is a real thing.
Mikko is doing extremely well because of all the work you are doing with her. She is a very bright little girl. She seems to get frustrated though when multiple activities are placed upon her. Once she can grasp one activity I would leave it at that for at least a day or two. Because it seems like the goal should be confidence building not how much she can do. Confidence within herself will lead to less and less meltdowns which are caused by frustration in not believing in herself that she can accomplish a specific task or tasks. Maybe the goal should be learning one skill a day such as the puzzle pieces and once she learns that allow her to do the same task over and over for as long as it takes. And then move on to another activity.
She is doing really well and will be very prepared to go into a structured school setting at some point with supports in place.

Mikko is very smart from a number of videos I have watched. To me she communicates very clearly about what she wants and doesn't want.
Navigating her autism is challenging, but Mikko is very clear.
Any thoughts about the speed of switching her activities? It seems as if she needs time to adjust to the switch. Maybe let her lead how she want to do the activity before guiding her.
You are doing an amazing job. Still praying for all of you.🙏🏾

  • @yoDezi

When she’s doing a task that could cause potential frustration, try having a stress ball or something she can use to export that frustration on to, rather than pulling on her clothes. The energy needs to be placed somewhere so she can get it out. But it needs to be an external neutral object not her clothes or her body. Stress balls or squishiest are a great place to transfer that negative energy. I think she was getting most upset that you wouldn’t let her pull her shirt, but she didn’t know what else to do to get her angries out. Just an idea, but try having something on hand for moments like that. You’re doing great! I love how you’re so calm and gentle modeling calmness for her! Love y’all!

Seems like it’s a lot of pressure on her. It Has to be fun mom 😢and this was not fun for her. Most pre school teachers show alot more excitement when kids do things the correct way because it gives them the confidence and courage to want to learn. Next thing you know she’ll be trying to get your attention after she does it the right way because she knows your going to be so enthused and that’s what kids like to see. They want to make you proud but when there is a lot of pressure to do the work right way and there is no enthusiasm it makes them less confident and they have melted downs. Even kids that aren’t autistic are the same.

Kids do whatever is allowed. Sometimes they even get upset when they don’t get things right and that’s ok but I wouldn’t call it a meltdown. Sometimes kids can be e very spoiled and when it’s time to learn or do work they may not want to get into serious mode so then comes a good ole tantrum or a slight attitude. So kids will definitely try you out but as the adult you must put your foot down and stick to it and not fall for their cute faces , dreamy eyes and/or say no and don’t feel bad about it again kids will cry even knowing things will be ok ❤️🙏🏾

You doing a great Job mama! Our 7 yo has ASD. I totally get you. Not sure if you have her in therapies. They are very effective especially if you are also an involved parent. Tantrums, meltdowns, sensory issues are part of the journey. But it get better speech helps them express themselves, occupational therapies helps with sensory issues , behavioral therapy helps with behaviors, adaptation, expressive language and much more. Therapies are worth it. As child grows new challenges arise. There are so many resources out there! And school even part time with help with socialization. We are involved in all our son therapies and always request activities/ tips to help our son at home. We see our son bloom and progress and celebrate every single tiny milestone! God bless you and you family. Remember it takes a village. Use your resources. We live in miami florida. 💙

Wouldn't that give to much authority to the child? I'm asking because I don't know. Can that make a child act disrespectful if you do that. I know she's autistic but she's a child like other children in most ways.🤔

@@Denise-se2rb i don't see the problem with it. I feel like that's a reasonable amount of autonomy for a child. all she would be doing is finding a way for her to ask nicely not to be held when she's overwhelmed

Just an observation - it seems Mikko is becoming increasingly aware that she is being recorded. Not sure if that is good, bad, or nothing at all.

Mikko está mirando a su padre que seguramente estará grabando, creando un contacto visual con él. No tiene nada que ver con la cámara ni que la estén grabando creo.

exactly. It is not okay to film autistic meltdowns. It’s also not okay to film children until they’re older because they do not understand. Especially since this little girl is nonverbal, she CANNOT give consent.

I still think she is having alot of tantrums , and she's still a child . Any child who thinks and knows they can get away with it , will . I think your an amazing mother and your daughter is doing amazing . Developmentally i think she's excelling .
You and your husband in another video were talking about getting her into therapy. People who are autism certified. I think that would help you in so many ways . Watch how they deal with her meltdowns, tantrums . Keep up the phenomenal work.

My grandson is autistic. He is 22 now and has improved a lot in his behavior. It is very important that your daughter gets medication. My daughter went through a lot with my grandson but she never gave up and has the patience of a saint. She is the best mother ever. His meds have helped him to control his emotions. If they do not get meds it is impossible for them to control emotions and learn.

I’m not trying to say you’re a bad mom, I think you’re an amazing mom. You do such an amazing job with your daughter!
With the cookie sorting activity, she knew what the instruction was. She deliberately did the wrong thing and looked at you to see if you’d allow her to continue, THAT was the right time to correct her not after you had already allowed her to do the wrong thing. The meltdown began because you had already allowed her to do the wrong thing in the activity and then after her meltdown you let her know that it didn’t matter. This is why she had the second meltdown, she might have expected you to budge.

Tanka, have you worked with children on the spectrum or have one of your own? I'm thinking not because if you correct every little thing an autistic child does, they become frustrated and overwhelmed.

My take: perhaps Mikko wanted to play creatively with the colors (her dad is an artist, after all). It kind of looked like she was going for the opposites of the color wheel, and got a little frustrated when it didn’t turn out as she imagined. Thanks for being a great mom, and letting her stack her numbers! After she was able to stack and got praise for it, she then did what she knew you expected from her. You know best of course, and I only assume from what I see. 💚 I bet she’ll look up to you one day. =]

What an awful thing to say to a mother. You should be ashamed of yourself for being so ignorant and inconsiderate. Telling this mother that she's uptight and her husband does a better job than her is rude and insensitive. People like you make me so sick with your judgemental attitude, like stfu if you don't have anything nice to say. You're rude and condescending. Tightness and tension? Wtf are you talking about? This mom hugs, holds, reassures, and comforts her daughter any time she needs it. Both parents have shown signs of being overwhelmed and frustrated, which is to be expected in circumstances like these. Your comment was hurtful and disgusting, and you are way out of line.

I have aspergers. I was diagnosed late in life
Because I don't know you please forgive me if I am too presumptuous.
Did you know certain fabrics and even the tag can be triggering?. I watched her grab her shirt and I could feel it.
You may find many answers by watching the film Temple Grandin.. She was and still is an extreme autistic.
    She also does TED talks

Question, how many hours a day is she being filmed?? She appears to be looking at the camera when she cries. Maybe that's why she responds to her Dad differently than you, he shows affection without having her do these "exercises." She's very smart. JS
