What makes a masterpiece these days lol I gotten used to moving my characters in games and they consider themselves rpg is just pushing one button to do everything considered a masterpiece?
@@kheartslasher1754 In my opinion to make a modern masterpiece JRPG, a lot of things have to line up. Soundtrack, visual style/design, voice acting (if you're going to have it), a plot good enough to keep you invested, worldbuilding and lore, character development, story AND battle pacing so it never feels like a chore or excessive grind, fun and/or impactful surprises and diversions, difficult but not excessively difficult secrets to find, at least one hidden super boss to try out your best on, choices that actually make an impact, character customization.. The list of things that can make a true masterpiece can go on and on. Unsurprisingly the things on this list have spread out of JRPGs into the vast majority of game genres, as JRPGs are what brought a lot of those focuses to the video game market. The best way though to explain what something is, or in this case what makes it, is to give an example. Have you tried Persona 5 Royal? It's the best example off the top of my head from recent times that was an actual masterpiece, although even it has a bit of trouble with pacing at points.
@@dragonnasxavier3473 yes I played persona 5 got the main character killed because I chose poorly and we’ll not eager to play from scratch to try and get the good ending but yes that game is a good example so was the older final fantasy games for me but nowadays they just move and attack like action games so I guess is what I’ve had to accept excluding dragonquest games too they still play like rpg lol
Overhyping only works for marketing stuff. No hype is always good cause you will always get surprised. But I understand for marketing standpoint you gotta hype up a bit
Bravely Default is a great pick for this list. I loved the first 75%ish of the game, but once the time travel started to kick in or sucked my soul away.
i uncovered the secret once, beat the boss and then never went back to do all the loops and get the true ending that was ending enough for me, thanks, decent twist
@@AAAAAAAAA1 Same. I looped the first time then on the second loop discovered the secret and had my “AH HA!!!” moment and thought THAT was when the game would end but then the game forces you to do several more loops for NO reason and I just couldn’t do it. In my mind I finished the game
We need more people like Erik. When he described Ni No Kuni, the respectful acknowledgement that it's good but not for him? That's a mentality everyone needs lol
@@Chidon0 Grind a lot? I dunno about that. I had a pretty easy time running through that game. Think I'd only need to grind in the post game, but isn't that par for the course in this genre? Would still rather play it over Pokemon any day of the week though.
Some quick Timestamps: 0:25 That 3DS game that isnt Final fantasy but lowkey is. 1:55 That Final fantasy that got a remake but nobody seem to talk about. 3:43 Discount YS but turn-based. 5:14 That dungeon-crawler roguelike jrpg with the blonde angel made by Sting. 6:36 Yakuza Like a Dragon Quest 0 8:02 The game made by the guy that years later made a game with a thicc robot. 9:41 Sonic Frontier 11:00 Studio Ghibli Presents Pokemon 13:12 The game that stinks 15:00 Kingdom heart, which one? Ah, Final Fantasy Type-0 is definitely one of my all time favorites, its such a brilliant game. I really enjoyed playing with Sice and Seven, i feel like it takes time to fall into a rhythm and get the battle system, but it feels INCREDIBLY rewarding when you do! I hope one day you can reconsider and give it another shake, i think the mid to end storybeat is right up your alley, Erick.
Baroque, Saga Frontier, Chrono Cross, and The entire Kingdom Hearts series are pretty much top of the list of games I wanted to really love but they never just did it for me. But you know what? It's all apart of being a gamer. I also have a long list of games I thought would be total shit, yet they actually are some of my favorites
My biggest problem with Saga Frontier is that no matter which character you pick, you end up having to do the same three or four sidequests to power them up for what little there is of their individual plots.
I loved Type-0. It was basically the Cater game to me. She was just so fast and fun to play. I did Finis difficulty, got the Gold Mantle etc. and put a lot of time in, mostly thanks to Cater.
@@Pikachu-qr4yb i played it just a few years back, its aged great both graphically and gameplay wise imo. Honestly, its my absolute favorite Final Fantasy, i really resonated with it.
I'm always wondering why everyone hate that part in Bravely Default, it wasn't that long, or hard, and it had interesting interactions between the Asterisks holders.
@@Vayne_Solidor I think you could skip half of that. I found that a godd design choice, and I didn't do them one after another because I did the subquests.
I’m new to the genre so I’ve been looking for cool games to try out. Picked Octopath Traveller because I heard it was good. I just couldn’t get into it. I played like five hours or so and I don’t know if I was doing it wrong, but it was hard as hell. I raged quit when I fought an enemy who poisoned me like every turn. Plus I struggled so much to get the enemies armor down only for them to get it back after one turn. Every fight felt like it dragged on forever. Loved the music and graphics though.
That’s definitely an interesting perspective. I’m enjoying Octopath Traveler because of the challenge but that’s after 20 years of playing turn-based RPGs. Ironically, I think games like Final Fantasy 4, 6, 7, or Chrono Trigger would be a better place to begin because their systems are more straightforward. After getting a deep understanding for battle mechanics, games like Octopath Traveler or SMT become a lot more fun.
@@fishingmule3266 the first “JRPG” I beat was Persona 3 last month so I’m pretty new to all this. Maybe Octopath Traveler shouldn’t be one of the first ones I play lol. It kicked my butt.
@@geojimz It seems you didn't understand the basic combat loop, then. The idea is using the first encounters with a random enemy as a testing ground for their weaknesses, and then after that abuse them to break them and then go all out using all your BP once they're unconscious. After that when you encounter the same kind of enemy, you try to craft a strategy for a turn one kill (you'll even get bonus JP for doing that). You don't really need to uncover all their weaknesses, although it bothers me to see the "?" there, that's why I always have a scholar in the party. Characters level up very fast in the early game, and they recharge all their MP and HP upon level up, so abusing skills like the Hunter's Rain of Arrows is not a bad idea. Also, for a first playthrough, I'd recommend gathering all 8 playable characters ASAP so you can have a better range of actions from the get-go. Anyway, keep this in mind if you want to give the game another go. It's a very fun experience when you get into the groove of managing the battles.
Here are mine: Final Fantasy 12 Persona 5 Pokémon X and Y Fire Emblem Binding Blade Edge of Eternity Xenosaga 2 Trails of Cold Steel 2 Suikoden 4 Golden Sun (both 1 and 2 as they're two parts of the same story)
Dragon Warrior was awesome when it was new(er) and my elementary school brain loved it. As an adult, you can't really play it and enjoy it because of how primitive everything is, but you can enjoy the nostalgia of remembering how amazing it was for the time. Oddly, as an adult, I think DW2 was way better but at the time of release, I hated it.
Hey Eric, if you didn't liked Ni No Kuni on the PS3 you should try it on DS, it's the exact same story but it is a full JRPG with turn battles. Unfortunately it is a Japan Exclussive but there is a very good translation to Spanish that includes the Vademecum for all the puzzles this games has. It is a very good game, and I actually enjoyed the DS version, contrary to the PS3 one.
I beat it recently and it certainly is a great game. However, the whole time I was thinking how it is so repetitive and I can totally understand why people would dislike it
My game that I really tried to like is Chrono Cross. I'd heard all over the internet how amazing it was, and I just didn't like it. There were many characters, but they were mostly underdeveloped. The world felt small even with the time travel, and the combat was just not very enjoyable. I did play it through until the end but just never felt anything for the game.
I enjoyed it, not as much as chrono trigger but it has its own charm. The points you made are spot on, the world felt tiny, the characters were like ridiculously abundant. However it' has this charm as an early ps1 title with a gorgeous art style and fine Combat. It could've been way better but what we got isn't horrible
The same happened to me, I think too many people are carried by nostalgia. I finished the game last year for the first time, but it was a slog. Combat is slow and boring, graphics haven't aged well and almost all characters are merely fillers. It's not all bad, but I felt it was a decent game at best, and a disappointment if we compare it to Chrono Trigger or any Final Fantasy of the same era.
Has Mr. Landon done an inverse of this list before? Something like "10 JRPGs I've Liked Despite the Odds" or "10 Pleasant Surprises with JRPGs" Kinda changing the topic really hard here, but I feel like so many of my favorites are just that The World Ends With You, which is probably one of my favorites, at least for the DS, was a game I dropped several times in my early teens since my kid brain couldn't wrap itself around the dual screen mechanic Going back to it high school, I found it so incredibly fun gameplay-wise, and the story is one of the few that can make me feel emotional while going through it even after so long
Type-0 is actually one of my favorites 😅 the combat isn’t really that bad. It’s pretty much Dark Souls without the stamina bar. That said, not every character is fun to play. Like Ace is a pretty good character, but he takes a while to get used to. If you want to get the best damage with him, you have to factor in the starting wind up of his attacks and the time it takes for his projectiles to travel. Then you have Jack. The only character who refuses to run while his weapon is drawn.
It's jank as hell but once you get used to it, it's a pretty fun and challenging game. Plus WW2+Final Fantasy is like the best combination I could ever dream of.
Type-0 is one of my faves... that ending hit me hard in the feels, it was so memorable to me. Also, seeing the Eidolons used as weapons of mass destruction in a WWII setting was so cool, especially the Alexander summon.
I feel that with Bravely Default. I think I only would've loved it if it was the literal first handheld JRPG I'd ever played, since every time I play it, it just makes me want to play an SMT or FF game. Earthbound and Kingdom Hearts as well, since they're just so goofy (no pun intended) that I can't take them seriously, let alone be able to tell WHEN I'm supposed to take them seriously.
Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler 1 could've been amazing RPGs. It's just one thing that's holding them back. Bravely Default for its repetitive second half and Octopath Traveler for its generic character stories (aside from Primrose) and lack of character interaction.
Nier Automata, I really didn't like it at all, and I forced myself to follow it to find out if maybe I was going to like it more in the end, unfortunately it didn't happen and it only made me confirm that I don't like it 😅
drakengard i got it very cheap, i played for les than 5 minutes skiping cinematics and didnt liked because i wanted someting similar to chaos legion, i tried to rid of it selling to my circle of friends and acuantices, nobody wanted, i return home along with the game, tinking to put in the shelve and forget about it, then one day i hear incredible dialogues, crazies characters, and then voices of children dying, while my brother were playing, i then forget about, the bad things and only could see the fact that i can play as a psicopat prince with a party of freaks without redemption. and love it
Aww man i loved FF Type-0, that ending had me in tears Combat is very fast paced and engaging, and the soubtrack is hype Wish the HD port was a little more high budget like Crisis Core Reunion though, it deserved it
I can fully understand Ni No Kuni. I love it because it's a Ghibli style story and world. Similar with Earthbound. I love the game but it's so slow that I have never actually finished it.
Out of all the games on this list, I recognized three and have my own insights and observations to express. 1. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD-This is one of my favorite FF games ever; one of the best qualities is that it’s the only PS4 game that doesn’t have DLC depriving you of content that should otherwise be included. The entirety of game is on disc/download file. I get the confusion on understanding the battle system as I was a little thrown off at first but once I buckled down and played, I found myself liking the game more and more. It has great replay value, one of my favorite soundtracks, good mechanics, character development with plot depth, and more. I get the overwhelming feeling of trying to get comfortable with 14 different characters each with their own fighting style but if you ever try to give it another go, perhaps you will have a different perspective. 2. Ni No Kuni-This is easily one of my favorite games ever; it was the first PS3 game I ever got platinum trophy and I was overjoyed when an HD remaster came out for PS4 in recent years. Just like FF Type-0, great story, amazing soundtrack by Joe Hisiashi, and interesting designs on the familiars you tame and raise for battle. I can see how the battle system can be frustrating at first but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually not that bad and when you get good familiars with good arsenal of abilities, you can have some epic battles of might and magic. 3. Kingdom Hearts-I will preface by admitting I’ve only played the main numbered entries. I do have the All-In-One collection but as of this message, I’ve only completed 1, 2, and 3; I haven’t finished the other entries like dream drop distance, chain of memories, etc. Don’t get me started on Yozora from Re:Mind DLC because that’s an instant ass kicking from him to Sora; he will take me out faster than I can blink. That aside, I found my experience very enjoyable and eagerly await the release of KH4 when it comes out. Those are my thoughts and thanks for your video.
Saga Frontier is so good but you definitely need a guide for it. It is one of those games that throws you in the deep end while not telling you anything, not even skill progression. It has an amazing concept but the execution is very bad. It is one of those games that kind of deserves a remake in order to flush out exactly what it wants to do while making it more approachable by basically adding in a quest log and other details that update as you progress. They have some amazing characters
The execution is garbage on Romancing SaGa 1 and especially 3. I've never played the second game, but I feel that SaGa Frontier 1 is the first game in the SaGa series to take the open ended gameplay and to actually have a good game. Romancing SaGa 3 on the other hand after you finish the opening scenario has you go through dozens of quests and every single one of them has a boss at the end that just steam rolls your ass. Romancing SaGa 1 isn't as bad, but Romancing SaGa 3 I just can't even stand to play the game because it's constant trial and error to find where to go that you can hopefully make any progress. Once you get destroyed by at the end of the 20th quest boss in a row, it's like, I'm done with this pos game, and I've given it several chances. Straight garbage game. There's a reason some games have stayed in Japan, and it's because the developers saw what pieces of sh** they were and decided not to release them in the west. Not because it was an amazing game that they wanted to keep for themselves.
@@unkelp3955 Romancing SaGa 1 and 3 are just bad games, I have no problem with the much better FFL1, 2, 3, and SaGa Frontier games. I have even less of a problem with Unlimited Saga, just that stupid reel system.
KH Chain of Memories is the best game in the series and I'm unapologetic in that declaration. Specifically the gba version, the remake is cool but it's way too easy even on Proud, Osaka team doesn't know how to balance correctly. The combat is a mix of strategy and arpg and it's amazingly unique. My number one complaint is, aside from Riku's mode which is just the second part of the game, there's zero post game content. The story is a great mindbender for our protagonist and if you know nothing about the series you'll be getting mind bent too, well at least 10 year old me was. But I feel you, I've fallen out of love with the series too, hated 3 but 4 looks really promising if it focuses on the Versus XIII stuff.
I have fond memories of Fortress of Doom mostly because its the first RPG I ever played. Naturally I recognize it isn't really a good RPG, but I'm interested in playing mods of it that fix some of the game's issues. Its also why I say that Curse of the Sinistrals was a terrible idea. They remade the best game in the series only to make it worse. If they remade Fortress of Doom in that style instead I think it would have been far better received.
You are in luck! A mod that reduces the encounter rate of Lufia - The Fortress of Doom was released last year (by me). 🙂 Also, check out the mod Lufia - The Fortress of Doom Restored!
As a side note for Ni no Kuni, you're free to switch between Uminos and party members on the fly (it's actually more effective to use Oliver on hard battles and boss battles, and your Uminos for support and quick damage to save mp), but i understand why not everyone would love the quirky battle system. Actually the "I really tried to loved it so much" doe me was Xenoblade Chronicles 2, anyway, the story is amazing tough. Same with Octopath, and also the fact that you're not free to use whichever formation you like, and you're forced to pick the episode's character.
Earthbound still had some good ideas today's RPGs don't even when they should. For example attacking an enemy from behind and being overleveled for them automatically nets you the win, exp, and items. Also if your character gets attacked and is going to die from it the health goes down, but you have a chance to heal them before it goes down entirely instead of seeing them automatically die thus having to revive with an item or spell.
As someone who's favorite rpg on the ps1 is Saga Frontier, I totally understand your issues with the game... the remaster fixes a good portion of your issues. They added a quest tracker and gives tips on where to go to advance the main story of each character. Added in new game plus so when you finish 1 story you can carry over items, abilities, levels, and a bunch of stuff to a new story so when you recruit those characters again they already are as bad ass as you had them before I'd say it's worth the effort and I'd even buy you a copy so you don't waste your own money just in case you still hate it.
I fully recommend starting as either The Robot or Amelia. Lute is one of the quickest with literally only 2 mission points to finish his campaign. But yeah the remaster is such an improvement. Also adds a new character that unlocks after you beat 1 of the other 7. Which expands upon the lore of the world.
FF Type-0's story is similar to FF15 but darker. It puts more emphasis on the horrors of war and how they affect the world than it does on the personal issues of any specific character. Whether it comes to anime or video games, I honestly seem to be in the minority when it comes to liking a world focused story. Most people seem to very drastically prefer character focused stories and especially ones that contain romance.
The overarching story in Type-0 really was fantastic, i cant say i didnt cry several times. I thought it was a masterpiece of a game. I wish more people could appreciate it! (Especially considering it was a freaking portable game, i think thats mindblowing)
I’ve been playing through big name RPG series in release date order to see how they evolved over time, and the RPG I really wanted to like, but couldn’t was Phantasy Star 2, I just couldn’t deal with all grinding and I usually don’t care that much about grinding. It’s just that you have about 8 party members and they all join at Lv. 1 and for some reason you need to head back to the house you left at the start of the game to obtain them. Also, the first thing you need to do when starting the game is grind, so it feels like the story comes to a complete halt after you obtain the last party member if you actually want to use them as well as for the final confrontation where everybody needs grind. People also really love the story, but I couldn’t really get into it because the party seems barely involved and the ending comes out of nowhere, because the story is somewhat of a mystery or least it felt like one to me at the start of the game hook the player in. As to why these strange anomalies are occurring in our AI maintained society.
Fun fact: In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep to get the full story you need to play all 3 characters and a 4th ending story. Terra being the worse to control so your dodge a bullet there.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD... I bought this game on Day 1 (for PS4). I thought "Final Fantasy game, I must love it", dumped it in the first 5 minutes and never looked back.
Bravely defualt is 70% ff 1 in story and structure right uptill the near end twist, i think the build up is worth the pay off twist, it went from a 6/10 to a soild 9/10 for me. but yeah i understand if you don't want to go though most of it for the madd twist.
As a fan of the Drakengard series, I agree with what you said about the first game. The story's very different and dark which I liked, but the combat and controls were abysmal. Hoping for a remaster would be considered, with the people who made Nier automata on the combat. But im unsure I'll see another Drakengard game now. It didn't do well outside Japan afaik
Damn. I'm sorry that you couldn't enjoy Bravely Default. It's my favorite game of all time and got me hooked into RPGs. In fact I just beat FFV last night, the game that BD's Job System is based on. The story is on the generic side but I really enjoyed the big twist of the game. I really enjoyed the characters and a lot of villains got more depth towards the back end of the game. The combat was so fun and so customizable that even though I've played games with better combat systems, I still hold BD's(and its sequels) in high regard. Plus almost 10 years after I played it, it still has my favorite soundtrack in any video game. Revo hit it out of the park and listening to his songs for the first time in game is something I will never forget. I agree it's not the best RPG out there and it's got its issues, but it's the game that not only got me hooked into RPGs, but got me into gaming as a serious hobby.
Tastes are different from person to person. Resonance of Fate for instance is one of my favorites in this list, but Im also a sucker for Steampunk/Sci-fantasy/Gun-action and Martial Arts over the top things (DMC, Bayonetta, Wet, Max Payne, Wild Arms, FF7, FF8, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Arcanum and such. Most of them not so much RPGs, more action games), so RoF seemed to combine it all. A game I wanted to like, but never realy stuck with and played (even if I have the two or three first games) is the Kingdom hearts games. Cheers.
type-0 is one the best if not the best game on the psp at least on my opinion. if crisis core make you emotional at the end, type-0 does that too but multiply that by twelve. i like CC but i always thought that zack is like dumb kid for the most part, there's characters like that in type but at least not all of them are like that. i don't know, maybe i love it so much because im a sucker for games or stories that involved war and type-0 really did a good job at presenting of what could war have effect on people. and the sound track, zero by the bump of chicken makes me a fan of the Japanese band. all in all i think this game might be supposed to play at the right time to fully appreciate. i first play it in my younger years and with a co op buddy so yeah, i still think it's one of the best final fantasy. i just hope many consider this game a try and if still don't like it, atleast endure until you make to the summoning of the alexandra. cuz that shit is good.
The Last Story. I really wanted to like that one, but really had to push myself through. Luckily, it wasn't that long and I finished it, but it felt more like a chore than anything. Will never go back to that one.
The biggest one would be FFXIII. I played it solely for the music. I was convinced that a game couldn’t be THAT bad if it had that great of music. I got about 12-15 hours in. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but I just thought my time would be better spent elsewhere. Others: FFIX, FFX, FFXV, xenoblade, Ni no kuni, Grandia, Earthbound, Nier automata
So you're a supposed RPG gamer yet you get easily bored with encounters in Bravely Default? I would totally understand it if at least the game had many random encounters or if the gameplay was too easy, at least I hope you don't like the SMT franchise too otherwise it would be really weird how now you like that grindy system.
I also found it hard to go back to older RPGs. We are used to advanced gameplay options with modern systems. I respect the old games but get bored with the old gameplay and combat styles. Earthbound is a good example. However I respect the hell out of those games.
Xenosaga Episode 2. Loved the first one and felt it was a fun, albeit extremely anime, experience. Episode 2 rolls around, and as much as I wanted to continue the story, the combat was such a nightmarish slog that I couldn't bring myself to continue. One day, I'll watch the 15 hours of cutscenes on RUclips and try Episode 3.
I had this exact issue, the graphical change and the gameplay just nosedived the whole experience for me, which sucks because the story is so fantastic.
Just watch a combat tutorial on RUclips. Its combat is by far the best in the series, but it’s poorly explained in the game. Just watching 20 minutes of someone explaining how to do it will save you hours and hours of trying to play without using the actual systems available to you.
@@fishingmule3266 Respectfully, the problem wasn't that I didn't understand the combat, the problem was that it was entirely too time consuming. Having to exploit break points to do any real damage to most enemies meant that even standard battles took like 10 turns of doing nothing while getting shot in the face, followed by unleashing a combo with your whole team to kill the enemy in one go. That kind of thing is admittedly cool for a big fight, but slows down the game way too much to have most of the standard battles be the same way. However, I did take your advice. Watching a video on it have me the following tips: 1) Use Analyze often (I actually did this already), 2) Use elemental abilities to exploit said weaknesses (I used all the ones I had available), 3) Stocking then unleashing combos is the most reliable way to deal damage (my core issue), 4) Only 3/7 characters are worth using (I'll disagree, but if I'm wrong, that's actually another issue with the game's combat), and 5) They recommend grinding for about 30 hours with one character's solo section (not one of the previously mentioned "useful" ones) in order to make the game easier (Not gonna lie, I've done similar things in some other games, but WT ACTUAL F?! His clear data was 90 hours long, 30 of that was a single block of mindless grinding, and that made the process EASIER?) I'm going to double down on my assessment of mindless slog. If you have a particular video you'd like to point to illustrate how I'm doing it wrong, I'd actually love to see it.
@@jamesoakes4842 oops, my mistake. I read that as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 somehow. I’m a dummy. I haven’t even played through the Xenosaga trilogy yet. I apologize for leading you on a wild goose chase
I don't know how different they are mechanically, but I really liked the Dragon Quest remaster on the Switch. At the very least, the graphics are greatly updated.
I wasn't a fan of Bravely Default when I played it at first, but I appreciated the game when I played the game a second time (when I was playing along HCBailly's Let's Play of the game). He showed off content that I ignored during my first playthrough that actually made the game more interesting. I never beat the first Kingdom Hearts game. There is just something about Kingdom Hearts, I just can't get into.
i went in with below 0 expectations for type-0 but the game somehow managed to disappoint in every single aspect. thank god Square gave Tabata the boot, he has only made shit up to this point
I love Type-0. Finished all missions on highest difficulty. And it's 358 OVER 2 days. I platinumed a lot KHs, 2 is the best. Bravely Default is ok but the time loop section is pathetic. But I played through and got a great final dungeon. And look up the final boss theme, Serpent that devours the horizon, it's a banger.
The way to approach Dragon Warrior on NES is just to appreciate the simplicity. Not every game needs endless story and party members. Just enjoy the music and building up exp and gold. Even the spells are super basic with names like “hurt” and “hurt more” iirc. Sometimes it’s refreshing not to see 10 minute cutscenes and always hearing about characters’ feelings. Just kill the Dragonlord and save the princess and tempt not the fates!!
Most of them was good when they was just released. Especially Type-0. About "long" ps1-ps2 games they was made like that because of shops where buyers was allowed to return games in several days and in 90s-00s everyone loved long games. >we pay 50$ for game! game must be at least 40h+ long! I still remember game magazines judging games by how long was gameplay. We must also remember that most games created for kids. At least they required to be family friendly.
Xenosaga Episode 1. A promising start, but I gradually found the plot too cryptic and fragmented to be worth tackling the big difficulty spikes. Still finished it out of obligation though, and enjoyed the Xenocard mini-game more. Suggestion: Top 5 things you would like to see a future JRPG do.
Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XII, Radiant Historia, Nexomon(PS1) and Disgae to name some. All should fill my "like" list, but rub me the wrong way somehow
I agree 100% on Drakengard, Ni No Kuni (1, 2 is one of my favorite ARPGs of all time. I just loved the kingdom building, citizen recruiting, research part and the story of a character basically spirited from another world as his right hand man is cool, but the fact the ending is actually pretty realistic is a nice touch.), Kingdom Hearts (I played a bunch of 1 & 3, BBS, and CoM, and just could never follow through), and Bravely Default. Honestly, it's a series that gets tons of praise for the same things that the Tactics series, Fire Emblem series, and FF series do, but with the cutesy 'new SE' graphics that actually works well in games like Oninaki (a better game) or I Am Setsuna (a far better story). I genuinely believe, if SE ever remakes FFIX, they'll use a similar graphics engine, and I probably wouldn't be mad. Particularly if they did away with random battles, voiced the cast, and remastered the cinematics.
I don't get bravely default's system, don't use a turn for 3 rounds then attack for 3 times damage. Or you could just get through the entire game ignoring the system completely and act every round.
1:34 What I thought about the 86: eighty Six anime (except that I finished it and liked the final part) 3:35 Trails of Cold Steel sin (except that it is a main arc) 5:19 this JRPG would have work much better as a manga or as an anime. Just look at these scenes (5:34) 8:03 Sexual tension with Dragons: the series 16:33 Those are your reasons of why you consider KH an overrated series. The game who dissapointed me the most was Mass Effect Andromeda (not a JRPG I know). Mass Effect trilogy is my fav gaming series.. so imagine how I felt about Andromeda.. issues.
I was Totally the opposite with Type - 0...I thought i was going to hate it and after I learned to the battle system, it became one of my favorite final fantasys of all time
I kinda wish I could like story telling that we see in Kingdom Hearts as then I would never be unsatisfied with any story no matter how poorly written.
Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana are my 2, "I really wanted to like it but just couldn't get into them" games... Roast me all you want and I truly tried but just couldn't. I may get back to them in the future and try again though
Chrono Trigger is definitely one I have never been able to get into and it came out when I was a child. Always got bored and never finished it. Even after watching playthroughs to actually get to experience the story... eh? It's decent, but I don't see the "masterpiece" everyone hypes the heck out of. I enjoyed Chrono Cross more and a loooot of people treat CC like an affront to god.
I remember playing FF0 with my brother and REALLY late in game we fought behemoth like enemies in a canyon. And in the background we heard Eight going wild. Thought it was a bug until the camera turned on him and he was in a punching rage xD We never knew he could do that and all you had to do was holding a button. That was our main char and main move from that point on 😁Did you play LostMagic on DS btw?
Saga Frontier probably hurts the most for me - great character design, beautiful environments and some truly interesting concepts, but it gets completely drowned out with the frustrating battle system, unfinished elements and confusing interface.
BTW the original Baroque did get an English translation patch recently. I'm not going to say it's a better use of your time, but the atmosphere is so much better in the original compared to the remake.
I agree with just about every single one of the games in this list except for Bravely Default, Earthbound, and SaGa Frontier. The first Dragon Warrior on the NES was my first RPG, and while a long time ago I did like the game, it didn't take too many RPGs afterwards to just see that it's not a very good game at all. I don't care if it's my first RPG and if it's the first Japanese developed RPG, but a bad game is a bad game. I will say something about SaGa Frontier Remastered since you brought it up. While SaGa Frontier is open I don't feel it requires a guide, however, on the Remastered version of the game, there is a checklist option that will tell you exactly where you need to be looking to progress. So for the beginning of Lute's quest it will start off with "Speak to Captain Hamilton in Owmi." So you'll have a general idea of what location you'll need to be at in order to progress. It will tell you this and update this information each time you make any progress.
That’s a shame you couldn’t get into Bravely Default. That is probably my favorite turn based JRPG series ever since Square forgot what Final Fantasy is
I've dropped so many JRPGs that I feel bad with myself, I know this is a hobby and forcing myself to like soemyhing would be akin to turning my entertaining into a chore, but still.
It always feels like I'm betraying the JRPG community when I say this... I just can't get into Octopath Traveller or the entire 2DHD genre. I should love it, those JRPGs it's paying homage to are exactly the kind I grew up playing.
For me Brigandine. I hear about its big name in jrpg. Before playing I really research which nation I will pick. But after one or two battle I give up, nah this game is not for me. Maybe another time I will give it second chance, because I actually like its story.
Man i love kingdom hearts! But completely understand when someone does not like them at the same time hahaha so confusing storyline with Millions of games you HAVE tô play tô understand 😂
I think its hilarious you mention bravely default. Im literally playing the game currently. Finally at the end. I spent hours and hours at chapter 5 grinding my characters and job to max . Then to realize i have to play the game five more times. I dont have the heart to beat the boss rush in chapter 8 . Let alone cleane the crystal for the 100 time. Just gotta beat the boss and its over
break the crystal after defeating the crystal boss by continuing to press A after Airy says thats enough. The boss rush is optional, you can skip through to the final boss.
i feel the same about earthbound and persona 1 maybe if i was alone in one island with energy and this 2 games only... nah i propably would just watch the sea or sleep.
Everyone says the same thing about Drakengard/2 the gameplay is slow. This is true but most people didn't get it day one to understand the way to play it right. It was made to walk to charge your run. A bad design choice sure but that is how it's done. And also the fact that you are leveling BOTH yourself and the dragon so while Caim is slower paced unless running you are leveling him then you hop on the dragon and kill the rest of the enemies till the optional boss and boss appears. One of the biggest surprises on the PS2.
For me it was that Ryza game. Combat was strange, the bombardment of text tutorials around every corner was overwhelming, and the weird crafting system (how does tossing random raw materials into a pot turn it fully forged weapons and tools??) just felt dumb. I wanted to like it but by the time I went out on the second adventure I had already forgotten how combat works due to the many many tutorials and mechanics being thrown at my face. Maybe if I had more time to learn it all I would enjoy it, but I just don't have the time or energy for all that.
My game would be Nier Automata. I LOVED Nier on the PS3 back on the day, and when automata came on the switch I was sooo excited, especially given the hype. But when I played I just thought it was… okay. The story was good, but a little cliche. The game play felt less like an action RPG and more like a bullet hell (which I hate).
Not Saga Frontier! I love that game. Asellus is good for a first character. shes extremely powerful and can trade some LP for an end game weapon in the first area. it trivializes early enemies & bosses. Riki's game is insane though, you do need a guide to understand how the monsters work which is disappointing, & a certain story beat will quite possibly screw you over. I get a kick out of replaying it now, fully understanding the games mechanics.
Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, and Golden Sun are all popular games that I thought were okay, but couldn't really get into. Beyond that, I couldn't stand Star Ocean: Second Story. I can at least see the appeal in the others, but I'm baffled as to why people love SO2 so much.
This is why I always try to keep my expectations to the bare minimum. Overhyping only works out when the game is a friggin masterpiece.
Plus people have different priorities for games. That can also make it to where a trash game for one person could be a great game for another.
Bravely Default is a great pick for this list. I loved the first 75%ish of the game, but once the time travel started to kick in or sucked my soul away.
i uncovered the secret once, beat the boss and then never went back to do all the loops and get the true ending
that was ending enough for me, thanks, decent twist
@@AAAAAAAAA1 Same. I looped the first time then on the second loop discovered the secret and had my “AH HA!!!” moment and thought THAT was when the game would end but then the game forces you to do several more loops for NO reason and I just couldn’t do it. In my mind I finished the game
@@-sets- Trust me, the finale is great. Look up Serpent That Devours The Horizon. It's an awesome track.
Lol same I got to ths final boss and was way too burnt out to grind in order to beat it.
I stopped at the same point as you and want to at least beat it, but now I have no idea how to play.
We need more people like Erik. When he described Ni No Kuni, the respectful acknowledgement that it's good but not for him? That's a mentality everyone needs lol
nino no kuni is an ok game is you want to grind alot and want a pokemon like experience
@@Chidon0 Grind a lot? I dunno about that. I had a pretty easy time running through that game. Think I'd only need to grind in the post game, but isn't that par for the course in this genre? Would still rather play it over Pokemon any day of the week though.
That’s my experience with the mother series. The story and characters are charming, but not enough for my taste to stick with over other rpgs
That's how I feel about Persona 4 Golden. I think it's a good game, but I don't like it.

Agreed but trade seven for tre, the story kicked me right in the feels.
I’m curious what we’re some of the games you had low expectations for but really enjoyed. I’m always looking for new recommendations.
Tales of legendia is considered one of the worst tales of and i love this game
Bravely Default has a mindfuck ending. Very Cool! But you need to play it on the original hardware to enjoy it for real.
That ending was awesome... sadly you had to sit +60 Hours of Game to get it
My biggest problem with Saga Frontier is that no matter which character you pick, you end up having to do the same three or four sidequests to power them up for what little there is of their individual plots.
I loved Type-0. It was basically the Cater game to me. She was just so fast and fun to play. I did Finis difficulty, got the Gold Mantle etc. and put a lot of time in, mostly thanks to Cater.
Me too, although I picked Ace and Rem for highest difficulty. Also got the gold outfit.
@@Vayne_Solidor would you guys say it’s still fun to get into in 2023? Not too worried about bad graphics but just from a gameplay standpoint
@@Pikachu-qr4yb i played it just a few years back, its aged great both graphically and gameplay wise imo. Honestly, its my absolute favorite Final Fantasy, i really resonated with it.
@@dannisprinkles9243 Nice, Im gonn try it. Appreciate your input. Im a big oldschool FF fan so I think i will enjoy it
@@Pikachu-qr4yb good luck! Fair warning, the first boss battle is gonna be a huge curveball in difficulty, but its worth it to muscle through!
The combat in any KH game is pretty top tier
I'm always wondering why everyone hate that part in Bravely Default, it wasn't that long, or hard, and it had interesting interactions between the Asterisks holders.
Erick never made it that far 😂
It was extremely poor design. Doing the same 4 bosses 4 times in a row. Or even 5?
@@Vayne_Solidor I think you could skip half of that. I found that a godd design choice, and I didn't do them one after another because I did the subquests.
@@Lamasis2 Well you can’t skip the 4 tower bosses and the boat boss, but that’s the only non-optional part along with the yulyana section iirc.
@@Lamasis2 Unfortunately the sidequests were also the same all 4/5 time loops
Even JRPGs I didn't love, I still found something in them I liked, so I really can't choose anything
Here are mine:
Final Fantasy 12
Persona 5
Pokémon X and Y
Fire Emblem Binding Blade
Edge of Eternity
Xenosaga 2
Trails of Cold Steel 2
Suikoden 4
Golden Sun (both 1 and 2 as they're two parts of the same story)
However, the whole time I was thinking how it is so repetitive and I can totally understand why people would dislike it
@@thehater6189 Yeah it gets repetitive sometimes, but it always pushes you to go forward due to the story. Endgame dungeons are cool too, and long
My game that I really tried to like is Chrono Cross.
The game isn't bad at all.
But there are better things out there to play
Its carried by the OST. Honestly more than a few times i thought " man this song is too good for this scene" lol
Yeah! Its not a good game at all in my opinion. To think it came out close to ff9 which is my greatest game ever
Has Mr. Landon done an inverse of this list before?
Something like "10 JRPGs I've Liked Despite the Odds" or "10 Pleasant Surprises with JRPGs"
Kinda changing the topic really hard here, but I feel like so many of my favorites are just that
The World Ends With You, which is probably one of my favorites, at least for the DS, was a game I dropped several times in my early teens since my kid brain couldn't wrap itself around the dual screen mechanic
Going back to it high school, I found it so incredibly fun gameplay-wise, and the story is one of the few that can make me feel emotional while going through it even after so long
Type-0 is actually one of my favorites 😅 the combat isn’t really that bad.
Ace I used for all missions on highest difficulty. Once I unlocked Ultima, Rem became the main though.
Jack drove me up a fucking wall. Eight was a fun fighter tho
It's jank as hell but once you get used to it, it's a pretty fun and challenging game. Plus WW2+Final Fantasy is like the best combination I could ever dream of.
It's pretty much nothing like dark souls at all
@@mickeymickey9914 I’m referring to how it feels kinda janky
Well I'm glad for your videos and opinion dude. I enjoyed each of these games but can definitely understand others not enjoying them.
Nier Automata, I really didn't like it at all, and I forced myself to follow it to find out if maybe I was going to like it more in the end, unfortunately it didn't happen and it only made me confirm that I don't like it 😅
You're crazy
Octopath traveler I liked the combat, but all the stories felt very selfish
drakengard i got it very cheap, i played for les than 5 minutes skiping cinematics and didnt liked because i wanted someting similar to chaos legion, i tried to rid of it selling to my circle of friends and acuantices, nobody wanted, i return home along with the game, tinking to put in the shelve and forget about it, then one day i hear incredible dialogues, crazies characters, and then voices of children dying, while my brother were playing, i then forget about, the bad things and only could see the fact that i can play as a psicopat prince with a party of freaks without redemption. and love it
Aww man i loved FF Type-0, that ending had me in tears
Combat is very fast paced and engaging, and the soubtrack is hype
Wish the HD port was a little more high budget like Crisis Core Reunion though, it deserved it
I can fully understand Ni No Kuni.
Final Fantasy Type O. Going to try and play it again tonight!
I hope you really get into it, its such a fantastic game once you figure out which character gameplay you mesh with, and the story is so good imo
@@dannisprinkles9243 It's really great. Did all missions on hardest difficulty with mostly Ace and Rem.
@@kupomogli skill issue
The humor in your videos is always spot on man! Crackin up!
I’m currently buying all the trails games but I haven’t even started a single one. Hope I don’t regret it.
I didn't care for Earthbound either.
Added in new game plus so when you finish 1 story you can carry over items, abilities, levels, and a bunch of stuff to a new story so when you recruit those characters again they already are as bad ass as you had them before
I'd say it's worth the effort and I'd even buy you a copy so you don't waste your own money just in case you still hate it.
You are not alone. The worlds depths is one of many reasons why FF 12TZA,15 and Type-0 are my favorites.
Fun fact:
In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep to get the full story you need to play all 3 characters and a 4th ending story.
Terra being the worse to control so your dodge a bullet there.
And I believe that is regarded as one of the better titles in the saga
Cheers.
Same here with nino kuni. It has charming world and characters. But there's something about the combat that just didn't do it for me.
Lufia 2 and Earthbound were dope! I had a lot of fun with Saga Frontier back in the day.
Well I can say I gained one thing from this video. An extreme desire to play Baroque which I have already indulged myself in and im loving it.
type-0 is one the best if not the best game on the psp at least on my opinion. if crisis core make you emotional at the end, type-0 does that too but multiply that by twelve. i like CC but i always thought that zack is like dumb kid for the most part, there's characters like that in type but at least not all of them are like that. i don't know, maybe i love it so much because im a sucker for games or stories that involved war and type-0 really did a good job at presenting of what could war have effect on people. and the sound track, zero by the bump of chicken makes me a fan of the Japanese band. all in all i think this game might be supposed to play at the right time to fully appreciate. i first play it in my younger years and with a co op buddy so yeah, i still think it's one of the best final fantasy. i just hope many consider this game a try and if still don't like it, atleast endure until you make to the summoning of the alexandra. cuz that shit is good.
Dragon Warrior was my first RPG. Loved the bell out of it.
Agreed, episode 2 is such a slog. Episode 3 is amazing though, fixes everything wrong with 2. Well worth the try..
And look up the final boss theme, Serpent that devours the horizon, it's a banger.
three-five-eight over two days yeah
358 Days…AND A HALF. That one killed me.
I couldn't get into earthbound either. Didn't like the Nino Kunis combat but, I want to give it another chance.
DQVII
Wild Arms1
Beyond the beyond
Alundra 2
Persona 1
Rhapsody
I don't get bravely default's system, don't use a turn for 3 rounds then attack for 3 times damage. Or you could just get through the entire game ignoring the system completely and act every round.
1:34 What I thought about the 86: eighty Six anime (except that I finished it and liked the final part)
3:35 Trails of Cold Steel sin (except that it is a main arc)
5:19 this JRPG would have work much better as a manga or as an anime. Just look at these scenes (5:34)
8:03 Sexual tension with Dragons: the series
16:33 Those are your reasons of why you consider KH an overrated series.
The game who dissapointed me the most was Mass Effect Andromeda (not a JRPG I know). Mass Effect trilogy is my fav gaming series.. so imagine how I felt about Andromeda.. issues.
I was Totally the opposite with Type - 0...I thought i was going to hate it and after I learned to the battle system, it became one of my favorite final fantasys of all time
As a JRPG lover, I've tried over and over to like Kingdom Hearts every single one of them did little to nothing for me.
I kinda wish I could like story telling that we see in Kingdom Hearts as then I would never be unsatisfied with any story no matter how poorly written.
The first game's story is great and very memorable. Eerie too.
Then it became convoluted for the hell of it and I like convoluted sagas.
for me, its star ocean series. Not because the game is bad, but it just doesn't click for me
Thank god someone tells the truth about Kingdom Hearts series!
He's the angry only in japan video game nerrrddd.
Where was Time and Eternity? Or have you come around on that now? It does have a great art style
It always feels like I'm betraying the JRPG community when I say this... I just can't get into Octopath Traveller or the entire 2DHD genre. I should love it, those JRPGs it's paying homage to are exactly the kind I grew up playing.
I couldn't get into it either. The lack of character interactions and connections between the eight stories turned me off.
Have you played triangle strategy? I say it has a pretty engaging story and good gameplay.
I almost fell off my chair when you put Dragon Warrior on there. Insert the Greta "How Dare You" meme here lol
I just miss when KH was actually about Disney and Final Fantasy. I have to go back to Pepperidge Farm.
The boss rush is optional, you can skip through to the final boss.
i feel the same about earthbound and persona 1
maybe if i was alone in one island with energy and this 2 games only...
nah i propably would just watch the sea or sleep.
I’m gonna give type-0 another shot later this year but I couldn’t get into it when it first released.
Its 100% worth your time, it is such an underrated gem
Kingdom Hearts : same, hyped by the concept, cold shower for difficulty it should have had an easy difficulty for children.
I found the PS1 version (translated) of Baroque way better than the PS2. It's way more darker and atmospheric.
There's games I don't like n games I didn't like as much as everyone else, those are quite a lot of games as well
I don't know why I was so amused, but I smiled at his cringy joke at 12 minutes
Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, and Golden Sun are all popular games that I thought were okay, but couldn't really get into. Beyond that, I couldn't stand Star Ocean: Second Story. I can at least see the appeal in the others, but I'm baffled as to why people love SO2 so much.
