I'm no afficiando..but saw this guy live and realized that all the other saxophonists I'd seen uptil then wasn't even in the running..one of the few artists to give me goosebumps and actually made me listen for the full hour and a half set...one of the greats

I listen some amazing stuff, there is nothing Carter can’t do with his horn. Back to Getz though I enjoy my hearing and a softer sound. But nobody amazes like Carter, serious training and imagination.
Razorsharpedge Agree! And funny you mention Django; the recordings of him playing at campground jam sessions at the 2015 Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival are worth watching. Try searching: "james carter #1 samois camping 2015"

I've never really loved that in ever solo he plays he uses every trick he has... but lord does he have absolute total command of the instrument, perhaps more than anyone in history. I just want to hear him play one solo straight up one day haha
Monsieur CARON none of us will forget the shock & surprise of Uzeb in Zapata's Lounge Halifax 1982 - I came looking for Carter doing theme from film Winter Meeting with his trio, then saw this was your upload and had to investigate! regards to you and PS this big band is mixed beautifully outdoors - whatever became of your incredible FOH engineer, with whom we spoke in club 35 years ago?
Looking at these sophisticated player in comment telling how jame carter style is ‘unsophisticated’. JC up there playing on stage , and touring his musician life while these armchair musician complaining, oh well the irony
@Mr. Octobass I don't think he's "unsophisticated" in his approach to music. He's just in terrible taste. Furthermore, his solos have no shape. He's constantly grandstanding. I hear no real sincerity in his playing. And he's not the only saxophonist in Jazz history who's guilty of this. Earl Bostic was another incredibly gifted saxist (perhaps even more so than Parker) who had lousy taste and made an entire career out of grandstanding and show-boating. Illinois Jacquet did a shit-load of grandstanding but he could also play beautifully crafted solos. Roland Kirk as well.
It's hilarious how many "experts" are under the impression that someone gives a toss about their opinion about James Carter or any other musician or artist that is doing what they want to do. Those keystrokes could have better been used writing your own memoir. FOCUS.
Every now and then he plays wonderfully, but even at his age he just *can't resist the fucking showboating.* Somebody should tell him to stop the goofy shit and EDIT HIMSELF. Even Illinois Jacquet didn't do all of that clowning.

Yes, he's a great Saxophones.
I love how the guitarist was completely enthralled with JC’s playing. I think he’s the best saxophonist of all time, alive or dead
Mr. Carter is an exception to the jazz world's rules , & I approved this message.🔥🎷
Mr. Carter is from another atmosphere!! Wow! Love this guy!!
I love me some James carter! he is the real deal!......no imitation, authentic!
0:40 is the best effect in the world
I think he is channeling Ben Webster with that puff sound.
If this guy can't make you love the sax, then nobody can.
Complete and utter command over his horn.......he thinks it; he sounds it. Bloody brilliant.
Great player ! ...Love the Lawton mouthpiece.....
Amazing musician. Very cool guy. Love the way his humorous, cheeky side pours out through the bell of the horn.
Swing my freaking tail off...mother-of-God that was genius!
The first tune on "Sonny Stitt with the Oscar Peterson Trio".
Such a good tune! Every song from that album is great.
What a high killing pitch note James! Greeting from Jazz man, Kuala Lumpur.
This man has the best dance moves.
nice version of that old tune
Le meilleur de James Carter,je ne me lasse pas de le réécouter .
@3:36 Mad "Fascinating Rhythm" quote, James Carter is the man :)
Sempre achei James Carter acima do "estratosférico". O sax é simplesmente um tubo nas mãos dele, ele faz o que quer, o que sua mente quer. Magnífico!
this guy is amazing
3:38 fascinating rhythm :p
Qué hacés escribiendo en inglés? jajja saludo

Well, good idea! I'd do the same, but I'd have to go fish it back from the canal first!
Don't. Just do whatever it is Carter DOESN'T do, which is tell a story with your horn.
Timothy Lee same here bro😂
I listen some amazing stuff, there is nothing Carter can’t do with his horn. Back to Getz though I enjoy my hearing and a softer sound. But nobody amazes like Carter, serious training and imagination.
James Carter is the Django Reinhardt of now. He plays with such freedom and verve. Unpredictably improvising I rate him with the best ones.

也不给我伙计们几个镜头,是因为这是他个人团队拍的,牛逼个人秀哈哈。
Looking at these sophisticated player in comment telling how jame carter style is ‘unsophisticated’. JC up there playing on stage , and touring his musician life while these armchair musician complaining, oh well the irony
Too much flash and dazzle and minstrelizing. He can't play a coherent solo, which is why he resorts to all that off-the-wall jive.

Hi guys, Iam from Brazil, what the mouthpiece his is using?
Geoff Lawton BB custom
Show biz with chops.
Lol he looked very worried about his reed at the beginning of the video 😂
I've heard that Carter smash a couple of reed each one show
What arrangement is this?

It's Not Me Who you want 💋👀🖤😊
find me one accomplished musician who actually likes this guy
Joshua Redman. Or is he not accomplished enough?
this style cannot be rendered without reverb! the mic is dry & this basically leaves James sounding flat
No reverb needed.
Tem boca não o cara regasssa kkk
An imitation Earl Bostik
Yes, him and Lockjaw
Every now and then he plays wonderfully, but even at his age he just *can't resist the fucking showboating.* Somebody should tell him to stop the goofy shit and EDIT HIMSELF. Even Illinois Jacquet didn't do all of that clowning.
Who is the trumpet player?
It’s like poor James Carter now lol at least he has Jackie Chan
if only there was a transcription
+Blake Bradley Use your ears :) May be grueling at first but each one you do after will get easier, it's worth it, good luck!
