3 billion 💵 for 1.3 miles of elevated track in 2023 that won't get completed until 2025? I don't call that a milestone, I call that a travesty 😢 You aren't even providing new service just enhancing what was already there. A milestone would be building new lines. Or making the lines more interconnected so that the user can travel on them without going through downtown. Now that would be a *Milestone*
I think with Transit operations being such a complicated task, and being extremely skill intensive... It makes sense to fix servicing that already exists to gain skills before building new servicing, and also, these tracks are quieter, which make them more appealing to neighborhoods to want to invest money to build them. So, it's kind of a first step to getting something done in the future, and I think it's good.
In my country we built 21km extension for metro and it took 12years. So your 2km part for 2 years is really normal. Transit projects shouldnt be built in attitude "something here fast" they should be planned, tested and done well, so its effective and safe also in the future. Fixing the infra afterwards to meet new plans requirements is much more expensive and takes lot more time than to do it well once. Our local politicians wanted to cut money from the project like 50mil. Where now we have problem that ridership is rising faster than thought and because they cut money from the project some of the stations are now too short for future bigger trains and it means that all those stations need to be closed and no traffic can go thru these tracks at somepoint when they need to make em bigger and its gonna cost around x3 more. The longer it takes the better the outcome and its less time off from future projects.
It helps the service of the line by modernizing it to at some point accommodate 10 train cars at platforms and also adding more trains to the line increasing efficiency and speed. This line was notorious for constantly stoping and trains going slow because of the 100 year old infrastructure. I’m sure new lines will be built in Chicago eventually being it’s constantly evolving.
@@iwouldliketoorderanumber1b79 They are extending the red line over the next few years and adding 4 new stops so they are doing extensions and remaking the tracks to improve service and extend it to new neighborhoods
I lived near Bryn Mawr station when this project just started. Now I moved outta the town and am glad to see it’s finished. How time flies but my heart is always in Chicago!
This particular stretch North of Wilson, of the 4 tracks (Red line local; Purple Line Express) WAS NOT steel viaduct; it was a concrete, iron and earthen back-filled elevated embankment! An Embankment that was in a terrible state of disrepair & condition!
there's enough steel throughout the city that probably won't be replaced, but the concrete is more efficient. there's a good balance of both in my opinion
Fixes tracks making them brand new, people that didn't watch the video complain that the tracks are over 100 years old; then complain that they should wait 100 more years, when they complain they want newer tracks. Problem is that in this generation with Tik Tok, videos have to be 3 seconds, or people don't have to patience to watch the video.
Then that would be stupid planning to wait another 100 years for it to fall apart on you and cripple service on a line with the highest ridership in the city.
@@debrh.b well they are rebuilding the redline to increase speeds and to add more trains to the lines for faster service. Would love for Chicago to add a new line but I think the smart thing first is to refurbish the existing system first. It’s just hard to do anything with the loop because trains have to wait for other trains to cross in front of them so I think once you hit the loop that will always be slow. We have to continue to be a competitive city and it all starts with a robust transit system. We will get there.
There needs to be more and more lines built! Chicago became what it is because of its elevated trains! More transit means a more prosperous Chicago!
Oh im so Glad this is

i dont like theyre removing the iconic steel. the concrete lacks the same character. smh

The concrete makes trains sound like an airplane
Steel is good and historical, but too loud for people to live there and harder to take care of it
Transit in Chicago a joke,100 years old,why not wait another 100
