Here, Brian is clearly pulling what we call a “Bookman's Bluff.” The caterpillar is quite obviously not actually a caterpillar, but instead a metaphor for Kirby
Perfectly applied
D:
You just calling him “Brian” feels so wrong in a way I can’t explain
No one knows where Kirby's from or where he's headed, all he does is eat, he transforms after eating, and he can't do long division, sign petitions, pay with a check, or become a beekeeper.
*bookworm's bluff
This song really spoke to me.
I believe this ballad represents humanity’s core elements; elitism, growth, and pointlessness. Both the caterpillars and Brian represent a different part of humanity’s struggle.
On the one hand there’s Brian, who believes he is superior to these beings known as “caterpillars”. We can tell this based on the verse where he criticises caterpillars for being unable to perform basic human tasks such as long division. This symbolises humanity’s desire for superiority, and their general elitist mindset and disregard for other species.
On the other hand, the caterpillars symbolise both pointlessness and growth. It is stated that caterpillars don’t know where they are going and where they are from, and this general cluelessness means they are without purpose. This directly aligns with humanity’s constant search for knowledge, and our inability to have definitive proof of our origins or where we go after death. Despite this, the caterpillars show that happiness can be found in pointlessness, and that growth is possible in any condition. Despite their lack of knowledge of their surroundings and their general vulnerability, the caterpillars are happy to eat and sleep.
Finally, the caterpillars indicate a desire to become something more. They metamorphasize and Brian indicates his frustration that he can’t do the same through his attempts to compare himself to the caterpillars.
Brian and the caterpillars, though seemingly conflicting points of view in existence itself, are both an allegory for the human condition and how if we seek satisfaction it will never be found. These comparisons lead me to see this video as the great piece of literature that it is.
Too bad this video is not a metaphor.

Fun fact! Caterpillars retain some degree of memory after being liquefied during metamorphosis. Some sick twisted scientists tested this by hurting caterpillars while a tone played and after being reduced to primordial goo in the chrysalis to become a butterfly, they still freaked out when the tone played. So they do have some idea of what's going on sometimes! Just a fun science fact

Well, it probably needs to remain in one piece, and solid.
Unless...?"
Later:
"So it turns out that brains do not need to be solid to remember things."
Wait do caterpillars actually get reduced to primordial soup in the chrysalis? I thought they retained some semblance of form inside, also insect brains are already weird nervous system wise
@@SignalRaptor_ basically, the caterpillar forms its chrysalis essentially “shedding its skin” in a sense, and from there it releases enzymes that literally dissolves unneeded muscles, organs, and it’s digestive system, leaving behind basically only essential functions like airways, some of its brain, and a few other cells. it then starts making these disks that use the nutrients from the digested caterpillar to create their new form, and the cycle is complete. so yes, if you caught it at just the right point and sliced it open you would find primordial soup, but technically it doesn’t dissolve everything in its entirety.

They're innately driven to go the right way, but we have no way of being in their tiny brains to know if they have any damn idea why they're going that way. They are still very silly and unrespectable guys.

Sick
So... you're saying they DO know what's goin' on?
@@devforfun5618 The proof I heard (which is almost certainly incorrect) that it's more like true memory is that one species of butterfly fly over one of the Great Lakes, but inexplicably take a huge detour over the middle of the water. a simile is a type of metaphor
@@drewsclues8625 no, a simile is a simile
hello brother
@@DragonWinter36 A simile (/ˈsɪməli/) is a figure of speech that directly compares two things.[1][2] Similes differ from other metaphors by highlighting the similarities between two things using comparison words such as "like", "as", "so", or " than",[3] while other metaphors create an implicit comparison (i.e. saying something "is" something else).[1][4] This distinction is evident in the etymology of the words: simile derives from the Latin word similis ("similar, like"), while metaphor derives from the Greek word metapherein ("to transfer").

I've always said that a well known author should write a book called "There is no deeper meaning, this is all literal and for fictional entertainment", and this is the closest I've seen anyone come! Thanks Brian!
There kinda is a short story meant to satirize this kind of obsession with symbolism and metaphors, it's called "Signs and Symbols" and it's about a couple whose son is in a mental institution because he's convinced everything in the world is trying to convey some hidden message to him, and the entire story is full of weird things that could be interpreted as symbolism but are actually just random and don't have any intended meaning.
I'm currently reading Catch 22, and while if you read the whole thing there are themes and stuff, individual chapters are just nonsense but somewhat fun

This is a absolutely amazing and complexly contemplative metaphor for capitalism, truly wonderful work.
Me after playing Kirby
The tragic dramatic irony of the video is that their place in the brutal hierarchy brought about by late stage capitalism is determined entirely by the inheritance of their parents, and none of us, no matter how exceptional, can escape a life of wage slavery unless we are born into gargantuan wealth and privilege, like our friend Brian David Gilbert. Our only hope is to join together, and use our army of bees to fight against the powers that bee and seize the means of production. This will, of course, never happen: the caterpillars are blissfully ignorant to this cruel, cruel reality, and as the ruling class, humans in this case, have valued short term profit over our environment for decades upon decades, the revolutionabee syndicalists who our the only ones that can reclaim our freedom are dropping by the second. One must also consider that the bees who are still alive, are owned by the ruling class, clearly depicting the states monopoly on force, and the God-like power this gives to the billionaires that the state itself works in the interest of.
this is objectively the best comment on this video
I thought it was a metaphor for us humans not understanding the purpose of our lives but can you please elaborate on why you think it is about capitalism?

Now my brain is attempting (unsuccessfully) to imagine what a collaboration between the two would be like...
Wait, what is this referencing?
@@BaronessCaroline you mean like which song of Cicierega's does this remind OP of?
this song is musically fascinating, and I'd like to see a caterpillar try singing it
I sent an mp4 of this video to my english teacher as something for in class analysis. He spent 10 minutes breaking down the first 15 seconds, but then the “this song is not a metaphor” hit and we watched the rest in total silence.
that's the funniest thing I've ever heard
Thank you for this comment, I laughed out loud.
that's hilarious
It's true i was the mp4
@ can confirm, I'm the first 15 seconds of the song
I can’t believe he actually became a keeper of bees three years later
Reasons why caterpillars aren’t respected members of society:
- Can’t be bee keepers
- Can’t do long division
- Can’t pay taxes
... I always knew I would never be a respected member of society but I could never put my finger on why... but I see now. I guess I'm a Caterpillar
- Can't do that spreadsheet... thing
ADHD havers called out with that line
When you said "This is not a metaphor" my brain went into deep think mode trying desperately to discern the millions of metaphors I was currently being exposed to.
It's a metaphor for metaphors!

Is this on spotify? Id like to add it to my "non metaphors" playlist
I am very interested in what else is on that playlist
Probably most Evillious songs would go there as well
3 years later and a caterpillar has yet to conceive what it will be in 3 years, while BDG is out here keeping bees
I thought way too hard about how this ISN'T a metaphor and now I'm having an existential crisis. S-Tier content as always Brian.
@Joshua EdwinRoehl 💤
Maybe it's just not a metaphor in the literal sense of the word, but is still figuratively a metaphor
@@toddrichards5566 i think it’s about caterpillars
Big Louie Zong energy from this whole video, from the 3D to the musical styling
I was thinking the same thing! My first thought was "is this a Louie Zong colab?"
@@DrPumpkinz they already have a collab. It’s called thumbnail on Louie zhong’s channel. If you haven’t already heard it. GO RN.
WHY ARE YOU READING THIS I SAID GO.
Yes! They've collab before in fact.
And the songs that came out of it was pretty jamming

I want an extended cut of this song, it’s so catchy.

I've watched this upwards of six times
Yeah
@@idbeapunk ive watched it at least 50 times at this point, im addicted
Five months left Brian.
He did it holy crap

We absolutely need an extended version
at 0:23 you can hear faint voices in the background going to the end of the song. I have spent months deciphering this mystery lyric, and have uncovered the truth. It’s just “this song is not a metaphor” repeated over and over again
I went there, and listened, and it was so creepy. I wouldn’t have been able to figure out what it was. How did you?
One month left, Brian
he kept his promise
There’s actually theories that insects can have genetic memories so there’s a chance that caterpillar knows exactly what’s going on and still chooses not to be a bee keeper because caterpillars are menaces to society
Finally! A song taunting Lepidoptera while they're caterpillars. We already have Reading Rainbow taunting them as butterflies. Now we have the 1-2 punch to really hurt their feelings.
Imagine just being a motionless sack hanging off of a branch, absolutely pathetic, have fun getting melted and reformed again, bozo
@@AV_Action how dare this gem be hidden in a reply
Ah yes, another video to lower our guards in the upcoming surreal and mind breaking horror
Bold of you to imply this isn't horror.
Thank you, Brian, you have proven your self as a bee keeper, and our souls have been put to rest.
The editing in these videos is always some kind of cross between a fever dream and an actual dream.
It's two levels of fever dream bellow Bill Wurts to be exact.
@@ahumanb3ingthatexists67 that’s a very accurate description
I adore how the editing is so detailed for absolutely no reason
i cant put into words how much i want a longer version of this song
same.... same... I can't get enough of the chorus
Two months, ten days.
Why does this go so hard, *why is this exactly my taste in music*
This song gets progressively more groovy as it continues and I love it so much
This song is clearly a metaphor for what it feels like when you're crying in your car at 3 am in a dollar general parking lot in the midwest because you desperately miss when you were 16 and had hope for the future.
Or so you've heard?
You had hope for the future at 16?
@@caiomaida3630 yes because I'm stupid.
@@Release_the_Bees Ah. That makes sense.
I didn't have that at 16. Probably because I'm a caterpillar. I had no f**king idea what was going on.
This song is clearly a metaphor for what it feels like when you bite into a pickle that's a little squishier than you expected.
Brian you got a month, hope you're keepin mate.
Correction, Six Days
