Depends on how big the shared inventory is, it would streamline things if they have the combined space of two players, but could also be a bit of a restriction if it's one regular inventory space shared between two people.

To prevent a runaway, maybe have a set of 8 easy objectives, 8 medium, 8 hard, 1 final. You can only do 2 of each set and only get access to harder objectives when you do 2 of the previous.
