This was such a great conversation really. Thank you for your stream, I wish I had caught it live and could have read the chat and participated. I really enjoyed listening though. It seems like the pressures to conform to societal norms in terms of gendered roles/stereotypes hurts everyone, and probably the doll community would be wider if people didn’t exclude themselves from it due to internalized stuff and valid fears of being ostracized- or worse. This is sad, because those of us in the doll community know there is a warm population here to embrace a diverse population. Even as a cis woman, I have become sensitized to the various experiences males must have. Aside from dolls, I have a few 1/6 “figures” that I collect and joined social media groups to learn tips on customization. Those groups are more male dominated, and there is a real stigma as far as you do NOT call them dolls. They are dolls in every way, as far as I am concerned. And some people who call them this are met with derision. I believe that is because the difference is a very gendered thing. Also, having a girl’s name in a male space- I’ve encountered kind and helpful people, but definitely some chilly energy. So mostly I just lurk. I don’t feel welcomed. I would hope the doll community doesn’t feel that way to anyone of any gender.
I understand and agree with you, I also think that they way CIS males feel in doll hobby may be akin to how CIS females feel in the Gunpla hobby. I believe the more exposure and discussion of how all peoples feel will open individuals minds enough to where all will feel welcomed whole heartedly
Really love this topic coverage. I think there are a lot more men open to the hobby overseas. Here in the states it’s tough to be open about this if you’re male, esp as the years go by if you know what I mean. A lot of what Cory had to say was very spot on regarding the burden male enthusiasts in non-Asian countries face, and a lot of the times is why some of us are more reserved in public. Growing up it was all about putting on a certain front to look cool. Then u go to college and get the grades to get a job that is virtually impossible to bring the hobby up given few social circumstances and positions associated with certain professions. I hate sounding vague but it’s reassuring being recognized and not feeling alone anymore
You make a lot of good points and I agree, I hope this discussion will help other male collectors know they aren’t alone for feeling the way they feel.
