- I met Darryl panhandling in Toronto, Canada. He has been homeless on and off since 2007. Sadly, Darryl aged out of foster care with no place to go. Even worse, that is the norm not the exception for many young adults in North America.
Although reports vary, since at best any homeless data is a good guess, one report I read this morning states [bit.ly/nGWlt4] in the United States, up to 50% of former foster youth become homeless within the first eighteen months of emancipation. Twenty seven percent (27%) of the homeless population spent time in foster care. In California, 65% of youth leaving foster care do so without a place to live. That is just unacceptable! I would bet Canadian foster care youth statistics are similar.
I was really shocked how people just kept walking by us. The few that turned only did so because they were curious why I had the camera. Darryl said "you get used to it", yet no one should have to "get used to" being ignored.

@75tm400 if panhandling is made illegal you'll pay $250 a day to keep a person in jail. If you give money or not you pay for people who live on the streets. The most cost-effective solution is housing with support services. The solution to end panhandling is not arresting people but ending homelessness
@elainebmack thanks for the comment. Actually, we are all human & I don't judge people for walking by. People could be busy, or social norms, or just cannot sit with someone else's pain. Only a very small few have a cold heart. And yes, it has occured to me people tried to help but got burnt. I often get hurt by hurting people. Often I want to quit. I do understand more than you know

He sounds like a nice guy. He was just raised in foster care and kicked out as a teen..... This is a repeating story in these videos! FOSTER CARE. Are there any good ones that actually help the children??
These cases are the ones that pull at my heart, just like kids whose parents abused them, pimped them out, etc. It's true, there should be some kind of transitional care structure in place for these young adults (instead of paying for refugees to come into the country and sponge off everyone when there are only so many resources to go around) until they "find their feet." Problem is, their problems are so deep-rooted and pervasive that there is no easy fix. Good foster parents are often demoralized and disillusioned by the reality of fostering and the kinds of "baggage" these children come with. Many have problems you'd need several lifetimes to overcome...God bless them all.

To be blunt, there is probably more to these stories... I have had friends in foster care - and most of them stay with their foster family when they age out, and got to college, etc. like any normal family. Unless, they are troubled kids who cause a lot of problems.
Like, I hate to judge using a small detail and without knowing much about this kid - But, he is already a father..
But he was 18 .. foster care isn't a life long burden for the nice people that took care of him for all those years up to 18

Their parents failed them, not the foster system. Most countries don't have a foster system. You need an address that's the law! When age out the system should
help these kids land a job and an apartment. Help them search for an apartment before they kicked them out.
@@selinahester1163 When I was a teacher, we always had some foster kids, and every one them had a nightmare story about their foster "parents." In addition to nightmare stories about their real parents. The foster care system is not good. I know there are some wonderful foster parents, but too many do it as a job, warehousing kids for the paycheck.

I think there should be a social service in which homeless people can take showers at least every other day. Good hygiene and clean clothes goes a long way to impressing potential employers.

But you need more things than that to get a Job, something basic you need to have a place to live, unexpired identity document ,telephone contact,etc
Canada has an insane amount of social services. They get free cell phones even.
You just have to be sober for an evening.

It's not about social services. These people are mentally destroyed from a bad upbringing. No amount of free stuff is going to help them. They're abusing substances and living in a victim mentality.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Everyone has a sad story to tell. Just sit down and take the time to listen to a homeless person...sending every homeless person prayers an to be safe.

Thank you for doing this. So sad that this is happening. As I am working at downtown Toronto, I also see many panhandling and ignore them. I thought why they do this and not working but I know now. Government has to do something on this.
sometime i wonder if it makes any sense when i complain about stupid things...i don't know why, but i feel like i'm rich even having nothing.
Christine, It seems it is not such a bad idea to ignore them, since this young fellow admits that he makes more money panhandling than in a job. Now when it would be the other way around, he actually might want to make something out of himself. Not just say he wants a job, but actually get one. Now he is too busy trying to make people give him something for doing nothing at all, but they had to actually go to school, get that job, get out of bed early, commute back and forth, etc.
This is the single greatest channel on RUclips. It most definitely opened my eyes.

This poor young man is a bright person, sure hope he gets a chance on having a good life soon, it's such a waste for him being homeless, no one should go thru this.
Major changes need to be made in the foster care system. All children in foster care should be taught a trade: welding, electrician, auto mechanic, professional cook, etc. If they are especially gifted, send them on to school for nuclear physics or pre-law. So many of the people you interview are homeless because of flaws in the foster care system.

The way that children in foster care are treated is absolutely DISGRACEFUL. Unfortunately, Darryl's story is very common. These poor kids have been failed miserably. The foster care system needs to be shut down. These kids are better off in orphanages. Smh
Well "damn lies" (intesting name...), You obviously do not know how dreadful many orphanages are. Foster care is much better. Of course there are always bad foster homes among the many good ones. But do you think children get better chances in orphanages, where absolutely no one cares and where the toughest and meanest kids rule over and continually bully and abuse the other children? And then for certain no one is there to help the slightest, when they get to be 18 years old.
I can honestly say after almost 25 years in the foster care system, that a LOT of kids are nice and accept your help and efforts and will gladly be helped along after their 18th birthday. Foster families do not let them down, they keep being regarded as family.
BUT there are also some that cost so much trouble, stress and heartache, that the whole family is relieved when they finally move out and all are looking forward to that day. Some young people are extremely selfish. People do not like to feel abused and taken advantage of. Not even foster families.
Some young people in foster care don't give a shit about their foster families. When they age out, they burn the bridges behind them voluntarily. Those are the first to find out the world at large is not waiting to serve their lazy beings.
They didn't want to care, they didn't want to help out others, they didn't want to do anything but have fun on other people's costs. They constantly complain about everything. Those are the ones that couldn't be helped and never will be helped. Maybe one day they will sit in the mess they made of their lives and be honest enough to consider the many troubles they made for others. Maybe then they will force themselves to learn. Until then they are a nuisance for all who have to deal with them. Too selfish to make a life.
These children have failed their foster families DISGRACEFULLY. Those poor families have been treated miserably.
I know this sounds harsh, but it is a sad reality that almost all foster families that have been around long enough have to go through. This story I told to help you gain some balance and perspective. The coin has two sides.
And yes, there will always be nice kids that are deserving of more help than they are getting. So I do not take that away. But many of these young grown-ups aren't nearly as nice as they portray they are. Some just reap what they have sown themselves.

It's not enough for governments all over the world to keep kids in foster care then let them loose to look after themselves with no support in society, at 18 most people don't have the emotional and financial ability to totally support themselves and be totally alone. They should put these adolescents into programmes that put them into at least apprenticeships or traineeships and a secure safe place to stay for approx. 4-5 years until completion so they have some skills and experience to support themselves with more confidence.
The foster parents should be thanked for taking care of him up to 18.. not looked down on.
18 is the age an adult should be able to take care of them selves. Maybe the foster parents took in a younger needier kid after he left.

Let's see... the minimum wage is $14.00/hr. He says he does better than minimum wage. So he sits next to a sidewalk and pulls in 14x8 hours=$ 112 per day. Not too shabby.

And the guy is right, employers don't receive homless people very welll, he still has a soul, he will make it i hope, ive seen many who are just dead inside, empty, life, circumstances, drugs to deal with circumstances, and no energy or pride to rise, and that really sucks...

It's not just big cities. I live in a small southern town, with 2 prestigious colleges, lots of wealth, and I see the people, in droves, pass by the homeless without a glance, much less any financial help. They're too busy pursuing pleasure to stop and give a person in need a single dime. It makes me mad and sad.

It's hard to get into college if you don't have an address. He's right about that. You don't have an address, you don't have much as far as opportunities.

That seems to be a very real problem for homeless people trying to obtain work. With no address people will not even give them a chance, and I think that is just ignorant of employers as a whole. At least these people want to work unlike many I see that don't. I do not understand why local government ( as in shelter and aide agencies ) do not find some way to help with the address issue for those who honestly are trying.

Lots of help in Ontario, but the rules are strict unfortunately and waitlists. But shelters, if you get there early enough, there are lots.
Around 1:50 I found it poignant the couple taking a picture in the background. Such a chasm between them and this young man… them probly having the time of their lives and him wondering where he will sleep tonight. God bless this young man

So every single person is supposed to stop and acknowledge every homeless person? NO, people don't have to do that. People can do what ever they want. You cannot make them do that.
A lot of us barely make it to the end of the month. Sometimes it’s hard to look at pan handlers if you don’t have enough to give out.
I watch these pieces on homeless people... my throat swells and I find it hard to talk... I cry from their pain and situation...... as I finish watching the video... please god help me to help these people I say. I find myself reaching in my pocket when I see someone asking .... I am in a bad situation myself... it I am not homeless... the heat is on right now as I type... if I open the fridge.. you won’t find a t bone steak... but I dam sure can eat something... the tv is on...( I use a digital antenna)... and i am loved by a good woman... I have it all... and even when I volunteer at the local food bank...( trying to help this crappy thing of having not)... and help the homeless... I am not able to help enough... I search for the answer to solving this dilemma the world faces. If I had more money... I would help in more ways than I do now. Maybe the reason my tears roll down and follow the lines of living on my face... aren’t just the pain I know they are living... but my inability... to make a true difference

Sometimes people look away from the homeless because they have nothing to give, and they feel a little guilty because they can't help (or that they simply can't help everyone).
And you don't acknowledge the person sitting on the street because it seems to be too much to give an explanation to every single person why you're sorry, but you can't help today.
More people do have compassion for the poor than it might seem - it's simply that most people can only give so much. God help you young man, and give you His presence, His protection, His provision, and the comfort of His promises.

@invisiblepeopletv All I'm trying to say is people that panhandle and don't offer anything in return like playing a musical instrument etc., are annoying as hell. I'm not talking about ending homelessness.I know for a fact that there are quite a few homeless people out there that choose to be that way and don't have any intrest in having a home. We have people in my own neighborhood that are like that and some of them are even my very old friends. The only time they hate it is in the winter.

Those stats are horribly unacceptable. People that can't make any more money on kids at 18 in foster care kick them out. I betcha God is so angry with those people who do that. Man he must cry for humanity too. I wouldn't do that. If I took a child in them that child is mine until they leave and if they need a place because they couldn't make it then come home that's how family's act when their kids are precious. I'm a Christian and I believe in living it out in action not just words. I hate the greed of this world. It's so self serving and runs over anyone in it's way. I have two girls who are mother's now. I would have loved to have had a boy either born from me or adopted. That's another thing adoption is so stinking expensive. It's all abt money, money, money. So sad.

An apt paid or room for 6 months an a job. And be able to get
Food stamps and clothes
Foster age outs now can get free tuition and also state housing. He needs to go to CPS and apply.
Here where I live the homeless will work corners in shifts in crews of 3 to 5.

The interviewer needs to speak in a less judgemental tone. Homeless people have enough criticism and dealing with people having a tone with them. The 3 wishes is kind of pointless its not helpful to them. Should be asking 3 things how they can be helped change the situation.

The easy jobs for homeless people to get are cleaning they will get you off the street they don't pay much minimum wage sometimes little above that but at least you can get off the street maybe cheap motel or live with someone pay room bord

Foster care from these videos seems to be no better than the conditions they came from. Some of the ppl who take in kids are just looking for an easy paycheck. Its so sad.
that ain no way to live but is 1000 times better than being homeless in my country, here in central america the people never offer food to homeles people, never give em money or blankets and almost all of em go crazy in short time i cant imagine sleeping on these streets where people can just beat the shit out of u with no reason
Well he's not a drug addict. Eyes clear as a bell. Posture good. System failed him from the get to, and will punish him throughout life because of his good for nothing parents
