- Saturday Night Live has been a staple in comedy for over 40 years. With a long list of heavy hitters that have come through the doors of Studio H at 30 Rock, SNL has maintained a level of success never seen in another sketch comedy show. Though one of it's most successful alumni, Adam Sandler, was fired after just a few short years on the show. Leaving SNL behind, Adam Sandler became one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. But how did Sandler make all this possible?

Only a few comedians have supported their friends and peers like Sandler has.
Dude is a legend for that alone.
Seriously. Some of his movies come off as "This is me just having fun with my friends" and it's great
@@kasuraga No it’s not he’s the only one who will hire his untalented friends in movies
@@josephkerr2807 except all of his friends have starred in good movies outside of Sandler. Kevin James had a successful series and did some good dramatic performances like Becky. David Spade had great comedies like Black Sheep, Joe Dirt, and Tommy Boy. Chris Rock has had several TV series, a long successful stand up career, even did some decent documentaries, and most of his movies have had little to nothing to do with Sandler until recently. Salma Hayak had a long successful career before Sandler as well and acted in several Mexican movies and shows, then showed up in Dusk to Dawn, Wild Wild West, and Dogma.
They all appeared in shit but they all have talent, their biggest problem is that they appear in shit because its financially successful. Some of them like Kevin James and Sandlet himself COULD be award winning actors, they have some dramatic chops, they just rarely put in the effort since it doesnt make them as much money, it's hard, and it's not nearly as fun but I cant really blame them. If you could get paid a fortune to go on vacation. With your family and fiends or bust your ass for less money at a less interesting job which would you do?
Right?? His group was and still is- the boys.
@@arthas640 *thank you*
I feel like Sandler's impact on this generation is sometimes underrated. He was surely in some bad (understatement) movies, but he was also in a lot of straight CLASSICS, and I don't just mean the Punch-Drunk Love's and Uncut Gems of the world. He's one of the key actors of the past few decades and I like that he's been getting more recognition for this over the past few years.
@The Wandering M Both work.
@The Wandering M Well, it should be obvious since it's the second word in the first sentence
He was not in bad movies. His critics have no talent or creativity.
Billy Madison is way better than Happy Gilmore but HG was OK too. I also liked Mr. Deeds when I finally watched it. Waterboy was great. Also his newer movies like the ones with Jennifer Aniston are awesome. All in all he can make great movies.
Dude! NOTHING about adam sandler is “underrated!” If anything, he’s the exact opposite… he’s overrated! Everybody worships the guy and treats him like a god.
He hosted SNL semi recently and did a fantastic job. On Howard Stern, Sandler basically said he wasn't rehired, but said he wasn't salty towards SNL at all years later b/c of all SNL did for him. I wouldn't say he was fired, more so he just wasn't rehired for further seasons. At the end of the day, Sandler and SNL clearly still have a great relationship and Sandler has done well. Basically the culture and times changed, and so did the cast. At the end of the day, it was a happy ending for both parties, but I personally don't find SNL that entertaining anymore and Sandler's movies are hit or miss, but he is a super nice guy, that is for sure.
I can honestly say looking back on it that the '95 cast was probably one of the most star-studded casts they ever had. Sandler, Spade, Rock, Farley, Nealon, Meadows, Sweeney, Franken, and Hartman were ALL movie stars.
And a good amount was fired lol
Don’t forget Norm McDonald.
@@mynameisnotearl4383 Norm da GOAT
Except you forgot Norm Macdonald. Jim Belushi, John Belushi.
You forgot Eddie Murphy his movies have made over 7 billion dollars. Will Ferrell
No one gonna mention Mike Myers?
Correction to your assertion about Sandler being second to RDJ in box office earnings. Eddie Murphy’s movies have made over $7 billion, worldwide. Sandler sits at about $5.5 billion. If you narrow this comparison to just domestic box office or to just leading roles, Murphy widens his margin of success.
Thank you. I searched for a comment about this. Eddie is the legend of SNL. Many have had success but... Eddie f*
I wrote this same comment after yours of course but I knew I wasn't wrong. Weird how he excluded Murphy but included Kristen who I think is great but I don't consider her a blockbuster movie star. Steve and Bill had there moments but Eddie was a bankable box office super star
Yes good correction.
@@mauricemaple1430 Julia Louis Dreyfus. If you pay attention. every sketch on SNL that Murphy did. the only good ones had her in them. She helped more than anyone realizes. Noe compare how much she has made since SNL compared to anyone else.
@@Me4-gc8qs Revising history, are you? I take it you never watched the "Best of Eddie Murphy: SNL" videos, JLD was hardly in any of them.
Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood
"Mr White" (The one where he put on white face and pretended to be a white man.)
John David Stutts--Buckwheat has been shot.
James Brown's Celebrity Hot Tub
Gumby
Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder
Those are just a few. What's the point of lying on the internet for a few virtue signaling points?
My best friends mom went to school with Sandler. Said he is exactly like he seems in his movies. A goofball in the spotlight and a cool average Namsha guy when he’s not
wow... that's sooo cool to know.... thanks for sharing this....
Namsha?
Namsha?
I have a tremendous admiration for comedians, no matter if sometimes they make terribly unfunny stuff. I feel the same about Adam Sandler, dude has had a trajectory like only few performers have had, he deserves everything because he has worked so hard for it, plus the talent he has always had.
And he got people to watch all his terrible movies until 2011 when people finally said "this guy is awful".
Ok so what was the "Real Reason" SNL had NO CHOICE but to fire him? Not only did you not reveal what you set up in the title but you were flat out talking about a totally different topic during the entire video. I am a long time subscriber to the channel and I enjoy your videos usually but this title is grossly misleading for what effectively was a mediocre video about nothing, and it has made me reconsider my subscription...
Nerdstalgic used to be one of the best media analysis channels on youtube but its definitely taken a downturn lately
Agreed. Very clickbaity
Thanks for saving me 8 mins bro👍
Right on… RUclips is killing RUclips with trash content
Lmao
The only significant birthday twin I have, Adam Sandler was really big in our house. My mother is a huge fan of SNL so I grew up watching reruns of them on VHS tapes and he was always my favorite. I probably shouldn't have been watching all of his movies as a small child, like Little Nicky(which is actually one of my favorites) but I could quote Mr. Deeds, The Waterboy, Billy Madison, etc all day long. He's a comedic legend and a really chill guy.
What I got from this vid: Adam went through tough times; however, he never stopped doing what he loved. Says a lot about him
You included Steve Martin in the list of SNL cast that Sandler has out-earned, but Steve Martin has never been an SNL cast member.
He also forgot Eddie Murphy, who was an SNL cast member and whose movies out-earned Sandler’s by a wide margin.
That 95 cast was absolutely insane. Just the ones you showed plus the others like Norm McDonald and Chris Rock is just an insane roster. There was definitely some personal BS going on there.
I was born in 89 so, needless to say, Adam Sandler was a HUGE part of my formative years! The funniest thing I remember is how ALL parents (literally every single one) back then would tell kids my age "Adam Sandler is such an idiot. Stupid humor, and screaming. Nobody will know his name in 5 years."
Haha! While I can't HONESTLY stand behind EVERY movie Adam Sandler has his name on in some way, I do stand by A LOT and he completely fooled everyone!
From "screaming idiot" to billionaire
This came at the perfect time. I just finished making a video on Adam Sandler and the more I learn about him, the more I realize he’s had such an interesting and unpredictable career
Am I the only one?…. Steve Martin was never a cast member of SNL. That’s what makes his impact on the show so incredible.
You are not the only one. I thought that was a bit sloppy.
I know he wasn’t, but I can understand why people think he was; as many times as he’s guested. Plus, iconic sketches, like the wild and crazy guys with him and Dan Aykroyd.
This is actually quite inspiring. This was a blessing in disguise for Sandler.
He’s definitely evolved, his old movies are a hit and miss because humor changes with time, but his recent movies have so much depth.
I'll never forget his Halloween costume improv. "Crazy newspaper face". "Gimme some candy! I want some candy! lol
I don't care what people say, Adam Sandler will always be amazing to me
Adam Sandler doing ableist screeching. So funny. Great intro. Well done nerdstalgic.
Adam Sandlers comedy is not something I enjoy but I respect him a lot as a person
He did really good in that new movie Hustle. Great film.
As my grandmother always said, "Showbusiness is designed to break your heart."
Any industry can 'break the heart' of someone working in it, or aspiring to be in it.
I had two comedy albums in my disc changer in high school and one of them was "What the Hell Happened to Me?" My friends and I would sing/recite every line. That being said, the only two movies from his comedies I can watch are Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer.
I wish he did more serious roles. Movies like Punch-Drunk Love & Reign Over Me shows he can be a great actor.
He could have appeared in a Tarantino film. Imagine how epic that would have been.
It's not too late - they are both still around.
"The Waterboy" was my favorite Sandler film.
I love and appreciate Sandler's work and support of his friends! What a mensch!
While I still like Happy Gilmore and The Longest Yard, my favourite Adam Sandler roles are the dramatic ones like The Meyerowitz Stories: New and Selected, Uncut Gems, Reign on Me, and Punch Drunk Love.
Am I the only one with visions of Adam Sadler mimicking Matthew McConaughey in True Blood, taking about "back in '95..."?
... yeah, I probably am
"Snl was only funny when I was a kid. Before that it was boring and outdated and after that it was stale"
-everybody ever
Literally. My favorite era of SNL was the mid 2000s-early 2010s, but I know my opinion is bias because that was the era I started watching the show as a kid. Everyone's opinion on which era of SNL was the best seems to be based on nostalgia.
At this point, I sincerely hate everyone who has *any* opinion on SNL. It’s never been good and it’s always aged like milk.
EDIT:
“Before that it was boring and outdated and after that it was stale”
It’s almost like plugging and chugging comedy and politics for the sake of ad revenue will never hold up over the long term, gee golly gosh 🤔🤔
I’d push back against the point where you say there wasn’t a bigger turn over in SNL history. I can think of three with bigger turn overs. Between 5-6 (79-80) and 10-11 (85-86), the cast and crews were almost completely replaced as well as well as Jon Lovitz being the only cast member to survive the disastrous season 11.
1980 was the biggest turnover. The whole cast AND Lorne Michaels himself
Given the people who became more successful after leaving SNL like Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Chris Rock etc I always figured being a cast member was never supposed to be permanent to begin with unless you're Kenan Thompson.
Snl is like college. Some ppl will never graduate and get a respectful job. Most of the current cast for example
He gives back to his homies 💪🏻he’s a real dude
Just want to say that Steve Martin was never a cast member of SNL. I believe he's hosted it more than anyone else, but that's all he's ever been: a host.
He's been a part of some of the most iconic characters and skits in SNL history though. A True comedic genius, and possibly the last true Renaissance man.
He owns a Grammy, Emmy, and Oscar. Along with the Mark Twain award for American Comedy. Has been nominated for a Tony twice, and has won numerous awards for different artistic fields, ranging from Comedy, acting, writing, and music.
happy friday to everyone ✌🏼
Same to you!
It’s only Thursday for me

One of Sandler's first big gigs was on MTV's Remote Control. Can't believe they didn't mention that in this!
I can remember almost clear as day - teenage me, waking up at my girlfriends house on a saturday morning after a big night with friends... were all hung over and someone throwing happy gilmore on the VHS player in the louge.
We slowly all migrate to the lounge with blankets and pillows and someone starts cooking up a big breakfast..
We're all laughing our heads off and forgetting about our sore heads...
sitting there eating breakfast, hung over with my girlfriends head on my lap, friends all around the room, laughing so hard while we repeat classic lines - "just tap it in... tap tap tap it in"
those are the moments you remember forever... I'd give anything to be back there and live it again.... Adam Sandler absolutly shaped a whole generation.
That sounds really fun
The man made soooo much money playing the same role. I know someone on his D will address the few roles he was playing seriously. I understand that; but he’s intelligent enough to know what works. Rinse and repeat
I have always loved and admired Adam Sandler, growing up I would watch his movies and now feels super nostalgic to watch the old Sandler hits😆
Also his role on the movie Click made me cry, and that's not easy to do🥺
Best fired from SNL but returned to host opening monologue was by Norm Macdonald. Look it up, it’s awesome!
I remember him on Remote control. I basically grew up watching him, & listening to him.
I really like him in Uncut Gems. He had more skills than just comedy, which wasn't always all that funny to me.
WOW that was actually informative, not just clickbait.
By the way. Happy Gilmore edges out Billy Madison for my favorite by an eyelash.
I feel that people are overanalyzing things these days to make some money. In the 90s people disnt care about insulting dialogue that much as long as the ratings were good. It was before the dark times. The time of the empire. Theres no longer just having goofy fun.
Great video, as always!!
I think he is second in movie gross at the box office to Eddie Murphy
7:35 - Saturday Night Live granted Sandler enough recognition for someone to take a chance on him by greenlighting Billy Madison
"Now you're all in big big trouble"
Give that editor a medal.
The 1995 resignations were not unprecedented. The entire original cast , and Lorne Michaels, left after the first five seasons. Thank goodness he came back!
It would have been so weird if Farley & Sandler overlapped a season with Will Ferrell
i learned absolutely nothing from this video. can you please tell me the "real reason" adam sandler was fired?
Nah, this was just a video to stroke all of Sandler’s fans off. Needed to hit that “turn your brain off/popcorn muncher movie” demographic I guess.
Also anyone who has seen the Sandman's Netflix special, 100% Fresh knows how talented this man is. Really a perfect comedy special start to finish, easily one of my top 5 comedy specials of all time
Adam Sandler is one of my favourite actors. As a 90's kid, I grew with his films and I watched them all multiple times. Like everyone else, you can say anyline from his films, and people know the reference
I’m actually surprised that Sandler fail to notice that almost all of his companions were dismissed en mass quite suddenly, and that he didn’t consider that he’d suffer the same fate.
It's strange to think of what might have happened if Sandler hadn't been fired. No Billy Madison, No Happy Gilmore...what a weird world that would be.
Been a huge fan of Sandler since his Remote Control days on MTV! I remember seeing Billy Madison in the theatre, and feeling like I was the absolute target market for the film. This movie was quoted (along with Happy Gilmore) throughout my college days.
How did you forget Eddie Murphy when talking about highest grossing SNL actors? His numbers eclipse Sandler’s.
Adam Sandler is like the WWE to me .. not my cup of tea at all but I gotta pay respect
Holy crap that's a lot of cast members. That's what I call pulling the plug.
Actually the 80’s most cast members would only last one season before getting fire the season 6 cast from 80-81 all but Eddie Murphy and joe piscopo got fired from the show many times in the 80’s snl was in danger of getting cancelled cause at the end of the 5th season not only did whole main cast leave the show lorne michaels went with them and didn’t return to the show until the 85-86 season
“Freshe pepper!) 😂😂😂
It’s funny because Sandler, Farley and Norm were the only reasons I watched SNL at the time
90's Sandler was the best, I loved most of his movies, I loved his work on SNL and it wasn't the same when he left (along with Myers, and Farley - and whoever else). I'd say 90-94 were my favorite SNL years and I'll never forget them. The good ol'days that'll never come back...
It never clicked with me. Respect the hell out of the dude. But the whimsical tone always killed the vibe for me.
It's important to note the success of his comedy albums and how they kept Adam in the public eye after being fired from SNL.
You didnt even answer your own question? You just summed up his early career
I enjoy alot of his work from the 1990s and 2000s he is iconic
I'm a 20yo leftist and i love Adam Sandler's movies. My dad's a 57yo conservative who loves Adam Sandler's movies. They're just so stupid it's impossible to actually judge them by Hollywood and cinema rules. He's just out there and silly and has the humour of a 12yo boy who just hit puberty and god I'm here for it
I feel like the Phantom Menace trailer might have helped the Waterboys numbers a wee bit
Imagine having Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, David Spade, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Jay Mohr and Tim Meadows among others on your show and thinking it'd be a good idea to change the cast HAHA. I didn't find the last two listed that funny but they always made good supporting characters.
Adam Sandler is very popular - no doubt!
I never got him, and his work to me seemed at best "almost funny".
It's me, because everybody else seems to love Adam's work. Good for Adam Sandler!
How did you not mention Norm Macdonald getting fired during that era. His firing was the most epic fire of all.
Pretty much why I grew up like those characters lol at 39 years old, I still play in the tub and my shampoos.
Great video and research.
Adam sandler is one of those people everyone likes to hate ...but watches his movies anyways...
@6:11 Oh wow!!! I'm a HUGE Steve Martin fan. What seasons was he a cast member?
I don't recall him being on there
Adam Sandler once said that his dad wouldn't watch him on TV or go see his movies because he couldn't believe that his son got paid so much money for just acting like an idiot. He wasn't being mean, he just didn't think that it was a real job. I applaud the man for laying on the Jewish guilt trip so thick, that even his world-famous, wealthy comedian/actor child was held to impossibly high standards. I liked him in The Wedding Singer. He really plays some heartwarming roles that have the kind of guileless honesty of children. I think that's one of the things that appeals to so many people about his characters. They aren't mean or cruel or mocking, they are without the duplicity that often comes with adulthood.
Is it because Adam “Liiiiked to touch the hiney?”
Sandler was in my husbands brothers class in high school and they lived on River Road.
Morwena Banks was on SNL?!? I had no idea.
Any other UK comedians been on it?
Still don't understand why no one mentions reign on me in regards to Sandler. He is amazing in that movie.
Sounds like Dennis Miller didn't want the network to look too closely at the SNL cast, in case they made other choices.
Wow. I was not aware of Adam Sander's hot body during his time on SNL. What a treat!
That’s crazy how they fired him, and he popped out with all hit movies. His early films were his best movies in my opinion. They may have not done good when they first came out, but today they loved. I enjoyed them when I was a kid. I just wish him and Jim Carey would’ve done some movies in both of their primes. They both have that angry comedy style. I wonder why they never worked together.
When this happened, everyone I knew couldn't understand it at all.
Adam Sandler in Reign Over Me. Magnificent!
SNL never recovered from the 90's... The 80's cast was the best cast ever, and everyone has gone in to have a successful career...
How in the holy hell could the suits for NBC not like the cast that he was a part of?! Besides the original cast when they first started the show, the early to mid 90s with Sandler, chris Farley, mike Myers, Jon luvitz, and norm Mcdonald... just to name da few!!
SNL is a launching pad in America like 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbors' is in Australia
I can’t stand Adam Sandler. I respect him as a performer, and a stand up comedian a lifetime ago, but that’s about it. His act (if you can call it that) amounts to a “””challenged””” frat boy. Julia Sweeney said that back when she was on SNL great sketches were cut entirely just because “Adam wants to sing a song.”
Out of all the SNL alumni you mentioned in this video, it is very disappointing that you didn't mention Norm McDonald. He was on SNL with Sandler and was fired as well.
His performance in The Cobbler is so unappreciated!
Great video
Wait, wait wait.... The Wedding Singer wasnt his first feature film? I dont think I can be the only one thinking it was....
No matter what people say about Adam sandler, you have to respect that he found a way to do what he loves with people he cares about and you also have to respect that hey he's been a lot of movies. Sure a lot of the movies he's in are not appealing for a lot of people, but they all have a large fan base anyways. It's more of a nice crowd that loves just ridiculous hysterical crap. But sometimes he releases some really amazing films like the remake of The longest Yard and of course the films when he's with Drew Barrymore. Not to mention the hotel Transylvania films at Adam Sandler is in are also really good. I also liked hotel Transylvania 4 although yeah that's not an Adam Sandler movie He's not in that film
Being fired from Saturday Night Live was the best thing to ever happen to him
So we can thank SNL for blessing us with Adam Sandler on the big screen? One of the greatest comedy actors of his time.
I remember watching those early 90s episodes of SNL. I live in Australia and so we were usually a little behind in getting new episodes. Then they suddenly brought in the new episodes and it was like 1 week we had Sandler and the rest of that cast and the next it was an all new team who just weren't as funny in my opinion. I maybe saw a couple of episodes after that but for the most part, it just wasn't my thing anymore. I loved watching tapes of the 70s shows and had loved the early 90s era, but when that change over happened, it just didn't feel like the same show anymore. It's always strange to me to hear that in the US, it was when the likes of Will Ferrell joined the cast that things started picking up for SNL as that was when I tuned out.
