FAbulous mezzo.. too. Ponselle, is so musical and so accurate in everything she sings.. pitch, tempo... I sure would have liked to have heard her live in this role.
This is my favorite "Mira o Norma" in all the times. Ponselle is weel known, but Telva not. Somebody has a shor biography of Marion Telva. Also she deserves be reminded as a great mezzo. Juan Fernando Sanin E
This is my favorite melody. Ponselle and Telva were spectaculars. Ponselle was in plenitude and Marion too. It is a pit thar Marion Telva is now almos forgotten. jfsanin
Ponselle once commented that she and Telva stayed together in this duet by giving each other the pulse through their clasped hands during the rubato sections.
There is a "person"? down below who made a comment under the screen name, "spencophany." I cannot respond directly because his comment is too old. However, if he were going for shock value, he achieved it. What in God's name was he listening to to have the audacity to call this gorgeous duet, "horrid"? What a base, empty, ugly world he must inhabit to even THINK of writing such a thing. If he thinks there's a better version, that's his opinion, but to debase this masterpiece is beyond the pale. What an ignoramus! I truly pity him.
Because she wasn't a vocal wonder. She fell into Serafin's "Wonderful singers" category, along with Sutherland and Tebaldi. But Ponselle, Ruffo, and Caruso were the only vocal miracles in history
Flawless. Listen to the beautiful line and the incredible balance between Ponselle and Marion Telva.Geraldine Farrar once remarked that there are two singers you must put aside as the greatest, They are Ponselle and Caruso. You then may discuss all of the rest. Ponselle was a singers singer. She was a Force of Nature. Callas said of her.:I think we all know she is the greatest singer of us all. Callas would only listen to Ponselle recordings. Serafin had wanted Callas to study with Ponselle.
Ponselle tone and fiorture are fabulous. However, her high notes, sound tight to me, not flat... She didnt like singing high, and did not have much confidence in her upper register.. I suspect it was there, but .. I think her sense of artistry, made her cringe to make a loud ugly sound.. (someting i wish other singers possessed.).
This is absolutely horrid as a duet. i couldnt care less if Poselle was thought to be one of the greatest. Unu no know wat the hell unu sayin. check out caballe and verret for a perfect duet....the best harmony and euphonious blend.
Both artists singing are beautiful and subtle, the conductor does a great job too and this is the best rendition of this duet ever!

Ponselle's voice was NEVER flat.

Could someone tell me from what year is this recording?
Sublime! Only Callas and Stignani is equally good. Great art!
You are very welcome. :)
This is perfection- including the conducting. Who was the conductor? And when was it recorded?
Thank you for posting!
@Elisabetta611 Indeed I do...
The Torvill and Dean of Norma.
Ponselle was really a vocal miracle!

Vocal miracles was his translations. He was right. Brava,

kgarmaker123 What in God"s name do you mean, "She didn't like singing high?" A more bizarre remark has rarely been written.
