As someone who makes chainmail jewelry, to save your wrists, get some bend nose pillars. Also there's a ring you can wear that makes openning the rings easier. They will make your adventures move along faster and more comfortable 😊. Bravo on your first piece.
I was going to recommend the jump ring ring as well, I hope she sees this! I have no idea how they are not more popular, it also makes jewelry making generally so much easier!
I'll be looking up "jump ring ring". If that's NOT gonna work, could you yell me please what I SHOULD look up to find this? 😂 Thanks! I've really gotten into a combo of paracord and sewing and rings, and the very very natural 3rd part of my ideas is making my own chain and maille components.
Was going to suggest that too. Also as a bonus, the flatter you can keep the rings, the less likely you are to twist them, and the better you can get them to close flush. Also, There are two sites you absolutely need to have in your arsenal, Kira: The Ring Lord and Maille Artisans. I'll post the URLs in a reply, youtube has been iffy about if it'll let me post links or not. Also, a suggestion: instead of working on tables like that, what I find works best for me at least is to just press the unit flat with my thumb against my forefinger, then add the ring where it goes, do the same for the other unit with my other hand, and then let the units go and close the connecting ring. It only works for doing strips, but I find it way more comfortable and easier to get my rings flush.
As a chainmaille artist: welcome to the club!! When you get more comfy with euro 4-1, it won’t be that hard to jump to scale maille. Which I think is right up your alley… :3. The scales go in the euro 4-1 as some of the “rings” of the sheet. If you’d like to see a pattern for a bra piece (or extend it for a fitted shirt), I recommend the ring lord’s pattern. They do a good job with explaining the constrictions and expansion sections for their pattern. BUT!! I love that you’re getting into maille. Check out aspect ratios for weaves if you wanna delve deeper.
I would love to see a part two where you finish these pieces and maybe make something else like the skirt! (hopefully with the right size rings lol) They all turned out so cute and now I wanna go to a ren fair 🥲
these pieces turned out so sick!!! especially when you added the dangly chains, my crow brain went a little feral also absolutely delightful to know Tiger is a fellow Drawfee fan! she has excellent taste
I was not expecting to see her cat watching drawfee but it was definitely a pleasant surprise always fun when my favourite channels are into each other!! Also a very interesting video and was cool to see Kira’s learning process!
I adore how much your cat loves Drawfee. Also love the random Drawfee sections in these crafting videos, just a sudden jump scare of strange creatures in the middle of figuring out DIY.
I will bet you that the weird looks are more "I have never seen anything like that in person before" or "Not very practical" instead of anything actually negative. Also, those look really cool! Congratulations on making these!! I agree that a chainmail skirt sounds awesome.
WOW that looks incredible! i bet you could make a super cool red Airship Captain Coat with chainmail reinforcement on the elbows & shoulders. also those black boots could probably be spiced up with some mail spats clipped onto them.
I stopped watching you for a while because I was holding a really, really dumb grudge after I utterly failed to use one of your videos as reference for making my first ever sewing project, a corset, with a duct tape pattern I did on myself (I knew it was a bad idea at the time and I did it anyway and then held an irrational grudge) but I'm very glad to be back to watching your content, your creations inspire me
theres a market in my town with an artist that makes chainmail jewelry and i love her work, so i was really excited to see you try this! everything turned out so cool especially for your first try :D
The first and second outfit are the prettiest in my opinion the second has nice color break up and both look nice to go out in. And everyone around you would probably wonder how they could get as cool as that. You do rock the chainmail. I've never really knew how it was made so it was nice to learn from your video. Really loved this video lovely work
We are so winning with this one!! Omg the reveal shots are gorgeous. And don’t we all want to live between high elf regalia and punk diy? 🌹Elegance, Class, and Edge🗡️. Thanks for sharing this project with us!
i’ve been checking this channel nonstop for the past two hours and finally I get this gorgeous video. I am so happy thank you so much Prickly Alpaca. I love your stuff.💕💕💕💕💕💕
YES make the chainmail skirt! I love how you styled these pieces, my fav that you made was that shoulder drapey piece with all the ✨️drapey chains✨️ it's so cool
For opening rings, my favourite way was to have an adjustable wrench in a vise and grab the ring with pliers, slot it into the wrench and twist. I also crocheted pliers handles cozies when I was getting close to blisters. I also make the 4-on-a-ring but then I connect them into a string so I know how long I'm making the thing, make a lot of strings the same length, then connect them together, it works better for my pattern recogntion brain. And as someone who makes and fights in steel plate armour, the best way to incorporate it into general wear is one piece at a time, maybe the gorget or some bracers. It would have to be a real emergency before I'd try to sit in a car in full plate. It's just too pokey and pinchy, even hugging your friends gets potentially dangerous if they're not also armoured. When we do costume armour, we tend to make it out of aluminum because if we make it in steel it''ll rust all over the wearer (no fun at all) who will generally not be wearing the thick cotton gambeson we wear under battle armour, and making it in stainless is heavier and also harder to work if you're going for fine details. We did figure out that with duct tape and the English Wheel we could do some interesting texturing that can come out like a jacquard pattern.
Wow, amazing work on the chain! Everything looks great, but I especially adore the chain shirt/crop top. Thanks for once again documenting yourself diving headfirst into a new costuming craft and sharing with us! All of your looks are fabulous in this video (chainmail workout gear is a mood); always cool to see you experiment with different fits with new creations!
Yesssss. I just bought some metallic looking yarn because I want to make a knitted sweater that mimics a chainmail. I was searching for more references. The timing is timing. I love your work! ❤
I've find that doubling the rings on the edge is the easiest way to clean an edge and prevent it from flopping around too much. Cant wait for you to discover scale mail
I absolutely adore how much of your wardrobe is thrifted, makes me want to go thrifting like right this instant. I must leave and spend hours searching for cool clothes nowwww
The 2nd styled outfit is probably my favorite! I'd love to see you do a little ruching on the sides of that negligée. I think it would make it more wearable for your style and also make it fit you XD The story that the outfit made come to mind was like "Lady Knight who has been captured by misogynist villain who forces her to wear frilly clothes because WoMEN cANt Be kNIgHtS" or something like that. For the red Cherry Bomb fit, I think if you swapped the boots for some chunky black loafers and knee high sporty socks (either red or white), it would give the sportier energy you were missing. Probably my second favorite outfit!
The timing on this vid is crazy bc I just finished making a full length chainmail shirt and a coif a couple of days ago lol. I love the pieces you made and would love to see you make more!
kira's the kind of person to look at thousands of tiny little metal circles and ask "is anybody gonna make chainmail out of that?" and not wait for an answer
I never thought you would do that. ...Patience... For the first time you choose the best technique. And you did a pretty good job! For round, triangular or pointed forms I recommend the 3 in 1 technique. When you want to make your chainmail pieces lasting very long, use riveted rings.
I used to date a guy that LARPed and we would sit on the couch and make so many chains of these 4 in 1´s.... is funny to see but happy it is still around =)
This is amazing. I'm glad chainmail is coming back as a popular crafts. I tried it about 10 years ago and couldn't get my head around it but this video is making me want to try it again
Just a little helpful tip, when I'm making maille I like to work on a square piece of EVA foam so I can pin my project down as I go, thus keeping everything from moving around
This is amazing! Every piece looks so good! I have also ventured into casual chainmail territory, but I didn't really make it practical enough to wear out regularly 😬 My rings were tinier I think, making it a lot more effort to make and also heavy (nice for the weighted blanket feeling you mentioned, less nice bc it constantly shifted when I moved) - I did find out that the gorget goes nice over a sweater (as long as it's not tooooo oversized!) I will def try my hand at the crop top with the *_kilos_* of rings I still have left over!
A gorget was the first thing I made with chainmail! I somehow came up with a pattern and learn of how to round out the pattern/weave so that it was a circle. With the way I made it, the gorget hugs my shoulders and my neck. I also decided to use two different size and stainless steel. Not the brightest decision but definitely worth it
the four in one will be a bit harder with such a large aspect ratio, the best for a four in one is 4.0, lauren does a 5.0 (16swg 3/16” AR5.0 specifically). i also like to use chainmail joe, same as this video (you can see the logo in the top corner when the ring website is shown at the beginning), lauren uses the ring lord which used to all round five star reviews but all recent reviews i’ve seen have talked about their quality having gone down awfully in the last few years with rings missing chunks so they close in an oval shape and holes in scales being way off centre. i’ve found maille super easy but my friend found it terribly frustrating. her brother is now also obsessed with it so it’s not genetic
My husband makes chainmail jewelry I kept poking at him while I was watching this. The pieces all look amazing, from one maximalist to another: sparkly.. good.. (He was very impressed with how fast you got things down.) Also like.. You starting over from scratch half way through a project is The ChainMailler Way. Like magic cards, I find random chainmail projects everywhere in my house. I mean our 6 year old daughter who is just a magpie masking as a human child has a lot to do with why they're all over my house and not where he works on things.. But you know.---She comes by it honestly with me as her crow-brained artist mother..)
I would love to see you do that chainmail skirt and a either a royal blue flowing outfit like a lady of the lake outfit or a fiery red outfit like a volcano queen or on of Lilith's fire children. I love everything you do!! ❤️
YES!!! Please make more chain mail pieces. I didn’t know it came into modern times and has been jussed up…I am now obsessed and want to make things out of chain mail!!!😊
🦄I'm super excited to see future videos with 🧚♀️colored chain chain-mail outfits🧝♀️. There are also 🐉🌹dragon scales chain-mail and mermaid🧜♀️ versions. The possibilities are endless. 🌈
I actually wouldn't mind making a chainmail thing. Although...my first concern is how to make attachable/detachable pockets for said chainmail thing, lol. I'm thinking sewing a little pocket-pouch out of fabric, and then making a little chainmail sleeve that the fabric pouch sits inside comfortably and is attached to at the opening, and those jump rings at the top of the pocket are also how the pocket would attach to the larger chainmail clothing piece. (And the reason there'd be chainmail around the pocket rather than just at the top of the pocket is just because chainmail is stronger than fabric, so having the pocket be reinforced would mean that it can carry heavier stuff. Might have it be just a chainmail bottom to the pocket and then a ring around the top, with chains connecting them on the sides, but full chainmail would be stronger.) And then if you don't feel like having pockets with the piece, just take them off and jump-ring the opening closed. But...really...who wouldn't want pockets? And of course, if you want *more* pockets, just open up more pocket gaps to attach more pockets to. Yes, having pouches that attach to the outside would be more practical. ... Why not both? I should've absolutely known she would make it to chainmail one day.. She's done basically everything else in the book of knight-wear! XD
I got recommended chain mail tutorials on Pinterest and I knew Kira was up to something
😂😂😂 pinterest was like let's tease em

The crop top gives off knight vibes, but the rest of it gives off badass assassin vibes. They're beautiful. Absolutely awesome!

I love how you have incredible drip in the intro of each video

yes do please make more of these 🥺
I've found if you make a pattern out of eva foam, and lay that flat, you get an easy to follow pattern, but I haven't done chainlail in years.
These are all so amazing! The looks at the end are soooo good, and the 'sporty' one is giving very Annabeth Chase.
Amazing first video as a patron! Happy to be a part of your knightcore adventures ❤
Great video, also yes to the chainmail skirt it absolutely VIBES
I used to date a guy that LARPed and we would sit on the couch and make so many chains of these 4 in 1´s.... is funny to see but happy it is still around =)

Chainmail skirt is a major yes. I would absolutely enjoy watching you make the skirt. 😊
They turned out beautifully. Should do the skirt most definitely
Your drawings for explanations are both adorable and so so so helpful! Thank you!
i have been doing maille for a couple months now too and i am so so excited you’ve gotten into it too

Love both of those earrings with the chainmail pieces!! ❤
you did a great job and look so badass in everything!!!!!!
19:49 oh chainmail skirt hike? Saw some cute ideas on etsy
Gorgeous pieces!!! Loving the outfits! ❤😊❤
Might have it be just a chainmail bottom to the pocket and then a ring around the top, with chains connecting them on the sides, but full chainmail would be stronger.)
And then if you don't feel like having pockets with the piece, just take them off and jump-ring the opening closed. But...really...who wouldn't want pockets? And of course, if you want *more* pockets, just open up more pocket gaps to attach more pockets to.
Yes, having pouches that attach to the outside would be more practical.
...
Why not both? ALL the storage space!
(I *might* be a little of a pocket maniac, lol)
I definitely want to see the chain mail skirt. That sounds fun
the temptation I have to let you teach me how to do this...
