I wish you did Esmeralda's outfits as well, from Hunchback of Notre-Dame. I'm guessing the bare shoulders are anachronical, but the rest of the movie seemed quite rooted in reality, especially Frollo's outfit as well as some of the other gypsies, Clopin coming to mind...Phoebus' golden and blue look seemed fair as well, for something at the turn of the tide between the Middle Ages and the French Renaissance.

    • @asterismos5451
      @asterismos5451 Год назад +7

Esmerelda's corset is incredibly inaccurate; corsets didn't even exist yet. Her shirt isn't right either, since she'd either have a stiffened bodice or a kirtle. The skirt is good and so is the ribbon in the hair though she'd have worn her hair up and likely covered. Off-the-shoulder looks weren't quite in style. The necklines were a lot bigger than we have today and would have been close to falling off the shoulders some of the time, but were still worn up on the shoulders. Dunno about the men.

Cinderella you could argue for her main dress that it was conjured by magic (as was Elsa's). The early princesses definitely were made to match the fashions of the time the movies came out as a way to appeal to the then modern audiences, which I find cool in that way. And Sleeping Beauty while medieval also had a ballet feel to it in the costumes, especially with Aurora's peasant dress (I mean they did use music from the ballet).
In short, I appreciate the movies where cultural/historical accuracy was strived for, as well as the ones meant to be a stylistic, modern-inspired (at least modern then) fairy tale.

Loved it, but a correction: Sleeping Beauty is baeed on the Perrault version, so she's French. Also worth pointing out the 1800s French anthem plays when Aurora wakes up, and the fleur de lis is seen subtly in the castle, like on furniture and curtains.
Edit: the French anthem plays when Aurora and Phil meet the parents

The clothes in Mulan really got me interested in hanfu, which is super trendy now and has even non-Chinese wearing it (respectfully). I used to get annoyed by culturally ignorant people/costumes for sale online that say she's wearing a Japanese kimono or geisha attire when the clothes of that period in China actually inspired and predated other cultural garments like kimonos and hanbok, not the other way around. Even with the internet, it's sad people blur the lines of East Asian cultures, especially the weeb-ish/koreaboo types. Got into a comment argument with one guy who proudly claimed Mulan had aspects from Japanese culture but didn't even know Japan adapted some cultural elements from China, didn't even know there were freaking traditional Chinese characters in part of the Japanese alphabet...

I think her pants are called salwar. But her top is basically just a tube top. Normally, a Muslim princess would not expose her shoulders and midriff, but the idea was for both Jasmine and Aladdin to show that much skin to play into freedom, the main theme of the movie. They're both meant to be empowering through sexual liberation, which was pretty popular in the 80's and 90's.
Of course, Aladdin was never meant to be an accurate representation of any real culture. It's basically just a made up fantasy land with some Arab, Ottoman, Persian and Mughal flavors.

Don't spread lies. Her age has never been mentioned in any canon Disney media. Her being 15 was from the earlier drafts that was scrapped because she was too young. The directors actually said she's the same age as Aladdin. Also, none of the Disney Princess outfits would be worn by any real princess. And exposing the midriff and shoulders is very common among teenage girls, that's one of the reasons Jasmine dresses like that. And while that outfit would be inappropriate in real life, it is appropriate for her to wear it in the movie since exposed midriff symbolizes female empowerment (because only women have the power to create life) as well as freedom, which is the main theme of the movie.

Why is Mulan, Moana, Merida and Pocahontas considered princesses?
Mulan is a peasant who, presumably marries a captain of the army, not a royal
Merida is the daughter of a clan chief the possible equivalent of a governor
Moana is the daughter of a tribal chief, the equivalent of a mayor
Pocahontas is the daughter of a chief of a few tribes, like a governor
I don't think that even Belle could be a royal, more of a noble as it appears that Beast, in human form, is more like a baron than a king
Even Raya, who is not officially a Disney princess yet, is the daughter of yet another tribal chief

    • @Jaheartsjonas
      @Jaheartsjonas Год назад +4

Mulan was bestowed a royal-ish honorable title by the emperor for what she did, so that could help. The rest, they stretch it by using laws of relativity pretty much, "a tribal chief'a daughter is something LIKE a princess", etc etc etc.
Edit: Also the Beast was Prince Adam, not a king, how did you miss that? Belle's a princess by marriage

    • @dragonweyr44

Milan was honored BY the emperor for her defeating the Mongol horde but she didn't get any type of "honorary" royal status in the animated version
In the live action version, she became an advisor to the emperor, still not a royal position
As for Beast being a prince?
      How?
First off, he didn't have living parents as far as I could tell so wouldn't he be a king instead?
Second, I don't remember, in either version, him being called prince, duke or any other title. He does have some kind of noble status but it was never mentioned as far as I know. More to the point, he was never given a human name either
I doubt that he could have been a prince or a king in either case because, although he had plenty of servents, you know what we DIDN'T see?
      Royal guards
If he WAS a king or prince, shouldn't he have had guards?
As for the others, clans and tribes, as far as I understand them, are not the same thing as royalty
A clan chieftain or a tribal leader may be able to pass down the title to their offspring BUT if that offspring isn't competent enough for the job, someone else can challenge for it
The title isn't as set in stone as as a king might be. But, then again, kings can be overthrown, can't they?

also, disagree with your comments regarding Tiana's hair pre-Naveen: *as a working woman, she DEFINITELY didn't have the leisure to dress like a flapper* (permed bob & dropped waistline) when there were more pressing issues at stake like, y'know... *SAVING UP FOR A RESTAURANT*
also, besides "Aladdin's Lamp", "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" were the additions to the original "1001 Nights"
and FYI, *Aladdin is set in "China"* (emphasis on the quote marks since that's what it says on the tin)

I agree about Tiana, not all women cut their hair short in the 20's. Some just pinned it up to go with the trend of the day and perhaps some were just "bold" and wore it longer. Just like now not every woman wears the trendy looks of the moment. If you're busy working you're not thinking about keeping up with the latest trends lol

@@Jaheartsjonas regarding the "not all cut their hair short in the 20's": when the Philippines was an American colony (1898-1941), understandably the flapper fashion took hold as well, but since cutting hair was a big social no-no, fashionable women that weren't too radical (some did adopt the bob) compensated by just shaping and perming the visible hair at the front (termed "croquignoles", coloquially "croquis/krokis") while the rest of the long hair was tastefully formed into a chignon at the back and held in place with a comb and pins

If Moana HAD gone accurately topless, Disney definitely would've been slapped with a copyright claim. Only one topless Moana is allowed in media at a time.
The live action BatB places the story in 1775.
We have been over this REPEATEDLY: Tangled is canon to the continuity of Frozen, which takes place in 1839. That means Tangled takes place in 1836.
The climax of Aladdin takes place ON Jasmine's birthday, so she IS 16, which back then made her a legal adult (I assume that's why her father wanted her to be married by then, though she may have been legal already). And yeah, she's in a slave Leia outfit, but that's because this is JAFAR we're talking about. Also, her outfit is inspired by its source material: INDIAN tales. Indian harem girls in some eras and regions wore outfits like Jasmine's.

I'm taking issues with Raya's outfit specifically as a SEA person because although they tried to be all-encompassing by mix and matching elements from different countries' outfits, it became problematic as SEA cultures are really diverse. Lumping different identities together results in the loss of identities altogether if you get what I mean, and I'm sorry to say on behalf of SEA people that we don't feel represented at all by that movie

They did the same with Aladdin years before, Agrabah is a mixture of many different Eastern cultures. Also shows like Avatar The Last Airbender has done a similar thing with many Asian cultures. I don't see many people complaining about either.
