I'm in my 70's and have had an enlarged thyroid gland since my 20's. Every time I went to a doctor they sort of freaked out and had a thyroid panel done. I tell them that it will be normal and it always is. It seems to run in the family since my younger sister also had the same thing, except she had better insurance so her doctor took it out, only to find that there was nothing wrong with it.

The "detoxing" is actually Bromine shedding. With insufficient iodine, your cells take up bromine. Bromine is present in some breads, fire retardant fabric, and in some of the chemical that farmers spray on their crops. When your cells finally get some iodine, they release the Bromine which causes an unusual order in your pee. My Bromine shedding lasted about 4 - 6 weeks.

Thank you for addressing this subject. I DO buy iodized salt for cooking and table. My family has resided in a portion of the “goiter belt” (the Blue Ridge mountains) since colonial times. I am in my 70’s. My grandmother died of a goiter before they discovered the cause and need for iodine in the diet (1930’s?). It is my understanding seafood can provide the iodine as well. Of course they had only fresh fish in the mountains, which they had plenty of. I already knew about the lack of iodine in purchased salty foods. I didn’t know about the best storage of salt, but have always kept supplies in a dark cabinet. I will change to a sealed storage solution. It is my understanding that people who eat saltwater fish, etc, get ample iodine, hence the boundaries of the goiter belt explained. Thanks so much for spreading the word on iodine!!

Dr. Berry actually has a video specifically about that myth. Short version is no, you can't be allergic to iodine. You can be allergic to fish, or shellfish, or seaweed, etc. -- all foods that *contain* iodine -- you can be allergic to some of the other ingredients in iodinated contrast used for medical scans, or betadine, a medical disinfectant that *contains* iodine, among other things, but the iodine isn't what you're allergic to. Iodine is an essential nutrient that you can't live without. It would be like being "allergic to oxygen."

I was diagnosed with goiter after I came to the US from Germany at 7 years old.
The doctor said iodized salt would control it.
About 25-30 years ago, I developed sleep deprivation. I was barely able to function or keep a job.
A naturopath in 08 said I needed iodine. I had been using kosher salt for several years.
I started using iodine liquid, and the sleep problem went away.
I had previously gone to doctors to find the cause of my sleep problem, and they could tell me nothing.
I am now 75 and take iodine every morning. I put it into my first cup of coffee.
Medical doctors seem to not know anything about proper nutrition.

I was told I was allergic to iodine when I was a kid. I went into anaphylactic shock eating lobster tail. My grandmother also used mercurochrome on a wound and it swelled my arm up. I've avoided iodine because of this. I was also used to a low salt diet, so I've never been a big salt person anyway.
Earlier this it was suggested I take an iodine supplement. I got the Mary Ruth's liquid. Well, I misread the instructions and thought it meant 2 droppers full instead of actually 2 drops. I ended up taking 50x the recommended dose daily for 2 weeks before I figured out what I did ( went to reorder and it said it was supposed to last 18 months). Honestly it's the best I've felt in years. I cut back to half a dropper. I still felt better taking the more extreme amount daily. I wish I would have known this years ago.

Hi, Dr. Berry, this is off topic for this video, but I just came across a new study on meat consumption and hoped to get your take on it. I've been watching/studying/thinking about starting the carnivore diet (not sure I can eat that way long term, but also don't want to die young, so... pondering), but then studies like this one give me pause, especially since the number of participants in the study was so huge. I know big food and big pharma have infiltrated the colleges and everywhere else, but this was still a gigantic (overall) group of studies analyzed by researchers at the University of Cambridge: 1.97 MILLION participants total out of 31 study cohorts in 20 countries found that consuming just 50 grams of processed meat a day was associated with a 15% increased risk in developing type 2 diabetes, and 100 grams of unprocessed red meat a day was associated with a 10% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes over ten years. They say they accounted for factors such as age, gender, health-related behaviors, energy intake, and body mass index.
I suppose it could be more related to what else the participants were eating during that time versus being carnivore-only, but if you could weigh in on this, I'd love to hear your opinion. Thanks!
