  • The paint thickness gauge can be a very important tool in your arsenal when looking to buy a car, especially if it is older. Magnetic probes are used for steel, an eddy current probe is required for aluminum and ultrasonic probe for plastic. Cheaper ones like mine are accurate with to ±10% more expensive ones for painters and car detailing are closer to ±5%.

Good inspection tool and good illustration✊ i thought at first you were going to use a magnet. This is much more precise.

Guy I knew many years ago, who was into rebuilding, used a refrigerator magnet for bondo patches

I’ve heard of people doing it that way but it’s nice to know how many times the cars been painted.

Always wondered if there was a tool like this! Just wondering on the status of the giveaway for the satellite? Did I miss something?

Awesome tool Bryan! Even if a car doesn't have filler in it that would be real valuable to tell if a car has been painted several times! For the price I'm going to have to get me one of those! I wonder if it would work on my corvette. 🤔 Thanks for sharing!

I’m glad I could help🤙. You have to look at the ultrasonic probe set up they’re more expensive but they’ll be able to work on plastic and fiberglass.

if i'm buying a barn find the paint is the last thing i'm looking at till it runs rolls and stops.

thought because I mentioned it throughout most of the entire video it is not about the paint it’s about what is under the paint. If you’re about to buy a barn find and you found half of the quarter panel is most likely fiberglass and bondo you may either change your mind or ask for a much lower price. Sure a lot cars have pretty cheap sheet metal like the Chevelle, but a lot of cars have very expensive sheet metal or they don’t have any aftermarket sheet-metal at all. I was able to remove almost 2 feet of the rear quarter panel on the passenger side of the GS, there’s nothing more than just grabbing and pulling. Like I pointed out normally if there’s Bondo on steel there’s gonna be rust underneath it. If you haven’t had a deal with that and you’re fortunate and you’re probably not in the rust belt.

@@LunarOutlawsGarage I'm in the rust belt for sure. Did bodywork all my life so no surprises for me. always tapped on them with my knuckle tink tink thud ok there's the bondo. buying a piece of crap out of a barn or field anyways. i rarely payed over $200 so caring what they looked like not high on the priority list.
