- Hi everyone! This is video 21 in my series. The most commonly asked question I get is how much does one of these cost? So.... as of today (5/11/2019), here's the price.
Starting price when the PEBL was on kickstarter over 2 years ago was $5950 - since then a lot of changes have happened and now the price is competitive with others like the Organic Transit ELF. I bike all year round in Minneapolis, MN, and I'm an old man. The PEBL would be so nice to use during the winter months. I'd probably still stick to biking in the warmer months because I'm a single person and groceries aren't anymore than two bags that I fit in my collapsible side baskets. This truly is a great alternative vehicle for getting around in the cities.
Not to mention phone/cameras for safety/directions/insurance (12vplug) “Dead in the water”, I hate to ask about your public transit.
Curious how the PEBL compares to the ELF. They seem very similar.
Is it possible to use a debit card when paying $10,000 for it? Or is there another way to pay?
I paid for a PEBL BIKE since 2023 and I still can't get it yet. No updates either unless I reach out first. It's not looking good BETTER.BIKE. THIS IS NOT COOL :-(
I'm definitely buying a Pebl soon. Just like everything about it more than the Elf...which is basically a mute point as Organtic Transit has declared bankruptcy .
Thanks for the news, but that shocked me. How the hell did OT go broke selling bikes for $12,000 with customers backed up around the block to get them?! That's some serious mismanagement, crap. Now PEBL's are gonna have orders backed up for 3 years until someone else starts another proper company to pick up the slack.

I would sell a pebl like "knock off" cheaper but give consumers the option to assemble it themselves and or put actual motorcycle battery in it to hold up better

I love the idea of these bikes but I can't get past the fact for about the same price I can buy a 2016 Nissan Leaf S 30kWh, 23k miles + $2500 Oregon rebate - $12490
The manufacturers of these bikes are going need to figure out how to get the price down or they won't gain market share.
Numerate people know the math - cars cost far more to own, even if they are given to you free. Taking ownership of an unsustainable car of any design is the beginning of a never ending annual bill of at least $3000 and that can be far more. Owning the PEBL or ELF costs you just $300/yr on average to own so every ten years you save at least $27,000 by not owning a car plus you stop polluting and you get vital exercise in a fun way. The manufacturers of these bikes need to do a better job of informing consumers just how much of a bargain this is when you stop your personal car abuse.

All I can think of is what if someone steals it before I even pay it off? I know, big ass chain lock but bolt cutters do exist so still a very valid what-if.
I hope these things get more popular and drive the price down. But probably in a catch 22 where that'll never happen because of the high price.
All bike security measures apply and the motor key removes. The prices will continue to rise. This is an extremely large and conspicuous bike that kids can't hide in the bushes and it won't even fit in a van. Theft is not an issue with normal precautions.

@@donbaker3993 When it is locked to a bike rack with a kevlar reinforced cable? Only an extra long pickup bed will hold it. It is too large to fit in a standard van. It is so totally conspicuous there is no place a thief could ride it without being noticed. The thief would not have the motor key and would be lucky if there was no GPS tracker hidden in it. Also, it would take a really stupid thief to want to steal such a poorly designed vehicle. The PEBL is over built, it weighs 230 pounds so it is too heavy to enjoy pedaling it and it is a slug on hills. The ELF weighs 70 pounds less and is a joy to pedal. Theft has simply not been an issue with these car-bikes. Only one PEBL and 5 ELFS have ever been stolen in 7 years with 1300 of them sold.

David Macdonald the hubs motors and components by themselves would be just over $1200 then you’ve got a custom welded aluminum frame, a custom made fiberglass body, assembly, testing, and warranty. With MUCH higher quantity I could see the price coming back to around $6k but I don’t think an American made machine of this quality will ever get that low.
To get the price down to that range it would take annual production and sales numbers in the 10s -100s of thousands of units.
Rather than the PEBL's 50-100 units/year or the ELF's 100-200 units/year.
It's fairly simple to see this when making comparisons to other vehicles produced in sufficiently high numbers.
Examples:
Toyota Prius EV 30,000 - 100,000 units minimum per year, retail cost approx. $9.60 / lb.
A good quality, lower end E-bike 5,000 - 10,000 units per year, retail cost approx. $26 / lb.
The Better Bike PEBL 50 - 100 units per year, retail cost approx. $38 / lb.
So if a vehicle similar to the PEBL or ELF had production numbers of at least 25,000 units per year I could see it being sold for about $20 / lb.
In the PEBL's specific case this would be 230 lbs. x $20 / lb. = $4,600 USD retail before tax.

Eric i know what your saying but once he has made a jig for the frame its not like he has to custom make each one from scratch, eather way i like the idea but it wont fit on most paths and is out of reach for most people paying for a E bike ,any way i like your videos.
i agree. Chinese can sell enclosed scooters for $2000 with lead acid batteries! I think the reason reason they cost so much is they are a monopoly with no competition and they like having a big profit margin!
You can do the same thing on the Organic Transit site. Over all the prices are very similar. Never forget that car purchase prices are a different animal, even a totally free car is the start of a never ending money pit of annual insurance, maintenance, tags, fuel, oil changes and more. Cars have a $5000 motor and $3000 transmission to blow up. I have had two cars in my lifetime break their timing chains and need a new engine. No single part is that expensive in the PEBL or ELF except an entirely new body shell. We also can end any gym memberships when we drive a car-bike that can be pedaled.
You're absolutely right! Buying one of these is expensive sure when compared with a Walmart bike, but when compared to even a cheap used car, the cost differential is minimal. Of course then the used car's gas, insurance, and maintenance will definitely get you down.
Granted if you're shopping for a minivan to carry your 7 children to school and pick them up at soccer on the other side of town, then head south 20-miles to your job, then back after 2 hours, the PEBL or ELF isn't for you. You're really looking for a full-size van. Maybe you can teach the kids how to ride a bike and go on trips around town and all get exercise together when your daily grind isn't getting you down.
Hey, I just went to organictransit.com and noticed that they don't have the configurator on their site right now. It requires you to call and contact sales or email sales. I wonder why they made that change?

I always found it a bit strange when people pose the "how much does it cost question" to you here on RUclips.
It only takes going to Google for a few seconds to find a link to Better Bikes site and the PEBL pricing, you don't even need an accurate web address to do that.
If possible could you make your Facebook group open to public viewing without logging in.
Better Bike has their FB site open to public viewing and you only need to login if you want to post.
I'm not a big fan of FB and rarely login anymore because of its invasive nature.

@@resetthis9838 Since the person that posted this video has no official affiliation with the Better Bike company and around the time of posting the pricing had been changing a bit, and there are a number of accessories to consider, I can understand why they didn't bother with providing a price. My point was in regards to people that in a few seconds could just go to the Better Bike website themselves to have a look at the current pricing, but instead seem a bit lazy and ask about pricing in RUclips comments.

I saw the website and just found it confusing. This video really helped clear things up and his breakdown of why things are priced the way they are made it feel less like an overpriced ripoff.

Kandi is a proper electric car sold in the USA that starts at 9,999 USD. It will be very difficult to sell products like PEBL or ELF in the future.
The exact opposite is true - PEBL and ELF are light enough to be fully sustainable and they offer exercise in a fun way that no electric car can offer. Heavy personal cars of all types will be taxed into oblivion soon.

Today’s price according to better.bike is $13,255 before shipping with full enclosure package, cruiser tires and rim reinforcement, parking brake, 75-mi battery, windshield wiper. As my #7 PEBL was equipped.

Great video and about your last part about the Facebook group and wanting to eventually talk about and bring in other ways of transportation like the elf etc... mine won’t be starting off as luxurious or as well equipped as the pebl or the elf and others but I’m working on and planning on building my own version of these pedal electric vehicles or pedal cars whatever you want to call them and hope to bring it to the market as well and make a business from it myself

In theory PEBL bikes will in the near future start production in Germany in an effort to decrease costs and widen availability. Up till now they’ve only been available to US customers. Get on their email list or enquire on their website better.bike
A second ELF battery is pretty expensive. OT sourced a new US made battery last year. It is the absolutely highest quality available, fire/heat proof insulation between each cell, 17.5 AH at 48 volts. It has the plastic case with handle and costs $1000. Many of us with older ELFs have bought after market battery packs from Lunacycle. I bought two at once when my original started getting weak so they use the same locking track. My second locking track is not wired, it just holds a spare battery securely on the roomy front shelf. Note that in 5 years I have never run a battery down to shutoff voltage thanks to my small town location and solar panel that really puts out in Florida, year 'round. I almost depleted a 15AH battery with a 28 mile round trip to a state park near town. I was pedaling and had sunshine. Worth noting I weigh 295 pounds.
So far my batteries are holding up really well, but also I switch between them so the unfortunate thing is that when they eventually die and they will eventually die.... I'll be buying both at the same time. Probably I'll just do what you're talking about and have someone make one or even make one myself... there are great videos on RUclips of people that do just that.
@@EricFischnaller It is not usual for them to suddenly die, the first symptom is the full topping off charge becomes less than spec. My 5 year old original ELF pack is still viable with a top charge of 53.9 volts last time I checked. It still holds whatever charge I store it at, 6 months later. I have no home insurance so I store batteries inside a metal garbage can with tight lid.

Searching for prices, website, can't find pebl or ELF. Google offers Target, Ebay, or electric bike sellers etc. no ELF or Pedl websites. better.bike / contact is just a form to ask Q's. That would take25 emails & 3-4 weeks

I'd love to have one.. but.. I have so many hobbies that I can't justify it.. I have 4 motorcycles, four bicycles (2 recubent 1 electric), 2 kayaks one 14 foot fishing boat, thirty drones rc boats and cars and airplanes.

Pebl is a good bike car, but it has disadvantages, the first is the cost of this device, the second is that you can't ride with three people, it's still a car for one, an egoist car. It's not a bike. It is a car-bike with collision protection, weather protection and full DOT lighting system. My $9,000 ELF has saved me $18,000 in six years by getting rid of my car. The price can not be correctly compared to bicycles or cars. This is unique. PEBL closed and outsourced to Germany. Not currently available.

@@THOMASTHESAILOR This design puts the driver at eye level with car drivers. It is far more visible to cars than a bicycle plus we have all the lights, signals and horn. We also have crumple zone impact protection. Car drivers don't know it only weighs 200 pounds so they will fear damage to their vehicles if they bump us. No one has ever been killed in one of these. I watch my mirrors a lot, wave by close drivers and pull over rather than cause a backup. But at 20 mph, even up hills, this is faster than bicycles can do. I'm in Florida, the most dangerous state for bike fatalities but I feel safe enough by sharing the road. I don't hesitate to lay on my horn if an idiot crowds me. I drive with my right wheel 2 inches from the pavement edge and I have a solar powered safety flasher that runs at all times.

I live in CT . Many of the road are small . Practically NO bicycle lanes or break down lanes, etc. There's not a lot of room to "get out of the way" . .
I'd drive one of these , I have a short ride to work . It's CT that makes me nervous . .

Jon R. I get your concerns but feel the private group serves our needs a bit better. While it would benefit you who don’t want to login to see posts it opens all of the members up to general web traffic without logging into Facebook which leaves us unprotected completely.
No way I'm spending 10 thousand dollars on a Bike. It uses a 750w motor you can get for 650 bucks. For the 100 mile range model you might spend 1200 to 1800 on batteries. It's 4 feet wide. That's a little better than the Elf which is 5 feet wide but unless you have dedicated bike lanes that are 4 feet wide it will be hard to find a place to legally drive it because you cannot drive these on the car lanes. I've considered building one which I could do for about 3 thousand dollars or less if I don't build a fancy canopy. To get away with legally driving it on the side of the road like a normal ebike, it would have to be less than 2 and a half feet wide. Unless they change the laws in the US this is not a good choice because there is hardly anywhere you can drive it.
In Oregon you can drive in the car lanes if safe to do so like in downtown areas. Agreed overall. Price currently for a PEBL equipped like mine would be nearly $15k by the time you got it. A really nice ebike and gear for riding would be about $5k. I feel 6-8 would be reasonable but certainly not priced where they are now.

These are genius and all, but the pricing is absolutely terrible. Many people use bicycles as an alternative to a car. This is the perfect alternative to a car which would change the world of transport, but it costs more than a car! No offense, but I’d buy myself a vehicle before this. If they make one that is $800-1000 then fine. It saves lots of fuel. But $10-11k??
I agree the pricing is ridiculous but $800-$1000 is ridiculous you’d never be able to in 1 million years get an electric bike for $800-$1000 that has a full faring like this you can barely even buy a decent electric scooter for that much.
I think if they could get the pricing to be around $3000 maybe up to $4000 then you could see a real big change in the marketplace but at the price it’s at right now in the $13-$15,000 range they’re just way beyond what most people would accept

@@popeyegordon plus pollution is less than a car. Many people forget the process of making batteries is a very dirty one. 60k on a Prius before its cleaner than a normal gas car.

See Nomore yep they’re expensive. Thinking about today’s transportation is always expensive. Compared with a car it’s not too bad but your circle of available locations to visit is vastly diminished.

90% of bike riders would never consider $6000 for a road bike. This is wayyyyyy overpriced.
Well new ones are now like $13k. Most cyclists use their bikes for exercise or recreation. It’s tough to justify that level of expense. This isn’t just a fun bike though. Most folks who buy these are replacing a car. They’re WAYYYYY cheaper than a car even at the very inflated current prices. There are also a whole category of folks buying these since for medical reasons they’re unable to get a drivers license but there’s no such requirement to have a bike.

And the truth is this is not affordable for many people. yet as I just told someone something like this could change a persons life allowing to get a job, be dependent only on themselves ,lower the carbon foot print.
Exactly. A lot of folks interested in this are unable to drive for on3 reason or another but this gives them back their independence
@@EricFischnaller yes and that is what I am trying to do honestly. looking to build something of quality but affordable for even low income people. not all people low income or on government assistance want that and as you said one reason or another they can not drive or maybe just can not afford a vehicle . I wanted a velomobile for years ..the price out of my range as this is and I hardly understand why given these are all off the shelf bicycle parts mostly.
@@simplelife3466 I think the main cost here (especially with current pricing) is the body. They also hired a shop to do the frame so you’d have to figure $1000 frame, $1000 body then another $500 for electric motor wiring etc. the hubs and wheels are another $1400. Other parts are cheap overall then assembly- I’d guess their cost out the door was in the neighborhood of $5900-ish which is what I paid back when I ordered #7. Shipping and upgrades took me up to $8200. Labor and part prices have really got expensive and hard to get over the last few years. Still don’t think the current prices are reasonable. Should top out at $10k max not nearly $14

I got rid of my old car 6 years ago. Since then I have saved at least $18,000 and I am more healthy now. Cars are what is too expensive. I only have bike maintenance costs now and I stopped polluting. If you prefer to drive newer cars, the ELF will save you over $50,000 every ten years and we still have the option to rent a car if it is needed.

Just buy a car its cheaper and warmer + faster travel anything over 800.00 you can get a car
The problem is many of the people interested in these have a car and just don't like commuting in them. For someone with a short commute (less than 15mi), often times there's a lot of stop-and-go traffic, irritation, and idiots making you mad while you're just trying to go from point a to point b. Personally, riding a bike or something like the PEBL, or even an electric scooter is vastly more fun, healthy, and enjoyable. Plus for me at least, the drive was 12-18 minutes depending on lights and with the PEBL the drive was 10-11 minutes. Always faster. If the train came it was another 10 minutes faster.
That being said, the new ones are priced so high as to be out of the market for most if not all of its target audience. I wouldn't even buy one today and I loved that vehicle. I'd buy an $1500 waterproof electric scooter like the Emove Cruiser and call it good. It's fast, fun, and extremely economical. Never buy $4/gal gas, never wait in lines in traffic, use bike lanes, and with a 40-mi range, only charge 1-2 times a week. Folds up to bring inside so you don't have to worry about theft and you can wear rain gear, and not get sweaty since it's not requiring you to "pedal". I'm a big believer in these types of vehicles if they can resolve the water-proofness issues that have made them in-sensible for most in wet climates.

@@EricFischnaller i would put a motorcycle battery or a deep cycle marine instead and put my own solar panel cheaper from amazon etc.
Crowman is keep an eye out for a used one or one that suffers minor body damage used (think salvage title) and do just that.

@@crowman8914 Those heavy low performance batteries would never work. A motorcycle battery would run down in 2 minutes if if could handle the amperage, which it could not. Heavy marine lead acid batteries would weigh far too much and not enough room for them. You can't mess with the design, you just think you can.

Could be. And you’d need to have a legal drivers license, pay insurance, sit in traffic, wouldn’t get exercise, etc. these things are ridiculously expensive. Now even more so nearly $14k. Owning something entirely unique usually is. Life’s all about choices my friend.

actually the base price is now 12 K, without solar roof. Still a bargain compared to owning any car, even a car given to you free costs a minimum of $3000 a year or $30,000 every ten years.

@@popeyegordon The PEBL will not last ten years without maintenance. I like the idea but it's a false economy to pay this much for a vehicle that will have limited usefulness and is untested long-term.
@@JoeJoe-lq6bd You started with a false premise. All of these bikes like the ELF and PEBL need regular maintenance, most of which is easy for amateurs. The point here is that a car is far more costly and complex. On board computers that need reader equipment. Insurance, gas, license, driver license, engine maintenance, brake jobs, expensive tire sets, in total at least $3000 a year to own on average and as much as $8000 a year to own according to the AAA.
ELF and PEBL have no $5000 motor or $4000 transmission to blow up. In my lifetime I have lost two car engines to a broken timing belt. The motor for these bikes costs $300 total.
