    The UNSC Infinity is a ship I very much enjoy the aesthetics of. Similar to Mjolnir armor, it emphasizes the culmination of many of the war time developments and is able to provide an example of Humanity can endure the worst thrown at it and come out of it alive and in some ways even stronger. While Humanity is likely one the backfoot again in Halo Infinite; it would be enjoyable see more of it in apocryphal stories and how may it be used in Infinite.

      @@darkelysium2187 Indeed and even if destroyed, the UNSC has likely figured out how to build more of them more quickly. As the USS Ford can attest to, the first ship in the class usually takes far longer than their sister ships to complete and get the bugs worked out.
      Much like Kirk and Picard. I can see Captain Lasky taking command of the UNSC Infinity-A after the Eternity's completion.
      In the end, while it does hurt and takes time, ships at the end of the day are just machines that can be built again and again. What is key, is the legacy of the name.
      Just like how the UNSC made the Pillar of Autumn class heavy cruisers thanks to Captain Keys and his command of the Pillar of Autumn.
      or the fact the US is building the 9th Enterprise or is ten, I forget.
      Thanks to the exploits of Captain Lasky, I have no doubt the Infinity will live on in successor warships.

      @UnreasonableOpinions 2 года назад +8

      @Kwoney I actually like the contradiction in terms that it would be a stupid idea as a warship from a vastly inferior power. It's obvious it was intended as an evacuation ship, but that the UNSC is pretending it was a secret Wunderwaffen asks why they would do that, and the obvious answer is because the UNSC propaganda arm had been telling people for the entire war that it was fine and they definitely weren't utterly losing, and now would rather retrofit an evacuation ship into a warship and pretend it was a warship all along than admit they had made an evacuation ship in secret. Small reminders that there is a world beyond the soldiers and the frontlines are key to military sci-fi worldbuilding.

      @jakespacepiratee3740 2 года назад +59

      The concept of "realism" in sci-fi has always irked me. Recently, Google's Quantum Supercomputer had created a "Time Crystal" - something that breaks the laws of physics. So, would a sci-fi franchise that makes use of time crystals unrealistic? No.
      What a better phrasing you would be looking for would be "Humans ships in Halo are pretty modern in their design and weaponry"

    • @jakespacepiratee3740
      @jakespacepiratee3740 2 года назад +14

      @Kwoney I never said I think our current physics model is invalid, just that we know very little about what is real and the actual universe when we keep finding objects that can act outside its laws. The idea of realism meaning practical application also seems flawed, as Humans frequently use inefficient resources over what would benefit way more. Hell, Humans thought TVs would fail because nobody would have time to watch it, our understanding of what is practical or plausible is also flawed. The next 100 years will be drastically different to how things are now, so the idea of everything in society and technology remaining practically unchanged in years like 2553 in Halo is still silly to me.
      Even now, people created Synthetic robot cells that can reproduce.

The whole 'warship' label seems like it was applied after-the-fact, mostly so the UNSC wouldn't have to explain to the people it had been telling that we were definitely not losing the war that it had built an evacuation ship in complete secret. Expensive, but cheaper than a full-scale revolution from angry civilians.

    So here's something that I remember thinking the first time I heard about this ship. Is it really a good idea to have internal docking bays big enough to carry entire frigates? Like that space could be used for additional weapons, defenses, or just cut off to reduce the mass and targeting profile ship. The only real advantage to docking such large vessels within an even larger one that I can think of is the aforementioned usage of a more precise Drive. But wouldn't it work just as well to dock them externally and save the space? This means additionally if the ship takes damage to the hangers it doesn't block the ships from deploying. And that's not pointing out the fact that we know small ships can go through the slipspace portals of larger ships like in halo 2.

      having large internal hangers would allow you to dry dock a ship and repair it while away from port, and seeing how Infinity was originally a Ark it make sense to have. those hangers would also allow Infinity to carry a large amount of cargo should it have to.
      now if you are building a dedicated warship I would use the the space for weapons and the like, but sense Infinity is a refitted Ark ship it is fine to have them.

      I suspect they might have been a side effect of having to build the damned beast. If I had to build it, and I had no shipyard(large enough) to work with. I'd set up the docking bay scaffolding first, that way you could use up to six? Frigates at once to ferry supplies in and just build it around the frigates. That way you can use those frigates power supplies and facilities aswell while the main ships stuff isn't online yet.

    Pity they nerf the absolute shit out of the Infinity in halo: infinite, the banished blew it up in a few seconds. It went from ramming continent ships for fun, and being powerful enough to damage the Mantles approach, to being taken down by a bunch of Mad max banished... Its shields appeared to be useless as it sat there dyeing , it has put me off buying the game.

      Yeah it's very annoying that 343 has basically neutered the Infinity because they didn't have an intelligent enough writer who loved and appreciated the game like we do.

    They better not have destroyed the infinity.

      It's not cannon to me. 343's story writing obviously focuses on emotional appeals and really does bad at the logical parts. Like how the hell did the infinity get taken down so fast while the old ass outdated Spirit of Fire never so much even got a scratch...where did the banish even make their ships from, and how TF did they even get on Zeta Halo after being stuck on the Ark with the SOF's forces....so much unexplained, feels like the new Star wars movies quality.... piss poor.

    Let me just talk about the sheer SHOCK value 343i was going for when they showed the UNSC Infinity drop out of slipspace.
    HOLY FUCK did they set that up well.
    Throw in a few "Small" ships that we would recognize from Reach flying past a much larger ship...
    Then have the Infinity fucking DWARF it and smash it into pieces.
    That is definitely one method of providing scale to a large object.
    Frame of reference for those of us in the know, Add a second frame, THEN bring in the big MOFO and have it smash stuff.
