  • Every holiday season since 2008, Amazon has hired hundreds of nomadic workers for temporary warehouse jobs. The CamperForce program is a small portion of this year’s 150,000 seasonal hires, but it gained notoriety in the 2020 movie “Nomadland.” This year, it’s seen its biggest growth yet, doubling to 26 sites in 14 states. Despite the growth, Amazon has shifted away from arranging workers’ campgrounds and paying for them directly. Here’s what it’s really like to live in an RV and work for Amazon during the holidays.

    No such thing as labor shortage. The labor is available, companies just don't want to pay people fairly. Better name for it should be "Fair wage shortage"

      Unions are at times corrupt whenever they protests or stage a strike, they meet with the employers behind the scene and negotiate a sweet deal between them and the employer they negotiate such a very nice benefit for themselves and leave scraps to the rest of the union members. The more a union leader is close with the employer behind the scenes while maintaining a pro worker stance in public is what happens behind many unions. That is how communism worked in the past in the Soviet Union, Communist China, Vietnam, North Korea & etc... a low income person given so much power and authority for the first time in his/her life is very prone to corruption.

All employees and temps can do as many hours as they want and some do bring a camper or rv for sleep. we have showers in our employee bathrooms and its not bad at all. I personally have worked for FedEx for 2 years now and this "peak" season I worked 120 hours a week. I cleared 15k a month and saved it all. Its very tiring but so worth it for the money, and its just a couple months out of year where you can choose to go all out. Sure, I imagine some of these people are choosing to live this "nomadic" camper lifestyle, and that's great for them. However, given the rapid expansion of this program its hard to believe that this many people have "chosen" to live in an RV or camper van. This is Amazon (and other companies) taking advantage of people in situations that they don't necessarily want to be in.

I can see how this lifestyle could be great for some people/families and this family seems to have a great RV and a nice life. However, I am concerned that we're headed towards an economy where this isn't really a choice, and people's movable homes are less comfortable.
    And frankly, if Amazon is going to have a whole workforce living in RVs they should be willing to provide a place for people to park their RV while they are working there. Depending on the location and time of year, a campsite may not be available and event renting by the month at a campsite can be more expensive than renting an apartment.

    So, these two think that this is the "life"? I can understand doing this if they have saved enough for retirement. This is the type of gig for people who have saved up enough money for retirement and then simply travel around the country while earning such a low wage. These two are still young. I bet they don't have even a six-figure amount in their retirement portfolio.
    Their kids are going to grow up and struggle just like the parents, and consequently the "vicious cycle of poverty" continues.
    People need to understand that poverty could stem from having a certain pseudo utopian mindset. It is cool to want to travel around the country. However, be realistic about it and think about having a job that will enable a somewhat comfortable retirement.

    • @reallyrandomrides1296
      @reallyrandomrides1296 2 года назад +16

      It might be "the life" compared to what they used to have. An RV depreciates, whereas a sticks and bricks home appreciates in value, so that's a downside. But it looks like they have a nice, comfortable new fifth wheel RV. Everyone has different aspirations and goals. It looks like they're having fun and they know they have a home to come back to every night, and enough money to live on. Granted, this doesn't seem like it will build a nest egg for retirement, but in this day and age with housing prices going up so fast, the cost of living and inflation rising faster than wages, sometimes you just have to live in the moment and take care of yourself now.

Their expenses are low so I'm guessing they're banking some money as well as contributing to their social security account through taxes. Ultimately the most important thing is enjoying one's life so they're ahead of most people already since they appear to be content with their lifestyle on the whole. Living in an RV and working for Amazon & most other jobs is absolutely positively NO where near enough to pay for RV overhead. RV overhead is sure NOT the only thing to pay. Truck and campground overhead are also killers. It sure takes a Fortune 500 executive to get an RV and maintain that thing. There is also another problem. Values of RVs and trucks drop like stone. On top of that, driving an RV is very clumsy & clunky; same is true for towing an RV trailer. All kinds of things go wrong with RVs and RV trailers - repair services are oftentimes so hard to get. With Amazon jobs being so demanding, a life like that is sure to be very hard. Amazon does NOT even want to pay for campground expenses. RV people working for Amazon do NOT get company match for 401(k) retirement savings. The unfortunate reality is that people oftentimes borrow huge sums of money to buy an RV and RV trailers.

    • @matthewcole1188
      @matthewcole1188 2 года назад +11

      A. They have a trailer not an RV and I would suspect that would be common. Trailers barely depreciate in value since they last a very very long time. Repairs on trailers are not that exepensive the main cost is just the maintenance on the truck which you would have to do otherwise if you own a car. Additionally, they aren't necessarily moving it a lot which cuts maintenance dramatically
      B. If you own the rig and amazon pays for your spot then it is much much cheaper then rent.
      C. In any case, this doesn't matter because we know for certain that this is a popular thing. People are only working a small fraction of the year and then rving the rest. If your implication is correct, that would imply there is a massive conspiracy of people lying about working at seasonally amazon and rving and amazon is just pretending they have nomad workers.
