- DIY....WHY SPEND $30 TO $40 DOLLARS FOR A READY MADE CABOOSE WHEN YOU CAN TAKE YOUR OWN CABOOSE AND MAKE AN EQUALLY NICE ONE. HERE IS A WAY TO MAKE YOUR AMERICAN FLYER WITH LED MARKER LAMPS IN A VERY ECONOMICAL WAY.
This is a good project if you do not mind changing AF cabooses. I bet it works just as well on Lionel AF cabooses TM AF Collector

I live in northern North Dakota which presents 2 problems: 1) winter wind chills often reach 40-50 below zero; 2) American Flyer hobbyists and train shows are few and far between. Nice project, thank You do you think smoke in the caboose would be fun??? I have done lights on the sides of the car but like you say not cheap. This is a good project. Dennis
Hi Dennis, I first thought about a smoke unit in the caboose when I came across a copy of the original AC Gilbert engineering mockup drawing for an American Flyer smoking caboose. Unfortunately that never went into production. Later on I have seen Seuth units put into a caboose. That didn;t work out for 2 reasons. First the Seuth units are small and you constantly have to keep the smoke fluids filled, otherwise with the lack of fluid, the unit will be damaged. Second, I believe the Seuth heats up very hot which is not tolerated by the caboose plastic shell. Perhaps a small AC Gilbert unit either from a Casey Jones 21168 (it shorter than the regular steamers) or the older HO size American Flyer smoking engines?
