TESTING A 3 SCALE NEWLY BUILT 3 SECTION MODULAR UNIT WITH TEMPORARY TRACKS - S GAUGE, HO AND N GAUGE
THIS IS A NEWLY COMPLETED 3 SECTION MODULAR TRAIN BOARD WHICH ACCOMPANYS 3 LOOPS WITH 3 SCALE TRACKS WITH A PLYWOOD BOARD FOOT PRINT OF 8' X 4'
THE PLYWOOD BOARD IS COMPLETED AND HELD TOGETHER WITH 2-1/2 INCH SCREW BOLTS AND NUTS FOR EASE OF ASSEMBLING AND DISASSEMBLING AT THE TRAIN SHOWS. EACH BOARD IS SMALL ENOUGH FOR TRANSPORTING IN A TRUNK OF A CAR WHICH ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR A TRUCK.
THE BOARD's GROUND COVER IS WITH A NEW THIN INDOOR OUTDOOR CARPET (NOT SYNTHETIC GRASS WHICH IS TOO LONG) AND IS WRAPPED OVER AND UNDER EACH EDGE OF THE BOARDS.
FOR PURPOSE OF TESTING EACH OF THE TEMPORARY TRACK LAYOUT WE USED:
1. OUTER LOOP IS "S-GAUGE AMERICAN FLYER"
2. MIDDLE LOOP IS "HO"

    So if I understand correctly, the new formula you created is not toxic, which means if it is inhaled, it will not cause irritation? I have had trouble with some smoke fluids because they do irritate my lungs. I'd also be interested if you made other scents, like "coal smoke" or something that smells like a live steam engine. Thank you for a helpful and informative video.

    • @IRONRAILROAD
      @IRONRAILROAD 2 месяца назад

      The formulation consists of NF-USP certified as non toxic if inhale during normal use. As with any other inhalation products and of its by products if an excessive is inhale, it will cause at the very minimal a discomfort. Similarly if one is grilling on a barbeque, the barbeque scemt is considered as non toxic. However in excess it may cause irritation. In addition, if one have sensitivity or allergic reactions to a safe ingredient, it is best to avoid it. If you will refer to my previous video, I have address the issue concerning lung irritation. The video is entitled: I'M FROM THE GOVERNMENT EPA TO ASSESS THE SAFETY OF YOUR MODEL TRAIN SMOKE AND "YOU WILL DO" AS I... As for other scents, more are planned as this Cedar scent is the first inception phase. Thank you for visiting my video.

    Where is the second section of the freight train? You can just use "modeler's license" and simply say it's a couple of signal blocks back! LEDs are a good idea and are not likely to load down a set transformer. Another LED you could consider is a red one for the firebox door and grates.

    George Jacobs is credited for enamelled wire.

    • @IRONRAILROAD
      @IRONRAILROAD 4 месяца назад

      Yes that is correct. George Jacobs in 1907 did perfected the enamel insulation for the magnet wire. There is a slight conflicting historical notations between Mr. Jacobs and AC Gilbert company. I'm thinking perhaps AC Gilbert may be the first to actually patent it in an actual motor and history gave AC Gilbert more historical visibility in the model train world?

    This is one of your best Doug. I have a question on the two monster motors, Where did the builder of the motors find or cut the worm shaft which has to be longer too reach the bull gear on the rear axle. If they just cut and drilled and threaded two worm shafts together how does the worm shaft not unscrew itself? I would like to build one for myslf.

    • @IRONRAILROAD
      @IRONRAILROAD 4 месяца назад

      You may not need a monster motor per se. Size is not the only determining factor for a more powerful motor.. If you use Gilberts standard motor wire, then a one inch motor is more powerful than the Gilbert Big motor (which comes in both 5/8 inch and 3/4 inches). Using an upgraded wire ( as mentioned in the video) in the 3/4 inch size can produce the equivalent of the one inch motor torque. As for the worm gear drive, one builder used the latest and last model 3/4 inch armature shaft (motor with the round commutator) which I believe have a slightly greater length. For the real monster motor necessitating a special elongated shaft, he "brazed" together enough length and then must be "trued" on a mini-lathe Producing one of these mothers requires a bit of good experienced skill. Not for the average DIY Hope this helps.

    I have about 7 of these engines, the old 70-year-old motors and a after a while are just nothing but problems I couldn't keep them running. You can buy a brand new motor for this for $49. A cam motoh my gosh. It runs like a brand new engine, no more AC noise. With the new motor for the $49 investment, I'm 2 V. This engine can crawl like a turtle. If you can keep the old motors and he's running good for you. But when you invest a $49 and install one, it's like you've got a brand new engine. Had to do a lot of digging on RUclips. I don't think a lot of people know about the brand new cam motor you can get you We'll have to put a bridge rectifier in the cold car which will convert it from AC. To DC. Easy but it is super quiet very good investment. I wish I would have known about this before I scrapped so many of these for parts.

    Hello! I am working on a 21085 with the two prong plug that has not been plugged in for years - not sure if it works. Unfortunately the plug broke off the wires. I am considering repairing the plug myself and I wondering if you know where I could find the replacement plug, or/if there is a way to make the connection directly to the tender. Thanks for any help!

    • @IRONRAILROAD
      @IRONRAILROAD 6 месяцев назад

      Hello Eric. You have 2 options. One easier the other requires more labor. One way is to take the existing 2 wires from the plug. Remove the plug and solder and extend the wire so it will reach the 2 truck rivets in the tender. Then solder one wire to each of the truck rivets. The other method is to buy a new plug. I have one on Ebay if you enter the Ebay item # into the Ebay search field it will come up: 204670111246 Good Luck and thanks for watching my youtube site. Doug

  • @MarkWick
    @MarkWick 6 месяцев назад

    I have the earlier version of the 21085 which ran beautifully, and pulled long trains, before it just quit running. The problem is in the two position e-unit which I have been unable to repair. I didn't realize the chassis is built differently because I haven't looked at that part of the locomotive. Thanks for this information. I am considering trying to replace the motor and e-unit with those from a 290, which I have several of. Do you know if that would work?

    • @IRONRAILROAD
      @IRONRAILROAD 6 месяцев назад

      IF the reverse unit is just not functioning and it was, then try to spray it with some electronic contact cleaner. (not the degreaser but the one for electronic components). it may be gunked up from much use. If something that is broken it may be easier to replace the reverse unit. If the mounting holes of the 290 motor lines up with the 21085 chassis motor mounting holes, then it will will work. Obviously you will need the 290 reverse unit in the tender. Or you can just solder 2 wires from the new motor or the old motor (one wire to each rivet on the tender chassis) to the tender to let the 21085 to just be a (forward) runner. Hope this helps

    I had a Craftsman 4X24" belt sander for about 20 years. It was a workhorse but the time came when it needed replacing. I bought the Makita 9403 to replace it. Quite happy with it. Which was "better?" Dunn'o really. The old Craftsman served me pretty well. I just wore it out. One reason I did not investigate getting another Craftsman tool was that Sears was in steep decline at the time and would no longer ship replacement parts to my local Sears shop. Heck with that! Service was the reason I remained loyal to Sears for decades. When service went, I went. My Makita 9403 currently needs a platen replacement. Debating on whether to get the steel plus cork or go with the graphite pads.

    • @IRONRAILROAD

I have the Kansas City one too. I have the PCC cars in paint schemes from Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Johnstown, Brooklyn, Minneapolis, St .Louis, Toronto, etc., etc. I see you have one of the Philly cars in your glass display cases. Looks very similar to my 027 from my childhood (back in the 60s).

    The American Flyer looks much better than the Willams, Lionel also made the EP 5 using the same 4 wheel trucks as their diesels & GP 7s Lionel made them in NH, Milwaukee Road, Pennsylvania & Great Northern between 1956 & 1960

      Thanks for the comment. The EPs are nice looking engines. Too bad there is none left in real life

    Thank you for posting. You've given me a few ideas and some really good information that I can use for installing LED's. I've installed a 5mm LED in my O27 Texas Special with appropriate current limiting (ballast) resistor. Could you use a paper clip for the hand rails? I've got plenty of them. That looks like a Lionel Scout 2-4-2 engine which I have 2 of--one is die cast and the other is plastic but both run really well. I think they're smokers too. I also smashed up a big old chunk of bituminous coal (anthracite would have been easier, but railroads never used soft coal) and glued it on top of the fake coal in the tenders to add a touch of realism. Do you run on AC or DC power? I run all my Lionel 027 on DC power just like my HO scale. I even wired a 5mm LED into my HO scale brass Hallmark Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 but had to paint the inside of the LED black to stop a light leak. Cheers from eastern TN

      That is the beauty of this great train hobby. We can use our imagination, let it run and build greater locomotives and trains. I see the factory models as a core model to build on. I also customized some S gauge Flyer engines, some I posted and I have others not yet posted. I have an extended American Flyer Hudson that have a footprint of 4-14-4 with dual tenders not posted yet. Keep them trains rolling in Eastern TN! And likewise cheers from southern New Jersey
