Fire Danger Rating: More Than Just A Number

Fire danger rating systems utilize a complex mixture of science, technology, and local observations to generate outputs which support wildland fire suppression decisions. Fire managers and dispatch centers use outputs such as fuel moistures, indices, and components to determine staffing, dispatch, and preparedness levels, adjective fire danger ratings, and fire restrictions. On-the-ground firefighting personnel can use these outputs, in combination with pocket cards, to inform their situational awareness by revealing key factors and trends in the fire environment.
