Shoulder turn the only why to reach back.
The run up reach back really is not the best why to think of the reach back. The reach back should be thought as a shoulder turn. The shoulder turn is were you build up all your coil to throw the disc. The shoulder turn makes this happen and reaching back you don't really think about making body tension or coil. Just need to remember why you reach back and the importance of it.

I agree. I like to initiate the coil with my left shoulder .

Aloha, I think it's a better way of thinking about coiling. Aloha Michael

@@DiscGolf101 Seems to me keeping the disc close to the body and letting the stride give u the reach back and focusing on giving the disc spin is more consistent. Maybe if your an advanced player you can add a little extra reach back. Thanks for the tips and insight.

could you do a video on the difference between shoulder coil vs. just "turning backwards" one video you had you mentioned a mistake a lot of people make is "spin with the disc" rather than actually throw the disc, and i wonder if its due to poor coiling.

also, when you coil, i have an issue knowing how far away from my body the disc should be. it sort of looks like your arm is tucked in close under the chin.

turning your shoulders creates more upper body tension, and keeps you from swaying.

Aloha, The old school word "reach back " it makes people think you just stick your arm out backwards on the run up. So they are not thinking coiling, body tension.
The more modern word "shoulder turn" is being used because when you turn your shoulders you can't help but put coil tention in your core.
So people do it by default.
The better coil the faster you can turn back to the front.
The front braced leg helps keep the tention in your body from the coil. If you spin on your front leg you will release the coil tention. Stand with front leg perpendicular, coil you'll feel tension then open front foot you you'll notice the tension goes away
      .
Spinning is from standing up to straight. You can't stop your momentum if you stand up tall. Head on top you can stop behind your braced leg.

Aloha, So old school they thought arm down your body line. But you would hit yourself in the chest on occasions because disc is too close to the body.
Today guys are about one disc away from body . So the throw is kind of a out to in throw. Out from body on reach back then pull under face to release. This way you don't hit yourself in the chest anymore.
      Aloha Michael

Aloha, the thing is by turning your shoulders You build body tension without knowing it compared to reaching back and not building body tension. Aloha Michael
