Fell asleep waiting for this ! Thanks Judd for bringing the camp notes ! I like the Kneal Harry move to tight end, good move on his part , big strong guy !
JJ has great infrastructure for a rookie QB. I wouldn’t be shocked if he starts at some point but I also won’t be shocked if Darnold looks great in practice.
Darnold will no doubt look good in practice. His athletic traits have allowed him to carve a role as a backup despite being a poor NFL QB. His lack of mental and emotional toughness are why he will continue to collapse in games. Coaching won’t help him perform under pressure, not see ghosts, and not turn the ball over. He has shown us who he is over six seasons. And the sad thing is this fanbase knows it. They would be trolling another fanbase planning to start Sam Darnold. But because he wears Purple there is this collective insanity about him becoming great.
You guys talk about Darnold having a Gino Smith, Baker Mayfield, type season. I will take this another level, we can all agree that "On Paper" the defense has improved! I believe, with this team, with O'Connell, coaching, Darnold could have, dare I say, a Case Keenum, Jeff George, or a Randall Cunningham season!
One thing about McCarthy sitting for a year is it takes pressure off the coaching staff, also leaves options on the table if Darnold is a mega bust. I just love the situation the team is in as a whole, and it shows that the management and coaches know how to keep there jobs for time being.
It doesn’t remove the pressure. It just delays it and makes 2025 that much more intense as KOC will be on the hot seat after another losing season with zero idea if McCarthy is any good. Since they wasted a year of his rookie deal for no reason at all. And that is only if Darnold somehow progresses to serviceable after years of proving to be less than that. If Darnold proves to be who he has always been then the pressure from fans, media, and ownership will become overwhelming. All of you delay finding out folks would suddenly be begging for the rookie and complaining about the terrible decision to sit him. Instead of allowing McCarthy to play those first few games of the season with an opportunity to grow and improve, make some mistakes, lose some games while still having hope about the overall season and future he would be thrust into the middle of a losing season with incredible pressure to be great immediately and somehow salvage the season. Any mistakes would be magnified tenfold because of the situation.
@@intrepidfoolyou forget darnold has had shitty infrastructure everywhere hes gone cept san fran. And by your logic, it seems you want mcarthy to start. He is CLEARLY not ready in any fashion, and it would be a .001% chance if he happens todo DECENT if he starts at all. Look at what the packers did with love, and look how he turned out.
Risner is a one position back up, but since Brandel can play every position besides center, he would likely move from LG to the injured persons position and Risner would play LG.
I think the Risner signing opens up an extra roster spot for the defense, (e.g. only need 9 O Line), which could help protect someone like Andre Carter, Gabe Murphy, or McGlothern from the PS.
I like the Risner addition, and yes it has helped quite down the interior line chatter Mackey. Are there any rumors or whispers about an interior defensive line addition?
JJ probably gets more snaps working with the second team than he would getting left-over snaps that Mullins is getting. More repetitions to work on his foot work, release points, playbook, etc.
This is absolutely the reason. It has zero to do with depth chart. Darnold and McCarthy are getting the snaps and coaching. There is no chance unless McCarthy is an absolute bust or Darnold is traded that Mullens is QB2 week one. Judd is just super scared about finding out if the rookie is good and wants to wrap him in bubble wrap. He sees what he wants to support his fear. Judd is seeing ghosts just like Darnold. Coller has become the voice of reason on Darnold and McCarthy as PD has jumped the shark.
Even more, during the season the back up is practicing the specific weekly game plan, whereas the QB3 can still practice technique and the whole playbook.
If KOC decides that starting Darnold all year is the best thing for JJ’s development, I’m all for it. I think it does potentially push back the “Super Bowl window” by a year, though. Would love to see JJ play at least half the year to get adjusted to the league, then come into year 2 ready to play at a high level. If he doesn’t play meaningful snaps this year, it’s hard to see that happening in year 2. Either way, they can’t rush the decision. Play him when he’s ready and not a second before!
Darnold isn’t in the same stratosphere as Smith. That would be the situation if Cousins had re-signed. Then everyone would expect McCarthy to sit. Darnold is a journeyman backup on his 4th team. Athletic traits with zero feel for the NFL game. Sees ghosts, panics, and turns the ball over. He isn’t the answer. It is a problem heading into 2025 if McCarthy is unable to win the job.
We get it man Sam is the starter for 24 I would hope they told him that before he signed but don’t you think ko is doing this on purpose keeping McCarthy on the second string so all the attention and pressure is elsewhere

the stat on QBs entering into good situations is very interesting. however, i'm curious about the stat on QBs entering into the WORST situation. in that category, i would bet darnold is at least in the top 20 all-time

A rookie QB will throw interceptions as he is trying to figure out what throws he can get away with and what throws he can't. I think JJ definitely needs some experience and i would rather have him figure this out this season not next year.

I like how almost everyone has an opinion about "when JJ should start" without even getting to training camp. IMO it's a simple decision. He should start when his play level is equal to the other QBs on the roster. I say equal because he was drafted to be qbotf so he should get the tie breaker.
I'd argue the point is when there is no way that they would pull him, even if he had a bad start/patch. The point of no going back - which is probably further along than the tiebreak.
@@wildwillie5408 You said JJ starts when equal and tiebreaker goes to JJ. I'm just suggesting that they have indicated they'll be a fraction more cautious than that - to no turning back - rather than ready enough.

JJ will get his chance to bond and work with Jefferson before he ever has to start for the Vikings. Why are people so concerned? We all knew that Darnold was starting so obviously he should have as many reps with the starting receivers. Calm down people.
Mccarthy is getting more reps as the QB3 than he would as QB2, and the plan has always been to have him sit for a year, just like Mahomes. I'm not saying he's Mahomes, but KC didn't know he was Mahomes either, otherwise he would have started over Smith his rookie year. In addition, since there's no plan to start him, why confuse the starters learning the styles of 2 different QBs? Darnold is the starter, so the starters will work with him. Jj is going to be the third string qb this year. They don’t want to play him too early. Only way they want him to play is if the qb’s get injured. They don’t want him to get thrown in before he’s ready.
I’m glad it is Judd giving the camp report and not Mackey, Declan or Thor who would be too busy polishing McCarthy’s bust for Canton to give an objective review of how Darnold and McCarthy are doing.
I wouldn’t read too much into it. Judd is afraid of his own shadow and Mackey has been trolling / playing devil’s advocate for the past few weeks. Boone absolutely trashed the idea of a proven fringe talent like Darnold suddenly becoming good just because they were a high draft pick. (While Mackey nodded his head and agreed with the entire rant.) Darnold is who he is. He looks good in practice but cannot translate it to the games since pressure breaks him. McCarthy will be the starting QB no later than week 7.
@@jaarc1437He isn’t struggling. He is a rookie taking shots and feeling things out. And Judd’s opinions are biased based on his Vikings’ PTSD and need to wrap JJM in bubble wrap. I wrote that fastball no touch 100 times before we drafted him. Jefferson needs time to go attack the ball in the air. Never liked the pick for that reason. Sam needs to take us to the Super Bowl. Problem solved lol
Why? So he can be thrown into the fire like Darnold and lose his confidence? Just to name a few: Young, Mahomes, Rodgers, Favre all sat a year and turned into elite QB’s. Not saying JJ will, but it gives him the best chance to be successful. I don’t get why there are so many fans like you “well actually if JJ isn’t the starter or even 2nd string it looks bad”. Thank god you guys have no say over the actual team.
Gonna be funny when Mccarthy gets Josh Rosen treatment. When vikings go with darnold all year but win 4 Games vikings will be In position to draft alot better of a qb prospect then Mccarthy was . If your looking this bad against backups it's a yikes it's probably time to stop talking about the 3rd sting qb tho
You just paid JJ the highest amount of money in league history for a non QB. And the first year of a 4 year contract is a throw away just because you want to handle your future QB with kid gloves. I am sure McCarthy is just going to get a world of insight watching Sam Darnold be a QB he has never ever been in the NFL. I guess we will just cross our fingers and hope at least 2 times a year JJ is not on the bad end of a Kirby Joseph Knee shot from Sam Darnold. Then what? You have an entire training camp to get him ready.
You aren’t wrong about the incredible fear in this fanbase causing people to root for a journeyman backup to suddenly become better than he has proven to be over six years rather than rooting for the rookie to show out and become a stud. They’d rather delay the outcome for a year, despite zero evidence to support the idea that sitting has any value to the development of a rookie. Maybe if he was behind an HOF QB, sure. But the fear driving the projections is palpable.
Only thing I’ll note is that it is a four year extension. Jefferson is under contract five years through 2028 (with a void year in 2029 to smooth out the signing bonus over six seasons).
@@YamomzBB3 But 2 career journeymen can be ready to lead the team. Did Sam play on the Vikings last year? I do get it. Jj is going to be the third string qb this year. They don’t want to play him too early. Only way they want him to play is if the qb’s get injured. They don’t want him to get thrown in before he’s ready.
I actually think KOC told McCarthy not to expect to play the first year and I am good with it.
I’m glad it is Judd giving the camp report and not Mackey, Declan or Thor who would be too busy polishing McCarthy’s bust for Canton to give an objective review of how Darnold and McCarthy are doing.
Slightly depressing ngl lol
I wouldn’t read too much into it. Judd is afraid of his own shadow and Mackey has been trolling / playing devil’s advocate for the past few weeks.
Boone absolutely trashed the idea of a proven fringe talent like Darnold suddenly becoming good just because they were a high draft pick. (While Mackey nodded his head and agreed with the entire rant.)
Darnold is who he is. He looks good in practice but cannot translate it to the games since pressure breaks him. McCarthy will be the starting QB no later than week 7.
@@intrepidfoolyou have no clue tbh and neither does anyone else. Jjm is struggling vs third stringers rn so he needs a lot of time obviously
@@jaarc1437He isn’t struggling. He is a rookie taking shots and feeling things out. And Judd’s opinions are biased based on his Vikings’ PTSD and need to wrap JJM in bubble wrap. Go check some other reports. Man, this fanbase and their hot takes and fear syndrome. It is minicamp and practice. You guys are like Chicken Little in full on panic mode trying to convince yourselves that Sam “Seeing Ghosts” Darnold will magically become a superstar and the rookie is a bust because of reasons. It will be funny watching all of you change your tune as training camp moves on. Let the process play out people. I mean, wow.
@@intrepidfool go listen to purple insider where they explicitly said he struggled lmao. Your opinions don't matter and it'll be years before we know if jjm is any good but right now he isn't lol
Imagine trading up to take a QB tenth, to him not being able to beat out Darnold or Mullins!
Imagine not knowing how football works!
Darnold is going to light it up this season and this time next year you’re going to be complaining that the Kwesi didn’t have the foresight to lock him up for more than 1 year.
Jefferson should be subing for VanGinkle and participating in the punt competion and playing any position that needs help.
Dawg what are you smoking?
You packer fans just never stop huh?
Guessing Darnold is going to have a career year this year and will deserve a contract extension with the purple…
Even if darnold starts he's dealt with injuries every year of his career that he was a starter so he will miss some amount of time . The red flag will be if Mullens is the qb 2 this year
#3 QB? But he tweeted not to party in college! 😂😂😂
Can't listen to woke Phil anymore... disrespecting Kirk because of his religious beliefs. Turn off the woke news, buddy!
This is a shot a Rick Sosa, by the way.
What are you smoking? Woke? 👌🍻
The Christian majority is always crying about how persecuted they are. This is always the precursor to them persecuting others of course.
The absolute worst episode these two have put out since I started watching them a couple years ago.
So pretty much vikings want to waste a year of Mccarthy rookie deal lol why they even draft him dudes so bad he's behind Mullens lmao
I wrote that fastball no touch 100 times before we drafted him. Jefferson needs time to go attack the ball in the air. Never liked the pick for that reason. Sam needs to take us to the Super Bowl. Problem solved lol
If Mccarthy goes into the season as the number three QB. Not a good look for a 10th overall pick.
Can you read??? I said 3rd string.. If hes not the back up going into the season. Thats not a good look for a #10 overall pick....
McCarthy will see the field when he has checked all the boxes in what O'Connell has described as a detailed developmental plan. Likely next year.
I hope none of theae Qbs tries to turn into Darold -O chainz or Mccarthy - O chinz... Just be yourself
On Tuesday they are with later friends and go.
Mccarthy 100% will be a bust
You are clearly an expert on being a bust. Go to your own team’s fansite troll.
How could you possibly know that
You just paid JJ the highest amount of money in league history for a non QB. Then what? You have an entire training camp to get him ready.
it’s a 4 year extension so this year doesn’t count on the 4 years. So we have Jefferson for 5 years.
It’s in the best interest of the team to have JJ sit and learn one of the hardest offenses in the league
We want the best for JJ, But Sam Darnold is not leading this team to a Super Bowl. So JJ should be splitting the reps with the first team instead of Mullens. If your making the statement that JJ is the best equipped to succeed because of all the great players surrounding him, That does not include our 3rd stringers. What Happens if Darnold gets us to the first round of playoffs. Well Sam thanks for the great year but now i guess it's that magic time to just toss you aside and bring in JJ.
Nothing to drool over guys. JJ working with the getting cut squad and not even better then Jaren Hall. Yall should be concerned lol
Get some friends😂
Get a life big dog, you made a whole account just to troll a football team. Your mom is soooo proud loll😅
