The Christini AWD 300 2x2: How All Wheel Drive Works on a Dirt Bike

- Christini’s AWD Dirtbike uses mechanical all drive system that delivers power from transmission to front wheel. In this video, we will demonstrate how the AWD System works on Dirtbikes. It was created with hardenduro riders and races. This dirtbike 2x2 has been tested at Erzberg Rodeo, Last Man Standing, and many other tough enduro races around the world. In the year 2004, Yamaha also produced an AWD Enduro bike called the Yamaha WR450 2-TRAC 2x2. I like this Christini system because it can be mounted on KTM EXC 2 Strokes and GasGas 300, which is amazing because you get a 2 stroke with AWD 2x2.

Christini SA - All Wheel Drive Motorcycles
They should make one for a cr500 2 stroke
This is the cleanest two wheel design by far that I’ve ever seen on a dirtbike. Way to go christini! 🤙
I bought one, spent thousands on it, rode it 3 times, sold it for a loss. At times it was great, in the mud and tight single track... I thought it was worse. Had to remember to make sure the front end was pointed exactly where you want to go, every time the front end comes back down or it will throw you into the bushes or over a cliff. Different kind of riding, like changing from 4 stroke to 2 stroke... you have to ride it differently.
I own one, can view on my channel. The engineering involved by Steve Christini is genius. I own Geoff Aarons old Race Bike and my buddy has the clone to it. He's also owned the CHristini brand with the Gasgas motor in it.
The thought into this design is genius. I remember seeing information about it back in the early 2000's. Although, it always looked and seemed like an expensive maintenance nightmare. I am sure a rider with support in racing could definitely benefit in certain conditions.
Around 20 years ago Yamaha had the 2-wheel-drive WR 450 F2-Trac. It’s a hydraulic system and gives up to 30% to the front wheel depending on the wheel spin/traction loss of the back wheel. But this system looks also pretty cool especially for a retro fit.
Fun thing I've seen, someone back in the day made a 2wd by adding a hydraulic motor - the rear chain essentially drives a hydraulic pump which then moves the front wheel when needed. He briefly mentioned hydraulic pumps in his video, but not how they worked in this respect - I'd say it's as simple as a front electric motor... Without needing electricity
The fact they just snuck in an awd hybrid dirt bike in the end was amazing. That looks like an incredible piece of technology.
Definitely a game changer. I'm a semi professional rider & I rode a off road bike once for a few months. It'll make a big difference on almost every terrain . 👍
I'd heard of these years ago and believe there was military applications and that it was mainly being developed for that. I'd imagine electric motors now would trump this design if technology is here now for it. Would be just as fast , could be full time 2x2, and totaly stealthy as nearly silent compared to a gas engine. Battery weight likely the main issue, but the tech is growing very rapidly and I'm sure the military is on the cusp of it if anyone is. Enjoyed the video 👍👍👍
Awesome piece of equipment. Brilliant engineering 👏
A Christini has been on my Bucket list for years..
I would like to see a system such as this on an old Honda ATC three wheeler, an awd Big Red 250ES would be pretty cool imo.
Never knew of this design but it pretty damn clever. I am glad this video actually explained how it works.
Hell yeah what a brilliant idea I would have loved to have this system on my dirt bike when I had one and for the extra weight versus what is capable of doing I think it's probably worth it all day long
This is definitely a new take on 2WD bikes. I had a Rokon TrailBreaker back in the mid 1970"s. Rokon's are not "dirt' bikes though. They are slow and steady trail bikes for going where there is not a path. I think that they will go places the Christini will not, but the Christini is light years faster. The drive system was very different, too. The 2WD is full time and only cuts out on the front when the spring loaded clutch slips (by design). This seem very cool, and I wish it had been around when I was an active dirt biker, 30 years ago. LOL
This is an incredible invention for enduro style riding,
With all the new, highly efficient and lightweight e-bike technology, it would seem to be far simpler to add a small electric motor, for short term, momentary assist power to the front wheel, rather than the Rube Goldberg style mechanical systems.
Yamaha and ohlins were building a limited amount of 2wd dirt bikes in early 2000s using hydraulic drive system, a local bike shop had one of these bikes forsale about 15 years ago as I was tempted to buy it
This is one of the coolest things I've seen.
