I've gotten to the point with my teenager daughter that we can shop in different areas of the store. This definitely makes shopping easier (though she finds things that she neeeeeeds that are not things I want to buy for whatever reason).
I love thrifting!! I found a working KitchenAid mixer at my Goodwill today for $14.99!!! Has the bowl & attachments!! I already own one so it will go to one of my daughters or my niece.
Thank you for addressing my question about when you have a lack of thrift stores. We moved to a new state in 2022 and the thrifting here is definitely a challenge. The Goodwill’s are horrible. The houseware section is a stand the size of your laundry closet. The thrift store that is decent is small and does not have high turn over. And the town we live in is about 2 1/2 - 3 hours from a major city with thrift stores. We have a lot of really tiny towns like less than 100 people. It’s definitely making me learn to be content.
Wow, that really is challenging and very different from where we live. I didn’t realize how remote you were and feel my answer doesn’t apply as well to your specific situation, so I’m sorry I don’t have a better answer! Thanks for watching 🩵
@@yardsalesquad ha it’s okay. You tried. It did give me food for thought. The other thing very different here is that yard sales are usually Wednesday through Friday. Sales are very rarely on Saturday. Thursdays are the bigger sale day, but Wednesdays are not uncommon. If you wait until Saturday there won’t be anything.
Excellent video with great info. I am a long-time secondhand shopper. I raised two kids (now young adults), paid off our home mortgage, and became debt-free by going pre-owned and secondhand. It can be done!
I love your view on contentment and ability to find the positive side of just about any circumstance. I haven't done as much yard saling as I used to, mostly because we don't need as much these days. But my best yard sale find was a solid wood bunk bed for my boys' room. We bought it five years ago and my kids are still using it. The seller sold it to us for ten dollars, and then gave us a bean bag chair for free.
Thankyou for this thoughtful video, i really enjoyed the question and answer style and look forward to your videos each week! Keep up the good work you are such a blessing. Love from a thrifting mum in Australia 🦘
I love to thrift but appear to be addicted to kids clothing and toys! Baby things are soo easy to come by but there's less for older kids and I forget what I've already got!
I definitely feel you there! I have to actively restrain myself from buying kids things that we don’t need/don’t have space for because they’re just so cute!
Some years ago, I would host a yearly garage sale. We were in a great location. One year I invited a young couple to bring some of their things to sell (they actually showed up with a lot). I quickly had to let them know that we did not put things out that were not clean or broken. I had a reputation to keep up. :-) Have you ever hosted a garage sale?
My shoe size is small, Size 5 or 5 1/2 and that size is VERY limited in many thrift stores I go to. That is the problem in both large and small thrift stores, yard sales, etc. So....I always buy new for shoes. If you have a shoe size 7 or size 8, there are tons of shoes as that is the average American women's size shoes. Just curious though, how do you sanitize shoes from thrift stores? How do you sanitize coats that you cannot put into a washing machine?
I hear what you’re saying about having a hard to find shoe size. That is challenging! Depending on the shoe, I will throw in the washing machine or just set out in the sun, sometimes with fabric sanitizer. Coats that cannot be washed I send to the dry cleaners!
Fun tip to shop with kids - have them pick the prettiest and ugliest shirt on each rack of clothes. You are the judge. Works well if you have more than 1 kid. We’ve been doing this for years. Every time we get into a store they start looking for the uglier shirts. It’s pretty funny.

I understand your reasoning with the leather boots but I would just like to add that only poor quality leather alternatives flake. I have also invested in high quality boots but made from a leather alternative. I do this because I am ethically opposed to the leather industry. Thankfully there are some really great alternatives these days but you need to research and look for brands that pride themselves on their quality and check reviews. They will say it is a leather alternative with pride. If it is a brand that is quietly posing as leather but is actually fake, then you're going to get those poor quality materials and boots that don't last as long. I've had two great pairs for 5-8 years each and neither have any damage.
