    I have become solid in diagnostic work due to the premium channel. I now stay as member because I must continue to sharpen my skills regularly. This program will change your life due to the skill level you obtain. my peers now consider me as one of the best in town. I'm not bragging I'm simply saying it is a small investment considering my worth as a technician today. The cost of this channel in my honest opinion too cheap for a wealth of knowledge. You will never be able to learn all it offers but I promise it will change your life in many ways. The l1 patch I wear is a direct result of this channel.

    Bless you brother for starting off with a 🙏. When I got away from God for sometime, I thought I didn't need Him, boy was I wrong. I had a lot of trouble understanding everything OBD2. When I returned back to the Lord, everything I had read and every video you made connected, allowing me to understand everything I had read and watched. A lot of people don't know that when you walk away from God, He lifts the Wisdom from you until you return back to Him. When you do, you experience a breakthrough! God Bless!🚘🙏

    Used this today on a Ford EGR ESM. Scan tool was 5v and using diode mode and ohm mode, verified the computer showed proper voltage. Was awesome to see this working.

    I love the ohmmeter because of the lower voltage. I would use my body as a resistor because it would be a cool to do, but as you said, higher voltage will be induced into the signal wire. To me,using the ohmmeter is the safest out of all of them.

    I'm a confirmed atheist in that I do not believe in an all-seeing, all-knowing deity but the older I get and the more I see the more apparent it becomes that there's something in the human psyche the needs the focus that religion provides which humans need for our continued survival as a social species, on the whole. A few short years ago I would have scoffed at this prayer but given the vacuum left by people abandoning organised religion in droves in the west and seeing the resulting mess that's made of morals and community values and cohesion in favour of self-interest and consumerism, I now applaud it.

    Paul, you can explain the two circuits as "Logic", versus "Power". Logic circuits are very high resistance meaning direct shorts do very little if any damage due to the minute amount of current flow. A power circuit has higher amp flow which results in blown circuits when shorted or grounded. Logic circuits are for referencing changes for the control modules. Power circuits are for motor movement for what ever purpose as an EGR pintle movement. They require amps. Reference circuits do not require amps.

    At 43:00 I paused the video to try and think through why the higher impedance test light would not show a full 5V coming through the signal wire. Evidently the internal volt meter inside the PCM does not have 10M ohms resistance, so current spills through to ground more easily than a typical multimeter. Then it boils down to a simple voltage divider question. If the test light has, say, 800 ohms resistance, and the internal voltmeter has 1000 ohms resistance, then the drop across the test light would be 2.2 volts (5*800/1800), leaving 2.8 volts for the PCM to see through the internal voltmeter. So, there's a 3 bears sweet spot for sensor test lights! You want enough resistance that is doesn't fry downstream parts, but not so much resistance that the downstream devices can't see the full swing of what they are following. The practical upshot is not to expect to see a full swing of voltage there.

    doing the conversion that otc test light has around a 1.8 watt bulb, so seems as long as people use around the 2 watt range and under they should be safe.i wrote this because after testing my test lights the harbor freight test light draws around 280ma at 12v where otc puts out around 145ma at 12v so a big difference between the two

    Been following and watching for years...we have talked before actually and I have even chatted with your Brother in the past. You have impacted this trade in a positive way more than anybody else I can think of, and your diagnostic "philosophy" has reached so far and wide that it is impossible to measure. My reputation as a good diag tech that led me to a Career with Snapon as a Diagnostic rep I owe to you. I have been able to travel internationally teaching and lecturing other techs...always recommending your channel and book at the end. Dont be dismayed at a bit of hate you might receive because of your public display of your faith.. it was a promise in Scripture that it would happen in John 15 vs 18 to 21
    "18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
    19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
    20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
    21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me."
    I am a Christian and i learn things everyday from unbelievers...we all do. And most unbelievers could care less about your faith, if they like you and what you can teach them. even if 99 percent of your followers are unbelievers only a small percent will be so upset at your public display of religion they would dump you. It would only hurt themselves in the long run. But even if you lost 100 percent of your followers...still wouldn't matter. Your treasure is in heaven. Keep doing what you do...and God Bless you Brother!

    42:44 Ohms Law doesn't apply to LEDs they have what's called a non linear current characteristic.
    For example with an incandescent test light a small increase in voltage will mean a proportional small increase in current and the light will glow brighter. This follows Ohms law (voltage is proportional to current) with an LED however a small increase in voltage will cause a huge increase in current. The increase in current is unpredictable and will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from LED to LED.

    Hello, I watched the whole video and found it very informative.
    I was really glad that you had actually selected a TPS sensor for your illustration because it is the sensor that has given me a reading which has not been able to be diagnosed by ANYONE. Tried to sorted it out myself, took to a couple of mechanics and posted some questions on different sites. NEVER GOT A SATISFACTORY EXPLANATION to some even closely related.
    I will give you the details and would ask that you address this condition in a video , and hopefully it can help others in a similar situation.
    On the video you show the alternatives, expected results and basically a NARROW range of values which, once interpreted, discards other options and points to a choice with a reasonable degree of certainty, and as you well pointed out 100% certainty in life is not the norm, however it is achievable after "enough" testing and analysis is performed.
    My problem is that I have the engine off, key on, obviously RPM is zero and the air being pulled into engine is also ZERO.
    TPS connector is pulled off and my code reader shows MAF at around 135g/s ( idle is about 5.5g/s ) crazy but understandable ,
    THE CRAZY PART IS TPS % keeps on increasing by itself, without any action being performed, It has gone as high as about 43%.
    How can the % climbing be explained? All the examples you give the reading is for all intent and purposes "static" and I keep getting this raising value. In my head it goes something like the current is running through some limiter ( resistor) and as the current passes the resistance drops and the Volts increase ( as read by the reader). turn off the ignition and after while the whole process repeats itself. Does it make any sense at all, if so where is this component that has resistance dependent on temperature? could it be that some short exists between the MAF heating element ( keeps getting hotter and resistance drops and voltage goes up) Or what is the cause in case my reasoning is wrong. Please let me know if you have something in your channel that addresses this, and I can go subscribe to it.

      Not worried about the key on engine off MAF values. Those are not valid until you have an RPM signal. The TPS % rise is a problem. (The MAF is steady right?)

      I didn't want to overwhelm you with information. I really appreciating you giving it a try. The climbing value has me completely lost and additionally this has been an intermittent problem.
      Here is the information 2002 Buick Century about 150K miles.
      IN REPLY TO YOUR QUESTION. Answer: MAF reading remains constant. TPS % creeps up.
      THINGS I HAVE DONE
      I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator ( the regulator was actually leaking)
      I replaced the IAC . The one in the car was showing excess carbon on the tip) A lot of hope went into this decision, the original probably could have been cleaned and would be alright., NO CHANGE
      The PCV valve, the tube and the rubber "U"that runs to the EVAP sensor. The "U" tube was collapsing . "U" tube now is Ok. ( I thought that some air leakage could be occurring. APPARENTLY NOT
      Throttle body and IAC seat were cleaned . Problem persists
      MAF sensor was cleaned. N/C
      Air duct was checked for leaks None that I have been able to see or hear, N/C
      Brake booster vacuum hose, Pulled and plugged, NO effect on high RPM. N/C
      Physically checked and throttle linkage seems to be shut.
      I have opened the throttle for a moment and see on an Autel READER thatTPS % go up, bring throttle back down reading goes as low as about 3% and then reading starts to go up. It looks like an auction, TPS% VALUES bounce back and forth within a very narrow range, but steadily climbs, It takes a few minutes to reach to a high TPS %
      RPM's If starts normally shortly after It first goes to 1300-1400 range then 1500-1700-1800 then 2000 the 2300-2400. Once I had as high a 3400RPM.
      Turned off the car for a while, started again, started normal but soon TPS % was acting again.
      Brought home and been trying to figure this thing out now for about 30 days.
      The only thing I have been able to have some faith in is that - air is going through the engine- BUT how is that air is coming in remains the mystery.
      I had an event that I drove for 40 minutes and EVERYTHING WAS "NORMAL"
      I actually owned and drove the car for about one week, the rest has been trying to figure out what causes this.
      Initially the car ran without problems.
      Then I slowly started to notice that deceleration wasn't as fast ( I came to know that the engine was revving up)
      To come to a stop, shift to neutral and sometimes turn off the car because the RPM's are so high that people are looking at me.
      To start moving, the "BANG" when I shift into Drive. I'm sure the transmission will be next to go.
      I really appreciate if you can give me some tips on what to look for- I don't have a scanner at this moment, but bought a TECH2 clone on ebay, out of desperation, to see if I can read the IAC valve and see if it tells me something.
      I went to the PCM and noticed that someone had either worked on it or tried to. The plastic cover on the top connector has some broken tabs, apparently the one who did, wasn't aware that the tabs have to be "squeezed" to be separated from the aluminum part of the connector.

      @@dveloso150 you have a bad engine computer. Like I've said, I've seen this. In fact, I even talked about my case study (just like yours) with my class at Rosedale Technical College (where I teach).
      If your TPS voltage is steady when measured at the sensor and at the computer pin, and you are seeing a TPS voltage or % rise on the scan tool, you have a bad ECM.
      The TPS rise is causing the computer to open the IAC valve which is why you have a very high idle at times.

      @@ScannerDanner I have a lot of respect for you. You took the time to reply and " CLEARLY" stated your position and the reasoning behind. Nowadays this is getting very hard to find. No one has the " balls" to stand by their convictions. There is always a " weasel" clause.
      I can take your statement and " as a big boy" decide entirely on my own whether or not to follow it. The other position is, that quite a few are nothing more than self proclaimed experts, that when the going gets though they ' find an excuse to save face". Life offers no guarantees , it is a risky business. I will do my best ( don't really know how good that is, but that's what I got), when I received my clone scanner, try to make some sense of what I am reading , and go from there. I know for sure that if I do nothing, I will get nothing. Let's play ball!!!!
      I will inform you of the end results and hopefully you can incorporate this event into something that may help others in a similar situation.

      @@dveloso150 Thanks man, and without seeing the car in person, I can't be 100%. But what I can tell you with 100% certainty. The TPS% on your scan tool is matching your intermittent high idle speed complaint. Here is why:
      Within the programming of an engine computer is an IAC increase or opening, every time there is a TPS voltage rise (opening). This is there to prevent decel stalling issues. When your foot is on the gas pedal, the computer opens the IAC to prepare beforehand, for the moment you let off the throttle. Then is will slowly close the IAC to bring the throttle back to normal idle. You can see this effect on every car. Just sitting is park, if you snap the throttle, you will notice the RPM rise rapidly, then on the deceleration event, you will notice the RPM sort of hangs for a bit before coming back down. This IS the IAC effect on this system and is for decel stall prevention. A sudden accel followed by you slamming on your brakes so you don't hit something, is a period where we would get a stall if this wasn't in place.
      I hope I am making sense.
      Now, back to the 100% part. I am 100% sure that your TPS % should NOT be rising without you touching the throttle. Your high idle that corresponds to this TPS% rise on your scan tool tells us that this is absolutely legit data (not a scan tool issue).
      So your final steps to confirm this issue is to monitor the TPS voltage signal directly to make sure that the voltage is in fact NOT changing. If it is changing, then we move away from the computer. If it is NOT changing, while you are seeing a TPS% rise on the scan tool then we move toward the computer as the fault.
      Like I said too, I have seen this EXACT problem on this EXACT model car :-) Customer had a 3000 RPM idle speed complaint and it was super dangerous! I could see the TPS voltage rise on the scan tool and a corresponding IAC opening is reaction to it, confirming the high idle was being commanded by the computer, because it thought my foot was on the throttle. When I checked the TPS voltage directly, it stayed at about .6 of a volt the entire time! IT never moved. And I even checked it right at the computer pin and it was steady there too. So a new ECM was the fix. (really weird issue)
      Last comment, you mentioned some weird MAF data. We don't really care about this for this issue BUT it could certainly be a part of the computer failure too. Just an fyi

    Another comment on the integrity of the wires towards a computer: inside any ECU there are inverse polarity diodes for transient voltage protection. On every input and output including power lines. In order to check the integrity of a wire one can measure the voltage drop between the wire and ground of the car using the diode tester on the DMM. Negative on the wire, positive on the ground. Current will flow through the protection diode biasing it forward and opening it. The voltage drop would be around 0.5V. Hope this will help anyone sometime.

    Ivan from Pine hollow diagnostic burnt think module for power windows with incandescent test light. Altough I watch all your videos on free youtube channel and you always did it with incandescent test light. If I remember on one Ford you use led test light for cranck sensor testing. I have your book and helped me a lot, as yours explanation, thanks a lot.

      @@ivandrago2557 I tried to find it but it is too confusing on what exactly he is doing and why and when he caused the issue. Sorry, but I don't have time to watch this 4 part series to see exactly what happened.
      I will say this, those signals he mentioned as "communication" looked like hall effect signals to me (motor movement monitoring) This would explain why when stationary, sometimes the signals were the same and sometimes opposite. This just simply was a window or trigger wheel within the hall effect signals sitting in different stationary positions.
      What he did with that orange wire with his test light, he never showed that I could see.

    First off, thank you scanner Danner for sharing your in depth knowledge and being so passionate.
    I have 2 questions: with a sensor whose portion of the 5v ref circuit Having a bias resistor, why wouldn't you see the bias when back probed at the signal wire? Is it because it has ground when plugged in?
    Second, when is the bias voltage applied from PCM through the signal wire? When you first turn keyon before start and then in engine run the 5v coming from the 5v ref wire is then applied into the signal wire? If you understand what I'm asking.
    I understand for the most part how it works just not clear I. That part. Your feed back is much appreciated. Thank you.

      1. You will see it, but only when the sensor is unplugged or when there is an open signal wire
      2. That bias is there all the time! The second the ECM wakes up

      @@ScannerDanner ok and as soon as you apply the throttle and the signal needle moves off idle position, then the Pcm Starts to receive signal voltage coming from the sensor? (What's left of the incoming 5 volt ref based on position of the sensor)

    Sensor Mass Air Flow
    But the problem was from the fuel pressure regulator stuck.
    Examined by injector oscilloscope
    It was intact for the duration of the opening of the fuel injector, as well as the shutdown.
    Long term - 17 and short term - 10

      A moment when you test the fuel.

      Use Purge control solenoid valve (PCSV)
      Separate the connected hoses and connect them directly to the fuel fumes passing.

    For Paul. I was watching your video on wiring integrity. Someone was being sarcastic. The closest to 5k ohms resistor made is 4.7 k ohms. You can use two 10 k ohms in parallel.

      or just use your DMM or test light instead as explained further in the video, thanks! The resistor actual number was not very important, it was just being used as a buffer in case the signal wire was shorted to ground or you accidentally jumped the wrong pins

    Teach as always i appreciate this vid thanks for sharing this with us so much to learn in this video, you have been telling us about this technique for years, this one really stands out. Your basically teaching us how to diagnose the circuit the way the computer does it, and how the computer figure what fault code to send."This information here will not be written on a flowchart" but you are able to put us in the mind of the engineers and how they design the computer to function.
    Also thanks for the tip flies have very low integrity just use a zap lol.

    You could use the ohmmeter to identify the ground wire by measuring continuity between a known good ground and the wires.

    There was one edge case where Ivan was working with a door module due to window problems, and his use of an incandescent test light actually fried a reference circuit in the module (I forget what the video was, I'm sure someone will remember). I forget what he did to fix the problem but he got the window working without having to buy a new module.

    Hi sir, can you connect the test light to the signal wire and body ground for circuit integrity check? Same thing, can you connect the test light to the ground wire and battery positive? It won't fry the computer?

    Your content is great.I love it. I got a quick question..when u jump the ref wire to the signal wire using a LED test why does the voltage drop to 2.7 when compared to incandescent light(5v). There is no current flow through the test light so there shouldn’t be any voltage drop for LED test light no matter how much resistance it has.

      It wasn't the reference circuit for that test, that was the 5v bias on the signal circuit. Make sense?

      @@ScannerDanner thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. But sorry Paul.. I still don’t get it.. I think you might have got my question wrong. I will try to be clear. At exactly 40:24 min of the video u say “the internals of the sensing circuit doesnot support current flow”. I get that and that is why the incandescent light didnot light when you jumped 5v ref wire to signal wire to check the integrity of that wiring(scanner showed 4.9v).
      You have also mentioned in your other videos that it is basic principle that you won’t have voltage drop if you don’t have current flow through a resistor.
      My question is when you jumped 5v reference wire to signal wire with LED Test light the scanner showed 2.7 volts instead of 4.9v(compared to incandescent). How did that drop occur if there is no current flow through test light(light didn’t turn on)???
      Ps- my question is in reference to the test on this video at 39:20
      With Test title “using a test light to jump the 5v ref and signal wires”

      Doesn't support "measurable" current flow would be a more accurate statement. There is current flow, otherwise we wouldn't have had a drop on that LED light.

      I never much liked those. Sounds like a NATEF task list.
      "Student will be able to read and record trouble codes" for example.
      A 7 year old can do that right?
      I'm sure you're referring to something more than that but
      I've always expected my students to practice their fundamentals and when they're not sure what to do next, to go park there asses in front of a computer screen and start researching description, operation and testing. Then do the tests, then come ask me.
      The ones that could do that always succeed.
      We ran a live shop at the school btw

      When we were kids, we had 4 Jim's in our friend group and so they all got last names only. Even mom started calling him Danner and still does to this day. My kids sometimes even call him Uncle Danner 😂

    Okay, I believe I won't hurt the signal sensing circuit with an incandescent test light that flows less than 200 milliamps. Will I hurt the 5 volt reference circuit or the sensor ground circuit if I inadvertently connect that same test light to those circuits?

    A little confused.. When jumping 5v supply to signal wire on a good circuit, why does using an incandescent vs led light change the scantool data? I imagine that circuit as having no current flow, it just feeds the pcm internal voltmeter. A5k ohm resistor may not even register a voltage then.

      It has some current flow! Just like your digital voltmeter does as i showed earlier in this presentation. Great question! No current flow = no voltage drop right?

    Hey this if for scanner and every one I just got the new autel at home on the weekend playing with the scope decided to scope the map sensor and my signal wire was 5v but random spikes to 10volt checked the 5vlt ref same thing went to the egr same thing basically what would cause quick spikes in voltage on a 5 vlt ref

      @@ScannerDanner on a Hall effect crank sensor the 5 volts that comes through the sensor passes an goes through back to the ground,but inside the sensor there's a sweeper that fluctuates the 5 volts voltage everytime the fly wheel spins and sends a signal back to the pcm.im a DIY mechanic all the way from Trinidad and I'm trying to understand how inside the sensor itself works

      If you want to learn from the beginning, that's even more reason to get the premium subscription. There's lots to learn without the subscription; south main auto, pine hollow auto diagnostics, and scannerdanner's channel (there are a few other solid channels, too) will get you some good case studies. For the basics, and classroom style environment, you can't beat premium. You'll be glad you did!

      The premium subscription gives you so much it's almost overwhelming. The lectures on universal testing methods (first section of the book) alone will take you to a different level. It's a good mix of lecture and pratical examples, with links to additional videos on the subject. Costs more for lunch around here than premium costs each month.
