Häkkinen vs Schumacher was one of the best F1 rivalries ever!
umm Senna vs Prost...Lauda vs Hunt...Fangio vs Ascari...just to name a few...
@mrtheoden that's why he said one of the best. Not the best.
I realise that. I just don't think it's as high on the rivalry list as he thinks though.
mrtheoden it's as high. take of your nostalgia glasses buddy.
Senna v Prost - Mansell v Piquet - Lauda v Hunt >>>>>>>
The best thing about this rivalry was the camaraderie between the two. Hakkinen never failed to congratulate Schumi if he did well. He was not a salty person whatsoever. The rivalry also brought out the absolute best from both drivers.
Totally agree. Both fierce rivals since their F3 days but very much respected each other. Ask Schumi who he respected and feared the most and always says Mika.
also they were very good friends off track... thats a rivalry that we can all always remember we who watched those amazing races
Really? Just because they aren't fighting, doesn't mean great relationship. They are so cold towards each other during paddock. And Hamilton asking, if Vettel crashed him purposely THIS YEAR, isn't really a sign of friendship.
@@patrickr4762Setsuna Yuki and Johnny Herbert also said Hakkinen.
1:40 Oh no they need another Re-upload
1:46 Oh, everythings fine
Alexis Diego specially me xD
That day Michael was very unlucky, but now my hero has to win the most important battle of his entire life

His health isnt going to be better
@Dominik Pialek how do you know? have you spoken with him?
@@notickar1868 i will never lose hope
hes been out of coma for years god stop already
It is clear that he is not going better. He still suffered deep coma. That is confirmation.
Mika is simply likeable.
That clip of Mika explaining his overtake to Michael at Spa is one of my favorite things in F1. And the top gear bit where he taught James May how to drive is also great
#KeepFightingMichael ❤
Ayaan Mathur He means Michael’s recovery you idiot.
As much as i like the positivity, i think there is not much to fight anymore, his condition is not going to get better but at least he is alive.
@@quintin_rsa8701 We dont know. He might already have passed away and his family keeps it a secret to protect his fans and themselves...
@@MaidikIslarj he is alive surely tbey won't lie about that.

As a Schumacher fan, this was the best Hakkinen vs Schumacher season!
5th!
The two best rivals in F1
5h!
Ahhh the good old days!
The glory days of F1...before it became a circus and battle of corporations
I remember this race, it was the first season I followed closely. Schumacher overtook so many cars early on, but had a tough time getting past Damon Hill who defended stubbornly. I think Hill’s team told him to let him through but he refused, which isn’t surprising considering their history. Schumacher destroyed his tires trying to overtake Hill. Probably didn’t matter in any case since Hakkinen was way ahead anyways but it was a shitty end to an intense season.
Actually he couldnt overtake hill. He only took the position when damon went into his scheduled pitstop. It was a nice fight as damon was also trying to overtake villeneuve. 3 world champions within a sec for some laps.... it was nice.
My first season too - but I loved it coz I supported Hakkinen back then.
I think it's more likely he ran over some debris from the collision between Esteban Tuero and Toranosuke Takagi, which had happened at the final chicane the lap before right in front of the Ferrari. But that's speculation, I don't know for sure.
Damm Demon Hill the only Williams I remembered and Jack Villenue the WC a year before.
why would Jordan tell Damon to let MSC through when they were still fighting for 3rd in constructors and Ralf was out of the race? doesnt make any sense
I almost lost it when it says "...Finland's first World Champion..." ALMOST! Already raised my hand to facepalm, but I didn't. Move on... Mika Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher are the reason why I watch F1. God bless em all

What a legendary racer you are Michael!
hakkinen is one of the best driver and my favorite too.
Agreed, he was a clean and gentlemen driver unlike Hamilton.
@@wongkahheng9904 Hamilton is clean unlike Crashtappen
Ditto. He's earned respect on and off the track.
I remember how gracious Schumacher was after this heartbreak, he said something like “you can’t complain, the world is still turning and we have a chance again next year”
Hakkinen and Raikkonen are interview brothers. Classic Finland Ice-Men :D
Hakkinen and Raikonen must be related. They both share the same enthusiastic expression when claiming a WC.
Ikr, it almost seems like they're from the same country
Hahaha
The golden age of F1. Remember it like it was yesterday that I watched this season finale.
The first ever full F1 season that I watched from beginning to the end....and what time to start watching F1 it was,as a Finn, to witness Mika winning those 2 championships!
It was quoted that Hakkinen was the only driver Schumacker was weary of on track....
Says a lot that
You mean 'wary' lol.
Their respect towards each other makes this the best rivalry in F1 imo.
What a year of F1! What an era! What a rivalry! What a grid of cars!
The best good looking car ever made till now ... West Mclaren Mercedes ...
yupp and 2005-6 mclarens aint bad either but that mcl13 is legendAry
I love the cars 98s , are very beatifull :)
1976 Lauda retired
1990 Prost retired
1998 Schumi retired
2006 Schumi retired
2012 Alonso retired
2017 Vettel retired
if ferrari retired in japan, they won't win the championship
Not 2017
2012 alonso
In fact in 2000 and 2003 Ferrari has won the championship in Japan! What a coincidence
Dhanis Adistira Bramantya Mathematically it's not true. Vettel can have DNF at Sazuka, in the USA and even in Mexico, but considering, that Hamilton won't score any point through these 5 races. In this case it would've been a draw.
Schumi Jr. and what is it mean? sorry i dont get it
i really miss those times.
Those were the days! :)
Ahh, the memories!❤
Always in our hearts, dear Schumi! 🏁🚗💕

I still remember Schumi worn a beautiful chequred flag helmet.
A maior rivalidade que eu vi. E os dos carros mais belos de todos os tempos Ferrari e Mclarin 98 00
This was when F1 was a little more diversitive. Not the same man/team winning 3-4 years in a row , and of course the roaring engines. When me and my friends went to Hockenheim , many of the drivers walked out of the paddock , all the way to the fences and actually talked to the fans for almost 20 minutes after the very first practice. It was really cool to see/hear them talk and joke with everybody like any other guys. It brought them to a human level and my respect for all of them grew as race drivers.
What was great about Mika-Michael rivalry was the mutual respect they had for each other, never talking bad about the other in the media. Michael mentioned Mika as the only driver he fears on track and that's something considering the number of great drivers he dueled with.
Hakkinen vs M. Schumacher even in 2024 is considered to be the best ever rivalry.
I remember this live. So much love for mika.
Thank you Mika for the many many.. many awesome memories
I remember this race fondly. Mika made short work of it,just flawless.
Back when F1 still felt like F1
I remember watching that race! Glorious as a McLaren fan.
i was watching to .then from 2001 im an alonso fan ,imagine what i felt back in 2005 .something similar you felt in 98
What a race by Schumacher !!! from last to 3rd in 30 laps
O homem de gelo terror das pistas. Depois de Schumacher sem duvida o melhor piloto naquele periodo
I can't forget this day because I was there and went to Suzuka with my Mercedes.
Congrats Mika.
Real Racing and Real noise! 👍👍
When Mclaren used to fight for the World Championship rather than at the back of the field - remember those days?
1998- Drivers World Champion
2018- Dreaming of Q3
@@theicekiller7574 Hello, I'm from the future. It gets better :)
Back when Newey made a dominate car…
back when they had real engines and not just toys
Seems like you've forgotten 2011 and 2013
The car was good but it had many technical issues which made the title fight close (Häkkinen lost many places due to failing equipment). The Ferrari on the other hand was like a tank.
@@Athrun82 Yeah Schumacher's Ferrari was stable on 3 wheels after the Coulthard crash in Belgium.
Michael J too bad these 'real engines' had less power than the modern v6 turbo hybrids .
Queste si che erano gara questi si che erano piloti
feels like yesterday but 1998 was quite a while back.
The pinnacle of modern motorsports at the highest stage - Ferrari vs Mclaren, Michael vs Mika. Epic rivalry and much respect.
One of the most emotional Fins IMO
Hakkinen was one of a few pilots who could to equally fight against the great Shumacher. It's a pity he choose to stop run so early in him carrier.
I was there. E stand. means first corner.
In winning lap I saw Mika crying. So I did.
Great champ.
mika and michael, the friendliest rivalry in f1
What a start by Schumi! 1:08
Finlands in fórmula 1 are so emotional
They probably are, but there are some known phrases in the Finnish language to not take too much pride over your achievements or then you will have a bad reputation and not viewed as a good person. This is probably present in other countries too but doesn't play an as big role in the culture.
What a legend.
There were only two drivers that really challenged Michael Schumacher, the first was of course the great Senna, and the second was the great Mika Hakkinen. I'm a life long Ferrari fan (Tifosi) and love Schumacher...But Mika has my up most respect !! What a great champion and what a great man. Love ya Mika, 20 years has gone so fast ! Can't wait for 20 more. Congratz Mika !!
Maybe this has been said already but Keke Rosberg was the 1st Finnish wolrd champion in F1, Häkkkinen is loved by all finns. (Rosberg 1982, Häkkinenx2 1998 1999, Räikkönen 2007, Rosberg 2016 (Keke's son Nico dual citizen Finnish-German)
Cried with Kimi brilliant day 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Darn it Mika, that question was the perfect opportunity to make a pun about a "stalled" start XD

Another one? Maybe next year since that would be 5 years on.
I'd like to see official footage of the accident and onboard cameras from him and drivers directly behind him. We need to see what happened on that wet straight line that made him lost control.
@@MacGovernor no it's so sad there is raw footage that appeared it was awful hope they dont it
It’s a shame, he spent about 20 years racing at insane speeds without any injuries, he retires and goes skiing and has a horrific accident which has led him in a coma.
He did snap his legs in Silverstone 1999.
Still remember that race! The simple fact that Michael took the fight to the very last race with a car so inferior to McLaren and the incident Coulthard caused at Spa (for which himself and McLaren should have been banned for a few races) is nothing less of remarkable! I respect Mika, but with this rocket ship he should have won the title mid-season it was actually embarrassing! Michael was so unlucky that year...
cry
@@luis-yx6jz he is stating pure facts
I used to think the same, but Hakkinen had his share of bad luck too. He had gearbox problems in Canada and Imola and got taken out in Belgium. Mika beat Michael fair and square in Austria (where Michael made mistakes) and at the Nurburgring. Michael pulled off brilliant wins in Italy and Hungary, but Hakkinen was for sure a worthy champion

I was too young back then to watch the 1998 title fight, but it seems to be one of the better title fight in f1 history, this year was pretty good too, but it'll probably come to an end before abu Dhabi
now that was propper f1
Until this title Hakkinen suffered to reach him. He caught up with a troubled McLaren after 1993, suffered a serious accident in Adelaide in 1995. He saw his teammate win before in 1996. Hakkinen's first victory came only in 1997 and finally in 1998 the title.
That engine stalled,still hurts!!!!!
Funny how they have have the volume turned right down on the old footage of the cars so you can’t hear how good they sound...
Yeah. I dont get why they put these no name garbage tracks playing over. Just give us the original audio with clips of the commentary added in.
They don't want us to hear how bad the current cars sound compared with the good old days!
Feel like the background music kinda killed the mood in his emotional conference

I still believe Schumi was the greatest driver(mostly), but you can see he had such a beast of a car. when starting from the back he takes 4 cars before turn 1.
Mclaren was a much faster car that year but Schumi still took it down to the wire
