The fact that hakkinen was the driver Schumacher respected the most says it all, one of the best of all time for me
And they were friends the entire time.
It’s like vettel and lewis
Like Hunt and Lauda
@@markhenley3097 hakkinen has said that they were not friends.
@@DavidGarcia-oi5nt Bullshit. Even in a recent interview Mika said he will always pray for Michael. And Mika and Senna are the only drivers Michael respected.
Remember, he never actually retired.. he's just on a really long sabbatical.
He actually did retire before the 2002 German GP.
@EL DIABLO Hakkinen replacing Bottas at Mercedes in 2021 confirmed?
Fun fact: He was testing for McLaren in 2004-2007 or somewhere in that time for his return (i dont remember). They were doing like laps or taking times on a track or airport and he was really planning to come back.
But then they had a problem with the car that they used the entire day to fix and Mika remembered that was the exact reason he took the sabbatical. He was too fed up in all problems and troubleshooting in F1.
Cool story tought I could share.
@John Lemon u mean Seb Vettel lol
I never realised he was only 33 when he drove his last race in '01. Just like Vettel who will be 33 when he'll drive his last race for Ferrari this year, and will probably retire(or go on a 1 year sabattical?)
Honorary mention: Mika comforting Michael after him equalling Senna's record.
You mean...
The Michael
The9der
That moment was beautiful, respect between two legends
Agreed. That was a great moment for F1.
While Ralf sat next to him with a stone-face. :)
Agreed,i 100 % agree
Such a genuine level of respect between Hakkinen and "The Michael", is what made their rivalry so special.
Besides Schumacher trying to put him into the wall on the Kemmel, sure.
Michael lacked the race-craft CLASS that Mika had, that's why Mika is unanimously revered by fans, because not only was he fast and won two world championships, but he indisputably did it fairly at all times.
Finland, land of great drivers.
It started way back at Macau F3 Grand Prix in 1990. Michael brake tested Mika in the second race knowing that if Mika just stayed behind, he would had won the two races aggregate having won the first one by a comfortable margin. Mika crashed out with Michael's damaged car with no rear wing cruised to win. That sting was there until Mika won the title in 1998.
@@neblinasp both in rally and f1
He may have meant 'though michael' but maybe i missed something
When you realize he was practically dead for 3 days, woke up and came back and won 2 championship titles is just amazing!
Wdym
A syarif he was in a coma
@@achmadsyarif8753 It was even explained in the video. Crash in Adelaide, break your skull etc. Spend 2 or 3 days in coma, come back to F1 and win two titles in '98 and '99
EDIT: my bad in the vid they speak about "few days" and didn't find any legit enough info how long was the period actually. Anyway he was basically dead for time.
@@moonchant You forgot the 5 weeks in the hospital.
That is SISU!
Mika Hakkinen is probably the model F1 racer: great sportsman, cool as a cucumber and one of the naturally fastest ever.
To this day my number 1 sports hero of all time.
Interestingly enough you could be describing Kimi Raikkonen IMO. The two Finns are class acts.
Most meme worthy post race interview replies ever.
Yes.
Hakkinen was and always will be the best to me.
1999 Mika hakennin world champion all cause schumacher injured in a accident and was away for few races ...
It was Mika vs Eddie Irvine fighting for the championship.
@@user-2203xyz "Anything can happen in Formula 1, and it usually does."
"F1 is IF spelled backwards."
Senna said so himself after leaving McLaren "they will be in good hands. He's(Hakkinen) definitely going to be a future world champion"
And since both, Hakkinen and Schumacher fought against their idol and learned so much from him, both would indeed be amazing champions. And they were. This video is awesome.
He is actually a bad development driver, i think someone said that, he is good but isnt actually really good at developing car
@@tilentgamer8758 yes, he is indeed very fast but not good at developing the car.
Senna also said that Frentzen was a huge talent that Williams should sign. And they kicked out Hill. And Frentzen was not even close.
If only Senna lived long enough to race with them
And Palmeiras Não Tem mundial
One more mention: he taught James May how to drive quickly
Impossible
At least he tried 🤣🤣🤣
Great driver but a bad teacher. :)
He taugh James May how to drive quickly and that made James May only average driver in Finland
Well at least he tried to teach him scandinavian flick :D. Fun to watch.
what a legend he is. truly one of the sport's greatest! many many legendary moments! a shame he had such an unlucky 2001 season, which led into retirement. imagine an all-Finnish-lineup at mclaren in 2002 with him and young kimi raikkonen.
A garage of complete Nordic silence. Now that would have been championship material
Ive heard that after the birth of his first child his heart wasnt in it any more. He had 2 championships and nothing left to prove at the time so i cant blame him.
@@Ghiaman1334 Häkkinen is very chatty for a Finn.
@karel bellic "Would you kindly tell us why are you both so silent?"
Kimi and Mika "Why not?"
'minimum talking'
If he had not been racing against one of the greatest of all time he would have won many more titles. He was the driver who challenged Micheal in his prime.
You mean, “The Michael” 😂
Alonso, Kimi and Montoya too
True that !
Well that's a silly statement of paradox isn't it. He wasn't the best, so didn't deserve more titles. Mika was one of my favorites, how could you not like the guy, and what a sensational driver, but he also made too many mistakes in his career, and lets face it, 1999 was made a little easier for him with Shumachers accident and Irvine have some ridiculous perfomances.
@@markmark5269 I highly doubt that even if micheal was there in 1999 he would have won the title. Mika was too consistant.
Honorable mention: The water fight with Eddie Irvine.
I was waiting for that one😂
When Mika returned with an empty jar. He is really determined.
"No I would not do that Eddie don't worry"
*A few moments later*
"Right, that's it!" 😂
@@zubair_aslam Eddie, I'm sorry😂
@@zubair_aslam "I've got nothing to do with that"
I was a Schumacher fan watching these two as a kid, but I appreciate Mika so much now looking back. That half-smile of his, especially the one after "the Michael", is so good. I appreciate Kimi and Valtteri and their own personalities, but we need another "wry" humour like Häkkinen in the paddock again.
Did you just compare Valtteri to Mika and Kimi?
Don't ever do that again. Thanks.
Dude, same here, out of all the rivalries in F1, I love this one the most, always clean, no bulshit and drama, just pure driving, pure racing, pure pressure
@Matej Zizza Kimi has won more races than Hakkinen or Valtteri, and Kimi at his peak was insane should have won 2 more world titles in 2003 and 2005 - his car let him down. They are not comparable. Raikkonen is an all time great who destroyed peak Coulthard by a bigger margin than Hakkinen did. Bottas is just average. I repeat, Kimi and Mika in one group, Salo, Bottas and Heikki in the other.
@@ciaronsmith4995 I never compared them results-wise, only as personalities. I know exactly how much you love Kimi already so your efforts are a bit wasted here.
@@FightingTorque411 Mika is also a great driver. There is no love here, just objectivity. Bottas not so much.

Mika was my hero when i first started watching F1. Everyone else loved Schumacher but Mika was my guy. Nice to see some highlights of him.
You were not the only one. Same happened to me :D Everyone was cheering for Schumi, and I was Mika all the way!
Same for me. Even my father loved Schumi, but Mika was my favorit.
Same 😉
You and me both. That rivalry only comes once in a while and those two were absolutely amazing drivers.
same. he was our hero.
The Michael VS Mika was one of the best times in F1 history.
you can't not say The Michael and not think of this rivalry.
I'm still in love with that West McLaren Mercedes livery. Such a beautiful car
The fact Mikka raced against so many certified legends and still won 2 WCs shows you how special he was. Proper Fin spirit
Mika showed his brilliance on the track, beating Michael in his prime, twice. But he also has one of the best personalities of all the drivers ever. What a legend 🇫🇮
Once actually. 1998.
One of the drivers who dealt with so many "tough luck" situations in his career, but he *still* became a 2 time world champion. It was that "can't quit" attitude that made him a legend. If I grew up watching F1 in the 90's, I would have easily been a fan.
same
4:42 you know you’re great if Senna himself praises you.
Indeed! Both Senna and Michael saw the greatness in Mika. Especially after coming back from such adversity there is no doubt he has the heart of a champion.
I dunno about that, he once said "if you think im fast, wait until you see my nephew bruno"😂
@@tomcharlton586: Maybe he was adopted? Let's not forget that in 1978, Ayrton lost the Karting World Championship to American Stock car racer Lake Speed. Not exactly his finest hour.

@@SdoubleA Bruno could do even better with a better team
Mika should of had more titles imo
Especially with that determined attitude.
He's certainly one of the best
Was there any official reason for hakkinen retiring.. Did he have enough or maybe spend time with his family?
I felt like he has quite aways to go before retirement.
@Rollo Treadway aww... dammit I miss him and Schumacher fighting it out
@@jamie7168 He already had motivation problems in 2000 and 2001. His terrifying crash at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix certainly didn't help either, and his performances in the following races were really lackluster. As it turned out, Räikkönen proved a worthy successor, as went on to humiliate Coulthard in a way Häkkinen never managed to do. Still he intended to return in 2006 I believe, but by then he'd become too slow to be a serious option.
@@mrdraw2087 Well Coulthard was past his prime.
@@jamie7168 Mika has said in his book and on interviews that one of the reasons was that the start of the season 2001 there were Australia accident that reminded him about adelaide 1995 accident, then he got scared again on interlagos when his cars stalled on the grid and he feared someone could hit him. So he thought he wanted to retire, but Dennis changed his mind so he would only take sabbatical (which eventually became retirement). He then wanted to win 2 races that he had not won and had very high respect for (with Monaco and SPA) and those two were Silverstone and Indianapolis and he won them both. Mika was very close to comeback in 2005, he had actually already decided to do so (with Williams) and contract was already agreed but then when Mika was ready to sign, Williams had already decided to sign Button (which didn't happend in the end). Mika was so furious after that.
The Spa overtake gives me goosebumps everytime, remember watching it as a kid on TV.
I remember watching that live, I was never a schumacher fan so that move was especially sweet!
It's one of the all time greatest overtakes ever in motorsport. ever.
One of those drivers you simply can't dislike. Agressive on track and a gentleman off it.
Admit that: we Will never have someone like Hakkinen, legend
Mika is a true gent. all class. love him.
Maybe, but always, there is a hope
One of a kind. Unique. Tenacious. Relentless. Attacking!
I was a Schumacher fan, but I was secretly in love with Mika.

@11:05 That amazed face of Michael actually, like really really really, listening to Mika, what exactly happened, what he did and saw, that is some respect right there!
Mika is not talking about the overtake there, however. He’s disciplining Michael about Michael’s dangerous defensive move, which almost made them crash one lap before the overtake.

"The Michael" what a character Mika was!
I love how Senna enjoyed the first Podium from Hakkinen. He was such a great man!
Him and Senna also really understood each other in a friendly manner, very cool to see.
I remember watching that Spa overtake. I screamed so hard with my brother, and so did the whole block, town and my country. Mika is one of my legends with Tommi Mäkinen, Juha Kankkunen, Ari vatanen...and ofcourse Henri Toivonen. And Kimi😍
That spa overtake has the greatest overtake of all time. Takes eu rouge flat out, which you had to be mad to do at the time, and trust that zonta isnt going to move over as he sees Michael in his mirror. Legendary.
Imagine if he held that drift at 11:23 and kept going full speed. That would've been the best F1 clip in history!
IKR. He almost had that! I think the traction control prevented him from saving the spin.
Mika is one of my all time favorite drivers from any kinda of racing. That's my boy!
My favorite driver. Cool, calm, courteous and committed.
The rivalry with Michael is one of the most beautiful in history.
Respect was never hated.
Mika was one hell of a driver. People tend to forget that he had a realiable, fast car only for 2 full seasons. And he got 2 WDC:s from that.
Mika was my childhood hero! I still remember how excited I was, when he took his first win in Jerez.
Best Finnish F1 driver of all time. Cool head...and an awesome personality to boot. He took it to "The Michael" to an extent when he sat up and took attention of Mika. He's an F1 legend.
Imagine being Ricardo Zonta looking into your mirrors and seeing both world championship contenders fast approaching in a fierce battle.
I was SO damn lucky to have born early enough to witness Mika's championship years! :D 1998 was the first ever F1 season I watched from beginning to the end. Was great time to be Finn. As much as Im fan of Kimi, Mika will propably always be the best Finnish F1 driver. Ofc he made some mistakes too, in 1999 especially, but especially in qualifying he was arguably one of the best of his time.
And his freaking starts!! He perfected that science with McLaren
I wish they included the one when he was 3rd on the grid but made it to 1st corner ahead? with the rest of the pack 2 car lengths behind him
My favorite driver of all time, Mika is for me the GOAT, and that Mclaren Team Season 1993 is the most COMPLETE EVER for me, MIKA & SENNA!
I miss those days in F1, great races, great cars and amazing sound.
