After watching my last video, Ugreen responded to me and gave me some information and feedback on my last video with them. They decided to give me a 6bay NAS to look at and I decided to have some fun.

This is a revenge video about converting a NAS into a PC, because others are converting PCs into NAS.
at this point I just want these manufacture to make a real good case for putting normal motherboard and hard drives in (horizontal orientation, around 4-6 hard drives minimum, good structure integrity for the hard drive mount (for enterprise hard drive vibration endurance)). then they can add their mark up, profit on it without resorting to these expensive hardware and expensive software development. for software just put together a "community project" if you don't like existing ones. open source it so if people don't like something they can go fix and change it themselves.
cases in the old day with 4-6 3.5-inch bays in front and some 5.25-inch bays on top is already good enough. but finding them in good condition these days are hard. and putting long and big gpu in them is not possible.
Honestly, I think a big part of why they do this is data collection and higher margins
The cheapest case that meets those requirements nowadays is the Dark Rock Classico. I’m still using an Antec P100, and I need to plan ahead since my hard drive sleds are plastic.
That's just a fractal refine case, I've had it for a decade. I bought one of these because it's a lot smaller and lower power.
Hardware Haven JUST made a video on such a case!

On the GPUs, I'd hazard a guess that the nas doesn't have CSM/CSM enabled and can't initialise the older cards which are designed to work with legacy BIOSes? Whereas the 1650 will have a UEFI GOP, meaning it doesn't require that to function properly.
Did someone solve the plex not showing media Problem?
I have this same NAS and also ran into the issues with Plex and Docker. My solution was to create a new user account and just give it access to my shared media folder. Then ssh into the nas and get the puid and pgid of that new account and add them as environmental variables in the plex docker instance. This is the same process I used to get Plex working on my old Synology NAS.
Really interested in the 4 or 6 bay for a plex and mild game server nas. really glad running a separate OS is viable.
No SFP+ ? Why only RJ45, those run hot when convert to SFP+
I think the demo for this wouldn't even know what sfp is sadly
After uGreen's responses to you. I could definitely see myself picking up one of these NASes in the future if they add other native OS support. Thanks for continuing to battle with them.
They don't provide a download for their OS?
not that I could find easily online
@@aChairLeg were you able to find it hardly ?
Has anyone actually tried to image that little OS SSD before formatting it and putting another OS on it?
Yes I got mine. Oh My.
The amount of trouble is like. Should I stay with my Synology?
I love the product. Not fast, i have lost 2 times the media as has erased twice the volume.
🤦🏽♂️i just add the Cache and improved a lot the speed of transfer.
And yes I could bot find my NAS with my computer, but I went to the mobile, and yeap I got in.
And see is there.
I had a big remote session with them. But i am giving them a few weeks.
yes you should stay with your Synology tbh. Or build your own. There's too many red flags with how this NAS was advertised to people and I think if you want something turn key you're better off going with Synology or any other vendor. Or just getting your own.
these things are dogshit lmao.
@@SpectraFGCNo NAS is ever dogshit if it has an unlocked bootloader. At least you can install a superior OS that can transform the NAS into something better.
@@fujinshu A Nas that you buy off the shelf and have to install another operating system on it to have the advertised functionality is very much extremely dogshit.
These things aren't toys, they're appliances and you trust them with your data. They are to be on and remain on for as long as humanly possible and keep your data safe.
These things are sold to people to work as turn key solutions. (The main reason most people buy a NAS in the first place) if this isn't you, you should just build one.
I received my 8-bay 8800 this morning, but I am waiting for my 8 x Hitachi 14TB drives and 64GB to arrive.
you installed Win10?? on one of your own nvme?? so no one found 10gb port drivers yet??
you didnt erase ugos??? is ctrl-F2 the way to get into the BIOS??
Hopefully Ugreens waranty and support is better with their waranty in general.
I had two of their 240W desk USB power supplies. Both got fried within a week. only leaving the USB A ports working.
Ugreen told me to suck it in both cases and instead of replacing the units, offered me a 20% discount for a new one.
Ugreen is not out yet in amazon i dont know why all youtubers advertising
Found the small change that you talked about \o/
Nice video, btw
👍
i heard ugreen retail selling starts july 1st ... so ugos ready for prime time in 8 days??
Banger video mate, is a real shame that the Ugreen OS isn't as flawless as it could be, considering the hardware seems solid as heck
BTW, presumably an external Thunderbolt eGPU can be slapped together for something like ~$100 in parts (if you already have the GPU). So those with the 6 bay and 8 bay UGreen NAS models (DXP8600 and DXP8800 respectively) might be able to connect an external GPU for relatively cheap and without the need of taking power tools to the heat sink to make it fit. Naturally, no one can say if a GPU would even work via Thunderbolt yet but,……..never-mind,…
Anyone have the aforementioned UGreen Docker reference guide?
I'm not sure if that's something I'm allowed to share, or if it's public information, sorry.
Tangent question here... how do you change your username? 😅 I'm not seeing a button anywhere or anything on their FAQ
For the VPN I think that you can create a VPN (WireGuard, OpenVPN, Zerotier, etc) Container in network bridge mode.
I wish one of the 10 gig ports was sfp+
thanks for this especially since they've started to ship out rewards. for someone coming from synology, which OS would you say is best suited for this nas other than UgreenOS? only interested in things similar to ds video and plex. thanks.
I have been using Unraid this past year and it works really well and I know plenty of people who’ve used TrueNAS with great results. Both should run well on this hardware
Received my 4800 Plus 2 days ago. I am so completely braindead when it comes to stuff like command lines and such. So I can only really use the apps that ugreen has developed. For now I can pretty much only use it as a File-Backup Server for my phone and PC. Have high hopes for the june updates though. Hopefully the media center/player get's good updates. So that I can use it to watch shows on my tv. Tried watching some hdr content yesterday and it was dark as shit 😂
Weird that they don't have some way to download/reinstall their OS but I guess it's good that the software is getting better. I'd still throw truenas on it if I were to buy one though.
Lmfao on the parents/doctor comment
Very interesting. thanks for the update. Love all the unconventional testing that you do...
Hey loving your videos. Did you know ThinkPad t14 gen 5 has improved upgradability quite significantly. Upto 64 gb ram, new cpu, one internal battery changeable though. Please make a video on this if you can. Turning on notification. Cheers.
FYI you used the wrong text for the fps in the Minecraft test
Nice pixel 7. balling video as always
My ugreen is significantly more quiet. I have 5 16tb in it. I'm sure the drive density makes a difference.
😂just found my comment been quoted
iirc That happened before they change their mind and announce how they threat third party OS
Their hardware looks really great just their PR person interview cause some concern about their OS ,maybe check back a few months later see how thats going
At that time it should on shelf at UK market also
lmao okay well in the future, it'd be helpful if you actually told us more about the NAS part of this thing. I still don't know what the read/write speeds after putting however many drives in, for instance. 2.5 gig home networking isn't expensive so I'd figure you'd be highlighting that for us since that kind of thing is what your channel is about.
A full budget home networking video will come eventually, this is more of a ugreen NAS part 2
10gbit is a better option nowadays tbh, SFP+ switches are pretty cheap and you can always adapt SFP+ to 10000BASE-T
@@thegeekykitten468910gb is enthusiastic for home use still. Pricing can be similar to 2.5g but it's considerably more power hungry and you need cat6 or better.
Also the sfp to copper adptors have way less power available than a native 10gb ethernet switch and may nessatate cat6a or better or the copper run is just too long.
(Just run fibre if you need to re run and want 10gb+) Every step narrows down exzisting home installs feasibility for 10gb.
2.5g is fine on cat5e.
Edit, ex in my home my networking core is remote from my server core.
If there in the same place it's really easy to have a much faster core and backbone.
Ugreen’s lack of polish is unfortunate.
I will try a Nvidia Tesla T4 video card
Taking out media playback functionality is so fucking stupid.

oof the fact it requires all these dongles just to get it to connect makes this nas a no go
