Maybe it wouldn’t seem so cheap if the art design was different lol. It looks like an American attempted an anime style without actually watching anime. I’m glad you mentioned it, it actually looks a lot like what Natsume’s new “fake” Harvest Moon games would look like if they were actually decently made lmao. My Time In Portia is probably one of my favorite indie-farm-life sim game I’ve seen so far, and it’s surprisingly underrated! No talking animals, but it has pretty much everything else!
Why can't it just be a new art-style? I don't understand why people have to look down on indie-games without realizing that they can be whatever it can be. I think the art-style looks adorable! What makes this art-style unappealing?
@@angrybudgie96 I think they just mean that the animals' style just doesn't quite match the rest of the environment. Don't get me wrong! I agree that the game's adorable! But I can kinda see where they're coming from. Plus, it really DOES look like an animal crossing rip-off if you had never played anything besides that (and maybe stardew valley, another great game).
@Mallk238 Yes, it does look like an AC rip off. But it's just a lookalike with different mechanics and art style. I personally love the idea that you can make your own furniture. The game could use a lot of polishing up though. I don't agree that it looks like or acts like Stardew Valley though. That game is nothing like this game.
that was the first thing i noticed! the animals and even the character look so unsettling .. i even thought it might have a plot twist, where it turns into horror
Building furniture is part of the reason my ears have perked up a little at this game. The MySims style creator is really cool. I'm not as sold on the graphics but it's still pretty cute! I think as games and experiences like this grow and are iterated on, eventually Tom Nook is going to have some serious competition and have to step up his game a little bit in the island designing department. I love Animal Crossing, don't get me wrong- I've been playing Happy Home Paradise nonstop!- but it would be great to have the ridiculously cute fantasy furniture and love Pocket Camp got while having the full console experience on the Switch.
I wish Nintendo was still updating ACNH, I feel there's still a lot that could be added to make it even better. And I do have the DLC, I almost filled up Lottie's archipelago lmao and everyone has a similar roommate too.

This game makes me think of my sims for the wii with the custom furniture, the certain tasks you need to do, and having a really large map. I've been really wanting the two Sims games that were released for the wii to go on the switch because I loved them so much but this game gives you more than what was in those games
This game is literally My Sims, down to the building your own furniture and discovering/unlocking old parts of the town that you can fix up Lol. Its not bad, just haven't heard about My Sims in a loooooong time. Those games used to be the GOAT
I might check it out. Still though there’s something about the animals that just don’t sit right with me. Here’s hoping for some weird Lovecraft undertones.
The thing that animal crossing does better than any other game is the characters Tom nook, Isabelle, blathers and so many more it also has touched so many of us in ways that other games just can’t new horizons parted the clouds and came down from the heavens in times when we needed it most. For me personally it helps with me overcome my anxiety this game has changed my life and no other game has done this as well as the animal crossing series.❤❤
I would agree with the older games, but I’ve been disappointed with new horizons. I remember playing wild worlds as a kid and feeling such great attachment to my favorite villagers because it took time to build a friendship and the dialogues were dynamic and fun. Now all the npcs speak similarly and act the same, like you are instantly best friends. It makes me sad because the first few releases were focused more on talking to villagers, whereas now all the villagers feel disposable and like tools for our aesthetics. It feels like Nintendo has forgotten the heart of the game, and is just producing something that they know will be commercially successful.
@@simone348 I agree, in new horizons the dialogues are very repetitive and the villagers lack personality. Wild World was amazing, as you actually had to befriend the crumpy villagers. Now they're just old
@@simone348 Plus, I'll admit, that I kinda miss the lack of control you had over some of the stuff in the game. Being able to terraform your island sounds cool, but it becomes a bit overwhelming really fast. I liked the challenge of having to figure out how the HECK you should arrange your home based on the terrain. And I also miss how villagers just spawned in wherever, sure it ruined my look sometimes, but that was part of the fun! It kept things interesting. New horizons gives you complete control over everything on your island...but no rewards for enjoying the island that you have. The laid back nature of these games is lost when the game play is just "hurry hurry! you can do EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW! There's nothing else to do!!! So do the everything!"that is the customization.
Dinkum is another game in the "Animal Crossing but not" genre. The twist with that is that there's only human characters and it's very Australian themed. I only put a few hours into it so far. It seems like it'll open out later on but the early game feels like a bit of a slog imo. I'll definitely have to check out this game at some point. The creative side of AC is the main thing I enjoyed so having more freedom in that department seems like something I'd really be into.
Ooh, Hokko Life is out of early release? I remember playing that game back in July 2021. Time for me to juggle another video game (and just when I started to play on my three Animal Crossing New Horizons islands again).
I got Hokko life for my PC and was initially put off by the control system, it felt clunky but having heard what you have said I will get it on my Switch and give it more of a chance.
I love that we can place items anywhere, and can move houses instantly, build anything from scratch and customize nearly everything. it's a great game.
I loved this game untill it bugged and resetted several hours of work for me... Also you can cheat money by making a villager move out and then move them in and steal the items from the move in boxes, then kick them out and move them in and new boxes will respawn. ez cash.
LOVE Hokko Life! The batch crafting and mining are my favorites. The making my own furniture is still a work in progress. I find it really difficult, but I'm going to keep trying. If I can learn to fish in Stardew I can do it!! Love your videos!
I definitely want this game when im able to afford it but omigosh that feature of being able to customize your furniture and build it however u like reminds me of my favorite game of all time "my sims" its a childhood game i loved for the wii, when i saw this i almost cried because i miss my sims and nintendo never released, hokko life and Disney dreamlight valley have very similar features from that old game i loved so much, I can't wait to play it sometime Also do you get random villagers move in to the town just like animal crossing? Strange how Nintendo sell this in their online store for Switch. I mean, technically it does not violate Nintendo's immaterial rights for Animal Crossing, but I thought they'd be more vigilant towards copycats. Nevertheless, the animal models are kinda cursed in this.
It's so bad. I got my money back thankfully but it's so awful compared to Animal Crossing yet people praise this game like it's the best thing ever. It's buggy and unfinished. The creators also censored anything negative about the game by deleting messages and saying you could only say positive things about it. Not only that the personal political views of the creator are snuck into the game. Kinda disgusting if you ask me. Animal Crossing will always be the better game
okay but it really rubs me the wrong way how the title of the game isnt anywhere in the title of the video or description, and being called "better animal crossing" it just reminds me of when mattpatt did that to an indie game that reminded him of undertale.
I'm playing and like it so far. A few small things to be fixed: localizations may need tlc. I can only say this of the German version, but there's a few translation errors as well as text that's just missing. Also character names are the same as the English version, so I've been roll playing that the one pink elephant is my grandma. Camera rotation inside homes would be nice. And maybe a search bar for the Katalog? But other than that, pretty cool game.
yes the animals look creepy at first but you get used to it soon sjsjsjsj also theres some cute villagers that you meet later! and oleander is so mean istg im here for it
I wish acquiring a physical copy for the Switch was running smoothly for me...both Wal-Mart and Best Buy sent me X-Box One copies, so I returned the Best Buy copy at a UPS and surprised gifted a neighbor's kid who loves Minecraft with the Wal-Mart copy since he has an X-Box One console. Might as well have someone benefit from this colassal screw up.
It's extremely buggy and unfinished. Also lifeless compared to Animal Crossing. The developers also hate constructive criticism and deleted any negative messages about the game on the Discord. It was awful and thankfully I got my money back.
This game has so much potential but the designs of the characters and graphics need a lot of work. It is very fun though and definitely has a lot to offer if the devs decide to do updates.
Bulk crafting! And the mining, I like that it had that minecraft feel where you make lanterns to get into the mines. I'm not a fan of the animal designs, but I don't completely hate it either.
I love this game! In some ways I like it better than ACNH because the villagers don’t say mean things. It feels very cute and wholesome and relaxing. I was surprised how many people don’t like it

This game looks really fun to me. I’ve been getting bored of animal crossing and wanted something like it but more open world, and I honestly like how uncanny some of the animals look :p
I've spent a good 20 hours playing this since it came out on the Switch, and I gotta say, I feel like I ripped off the developer by getting it on sale for $15. Lol. I haven't even touched ACNH in a month of Sundays. This game made me pick my Switch back up. Crazy to think it was made by one guy. There are some bugs in the game, but that's to be expected for it being ported to the Switch/Xbox etc. And they just added Halloween items, which is super cute. All in all, it's a great game. Def different than ACNH. It really makes me hope that the next AC game will have mining and more advanced farming aspects, like adding a sprinkler system to water crops.
I’m gonna say that in a game like this. On the player customization page at the start of the game, it’s creepy enough as-is and makes me not want to progress any further. And the villagers look like if one of the developers spent too much time playing with Calico Critters and decided; “Hey why not we use these as villagers in the sim game we’re making?” And also you have limited storage almost the same as the GC Animal Crossing. Another RUclipsr listed out a lot of things to do in this game like mining, going to cities for custom made items however the design of this game burnt me out immediately before I got into those. Long story short, if you just got got burnt out of Animal Crossing, this would burn you out even faster.
Just started this game. I was able to access the upper level through an unexpected glitch & spent about 5 minutes trying to get back down before the game let me back to the first level. The villager Moss also was blinking on & off the screen which was kind of creepy lol... I hope the bugs get fixed because that all happened in just the first hour of game play but besides that seems like a good game.... going to keep playing & hope the bugs work themselves out.
I needes a game to relax and not overthink... I bought this 2 days ago and I am so proud of myself, the music, the athmosphere, the sounds, the colors, I just love this game
I love your review, it was very helpful, thank you! I do wish the main character could just walk normally as well as run though, nothing but running is exhausting to watch. I enjoy taking my character on walks to just enjoy the scenery since these kinds of games usually have a lot to see too. Could the creator possibly add a walking animation for those times when you want to go slower? I would love that so much! Thanks again! :)
'cheap Animal Crossing' Can see it, especially with 'that' running animation, but then how cheap are Nintendo when they can't even include features like minigames from prior ACs, let alone a developed customisation system? I've been saying for ages, their games are just not up to modern game design standards and their, massive, resources just don't seem to go back into development. Am reminded a little of Fantasy Life as well.
The mechanics are great, the textures are terrible, but the community and overall idea behind the game is amazing, I just hope the graphics get fixed at some point
Does anyone that plays Hokko life now were to get the fabric colour lime from please? 😊 I like playing this game but at the min I still like animals crossing too. 🥰
@@lamb9642 there is nothing wrong with competition. I loved new horizons and the DLC and played them both a lot but there is a lot more Nintendo could’ve given us
no it is not better, i played it when it was in beta and again when it came out, its creepy and boring and so obviously a rip off, its just so dang eerie and the characters creep me out. even the text bubble and sounds and stuff are trying to mimic exactly animal crossings styles.
At least the animals on this island have personality and don't just say the same thing as one another. All jocks say what they say. All sisterly say what they say. But the animals in this have their own feelings and thoughts. Plus some are mean to you. That's what I love for this game
i love this game. the villagers design doesnt bother me. i dont think they have the most cute design and the following mechanic is kinda weird loll but i just dont use that. it was slow to start the game but then i started having sooo much fun
On my first map I only had like 5 trees, so not enough wood for several missions. Since I still didn't have the shovel for planting trees, I had to completely restart the game to get a new map with more trees... I have to admit that I don' t really have the motivation to continue. I mean I did get into the mine now, but somehow I don't really like the game, I'm also not sure if I like the art style...
Seems overwhelming to consider a whole new game rn, but definitely might try in the future along with all the other life/farm sims I’ve heard of. For now it’s stardew and ac.
I do like a Hokko life however, it doesn’t have the magic of Animal Crossing. And you cannot interact with any objects, other than sitting or sleeping in beds.
Honestly I think this game is good if you’re tired of the repetitiveness from animal crossing. After going so far all you see is the same things, which can get exhausting. Hokko Life might be that breath of fresh air some people are seeking without losing Animal Crossings charm
@@lamb9642 Alright then I guess games based off of Harvest Moon are also “invalid”. Stardew Valley a game that has been nominated many awards in the 1 year of its release was based off of Harvest Moon and many people can argue that it is better then Harvest Moon. Games that are “copied” are not carbon copies and are changed for the creators perspective as they see better. Also we know Nintendo, they’re a bunch of cash grabs that make you spend more money for dlcs. So you can see it as a cheaper alternative. Think before you comment, some people do not have the money to buy a switch or a 60 dollar game. And if they do I’m sure they would rather find a cheaper alternative and spend 20 dollars on a basically the same game as Animal Crossing
Watch the trailer for hokko life from 2 years ago, it wasnt creepy. I bought this game on steam, refuse to buy it on the switch until they go back to the pre release style. Even the houses and the grass where better.
To make matters worse, it was the developer who did all the previous designs, the publisher gave the dev a new "designer" and they completely ruined it. How is a designer worse at designing than a programmer??
Play dinkum, its probably way more worth your time, and also its literally just Australian animal crossing, I can say you'll at least like it equally if not more than this.
Art style a little questionable but otherwise looks fun. Do the villagers not have idle movement animations? The way they just stand still gives me the creeps for some reason.
This game is better, I believe. The creative aspect is amazing. And the main reason I play. The creative aspect in animal crossing is too restricted! And I am talking about the furniture we make from scratch.
I like it but idk if its just me but i guess im just not used to the ui mayhaps ? i struggle rotating and moving pieces on my switch and its kinda funky, so i'll probably watch a few more tutorials
im srry but i can stand the art style, feels like it made for a kid from like 2006 but not as game but as PBS kids tv show, i get it someone or some people worked hard on it but from the animal models to the animations dont like the player model art style either, but that me most likely wont play it, shit im at a point where im looking to get a old PS2 and getting old Demo game disc, (mainly for the main menu themes) but so i can also go back and play the game i played as a kid (but a never had a save card and B my parents couldn't afford to buy one for me so i either left my old ps2 (which kinda killed it didnt help that back when everyone used to wack the electronics to get them to work when they were breaking)
The only difference is that it’s a mix of acnh and acnl so it’s like not a true AC game it’s a knockoff and I don’t care if you can do things before 2.0 they literally copied the aspect of animal crossing
Maybe it wouldn’t seem so cheap if the art design was different lol. It looks like an American attempted an anime style without actually watching anime.

Another RUclipsr listed out a lot of things to do in this game like mining, going to cities for custom made items however the design of this game burnt me out immediately before I got into those.
Long story short, if you just got got burnt out of Animal Crossing, this would burn you out even faster.
It’s very similar to MySims on the Wii. Especially with the secret areas!
'cheap Animal Crossing'
Can see it, especially with 'that' running animation, but then how cheap are Nintendo when they can't even include features like minigames from prior ACs, let alone a developed customisation system? I've been saying for ages, their games are just not up to modern game design standards and their, massive, resources just don't seem to go back into development.
Am reminded a little of Fantasy Life as well.
The mechanics are great, the textures are terrible, but the community and overall idea behind the game is amazing, I just hope the graphics get fixed at some point
Holly Molly. This is a mix between Animal Crossing and MySims and I already love it.
Seems like a cool game might have to try it out!
Does anyone that plays Hokko life now were to get the fabric colour lime from please? 😊 I like playing this game but at the min I still like animals crossing too. 🥰
Perfect example of art direction missing the target. Still small indie dev doing their best love it!
Low-key where I find this
spiderman run lmao
Hokko Life is a childe of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing
Animal crossing with progression and exploration … sign me up
You mean cheap copy
LOL, so far Oleander is the meanest 😂😂 but he is just being grumpy
i love this game. the villagers design doesnt bother me. i dont think they have the most cute design and the following mechanic is kinda weird loll but i just dont use that. it was slow to start the game but then i started having sooo much fun
Uhh it would be so nice to hear your take on this game 😊 thx for the vid
Ooh this looks cute... and creepy.. but i want it
i hate that i also now cannot unsee it
Hokko life 100% wants to be animal crossing
Wow. Seems like animal crossing could sue 😬 lol it's so similar
It's like My sims and animal crossing had a baby!
I'm too comfy in bed right now
I agree with the assessment from others that the animals look like people in suits. I stopped playing after I realized that. 😅
Seems overwhelming to consider a whole new game rn, but definitely might try in the future along with all the other life/farm sims I’ve heard of. For now it’s stardew and ac.
I tired playing for a few hours but the aesthetic is just not for me. I’ve since got hooked on Ooblets ! But maybe I’ll give it another try
Then do other original games than AC. But no, you would rather support copying
All of that for the rating you gave at the end 🤭
I was confused on that as well!
I legit thought of you when I saw this game! Love that you picked it up!
hokko life's blk hair styles >>>> AC
Play dinkum, its probably way more worth your time, and also its literally just Australian animal crossing, I can say you'll at least like it equally if not more than this.
Awesome video. Thanks for the heads-up. I just purchased it online and can't wait until I get home for it to download.
I’m good with animal crossing no Walmart versions
Not really, Disney Dreamlight Valley is in my opinion
I loved Hokko Life, but I'm apparently not great at the building aspect and that ruined the game for me. I may try it again though.
I think I'll stick to Dinkum lol the animal villagers look spoopy
This reminds me a lot of My Sims for the Wii
Art style a little questionable but otherwise looks fun. Do the villagers not have idle movement animations? The way they just stand still gives me the creeps for some reason.
18th! Omg I never knew about this! Sound so fun and fresh, am going to get it right away
I really like this game It’s so much fun
Wow! Building ur own furniture 10/10 idea ngl
I love this game actually
Hi Kora- I just wanted to say i love you're videos 🥳
It depends on which AC game you're comparing it to.
To all my Stardew fans this feels like a cross between acnh and Stardew
but acnh and stardew has charm, good music and its gorgeous looking this game is just weird and offputting..
The only difference is that it’s a mix of acnh and acnl so it’s like not a true AC game it’s a knockoff and I don’t care if you can do things before 2.0 they literally copied the aspect of animal crossing
