This song made me a massive fan of Numan at the age of 14 in 1979, 60 next year and still a massive fan

He and his music was so different and new, even ahead of the times in a way.🎶👍

Huge fan of Gary. I even think this song (and others) were the inspiration for a lot of death metal bands.

For someone who had never even played a synth or had piano lessons to produce a track of such stunning timeless quality is pure genius and I don't use that term lightly! Not sure why the press turned on Gary but there you go he's having the last laugh.

Agreed, he was/is an amazing artist and he definitely had the last laugh on the media. I'll have to cover more of his music in the future, but will probably avoid cars as everyone seems to react to that one. Thanks for watching

Gary Numan is a very old guy from space sometime far away in the future. In the distant past he found a mini moog in a studio which transformed his follicles into laser beams as it shook the room. He was so impressed he bought the company. He then got a wife from the front row of one of his gigs as he couldn't be bothered dating conventionally. Garys wife is a real Gem of a human that he didnt nearly marry, he actually did. They now have 28 kids together. Garys wife had to write Trent a secret note asking if Trent was coming out to play. Trent did come out to play once teens of years ago but it was enough for Gary to think he was Trents best friend and therefore mention Trent at every opportunity within the next phase of Gary becoming a fluffer for Trent. Garys career took off at lightning speed half a hundred years ago. Successful number one albums in a row meant that Gary could get a job with British Telekom dressed as Captain Scarlet. He then got a plane and set about getting his crop duster licence. Flying at high speed with the planes canopy removed was very exhilarating for Gary but also very costly as the force of the wind blew his hair clean off his head. He then lost his way creatively and his career went into decline somewhat as he somehow though he was Prince formerly known as Cymbal. This resulted in a lot of crap music until his wife, then still single, decided Gary needed his arse kicked into shape somewhat. She then hypnotised Gary into having a little bit more self belief which earned her the right to new boobs and teeth and there was even some money left over to get bunions removed meaning Gem could wear sandals for the first time in her life....

Firstly, thank you for watching and for your comments. I'm not sure how to take your comments, but they are clever and definitely made me smile. It's the kind of 'left field' take on things that often appeals to me. In particular, the part about working for BT in a Captain Scarlet outfit - very smart

And a brick from an iconic venue for Numan, that's also cool. For me, Numan songs just remind me of going to clubs

I don't like the vast majority of Numan's so called industrial music. It lacks depth and more often than not there's no discernible melody just layers and layers of noise. Gary's wig however has endured decades of abuse but it's never once detached itself from Gary's head. That is future proofing at its very best and it is testament to Gary's strength and resolve as he tenaciously tries to remain relevant.

I was only 10 when I saw Are Friends Electric on Top of the Pops, but even then I was instantly hooked and realised this was the future. The 7" single ended up becoming the first record I bought with my pocket money. As much as I love Gary's music though, I do think Ultravox's album 'Systems of Romance' from the previous year was probably the real originator of this new sound. Gary has often cited John Foxx as a big influence. He just happened to break through first with the wider public. Great pilot too. I used to help out on a Russian Yak 11 that was based at Earls Colne in the 1990s. Gary often popped over to fly the aircraft at weekends. We hosted a re-union of WW2 USAAF veterans in 1992, and Gary volunteered to fly a display for them in the Yak. Blistering demonstration. Still got it on VHS somewhere.

Wow, you definitely have some stories to tell - impresses the hell out of me 👍they must be some great memories.
I agree with you about John Foxx musically and I did a review on Hiroshima Mon Amour a little while ago. I think what Gary brought was the 'look' of the future and that's why he stood out and captured media attention.
I know very little about planes, but I know he was a good pilot and how he started in the air training core.

@@BritishDadReacts-ui4jx Thanks! I'll make certain to watch the John Foxx video. You're spot on about the look. I saw an interview with Gary where in his opinion, early Ultravox would have done better if they had changed their look. Yes! Got a few stories to tell so it's nice to have the chance to share them once in a while. Gary got so much undeserved stick from the press. It was nasty. Didn't matter if it was his music, or his flying, they went after him (although those same critics now cite him as a huge influence on music. Talk about hypocrisy!) From my observations through my connections with aviation, Gary was a solid, professional and talented pilot. He ended up being a Display Pilot Evaluator for the Civil Aviation Authority, meaning he had to check out and authorise other pilots for display flying. He was also an Aerobatic Display Instructor. No mean feat in the aviation world. If you want to check out his display flying in the 1990s, give the documentary 'The Radial Pair' a look. It's on RUclips.

@@fightersweep it is shameful what the music press did to him, but class always shines through. And they are hypocrites, definitely.
I didn't know that much about his flying career, seems like he really took it seriously. I'll definitely check out that documentary, thanks for giving me the name of it.
It's good to see that he is now respected for what he brought to millions.

@@fightersweep I think I replied to this and then must have hit something and it was deleted. Shameful what the press did to Gary, but in the end his class showed through. I didn't know that much about his aviation work - he was clearly very serious about it, as well as being very good.
I'll check out that documentary - thanks for the recommendation.
It's good to see that he got the recognition he always deserved

@@BritishDadReacts-ui4jx The documentary is very good and highlights Gary at the height of his display career. Have a fond memory of Norman Lees, his partner in the Radial Pair. Sleeping over at the airfield one weekend, I had just woken up and stepped outside with a cup of coffee into a lovely morning. Next thing I hear is the sound of an approaching piston engine at full pelt and promptly got buzzed at very low level by a P-51 Mustang. 8:30 on Sunday morning! It was awesome. We sort of knew who the pilot was, but Norman neither conformed or denied it...with a wry smile. Norman Lees was unfortunately killed in 2000 when a two seat Spitfire he was in crashed on Landing. It was not determined if he or the guy who had just bought the aircraft was in control at the time. Norman's loss was I think, instrumental in Gary quitting flying.
