Nothing ever presented for appraisal at the “Antiques Roadshow” is as valuable or as precious as the great sense of enjoyment the program and the appraisers gave my bedfast father as he suffered from Parkinson’s Disease. He loved the show and looked forward to watching it. Thank you to all the people responsible.
💛💛💛💛💛💛🕊
It feels as if the viewer is peering into an intimate courtyard catching a glimpse of a private scene. So beautifully rendered in every way.
duh
What caught me out in surprise is the sheen on the man's robe, you get a sense of its material as well as the light shining on it. Impressive...
I'm instantly in love with this painting!
@@tyranosurasmax ...I love comments where a formulation of thought is expressed in an intelligent thoughtful manner. However, this isn't one of them.
“Forget those $5,000 people” 😆. She’s delightful! Congratulations!!
Delightful AND classy.
She used the word "forget" because she was in public. Whatever happened to those old school angels ??
@@kurtbarlow9402 pretty sure she woulda used the word "forget" in private, too. Classy dames like her aren't just putting on a public face.
It's Phoebe from Friends as an older women! 😂
Oh you are spot on, looks and mannerisms.👍😄
absolutely!
It doesn't look like her at all.
So funny. First thing I thought before checking the comments 😄
Her "Oh, my goodness" at the end was very that.
It's a striking painting.
It really is.
That is a beautiful painting.
Man, the level of detail on this painting is excellent
The painting is beautiful, but the owner’s reaction is priceless!
The artist was truly gifted.
A gorgeous painting with phenomenal detail. Even the webbing of the man's left hand is exquisite.
I know nothing about art. That said, the painting is as beautiful as her reaction.
As an Arab, I have always loved Orientalist paintings. My favorite artist during this period was Gerome. I am sure this piece would get much more than 30,000 in the near future
What a genuine lady...
Extremely well done painting
Good bless that beautiful lady.
Lovely painting and love the title too..’the hour of prayer’
The texture of the silk on the Gown of the man praying is outstanding, to me this paintings has to be worth a hundred grand easy.
I agree. The best way to describe a painting with a composition this delicate is that it's alive. With the right auction house and buyers I believe it would inspire a bidding war.
I noticed the silk as well; especially well done.
@@joshspeed7794 Unfortunately bidding wars don't occur because an item is beautiful, they happen because A) artist's name is increasing in recognition, B) the work is assumed by bidders to increase in value in the near future, and/or C) the competing bidders have collections for which they consider the work to "complete." Best bargains at every art auction are the beautifully drawn, painted, and conceived but unsigned and unattributed works.
Cant be silk tho. Its not permissable for muslim men to wear silk. Only women are allowed to 🤓
That composition is so beautiful that I think the right collector would pay closer to 100k. The artist may not be as well known for that genre, but the painting has life and I think would inspire a bidding war.
Absolutely. It is one of those 'must haves'.
I can imagine a very wealthy Arab man paying millions for this if you ask me, the depiction of the man being at peace during prayer is exquisite.
It’s crazy that people collect these with no intention to resell
It's a great painting. I don't think you need to be an expert to see that it is exceptionally well painted. Love her reaction.
Man I can hear these art people talk all day its so relaxing lol
stunning painting.
That is a really freaking good painting.
This woman is delightful. Young or old she is a shining bright flower in the sun. What a delightful person.
I love seeing people genuinely awestruck with pure happiness :)
Genuine lump-in-the-throat response from her on hearing value. Just adorable. Often I think people go in with an idea towards potential high value or why else would they bring it in? So easy to research online the average prices for an artist's work nowadays.
Wow... The painting is so good...
oh that painting is stunning! This is completely not my style, I usually prefer abstract/absurdist, but this painting is really special. The expression on the man's face evokes the liberating faith in a benevolent god, like the quiet joy and inner peace of religion. And I'm saying that as an atheist. This picture truly speaks a thousand words.
@ta vh From atheist to atheist: I agree completely! A stunning depiction of silent devotion, so full of expression, simply amazing!
Pretty much my exact thoughts too!
This painting is definitely way more than that.. It's absolutely beautiful!!!
I love this show
Stunning painting
Yes, beautiful painting. The light on the subject is astonishing, and you can see his beliefs in praying.
Beautiful painting. Wonderful lady. That price quote took her breath away for a minute.
LOVE THESE SHOWS!! THANK YOU!!!
I love the painting, the frame, and this woman’s reaction.
Stunning painting...a what a delightful woman. She deserves it
Good eye, me!
Upon first glance, I was reminded of the Clark Art Institute's Fumée d'Ambre Gris (Smoke of Ambergris), by John Singer Sargent; A treasure that has been locked away for nearly 30 years in their archives.
ivorytower99 That is one I see often at the Clark and it came right to mind for me too. It's a real favorite of many of the Clark's visitors and has a place of honor there. Come visit it!
I know something about this picture this place in qarouin Tunisia North Africa and I know good this place
wow! great you could recognize it!
What madhab they teach in Qarouin?
@@farzana6676 north africa madhab al-maliki
@@wasamr4703 Oh okay. That is great.
I study Deoband. Madhab Abi Hanifa.
Looks like Cordobas mosque to me
The cloth of the man’s gown is remarkably done. Love it!
A wonderful piece...She is adorable....
Love it!
I love this painting. Exquisite.
She is beyond gorgeous!
A rather adorable reaction from this sweet little old lady. She is a cutie.
Someone tried taking this sweet lady...love the imagery...
Beautiful reaction
Hello, I recall this when it first AIRED on PBS. Immediately I knew it was that artist. . . due to my upbringing in Stockton, CA where they had a few works before they sold them to N.Y.C. Museum. I knew his work from the heart.
One of these days, this show is going to be just a little too much for a pensioner, and they'll tip right over.
Exquisite. The detail, down to the wrinkle in the rug, is amazing.
Gorgeous painting.
Beautiful painting....
GORGEOUS!
I love that painting...
She is so beautiful, chic style and adorable personality
1:17 It really did capture that moment!
That is beautiful.
Such detail on that painting
The lightshaft seen through the grill work is very well done, isn't it?
Lovely painting.
The painting - $30-50,000 The reaction - Priceless!!!!
i can see this thing hitting 80k to 100k
Charles Wilda was an Austrian artist that was a master of Orientalist painting. The quality of his work can be seen in the details of depth, light , technique and color. His mastery of spatial relation make his paintings come to life as though you are there looking at the scene firsthand . Whomever offered the woman owner a measly $5000 appraisal was probably trying to steal it from her.
I am thankful that, for the first time, I saw prayer depicted with face up!, not down! My Father is in Heaven, why would I look down when speaking to Him?
🤣🤣 she said forget about those 5 thousand dollar people.
Oh my gosh she is Phoebe isn’t she? Phoebe’s mum perhaps? Gorgeous painting. I love that he is looking skyward with his prayers and that he has his shoes off as well. So respectful so humble. In awe of God.
I love her❤️😂 “Forget those $5k people!!!”
I have seen this painting somewhere. Did it end up in. Museum?
Lovely lady 🌾
This looks like a prayer hall in a mosque. The book in front of him is Holy Quran(because it’s still read in this style). And at the back a religious teacher is most certainly taking a viva from what the student learnt that day. The person standing is either getting up and ready for prayer or about to start reading Quran, can’t tell. But he’s not yet praying to be accurate. Definitely a great peaceful moment in time.
Before the Pandemic, in 2020 the painting easily would sell for 50 if not 60 or $70K
My guess is that it would make a lot more than that in the Arab world today if it ever came up for auction.
I bet in a Middle East market auction in a place like Dubai you would get a lot more.
I would never sell it, its gorgeous.
I have seen this painting a lot of time on internet
she looks like an older Phoebe Buffay
Beautiful painting, but the condition seem rather poor.
Sold! Put it on eBay, I’ll take the thirty grand.
is not kairouan it is rather the zitouna mosque there is a copy of the same painting
Put another zero on that estimate, and you'll be close.
I sense a bidding war in the right auction setting. Foreign buyers would drive it north of 90k and probably closer to 100k.
I've seem some junk being called art, but this painting isn't that. It's a serious work of art.
I like the lady more than the painting.
That man's face looks like an old photograph.
She reminds me of aunt May
ah geez, let us see, oh why does my brain do this, when was $30,000 9in 2018 worth $5000, where is the inflation calculator... so $5,000 in 1972 dollars would be worth $30,000 in 2018 dollars
She doesn't know the name of the artist when it's writ large under the title ON the base of frame with large capital letters as was the tradition in the 19th Century.! Should we believe that?
Wow he low balled this painting way low, he forgot to add a zero. Half a million dollar piece.
$ 5000 yeah right , they were probably hoping you sell it to them then turn around and sell it for 10x what they paid for , glad the Lady got a second estimate...a more honest one .
I just love some of the comments, the one said- bless that lovely lady. She probably think because he is wearing a robe he is a female, I dont want to hurt others feelings but it is very funny. The painting is exquisite, if you are a christian - we are not allowed to believe in another Almighty, not that we hate others, we think that they believe in a entity thats not the Almighty- he was a human, I think he was blessed by a higher spirit, I am sure he was very kind thats why he is honoured in their faith, I respect that but still think its not the Almighty, be blessed.
They're talking about the owner, not the subject of the painting! 😂😂
Sell, baby, sell!
Enjoy that money!
Lol
Me: $5000 dollar..
Appraisal guy: 30 to 50000 dollars
*me* : 30 to 50000 dollars.. Told u
Did she just say "F... those $5000 people"?
Yes, in her own polite, respectful way.
basically still 5k after the auction fees lol.
Usually the buyer pays the fees on top of the bid price and the seller would get the full bid amount.
Sold by a dealer or gallery, however, and the seller would most likely split the sale price 50/50.
I find it annoying they call these paintings oriental (which sounds Chinese to me for some reason). Why not call it an example of the Muslims in North Africa in prayer.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it always seems that there is this undercurrent of not normalizing Islam.
BF-
Because the Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc. are all in East Asia and that portion of the world is considered "the orient", which translates to "the east". It is considered bad form to describe humans as Oriental because the term is actually meant for geographical descriptions.
The frame looks better than the painting lol
Using headphones, USA accent ALERT---need to turn the volume down.
Imagine that PBS promoting Islam! There is absolutely nothing spiritual about Islam!
Oh stop.
A rag head at prayer.
those 5000$ people wanted to take advantage of an old woman
Epithome of colonialism.
