I saw this first run with my parents as a teenager in Toledo, Ohio. We enjoyed belly laughs in the movie house and the rest of the evening. I recently bought a ukulele and learned this sentimental song first.
If I could find someone my age who loves this movie as much as I do, I would fall head over heels in a second. This is one of my favorite movies of all time- lots of classic lines, subtly romantic, great acting. They do need to put it on DVD, my VHS is wearing out. -Leila
In 1967 I was 19 and an usher at the Airport Theater in Panorama City, California. This movie was playing, and I couldn't see it enough times. The truth, I was almost fired for ignoring the people in the theater so that I could lean against a wall and watch the movie; manager and owner were in the audience at the time!
MMM. The most romantic scene in any movie, in my opinion. I will one day meet a girl my age, 23, who will have seen this movie and understands good old fahsioned, classy romance. My favorite movie. Thanks for posting it.
I love Robards and I love this flick. No one I know, knows anything about it. It seems to be so under-rated, but I think it's a masterpiece. I suppose if you could not connect to the central Robards character, then you wouldn't like the movie. Robards was a man born to play dysfunctional characters, Tennessee Williams characters, screw-you-get-away-from-me characters. Oh, by the way.....
This movie was my first intimation that people really are different. Half a century ago I saw this with a buddy of mine. It was on a double bill with "The Russians Are Coming!". He laughed his head off at "Russians". I smiled and was mildly amused. When "1,000 Clowns" came on I don't think he cracked a smile; didn't get any of it. I couldn't stop laughing; I may have torn a muscle. It was a revelation.
I saw this for the first time last week when I was at work...and I couldnt stop watching it :) The boy Barry Gordon grew up in Massachusetts and he sang the song "I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas" in the 50's...pretty cool :)
I never forgot this song since the first and only time I saw this movie for a quarter at the Bardstown Movie Theater in Louisville when the movie first came out. Excellent movie and very talented acting.
i saw this movie the first time on tv in the 70's i believe...i never forgot what a great work of art it was. i did not see it again until a few months ago when it was shown on channel 13... brought back many memories...the movie is very sad and moving for me and always brings tears to my eyes...its a dark comedy. the comedy of life i guess with all its pain and sorrow. i love the scene at the peers..."it gives you a sense of beginning" what a great quote.
one of the best movie ever...Robarts was one of the classic greats. he raised the bar for everyone... a true artist...on the same level as Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart
One of my all time favorite films. Waiting for it to be on dvd; it's on my netflix list too. The line about the 43 year old midget is used often in our family, though the (grown) kids have never seen the movie.
Great movie! Have been recommending this to friends for 40+ years (it was on TCM last night, but at 2am). More clips please, including those with Chuckles, the Chipmunk.
Saw this for the first time last week... Really loved it---stayed fixated for 2 hours... I also learned YES SIR THAT'S MY BABY and it will soon be previewed on RUclips under (pocketcharts12)... THIS IS TRULY A GREAT ROMANTIC and WONDEFUL movie--- Rick
It was filmed on the Upper West Side, 70s to 90s between Columbus and Amsterdam. I think the vacant lots were from row houses that were razed to make way for housing blocks during the 1960's. Hope this helps!
I concur; best movie ever. :] Lucky me, I've been exposed to it my whole life. Haha but my boyfriend watched it with me the other day, and he couldn't stay focused. Loser.
One of the sweetest movies ever made.

Greatest movie never seen! Took me 28years to find this movie...what a gem...
It does me good to know that so many people love this little gem of a movie.
This is not a 'little gem'. It is life itself.

You’re not alone. I love it. There are two persons in this world, people who like delicatessen and people who don’t

By far the best movie ever made. Too bad it was 28 years before I first did.
What an amazing film! I love it and own a copy but its easier to turn others on to its greatness this way. Hey thanks wildcat626!

Just saw Barry Gordon on leave it to Beaver this morning.
Oh, yes, one more thing: For those who want the DVD, it is out there. But don't search for "1,000 Clowns" -- search for "A Thousand Clowns".
Great film.....

Chelsea Sandoval I just got to watch A Thousand Clowns for the first time and I simply loved it.
“Everyone out for volleyball!”
They don't come any better than this.
Nick is played by Barry Gordon who had a Christmas Hit with " nuttin' For Christmas."
